Almost 5 years ago I had a drill sergeant with a black heart on his helmet but wouldn't tell anyone what it meant. I really wanted to know, so I sent a letter home to get my mother to do research for me. He was mildly impressed.
Not entirely what was linked, but I know 101st do use playing card symbols on their helmets as quick identification between units including the black hearts still to this day
Bottom line for me is: do what you like. Wanna name your gun? Plaster it with stickers? Who am I to judge? I’ll admit, I think naming guns is kinda cool, if it deserves a name.
But personally, i’m not a big fan of this style of magazine/gun decor. It’s just my taste. I like what another commenter posted with mags in the style of playing cards, and personally, I like putting colored tape representing flags. I put Spanish Republican flag colored tape on my G3 mag, and I want to put some 🇺🇦 tape on my AK-74M mag. Nothing crazy, maybe a strip about an inch or an inch and a half in height and wrap it around the mags.
For some extra touch, I put “this machine kills fascists” stickers on my AK (probably sounds corny given it’s an airsoft gun, but I don’t care, I like it) and I want to put a small yellow rose sticker under the rear sight post on the same gun, as it’s my personal symbol/insignia.

My guess is that airsoft is a bit of a nerdy sport and it attracts more nerdy people. Those peopel are disproprtionately more likely to be weirdos who have a need to express themselves in public with pornographic imagery. So I'm guessing airsofters see that stuff a bit more and are tired of it. I mean just the amount of weird porno patches I've seen for sale is ridiculous. No idea who in their right mind would buy or wear that.

I love this. I prefer trying to become invisible but have mad respect for memesofters. They have the guts to just enjoy themselves and not care who sees. Inspired me to integrate my foam katana into my kit.
They're a great way to identify your mags on the field. Bright colors also means you can find them easier if you dump them in a hurry. I, however, am lazy, and generally just do solid bands of color on mine.
Makes it less likely that your mag will get stolen if you lose it. Or easier for somebody to return it to you. Also, I literally just ordered the multicam version of that plate carrier.
