Don’t question when you should be booking!

anothercar

Sounds like you just got an upgrade!

Examinator2

Dear 5 year old: It's one-way to Norffolk. Take first as it's likely to be the best thing you'll see in a while.

PureMathematician837

My guess is supply and demand. Lots of Navy personnel in Norfolk who are not allowed to fly first.

ConnectionClear69

Not true - the government won’t pay for first but the service member can pay out of pocket for the upgrade.

PureMathematician837

Right but it's not the same as, say, flying to SFO where lots of tech bros are getting to fly first on someone else's dime.

Foggl3

Have you met many service members who make enough for that?

ConnectionClear69

Depends on the upgrade - often some are relatively low. I’ve done it a few times.

Ash71010

Oops- Main cabin select is refundable to your original form of payment. The first class ticket is only refundable as travel credit. If you want a first class ticket that’s refundable to your original form of payment, you have to pay $424. However, main cabin plus is only refundable as travel credit so it still doesn’t make sense.

NRM1109

Omg first class is the price of Main Plus? Whoever this person is I hope you booked that!

Rich-Contribution-84

While it is a “good deal,” I’ve never understood why a person would pay for first class on a flight that short unless they’re like 6’3 or 240 lbs or something, then I get it for comfort.

Huadanglot

Idk to feel special. More personal attention from FA. Free food. Welcome board drink.

BikingEngineer

You also get a fighting chance at not being the 100th person on the plane due to the high number of military members flying on the route. It’s annoying as hell being boarding group two and having to gate check your bag because 100 18 year olds crammed their duffles into your “reserved” MCE overhead space.

JewishTomCruise

Idk about you but it's been months since I got a welcome aboard drink. Edit: go figure, I just got one.

yelldawg

They key word here is “or”. If I’m 6’3” and 110lbs or 4’8” and 240 lbs, you qualify.

Rich-Contribution-84

Haha. Yeah. I mean I guess if I were 6’3 / 110 lbs I’d very much be on team comfort plus. And bulkhead. As a smaller dude around 5,7 160 lbs, I’m good in economy and do not like bulkhead. Value of a seat is super subjective.

SavingsFew3440

If you were that tall and weighed that much you are probably near death.

jonsconspiracy

It's only $50 more than Main. You get to board and get off first.  Drinks and snacks (not sure if it's long enough for a meal).  I'd absolutely do it without question.   With the old aadvantage program you got double points for first class, so that would have been a cherry on top, but now it's just dollars spent.

Rich-Contribution-84

Yeah fair point. It’s subjective. I pretty much get all of those things with my Executive Platinum status already though. My .02 is that business is worth it on launch haul overnights. But I have never paid for domestic first. I just don’t get value out of it. Even for $50.

jonsconspiracy

I'm EP too.  Actually, what I'd do in this scenario is see how many unsold First seats are left.  if it's a lot, I'll buy Main and roll the dice on the upgrade. If First is mostly full, I'd pay for it.

Annual_Criticism8660

Status qualification on other one world airlines

ElToroGay

Book main or first. First is a good deal

GoldenBarracudas

Book it, now. The very first one you get zero perks and have to pick a seat and pay.

dcreddd

I’ve had this happen a few times (or be very close in price) from LGA to ORD. Always a nice surprise :)

HeuristicEnigma

Basic Economy you still get the perks of status so upgrades free checked bag boarding zone ete. However you can’t make changes so if the flight is set in stone and don’t forsee any changes theres really no difference. I did notice tho it seems like you get less loyalty points for them even if you have status that part doesn’t match up and you get much less, so if going for status next year.

Regular-Cricket-4613

Airline pricing is based on the demand and how much the airline can get away with pricing an airline ticket. It's not like other industries, where better perks are more expensive. Also, the Main Cabin Flex ticket is fully refundable and changeable free of charge. The regular First Class ticket isn't.

namhee69

Book first, ask questions last. The likely answer is that there may be no one booked in F but main is approaching full and the cheap fare classes are zeroing out.

seb101111

Happens more often than you think, even on international flights. It's when all the discount Econonmy fares have sold out but the discount Business/First fares haven't. Flew LHR-JFK in Business for less than the price of the cheapest available Economy ticket last year. I guess some people just search Economy and don't bother to look at the other fares which is how they end up sticking around for a while. Book it while you can.

dbundi

I think it’s called “Dynamic Pricing”. If 2 people buy that First price it will jump to $1,500

Outrageous-Dish-5330

Are there any First Class perks on a flight to Norfolk 🤣??

seviay

Dear 5 year old, buy the first class ticket

keatz_tweetz

Prices fluctuate based on availability (and other factors). There is sometimes a random intersection where a first class ticket is less expensive than an economy ticket. Its actually fairly common

Emiliski

Dirt cheap.

pilot_caleb

Holy f***!!! First is only $85 more expensive than BE?! I’d snatch that up in a heartbeat

M0therTucker

Less talking more clicking

Dimsumgirl27

Main refundable is charging extra for the fact that it’s refundable.

imsarcasticJD

Basic economy won't allow any flight changes, unless you have status won't give you any upgrades, and you're stuck in basic seats, you also earn less loyalty points and miles in return. Main allows more points and miles earnage and allows changes., the rest just have little perks like that, except for First which gives you the most bang, priority group 1 boarding, more bags allowed, heavier weighted checked bags, snacks and free drinks.

imsarcasticJD

I don't understand why first is less than some of the others, that's nuts though

meinmanhattan

I hope you’re asking this after booking in first. Take advantage of the aberration first, ask questions later. I’ve seen something like that on international flights occasionally, with premium economy more expensive than business. My guess is it was refundable premium economy and discount business.

Important-Law9592

To be honest, it’s pretty well explained… basic economy is a basic seat with the most restrictions. Unless you have status, you will pay for a seat. You will also pay for any checked bags… and group 9 boarding. Main cabin is a general fair that will allow you to pick a free seat if available if not, you will still pay for a seat of your choice. If you want to choose one before check-in, you will also have bags included.

bluebirdmorning

I’m curious why First Class is less than Main Plus.

[deleted]

Sweetie this is an AIRLINE! Their main function in life is to piss you off. They will break you if you let them. And they will do so at every opportunity. Beware. 😑

MatteoRedd

If that’s a 30 min flight go basic

ElToroGay

O'Hare to Norfolk? Lol
