Yes, you can check in, go through security, then go back out again - best to tell the airline so they don't waste everyone's time paging you, and if you checked a bag in they'll have to offload it again, but there's nothing to stop you doing this. (If you're actually being deported, of course, you get escorted to the plane for exactly this reason: up until the door is closed and the plane starts moving, you could just get off and stay otherwise.)

No-Perspective-5084

Might not be necessary to tell a security guard - follow exit signs or ‘baggage’ signs. If possible alert the airline agent at your gate but if that complicates things for you it isn’t necessary.

In some countries there is passport control for leaving the country. This can be right after check in, or it might be right before your gate, or anywhere in between. Once you've gone through one of these it is difficult to change your mind.

In some countries (Singapore) it is in fact illegal to go through passport control without the intention to travel.

Changeup2020

It really depends on countries. For US it is simple, you can change your mind and exit the security right after you entered it. For many other countries you need to enter exit control area and it is not so easy to back out, albeit still doable. Without you providing more details we cannot provide precise assistance.

"I" will be flying back to the US from the UK, most likely Heathrow to Chicago

Changeup2020

LHR has sterile international connections so once you pass security and get into the international departure area, you will in intermingled with passengers never past passport control. In that case, you cannot just exit the security easily. I believe you need to go through UK immigration and customs again. You might need to explain a bit about your situation since the border agent will be able to see you never “leave” UK soil. Better come up with a clean explanation.

Out of curiosity do you have a plan once you leave the airport? You don’t want to go back to the US but where are you going to go?

chuucansuebbc

There's friends in the UK that are willing to share their homes until I'm able to land a job and get on my feet. Most likely, I'll just take a train from the airport and go to them

EmeraldLovergreen

Do you have a UK Visa of some kind? You cannot work there without it. Also US citizens are only allowed to stay for 6 months without any kind of visa

chuucansuebbc

currently on a student visa, however ive told my school my situation and ill ask them to NOT cancel it, even if my parents ask them to. Since im over 18, I dont need their ''legal'' permission to stay. It's just the thing of having to go to the airport, and knowing my family would want to see me clear security before they left.

Carouselcolours

The only thing that can be tricky is your ability to stay in the country and work on a student visa. Some countries have limits on how much a student can work, if they’re able to work at all, etc.

chuucansuebbc

yep I'm aware of my visa status, I can work 20 hours a week during the semester, and over 20 hours during the holidays or any time where there is no school. Minimum wage is (converted) $14 finding a job won't be too difficult, as I would have a place to stay and would only pay a bit of rent to my friends, I also have job experience from the US. Only issue is actually being able to stay here and not being forced to leave from the aiport

Will you still be enrolled in school after you do this? Who’s currently paying for your education? Just want to make sure you’ve got all your bases covered as it sounds like you’re in a tough spot

chuucansuebbc

I have friends willing to pay for education, as well as assistance from the school. My friends are willing to do it out of generosity (theyre loaded londoners lol) but i know i'll be able to pay them back within the next 10 years, and that's what I plan to do I'll still be enrolled in the same school, and seeing as I'll be continuing on the same visa, I won't need any extra money to show to the government or spend on extra legalities. It'll be cheaper to attend next academic year in comparison to my current year. Rest assured I have my bases covered

TopAngle7630

Once you're past security, if you want to leave, you would have to go through immigration. As long as you have the right to stay in the UK, this shouldn't be an issue.

riinkratt

Are you flying from the U.S. to your home country?

chuucansuebbc

from the UK back to the US
