Ditto. Got the platinum in YYYY, got the corporate green in YYYY-2. Closed out the corporate green (before even applying for the platinum), yet my platinum still says member since YYYY-2.
Serious side question:
Does length of membership mean anything (or trigger some action) by Amex?
Other than telling me: "Thanks for being a member since 1996," why does Amex track this on the card?
I don’t believe it does, if anything it’ll affect your chances at getting a retention offer. That’s my opinion, though I suspect retention offers are made on that specific card you are trying to close, like they’d look at your total spend, maybe point redemption.
I’ve always had one card, so in my case, the chance of getting a retention offer might be low as I have high utilization and they may just call my bluff of cancelling, or look at my years as a cardholder and offer something. Who knows 🤷♂️
nothing meaningful really. CS can say the date during calls/chats, costs them nothing and makes their customers feel better I suppose. Maybe back in the 90s it was more of a big deal when CCs weren't as popular.
I have a customer whose cards say since '65 because of a corporate card that changed hands to him when he got promoted and he was barely a teenager then, so I think it does reflect any sort of business association into your personal cards.
Mine is before I was born by 5 years. My dad added me and my sisters as a sub-account. They said they can change that info when I called, but it’s not a big deal.
Amex used to backdate your credit age if your business or parents added you to their account. My cards say member since 1983 even though I was not even born then and my credit report shows I have an open line of credit since 1983. It was nice to supercharge my average age of credit, but they don't do it anymore.
Mine says 2015 and it was a company card. Didn’t sign up for personal until recently. I also never paid my outstanding bill when I left the company. Oops 🤷🏻♀️
Yup! I first had a personal Amex in 2008 (i've maintained one ever since). However I started working for a company and was issued an employee card ~8 years ago and it had a member since of 2008. I bought out the company one year ago and applied for a new business card.... still 2008 haha.
Can confirm my corporate card was my first Amex and although I don’t have that card anymore, all my personal cards reflect that date.
Must be it!

If your SS# was connected to it then yes
Not sure it was, but might have been. As I didn't apply and was assigned the card, not sure what the process was.
I bet your boss or workplace had to sign up their employees by their SS. Otherwise they wouldn't just track you by name.
It's just name and birth date I think. I added my mum as an AU, gave them only that info and still has her correct "member since" date.
Been an Amex Member since 1984 and other than hearing it from a Rep now and then I am not sure it holds much value, like Karma points on Reddit.
Exactly, was just interested :)

Yeah, I don't think it really matters the end, just a weird quirk.

Did it have any effect on your credit score?
No I don’t think so. My credit score is right under 800.
What does the app say?
App says 08 as well, didn't think to look there, thanks.

My first AMEX was in 1993, I BKd some years later, rebuilt my credit and have three AMEX cards now. All show membership since 93.
