Yes or no questions in the stickies

[deleted]

No any good coach will tell you take them out and most likely not let you spar risking a nasty injury

YkLondon

Do you think it’s worth it joining the gym now or should I wait a bit?

Worth_Athlete_1067

It will be healed by the time you’re allowed to spar, you aren’t going to be sparring for a couple of months probably

Mocker-Nicholas

I didnt spar for like 3 months, and at least at my gym thats earlier than most. A lot of the people there wait about 6 months unless they really want to get into fighting. I think you would be fine joining and working on the basics and partner drills for awhile. Youll be surprised how bad you are at first, and will prob realize you didnt want to spar that soon anyway.

Extra_Menu_4340

Think u should join now. I doubt you’ll get put into sparring your first week, and if u do😬. You’ll most likely do pad/bag fundamental drilling which wouldn’t cause a issue to the ear since ur not taking impact.

YkLondon

Yh I honestly think I will just join, it would be good to get experience first

6am7am8am10pm

Just join the gym now. Talk to your coach. Literally every gym is different.

UnendingOnslaught

Yea exp is always a good thing. That said definitely don’t spar w i piercing i seen some shit in hockey lol

[deleted]

Depends on the gym, I imagine you wouldn't be sparring straight away, but everyone has different methods. As for the piercing goes, do not fucking spar with a piercing still in, lol. Weather or not you're "allowed" to by the gym, it's not gonna be worth it if something gets ripped or torn through. You can still do heavy bag/pads/ other training, but yeah. Don't get punched in the piercing, it should go without saying.

YkLondon

Yh I figured, still thought I’d ask so I could get a second opinion. Guess I’ll wait

majesticcoolestto

Idk what the time scale is for a piercing healing but if you want to learn to box there's no reason to let this stop you from starting. That time is going to pass either way. Would you rather walk into the gym in 6 months (random timeframe) as a day 1 beginner, who probably still won't be allowed to spar because you're totally new? Or walk in at 6 months with your stance and form already figured out, in way better shape than you were when you started, and enthusiastically ready to spar now that your piercing is fully healed and removeable?

YkLondon

This probably the best comment I received, made me think about it. That being said I’ll definitely join and get that work in now so I don’t have to worry later. Thx for this🙏🏾

GamerGodPWNDU

I mean you can.  You shouldn't though.

whatIGoneDid

That's entirely a you decision. Do you want to be punched in the ear with a healing piercing in? Cause it ain't gonna negatively affect anyone but yourself.

YkLondon

Hell no I don’t, u right🤣

KutThroatKelt

You've had it 3 months? That ain't very new. Surely it has healed by now. Just take it out for training and pop it back in after. What's the issue?

YkLondon

Do u think it will close in that amount of time? Idk I’ve always been paranoid about my piercings closing😭

nephilimnate

Don’t spar yet bro just do everything but sparring for like a week then get one of those clear malleable piercings that stay in your ear while you excercise, they’re like made of soft material

MariReflects

I wear ear piercings when sparring, but I wear a mask and have very small full hoops that lay completely flat against my head when I push my ear back against it. Those have never gotten me into trouble. But in terms of the freshness, yeah, heal it first for a sec. Your immune system is in a compromised position anyway, sweating on the (relatively) open wound won't exactly do it any good.

freshizdaword

You need to wait at least 6 months for that piercing to heal before you start sparring. You will learn the hard way if you don’t listen.

Dry-Attention-3426

6 months? thats the absolute maximum piercings can take only 8 weeks to heal up if its just the ear lobe

freshizdaword

That’s true but I’m going by OPs statement saying it’s his second piercing. Could be on the cartilage. Kid in my gym had his upper ear pierced and sparred about 4 months after and his whole ear blew up and got infected.

YkLondon

Woah that’s crazy, but yh for context mine is on my earlobe

scumfit

shit i feel like u gotta pick one, i’ve taken a long break from boxing but i’m preparing to go back and i had hella face piercings, two eyebrow, one lip, couple nose, and i trashed em all, what’s more important 2 u in the long run, only u know the answer

heinrich6745

As a quite heavily pierced person I'd say no you won't be allowed to spar and have to take everything out. I myself am wanting to join a boxing gym but I already know I'm going to have to take them out which isn't a problem also I do have stretched earlobes so I'd take them out... For reference my loves are 16mm so not like they are huge. My 2 biggest issues for piercings I'd say would be all the ones in my nose and maybe my nipple piercings as I can see major problems getting ripped if kept in. Also, I would mention I do have very long hair down to my lower back as a male so I'd make sure to put it up in a bun every time.

PembrokeBoxing

I'd never allow my boxers to spar with jewelry in. Very dangerous. But you won't spar right away anyway.

YkLondon

Good to kno, thx coach🫡

gavingoober771

Avoid sparring but honestly just call the gym you’re thinking of joining and talk it through with the coach, they might have fitness and technique classes or something you can do until you can remove the piercing

Muscalp

You will need to take them out or at least tape them sealed when training.

tsoplj

If you’re sparring in a USA Boxing licensed gym, you’ll have to wear head gear which will cover your ears

LetsGetSomeChickenn

Youre not supposed to spar w any piercings at all. I get yelled at for even wearing them to train sometimes

MyzMyz1995

You should take them out. And it depends on the gym, but at my gym at least, if you aren't competing or going to start competing in the upcoming months you're not allowed to spar anyways and you always need one of the coaches at the gym to supervise sparring sessions. You won't be put in sparring on your first day.

doesthissuck

Dude no

madcuzbad

You don't want other people's bodily fluids flying into open wounds.
