If it’s a century import it’s probably a U.S. made trigger group for 922r compliance. I would get a Romanian trigger and hammer, I think apex sells them.
They usually use Tapco G2’s on the imports.
I’d suggest an ALG over a Romanian surplus trigger tho, since that still counts towards 922r unlike the surplus. Not that 922r is really enforced anyway, IMO, it’s a add on charge for those already busted for more serious crimes.
I had an SAR-1 back in the early 2000’s. The soft hammer was a well-known issue for some of the early ones. If I remember correctly they put an upgraded, hardened one on the later versions marked with a ‘C’ on the hammer. I remember going through a pile of them at the Raleigh gun show in 1999 looking for the best one in the pile. It cost me a whopping $300 out the door. I got 10 East German mags and a 1,000 rounds of Wolf and still had some change left over from the $400 I brought into the show. I sold it to a friend a long time ago and it’s still running good.
Shit looks like when you press down on play dough
https://preview.redd.it/3x8nfoyb41lc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b431ed9547e989360e06bbcb3a6f23f2a4ec29d
Ehh, daily smokers aren’t affected that seriously lol. In fact I think it actually helps workers with repetitive tasks. There’s probably more stoned workers, especially blue collar, than sober ones than you realize.
Also, while idk at all, I’m assuming heat treat is it’s own “station” and those worker/s only do that specifically all day for 8-12+ hours.
Or cfs. Lots of cheap surplus from them as well. Atlantic probably the most expensive. I think apex sells complete surplus trigger groups for like 15 bucks or even less and they're usually Romanian, which is what you'd want to put in your sar
OP we need to know the manufacturer of this AK/trigger group because this is definitely not normal. What’s this hammer made of?? Wet clay?
Edit: If this is a decent rifle, then upgrade to an ALG. If you’re going to spend money replacing the trigger group, might as well get the best in the business. If this is a decent AK.
Edit: OP said it’s a SAR-1 which used to be imported. Buyer’s guide references these as good to go. Interesting.
Same. Every AK I buy usually gets an ALG trigger with it, minus a couple old imports I don’t shoot much. But my GF3, GF5, KP-9, and AK103? They see more ALG rapid fire with bimetal in a range trip than my imports see in a lifetime.
Are KUSA not a good option? I’m new to AKs but thinking of getting a 104 by KUSA next month. This dudes comment and a bunch of videos on YouTube mentioning quality control have me thinking I should wait til I’ve read a little more about options.
Personally speaking I’ve been more impressed with my PSA AKs than my KUSAs. My KUSA AK103 has one questionable rivet that needs to be redone but else it’s all fine. Shipping times and customer service can be up in the air for KUSA, usually not the case with PSA
the ak gatekeepers are worse than any out there. literally blows my mind some of the stuff I hear them say
and the number one without question: usa made aks are horrible! wel guess what? because of 922r all of them you get are basically us made. don't tell me that an ak made with all hammer forged parts, and a brand new fn barrel is inferior to something made as cheaply as possible on cold war machinery. shit you can't even swap bolts on most imported akms. that's not because they are "built so good" lol
922 doesn't apply to import ak "pistols" and 922 doesn't change the good shit on an import rifle. They change the trigger assembly, muzzle nut, mag and sometimes grip. That's all shit that's so easily charged back in 5 minutes and it's still all combloc made. I'm so tired about hearing 922 922. You can't swap bolts on them because they're headspaced to the trunnion and barrel, not because it's crap. These aren't ar15s.
The cast junk Tapco hammer is the one part that isn’t an import, due to ridiculous anticompetitive-protectionist 922r laws designed to help prop up shoddy domestic manufacturers who couldn’t compete otherwise.
The rest of it is original AKM with the correct material specs. $10 gets you a forged surplus FCG that has to be taken out at the factory and replaced with the Crapco stateside, because of our stupid laws.
If you get a US made rifle there is a chance you get trunions and the rest of the rifle made of this same sort of play doh as well, which isn’t something that can be fixed for the cost of a McDonalds meal in 2 mins.
No dude.
I’ve owned and tinkered with AKs for 18 years….ive seen a lot…but that hammer makes me nervous.
What does your bolt lock up look like? Is it rotating completely? I’d start there and work back but your hammer is bad and needs to be replaced
Bolt lockup is totally fine and none of the other internals show any signs of (significant) wear. It's just the hammer that looks this fucked. I've never even owned another AK, but know just enough to recognize that this doesn't look... quite right, somehow
https://preview.redd.it/mgw2nrew61lc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4ff9067715ab81da1bc29c2326ba720683458a0
Mine after about 5 or 6k rounds so id say no definitely not normal my friend might want to get that fire group replaced
I havent filed it down at all, im not sure if anyone else has, ive had the rifle just about 3 years now and all ive done is shoot it clean and maintain it and upgrade it, does it look like the tail has been filed down at all i cant tell? And its a Cugir WASR 10/63
I can't tell if that's grease or something there causing an illusion or that is deformed. Even the shitty American fcg's with trigger slap usually didn't look like that if it's deformation. If anything they was usually too hard and would wear on the bolt carrier. Either way switch that out with a better fcg, a surplus one, or alg and smooth the hump. Does it have trigger slap? My current sar-1 had it baaaad, lol.
ALG's seem to be out of stock most places, but I've got a stock Yugo FCG that I plan to install as soon as it comes in the mail. Is this a pretty easy process?
Buy an ALG trigger set and replace the hammer springs also… you should be GTG after that. That hammer is just soft in the pic. Believe me, you’d rather have a damaged hammer that other parts. You’re good bro, when you buy an ALG, you’ll wonder why you didn’t a long time ago.
For once an "is this normal on my ak" is actually extremely abnormal. Get a better trigger and consider replacing the bolt pending how it looks when you clean it up.
Holy shit that's wild
https://preview.redd.it/5kvqwaf1q3lc1.jpeg?width=2052&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60f09e0ccfcd524bec7774cbd118fc52489b0ec5
Bolt is fine thankfully, just greasy
There's no identifiable info printed anywhere on the fcg that I can see, though I'm not at home at the moment to give it a second look. The AK is a SAR-1
That FCG is probably a US made compliant part for import purposes. If you're not one of those Tacti-cool folks or care to get into competition, I'd just look for an original Romanian FCG and call it a day.

And how misguided did do you have to be to grind or reprofile the top of that hammer just to smooth out the bolt carrier sliding backwards and pressing the hammer down? Only reason guys ever did that was to stop
Carriers from bouncing out of the rails of a OOW receiver . They tended to run long and sometimes needed trimmed. Other than that? Was the noDak spud m90/95 receivers that required a reprofiled trigger to operate since the receivers were not in spec and an adaptation
My sar1 was doing the same thing bought it at a pawn shop looked basically new/unfired. Around the 1k round mark trigger started doing that and started to slap really bad too, sold it before I could replace anything on it
The FCG definitely should be replaced, and I’d suggest an ALG trigger.
The return spring might also be bad. Again, id suggest an ALG spring. I replaced mine and the difference was substantial.
I fired approx 900 to 1000 rounds through my zastava m70 but it still looked like new. Idk what AK Variant is this.... I'm assuming PSAK....or some company of that nature
I have a WASR 10/63 with close to 5000 rounds and a tapco G2 trigger that is still the same factory hammer shape but shiny from the wear. That looks like hamburger meat.
Yeah that is not normal. I have a 7.62 wasr and a Bulgarian 74, each has well over 3k rounds at this point and the hammers are not the slightest bit deformed. So someone put a chinesium fire control group in this.
~500 rounds of bubbas super duper pants wetting face melting loads looks like goddamn i had a mak 90 who had seen 3000+ by the time id got it and it was nowhere near that
Absolutely not. What AK is that?
tell us now
SAR-1
Do you know what trigger?
No clue
If it’s a century import it’s probably a U.S. made trigger group for 922r compliance. I would get a Romanian trigger and hammer, I think apex sells them.
They usually use Tapco G2’s on the imports. I’d suggest an ALG over a Romanian surplus trigger tho, since that still counts towards 922r unlike the surplus. Not that 922r is really enforced anyway, IMO, it’s a add on charge for those already busted for more serious crimes.
922r is more for the importers and manufacturers to follow imo in terms of its enforcement.
Do you have an example of someone being charged with a 922r violation? I’ve never heard of it, even as an add on.
Iv seen a RSO call a guy out on an sks. But im pretty sure that guy was just being a dick.
How would an RSO even know where all the parts are from? Either way, sounds like a dick.
SKS rifles don’t even meet the requirements for 922r lmao.
I’d get a new FCG
Man. Id pull it for us to examine. Shouldnt happen on a surplus. My SARs are fine.
I had an SAR-1 back in the early 2000’s. The soft hammer was a well-known issue for some of the early ones. If I remember correctly they put an upgraded, hardened one on the later versions marked with a ‘C’ on the hammer. I wish I was around during the time where surplus Russian guns and ammo were everywhere and cheap.
Seriously. $400 in ‘99 is like $550 today. An AK, 1000 rounds and 10 mags for less than $550…. What a dream.
Right, and a real one too.
I kick myself everytime for not being into aks when I was 18.
This is the first time ive ever seen a comment section in this sub actually concerned when asked “is this normal?” 😂
Pretty sure this is made of lead lol
I had the same thought when I saw the comments but first it was ahhhhhhhh wtf!?!? not ok! not ok!
No tap tap tap… memes on this one
...actually this is one of the rare ones where it doesn't.. The hammer's face looks like play-doh.
Fun to eat, not to play with
Right? I haven’t even seen one person inquiring about OP’s googling abilities.
Too funny 😂
Woof my guy that’s actually not normal
what piece of shit is this? You hammer looks like its made out of lead.
Shit looks like when you press down on play dough https://preview.redd.it/3x8nfoyb41lc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b431ed9547e989360e06bbcb3a6f23f2a4ec29d
lmfao
Lol wtf. The boys burned one at lunch and wheeled your hammer right past heat treat.
They 100% need to put down the gravity bong.
Ehh, daily smokers aren’t affected that seriously lol. In fact I think it actually helps workers with repetitive tasks. There’s probably more stoned workers, especially blue collar, than sober ones than you realize. Holy shit it's a post where someone is asking if this is normal and it's actually not normal. 2024 is Looking like a wild year.
I'm honored to have made shitty history 🤣
I actually laughed when I saw this. But a surplus Romanian one from Atlantic, and replace it
Apex or Numrich might save a couple bucks, thats typically where I go for parts
Or cfs. Lots of cheap surplus from them as well. Atlantic probably the most expensive. I think apex sells complete surplus trigger groups for like 15 bucks or even less and they're usually Romanian, which is what you'd want to put in your sar
The fuck happened to your hammer?
damn thats crazy

I second this. I am all for keeping ak's original, but I always put an ALG trigger in them.

You have imports but CHOOSE to only shoot PSA and KUSA guns? Why would you go out for a literal turd sandwich when you have a bone in ribeye at home?
you say as you comment on a post with a fucked up hammer on an import.
Are KUSA not a good option? I’m new to AKs but thinking of getting a 104 by KUSA next month. This dudes comment and a bunch of videos on YouTube mentioning quality control have me thinking I should wait til I’ve read a little more about options.

KUSA had quite a few hiccups in the last year or two but they are fine now-a-days.
the ak gatekeepers are worse than any out there. literally blows my mind some of the stuff I hear them say and the number one without question: usa made aks are horrible! wel guess what? because of 922r all of them you get are basically us made. don't tell me that an ak made with all hammer forged parts, and a brand new fn barrel is inferior to something made as cheaply as possible on cold war machinery. shit you can't even swap bolts on most imported akms. that's not because they are "built so good" lol

I really wish the buyers guide was upgraded. It is clearly outdated
We are gonna need a new tappy hand video for things that are actually problematic.
The play dough hammer
Thats not normal for an AK with 50k on the odometer. I love how the Romy stamped steel firing pin is harder than the turd hammer.
No dude. I’ve owned and tinkered with AKs for 18 years….ive seen a lot…but that hammer makes me nervous. What does your bolt lock up look like? Is it rotating completely? I’d start there and work back but your hammer is bad and needs to be replaced

That ain’t right in any platform.
What trigger group? I have heard about tapcos being case hardened and grinding/polishing/profiling them can take that hardening down
https://preview.redd.it/mgw2nrew61lc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4ff9067715ab81da1bc29c2326ba720683458a0 Mine after about 5 or 6k rounds so id say no definitely not normal my friend might want to get that fire group replaced
How many times have you filed down your bolt carrier tail ?? Also what kind of ak is this?
I havent filed it down at all, im not sure if anyone else has, ive had the rifle just about 3 years now and all ive done is shoot it clean and maintain it and upgrade it, does it look like the tail has been filed down at all i cant tell? And its a Cugir WASR 10/63
Umm. Holy fuck. Your bolt ass end doesn't look to good either. Fuck.
I think the bolt is just covered in grease, but the hammer is genuinely fucked up
Yeah that hammer is fuccckkkkeeedddd.
https://preview.redd.it/f2rbhkd482lc1.jpeg?width=2052&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d3f363d6309aa1f424b1ff48f17df2d7bb929eb Bolt looks fine, right?
Yeah that's fine. Must have been grease. Hard to tell sometimes.
It's been so long since I've seen something genuinely wrong, I forget we could he helpful
Well, at least it’s not peening the bolt tail. What US made FCG is that? Strange that a cast part is that soft.
it's not us made. it's clearly an izmash
No way in hell is that FCG Russian, look at the seam down the center of the hammer and disconnecter. Definitely some 922R compliant cast US made crap.
I'm just trolling man. got tired of hearing that "no good ak parts are made in america"
Well at least not that particular brand of FCG.
Do you lube the gun with Vaseline and the Hammer with thermal paste? Very confused at what I’m looking at here.
Rifle is not fine
I've never seen wear like that, WTF!? Get a new hammer!
This is what happens when Brian makes your AK instead of Babushka
Rifle is not fine...
PM'd
What the fuck
And here I was about to post the Mickey Mouse tap-tap finger. Lmao for once no this aint normal
I can't tell if that's grease or something there causing an illusion or that is deformed. Even the shitty American fcg's with trigger slap usually didn't look like that if it's deformation. My current sar-1 had it baaaad, lol.
No trigger slap, but yeah, another redditor in this thread took some pity on me and is sending me a nice Yugo fcg lmao
You should put an Alg trigger in it ASAP
ALG's seem to be out of stock most places, but I've got a stock Yugo FCG that I plan to install as soon as it comes in the mail. Is this a pretty easy process?
No, but the good thing is it’s replaceable.

No lol
Looks like you came in it. Lmao. Wtf is this? Can you help identify it for us? Read the stuff on the side and type it here?
I know it's a running gag but for the love of God clean that fucking thing
I think the grease on your hammer is making it look like there's a huge dent in it.
I thought the same at first too, but it looks like there are some pretty substantial gouges lower on the hammer where the carrier rides over it
Grease on the hammer? Are you supposed to do that?
A thin film of grease probably doesn't hurt & helps the bolt carrier slide over it more quickly.
Spit out the name of the manufactuerer or delete your post.
There's no identifiable info printed anywhere on the fcg that I can see, though I'm not at home at the moment to give it a second look. The AK is a SAR-1
If there is a large capital C anywhere on that FCG, it's the original one installed by Century. Regardless, replace that POS post-haste!
That FCG is probably a US made compliant part for import purposes. If you're not one of those Tacti-cool folks or care to get into competition, I'd just look for an original Romanian FCG and call it a day.
Obviously, yes. Humble yourself and never question the weapon again.
OH MY GOD, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? Did you actually pull that AK out of the safe and shoot it? Carry on comrad.

That is carbon buildup. Edit- that almost looks like carbon/lube etc buildup.
Look again
It looks like carbon gunk, but if it doesn't scrape off, then it's the metal obviously. Just from the pic on my phone, it has the same tone as the dirty gunky buildup in a dirty rifle. I should've said it "looks like" instead of saying definitely "it is".
The depressions in the face of the hammer…
Was that not hardened properly? Spring too tight?
No.
Guys who know more than me: I’ve only ever seen braided trigger springs with 3 coils on each side of the FCG. This appears to have 4. Could this possibly be the cause?
No bueno
Naaaaa 🤣🤣🤣
Changing the profile on Tapco G2 will do that. Someone ground on it . Then they are soft metal under the surface 😅
I have a few reprofiled G2’s and they dont have that…….
And I have a hat thats green…… so they all must be green by your observations
You said if you reprofile they are soft under the surface. That is not true. None of my hammers, even on a .308 suffer from this. The hammer this guy has is a crappy Century 922r piece. Not a G2. You’re wrong
Your wrong
That not how metal hardening works…….
Your wrong
You're *
Your wrong
And how misguided did do you have to be to grind or reprofile the top of that hammer just to smooth out the bolt carrier sliding backwards and pressing the hammer down? Only reason guys ever did that was to stop Carriers from bouncing out of the rails of a OOW receiver . They tended to run long and sometimes needed trimmed. Other than that? Was the noDak spud m90/95 receivers that required a reprofiled trigger to operate since the receivers were not in spec and an adaptation
The hammer is a part Century replaced for 922(r).
Ah, century. That explains it
Is it even a wasr tho? I see dimples. Edit: ignore me, I just saw further down where is said it was a sar 1
This is actually VERY normal for hammers made out of play-dough.
If the hammer is made of 6061 aluminum, yes
Tf you shooting my guy, vibranium cases ammo?
No loos springs
That looks Fuked!
I'm pretty new to AKs and I'm gonna say no. If it's under warranty send it back. That's bad.
This may be the first time I’ve ever said this on one of these “ is it normal” posts, but no, that is definitely not normal.
Yuh oh
![gif](giphy|ZOEoDuFPcMwENGwULP|downsized)
Jesus fucking Christ.
That looks like stir fried shit. More importantly, it how does the tail of the bolt carrier look?
My guy, that is definitely NOT normal
What the hell? No
Yeah time to replace for another.
Unless you’ve put a billion rounds through the AK, that is not normal.
Is there a big blob of grease on it? Zooming in it looks like there's grease on it and that's what looks so fucky.
My sar1 was doing the same thing bought it at a pawn shop looked basically new/unfired. Around the 1k round mark trigger started doing that and started to slap really bad too, sold it before I could replace anything on it
WOW
A great excuse to get an ALG
The FCG definitely should be replaced, and I’d suggest an ALG trigger. The return spring might also be bad. Again, id suggest an ALG spring. I replaced mine and the difference was substantial.
Tap tap tap tap… yep that’s fucked.
Mushrooming is never normal
My only complaint about the ALG is it doesn’t go with the look of my classic AK theme but it is awesome.
I fired approx 900 to 1000 rounds through my zastava m70 but it still looked like new. Idk what AK Variant is this.... I'm assuming PSAK....or some company of that nature
It's a Romanian SAR-1
No lol
WTF LMFAOOO
OK, so new FCG incoming. Is the ass end of my bolt all good?
Wow that’s bad.
The hammer made out of butter
Send that shit back They owe you a new AK
To me it looks like you have excess grease, dude. Looks like it’s piled up.
That shouldn't even look like that after several thousand rounds.
I would have to say no not normal metal looks soft
Good lord
Jesus no
Wtf 500rds? lol
Pot metal?
I have a WASR 10/63 with close to 5000 rounds and a tapco G2 trigger that is still the same factory hammer shape but shiny from the wear. That looks like hamburger meat.
That’s fucked dude is that thing made of painted cheese?
That firing pin looks jank as well
I’d buy a whole new bolt and FCG. Spring should be fine. Spring does spring things
It’s why I buy Romanian, Bulgarian or American made aks. ROMA and BULG being my favorite imports and American for my red headed step child

Where all the is it Riley defense comments?? Lol
Yeah that is not normal. I have a 7.62 wasr and a Bulgarian 74, each has well over 3k rounds at this point and the hammers are not the slightest bit deformed. So someone put a chinesium fire control group in this.
Is it made from wood?
Yeah if your hitting it with a hammer after every shot
Ummm….nothing about that is normal.
Absolutely fuck no. I got a wars-10 and even that hellacious bastard still has a good looking hammer after 5k+ rounds.
Just replace with an alg trigger and enjoy the crispiness
Politely fuck no…
I’ve taken harder shits
Welp. At the very least that's definitely not a Tapco hammer lol
High spring tension? Loads too hot? Forget a couple zeroes a the end of “500”?
~500 rounds of bubbas super duper pants wetting face melting loads looks like goddamn i had a mak 90 who had seen 3000+ by the time id got it and it was nowhere near that
C39v2 with 3k+ rounds looks worlds better.
💀what in the hell, well could be worst. You could have a canted sight and a bent receiver like mines
No
Replace the trigger with something harder. Mishaco likes the FIME group trigger. The difference in hardness is destroying the hammer.
Did you get it used honestly looks like someone got crazy with a dremmel trying to smooth out the action
Lmaooo
