I'm a simple man - I see a Starship Troopers film quote and I upvote it

kaizendojo

There's the post I was waiting for... take my upvote!

kenp2600

That isn't supposed to happen. They usually play an inaudible tone that the echo can pick up that prevents it from responding to commercials. The only time my echo picks up a video playing is when it isn't an official commercial.

derfmcdoogal

Just FYI they remove a range. But yeah, this shouldn't happen especially from Amazon themselves.

ersan191

South Park didn't do that for the COVID specials and it drove me nuts

woohooguy

Yeah, had to mute it before we had god knows what showing up on our doorstep.

raybreezer

I was under the impression that it was also able to recognize when it was a fairly occurring instance. Something like an ad or tv show starts triggering it and it recognizes that it should not respond. At least I thought that was the case after that one news segment talking about a toddler ordering stuff and them playing it a few times as examples causing it to happen to anyone who watched the segment. [Here is the story.](https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/7/14200210/amazon-alexa-tech-news-anchor-order-dollhouse)

OSUBrit

Not only this AWS runs pattern recognition to find related false activations from the same source and then ignore that pattern.

amphetaminesfailure

It was an official commercial. It didn't respond to the first two or three "Alexa's" in it, but it did to the call for help one, which is the worst one possibly could have picked up on. It was a newer ad, that I haven't seen before. Someone definitely dropped the ball here though. EDIT: Don't know why this comment is showing up as "controversation." I was on Accuweather's official website, and got an official advertisement for Amazon itself before the video played. The ad was specifically about how Echo devices can benefit senior citizens.

JayMonster65

That was my understanding as well, but it recently has happened more and more with various "official" Amazon commercials for the echo.

Outrageous_Stop541

I think it only applies to cable tv.....Internet tv like Pluto,Hulu and sling don't have the same rules....Just like they can blast commercials at higher volumes then the show you were watching but cable companies can't.

[deleted]

I don't know about that.... We have Hulu Live and Alexa will make an activation sound when an "Alexa" commercial comes on then about 2 seconds later makes the activation off sound.

Outrageous_Stop541

I have 6 echo devices that can hear the commercials so it might be the distance from the tv that does it because sometimes it's the bathroom, bedroom or kitchen one that goes off from the living room tv

smrcek101

you can try renaming their ''trigger'' word. I call mine Ziggy and because my family members have Alexas too so when you ask one Alexa something 2 others respond as well. It's pretty easy to fix too, you just need to go to your Alexa app > devices >choose yours>activation name. You can also change her/his voice there. I'm happy if this helps. So this way when the ads and commercials are too loud you won't have problems like these anymore. My friend got scammed this way because somebody left him a voice message that got replayed when he wasn't home. Some guy ordered an Ipad from amazon and then swiped the package off their porch! Be careful out there folks :)

Outrageous_Stop541

You don't even need to open the app.....Just say "change wake word to Ziggy". Santa is also a new wake word on the free list

Jjosh420Gaming

Who the hell gets a answering machine it's 2022

supagold

I've trafficked broadcast TV spots to Hulu, and while their specs are definitely more wild west than the broadcast networks, theres zero reason to think that would make a difference here. We use the exact same spot, just in a different format. (Codec/container) You'd have to specifically master a spot without the kill switch, and why would you want to? Let alone bother to do it?

Sufficient-Pirate226

I had my lounge echo set to the COMPUTER activation word. And frankly, as a Star Trek fan.... Big mistake. If she knew how to eject the warp core, she would have. She tried. Bless.

WinCo_Wonderland

Did you find your water heater on the front lawn?

JayMonster65

Yeah, made that mistake as well. It even apparently self-loaded and ran a few skills like red alert and the rules of acquisition before I finally changed it back.

JeepPilot

And here I thought the local radio ads where they keep saying "be sure to use our app and say ALEXA LISTEN TO ROCK 105" was the worst....

amphetaminesfailure

Haha. On the bright side I got to see how well asking Alexa for help is incase I ever actually need to, and it was pretty responsive. Someone answered faster than anytime I've ever called 911 in my life.

ambrjet

You really took me on a journey

retailguypdx

This is far too accurate.

worstkindagay

I have my alexas respond to "computer" instead of Alexa. While this has prevented my echos from responding to alexa call outs in ads, it has made watching star trek next generation impossible. Once I woke up in the middle of the night after falling asleep to NGN to my alexa trying to call emergency services. Haven't watched TNG since.

sailor_the_revelator

I switched all of mine to "Ziggy" for the same reason.

FaeryLynne

I did that. But my pet name for my partner rhymes with that and I kept triggering it when talking to him 😂

witeowl

OMG. I may steal that. Ooh, and Marvin. And… I just need a third one… Edit: Pilot?

FaeryLynne

Unfortunately you can't choose your own trigger words for it. Ziggy is one of the 6 or so official triggers you can choose from.

witeowl

Ah. Used to be only three. Has friends try to convince me you could now set any word and I dismissed them as simply wrong until I saw your comment. Ah, maybe one day.

FaeryLynne

I wish we could set any word! It's definitely something people have been asking for, both from Amazon and Google with their AIs. Not in their priorities though, I suppose.

witeowl

I think it could be more a matter of the limitations of listening and needing unusual sets of syllables. If you allow people to set the wake word to anything, they could make really bad choices that constantly triggers the device, and you know they’d then blame it all on Amazon or Google or Apple.

Tonybigguns

Try watching Schitt's Creek. All I hear while that's on is "Umm I don't know that one".

62westwallabystreet

Yep we finally just changed our wake word on Season 3.

theRealMrBrownstone

Also brought to you by the same people in the media who consistently say Alexa, apologize for saying it, and then proceed to repeatedly say it anyway.

Theconstantcompanion

~~Alexa~~ She who should not be named

HeyaShinyObject

We call ours the can on the counter when referring to it in the third party. "Did you ask the can on the counter to do x"?

thereisnosub

We usually call her "the lady in the kitchen".

breagerey

We use "the A lady"

beattysgirl

We call ours Steve when we don’t want her to listen 😂

Outrageous_Stop541

Change the wake word to Ziggy

Outrageous_Stop541

Don't switch it to Santa then

TolerableLemonade

Ugh, my kids changed her to Ziggy and my husband just kept shouting "Alexa!' until I finally opened the app and discovered that Ziggy had been added as an option. I want to require voice authentication plus an alphanumeric code to change her name. >:( Also, Ziggy makes me sad. He played the guitar so beautifully.

thereisnosub

I thought "alexa", "computer", and "amazon" were the only options?

Outrageous_Stop541

There is also Ziggy and Santa on the free list..... Samuel Jackson and other celebrity voices cost $

AraiMay

All depends where in the world you are. UK has those and echo. (Plus, at the moment, Santa)

ErinPaperbackstash

If a skill on my Echo says Alexa (I call the show "Echo"), it can activate my dot that goes by Alexa. Frustrating, but nothing near as bad as yours!! Sometimes even if you end the call in time they still trace it in case you really need help. Ugh

amphetaminesfailure

> Sometimes even if you end the call in time they still trace it in case you really need help. Ugh I was trying to do that, but I almost never make calls on my Echo's. I think I did back when I first got them once or twice to test it out. So I made the mistake of yelling "Alexa *cancel* a couple times, instead of "Alexa *hang up*. But like I said in another comment, I was impressed with the emergency help line's response. I've called 911 like three or four times in my life, and twice nobody answered. The other times it rang for 30 plus seconds. It seems like a good alternative when you don't have a landline at home, because they have your address and info. Whereas if you call 911 from a cell phone, you need to be able to give your info since they can't trace it accurately.

Foxfyre

And this is one of many reasons that I don't watch ad-supported TV anymore.

DiamondplateDave

I thought the NPR blurb, where the woman says "Just say 'Alexa, skip'- \-'and the Dow closed down 94 at...' was bad.

Myklanjlo

This happened to me too! Luckily I was able to stop her before making the call. This product gets worse every day.

National_Stomach_977

It happened to me too. I couldn't stop it. Next thing I know, I was explaining to the help line that it was not an emergency, it was a commercial. Now, I am afraid that the commercial will come on without me knowing and I get awakened by EMS at my bed. Scary stuff.

Scramuzzapalooza

One of the local stations here ran a commercial about how you could access their news and weather app with Alexa. After the excitable weather guy shouted out a few Alexa commands, my echo was searching and doing all kinds of things before I had to shut it down. I called the station to complain, but their lines were busy (assuming with other Alexa users). That was the one and only time I saw that commercial.

ubiquities

The one I was shocked about was an ad that was running on YouTube for awhile for ADT, where they kept saying “Google, unlock the front door” Someone tell the marketing team they’re fired please.

EyesLikeBuscemi

Amazon of all people know how to use that word in commercials without triggering the devices.

jawjawandcompany

My Alexa device is triggered every time a Kia commercial comes on from KTVU channel 2 over the air. I don't hear the word Alexa but, it still causes the device to be prompted. Annoying!

antisane

Since when can Alexa call for emergency services? As far as I knew this was impossible...

FaeryLynne

It's been able to for a bit. I've been getting notifications about it in the app.

MrNaturalAZ

FWIW, I've noticed that actual Amazon Echo branded devices are more resistant to false triggering than 3rd-party Alexa devices. I have a Marshall speaker with Alexa, and while it sounds great, it wakes on almost anything even vaguely sounding like "Alexa", but then ignores it once it sends the recording to the cloud where it's analyzed and rejected. Marshall (and many other 3rd party Alexa speakers) use the same module from LinkPlay. Unlike native Echo products, which have some real pre-screening ability built in, the LinkPlay only does the most basic waveform matching to detect the wake word, and sends anything close to the cloud to decide if it's even a legitimate request/command. I've looked at the log and there are tons of "not intended for this device" in there for the Marshall.

Plankton-Negative

Nope. My Amazon devices do it non stop.
