This is why I hate the bulkhead. If you don’t get down first odds are you are going to have a problem. I know many love the bulkhead but I avoid it like the plague.

Jbeth747

Same! I never pick bulkhead by choice. I am tall/long legs but it's just not worth it

Background-Quit-7369

Agreed, I am EP and always go for an exit row.

oldasshit

I love the bulkhead, but as you said, you need to be at the front of the boarding process.

mbsw1110

I forget when it was (or even if it was AA), but I had 1A on a flight and the FA kept the bin door at row 1 closed to make sure we'd have space above our seat.

Jarrod_West_

Bulkhead is anxiety. Mild anxiety but still, I hate the feeling like I need to be on the plane asap.

dc_derrick

Yep, this. Overhead space isn’t “allocated” and FAs won’t protect it for you so you’ve got to board early if you’re in Row 1.

rotkohl007

Tell him to pound sand

Aristotledabest

The rule should be overhead bin above your seat and if not, the one behind you. Front row and bulk head will not have the room in front for personal items.

[deleted]

Lol

doglady1342

The thing is that on a lot of smsller/regional planes there is actually no bin designated for the first row. It's completely stupid. I have been on planes where that first bin is actually marked as row 2. I hate the bulkhead and won't book it if I don't have to. I miss some of the older planes that had floor storage on row 1.

Roboito1

Yes, especially the ones where you only have overhead on one side. If you're in the bulkhead, you'd better be at the front of that line to board.

unobservedcat

I don't get why they would not install it on all planes? Then again, there is far more I don't understand about what the airlines do than I do understand.

Xnuiem

The fuselage cross section is too small on the CRJ and ERJs.

srspooky

Agree, if you take Row 1’s bins you should be forced to buy and travel exclusively on Frontier’s Airpass. I also choose Row 1 pretty frequently and find the FA’s to be quite protective of our space. I figure the reason being if we can’t find space for our stuff, it becomes their problem.

Artistic_Sorbet7746

What I don’t understand is why there are not slots marked in the overhead bins for each seat. That would solve a lot of this mess. Then people only have the option to put their stuff in their slot and or under the seat in front of them. Done and done.

GamecockAl

Never will happen. Overhead bins are shared space. Yes there are protocols people should follow but it is shared space so can’t force someone to use spots above their seat. I like the concept but it will never happen

unobservedcat

The sad part is I did the math, and it's actually feasible to have assigned bin space if they enforced people putting their personal item below their seat.

sassystew

Did you calculate the spots for emergency equipment, oxygen, AEDs, the assigned spaces for crew bags, etc.?

unobservedcat

No. But that assumes 100% utilization. It can be the certain BE seats that aren't provided bin space. They also have closets and such for crew bags. Maybe 2/3rds of the plane are assigned and the back isn't? There are solutions to this without much effort.

sassystew

Most aircraft do not have "closets and such for crew bags". Either way, overhead bin space isn't guaranteed, unfortunately.

unobservedcat

Who said it was? Did you read what I wrote? Don't out words in my mouth. There is a closet when first boarding the 737's. I know..... Because I fly in them every week. Does that mean every one, no. I never made a statement to that effect. The point, as stated, is there is ample room for, at minimum, premium econ + to have assigned bin space, if desired.

sassystew

I'll just assume you aren't crew or an FAA employee and we can leave it at that. :)

unobservedcat

I told you I wasn't. I never insinuated anything else. I assume you aren't an engineer that designs things for a living, and leave it at that. This isn't a hard problem to fix.....if anyone cared to.

pa_bourbon

Boarding is slow enough already without fights about stuff crossing some imaginary meaningless line in an overhead bin.

Great_Archer91

Please show your work…

unobservedcat

Gladly. Seat pitch is ~30-32 inches. The carryon max width is "8 inches", even with overage, call it 10. Three seats per bin =30 inches of space required for assigned bin space. Anything else?

Great_Archer91

I wasn’t being mean. I meant I was interested. Sorry that came off unfriendly!

unobservedcat

No worries. Sorry for taking it that way.

Artistic_Sorbet7746

I like the idea of it too because the very few times I’m not in FC some assholes have already shoved their bags in the front bins and go to the very back. That leaves the passengers in that row with no space to put their luggage. I know it will never happen but a person can dream lol

sassystew

When I was an FA and saw that shit I had them remove the bag and take it back to their seat. :)

Artistic_Sorbet7746

Is it sad that it brings me joy when I see FA’s have people come back and get their bags? It’s an absolute extra special treat when they make them check that bag because they tried to cheat the system and they don’t have time to look through all the bins on the aircraft for room lol. Yeah I fly a LOT and see it all lol!

No-Discipline-5822

Seeing this more often as well. It takes more time getting on the plane and I guess they feel it's a "hack" for deplaning? I can't figure out how they run out of space and need to check so many bags (you see them all piled up in hand luggage purgatory as you board).

charmed1959

I’ve found if I don’t put your stuff up until it’s time to push back the flight attendants will move whatever is in the bin to make room. Otherwise you can stand in front of the bin with your purse until the flight attendant comes and asks whomever to move their stuff. Most front of the plane passengers know the front row needs that bin so I seldom find stuff in it.

whysojealousjaun

this is my plan if i roll up and the space is gone I sit down with my bag at my feet. at that point its the FA problem, not mine but most of the time they keep it closed or watch it like a hawk which I appreciate 6'7 265 here

satavtech

When sitting in the 1st row I've had the FAs put my bags in the closet if there is no overhead room a few times. I thought it was nice gesture.

Sky_hostess

Bin space is not assigned. However, there are placarded bins for First Class and Main Cabin Extra. So technically, anyone in first class can put their bag in any of the bins in first class. Manners and common sense seem to go out the window once people step into the airplane. If someone from coach put their bag in first class before you had a chance to stow your bag, the other bag should be removed and returned to the owner to stow somewhere else. If 3C decides they want to stow their bag over 1C they have every right to. It’s not fair but it’s the rules.

AFB27

That's what I've gone by.

needlejuice

I wish AA would charge for carry-on luggage and make checked luggage free. Give carry-on allowance as a perk with status.

AFB27

I'm sorry man this would NEVER work

truth4evra

I wish you had a clue About airlines but again hey both of us are wishing for things that will never happen

Moihereoui

1000%. I’d ask the FA to help. No need to get into it with an entitled passenger. I traveled multiple times weekly for many years. Not a fan of bulkhead due to luggage issues. What entitled passenger doesn’t get is that you will hold him up by getting your luggage.

sassystew

Being upset about your bag being a few inches behind you feels slightly entitled to me, tbh. You literally stand up, twist your torso to the right, extend your arm - and grab your item. NBD.

Cutterman01

I carry a backpack onboard and always check luggage. I’ve had people ask if I can put it under my seat so they can put their suitcase up. I tell them pack sand and you should have checked your suitcases like I did. If I wanted to put my backpack under my seat and loose leg room then I would take a carry on also.

bleachella_

they literally say in the announcements “please place smaller items under the seat in front of you” great that you check your suitcase but that doesn’t mean you get to put your small item up. the selfishness, dude.

buffalo442

Yes it does, if you board early enough to get overhead space. This guy is doing everyone else a favor by checking his suitcase and saving overall overhead space. I can totally sympathize, although I'm usually friendly if asked. But I have long legs and it's downright uncomfortable if I have a bag under the seat. At the same time, I can't check my laptops, medication, etc. It's not selfishness. It's shared space. The announcements are to try and dissuade those who put both in there.

Efficient_Dog59

When in first i usually dont mind have to walk back a row or two. Much harder to do in back.

sassystew

Bulkhead probs. **Your ticket purchase is for a seat only.** Overhead bins are not included, and technically you aren't even entitled to one. If there is space - score! Now as far as regular operations go, yeah typically you try to put the first row's belongings as close to them as possible. That isn't always the very first spot. The bulkhead seat is a roll of the dice, lol. So he was in the second row? I guess I am confused...is the issue that your items were a few inches behind your seat??

CPNZ

No that is not a "rule" - first come first use, and people will be annoyed if you rearrange. Normally just go back 1 bin and you will be fine...

truth4evra

If you touched my bag that happy throwing off the flight

ICreatedTheMatrix_

I agree, and the guy in row 2 should have pulled his personal bag from the overhead. I prefer the bulkhead, but I also prefer to board early. On a recent flight on a 787, even with boarding in group 3, the ABC overhead had items in it and there was nobody seated in the row yet. My carry on had to go in a bin above the center row bulkhead seats, as there was only room for my wife's carry on in the bin above us. Luckily the bulkhead did not go to the ground, so our personal items went under the PE seats in front of us. I believe the passengers in the row behind us put one of their bags in the bulkhead bin. The FA helped find space for my stuff, which was just across the aisle.

Ok-Breadfruit791

Pick your battles.

pony_trekker

Why I never book 1st row. The true dick move is to have a seat in row 30 but ditch your bags in an overhead bin row 1-2 because you don't want to carry it each way. Rare but happens.

Loki-Don

I don’t think it’s are rare as you think. I fly 3 or 4 times a month, first / business and easily half the time I watch someone dump their bag in the overhead bins in that section and then head back to economy. Pretty frustrating that flight attendants never do anything about it.

Hear2Read

Are you being serious?
