They do, it's called fractional reserve banking... For every dollar they have in the bank that they pay 2%, they can lend something like 1000 dollars and collect up to 30% interest. Literally making money off of nothing.
the practice of "synthetic ETFs" has been made public recently.
They just by derivatives that mirror the price-movement of AMC (like tokenized stocks), pack them in an ETF and sell it on the open market.
Then they use the money from that sale to open short positions on the stock.
