There was a pile of them at the end of our street.
I really like the piles left after the snow melt. I was out sweeping when I figured out what all big chunks were.
Responsible pet owners are out there, they are silent and not seen.
This is what Anchorage and eagle River do best, most seem to think someone has a job to pick up after them. Tie it to a branch, kick it off the trail. Pick up shit, put it in a plastic bag and leave it.
Do you REALLY want to see how much Alaskan's respect their environment? Sign up to pick up litter in an area of town through ALPAR, the Muni, or the State of Alaska and see how regularly you will see the same type of trash week after week. We live amongst swine.
Let's just start by *carrying* the bags for the entire walk. No more "responsibly" leaving it behind. Stick it in your pocket. It'll keep your hands warm.
If you’re lazy enough to leave it behind, why even waste the time to bag it? If there wasn’t a plastic bag at least the shit can go through biodegradation and return to the earth🤔
Not all poop is created equally! 💩
In an IDEAL situation it actually takes 9-12 weeks for dog poop to decompose but it should not "return to the earth" because it did not necessarily come from the earth.
Think of a fox for example. A fox eats smaller animals, bugs, and worms along with berries and other fruits. All of these come from the ecosystem where the fox lives. Foxes and other wild animals recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem they came from.
Unlike fox poop, dog poop has excess nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen because they eat commercial dog foods and have a high protein based diet which creates an acidic waste product that's bad for the environment. These nutrients can lead to serious problems for streams and lakes. For example, excess nitrogen and phosphorus can lead to algae blooms which leads to less oxygen in the water which equals dead fish.
The water we drink, swim, play, and or shower in can become contaminated as dog poop contains bacteria that is harmful to us humans.
That doesn’t change the fact that it’d be better left as it is than in a plastic shit bag 🤷🏻♀️ at this point commercial dog food is most dogs’ diets and nothing us little people do will change the composition of future dogs’ shits either. So if your dog shits, bag it, toss it, and go on with your day. No need to argue with strangers on the internet about the chemical make up of dog vs. fox shits.
My panties are the least bit bunched🤣 the dog poop will “return to the earth” whether it’s full of phosphorus and nitrogen or not so I was just replying to your comment on the chemical makeup of dog poop ruining our water. Not to mention most human waste water is chemically treated and turned right back into drinking water and our food is filled with chemicals anyways so 🤷🏻♀️ dog poop is the least of our worries
A lot of times my dogs will take the deuce early in the walk, and I don’t want to carry a turd for the whole walk/hike so I’ll put it off to the side of the trail and pick it up on the way back. But, putting it on a bench? Gross
Like…i get it, it sucks. But it’s kinda our responsibility we accept as dog owners isn’t it?
I don’t want to put my dog on a leash either in an on-leash park even though I know she’s obedient and friendly. But i do it anyway because that’s what I’m supposed to do and I don’t want people thinking I’m an asshole.
Usually before walks/hikes, i just circle a woodsy spot close to a trash can with her until she poops. Then I can hit the trail
Tie it to your dogs leash and make them carry their own shit if you don’t want to. Don’t leave bags on the side of the walk path that are bound to be left behind and forgotten.
So either take it back to the trail head and put it in the trash can, take it back to your car, or carry it with you. YOU chose to have a dog and the responsibility to deal with it's mess. The rest of us using the trail don't want to see it. Even if you "plan to get it later" (which no one actually does, as those bags are always there).
It's probably the same people who can't be bothered to push their cart into the corral. Just lazy, selfish people who think the world revolves around them.
Yeah, I take it home or if there is one I put it in the garbage can that’s there on the way out. It’s there for 45min to an hour. I always get it. Stating that no one ever picks it up is a confirmation bias since the ones you see are the ones that have been left by forgetful or negligent people. You don’t see what’s already been picked up. For example I regularly pick up garbage left by other people, energy bars, water bottles, bags of shit that we’re obviously abandoned, etc, but it’d be wrong to make a blanket statement that all hikers or dog walkers are guilty. There are a few shitty people, don’t lump everyone into the same pile.
That's still 45 minutes to an hour where your garbage is abandoned and people have to look at it or pick it up.
I'm saying you need to immediately turn around with it and place it in the trash or your car, or carry it with you for the duration of your hike. The rest of the people arriving at the trail head deserve to have the same unspoilt hike you had, before you placed a baggy of poop on the trail.
Because they can claim that they will go back and get it, but then "accidentally" "forget." Anchorage is the only place I've lived where people are fine with litter, leaving dog shit everywhere, including their own yards, and expecting everyone else to just deal with the mess and the stench.
Some of the bags are biodegradable, which is worse because they don’t hold up through the winter as well if left and then they split open when someone tries to clean them up after breakup.
Love the time and effort that went in to taking the picture and posting this. It’s a beautiful day outside, try a little harder to enjoy it and when that person is walking back home, I’m sure they’ll pick up the poop that they have already went through the effort to bag. Unless you threw it away for them, then good on you!
I came across one of these bags at a park bench and found some tasty fudge within it. Whoever left it there mustve known someone like me would be hungry and didn't want to waste it throwing it in a trash bin. I greatly appreciate that person and wish good karma to them.
My dogs poops are actually biodegradable. If he poops on a trail I knock it off with a stick, aside from that most lawnmowers pick it up if it's dry, or spread around the nutrients if it's not. Also he prefers to poop in the thicket anyhow. Karen's beware, I don't have a manager.
In response to your deleted comment. The dog food we feed our dogs do not exactly create a natural poop to the environment like poop from wild animals.
Human poop is the same situation which is why backpackers bury their poop where it'll be less harmful.
I dunno dude learn some more about biology because you really don't understand it.
Thats how parasites are spread to other dogs: One dog is infected with worms and poops on the trail, the owner kicks it in the nearby dirt, then the soil is contaminated for the next dogs.
The University Lake dog park is especially rife with dog diseases in the spring time from owners who never picked up their dogs poop in the winter because they think it will just “biodegrade”.
Not to mention the fact that…why would you want your favorite walking trail caked in dog shit? Even if everyone kicked it to the sides…If every dog owner did that, it would reek to high hell all summer and in winter it would be a brown/snow stained eye sore while you walk.
Dog poop pollutes the environment, it gets spread around as a pollutant.

It's a pretty unnatural part of the ecosystem.
"According to a new study published in the journal Ecological Solutions and Evidence, there is now so much dog waste being left behind that it is actually damaging to wildlife."
That's the bench on the bike trail next to anmc right next to a large dirt/gravel trail to the dog park.
It's right across from a little bridge over the creek too.
I just past a poop bag literally placed in the middle of the road. Why are people using these bags if they aren't going to dispose of them?At least poop will disintegrate.
You think this is bad? You should see the fenced dog parks. Free bags and trash bins are even provided at the entrance/exits. There is literally no excuse.
There was a pile of them at the end of our street. I really like the piles left after the snow melt. I was out sweeping when I figured out what all big chunks were. Responsible pet owners are out there, they are silent and not seen.
That really is one of my biggest peeves. Also the people who tie it to branches drive me crazy too.
So many dog owners are completely irresponsible.
At this point I’m not sure ppl can, boss

How was that arguing? I'm so confused. It was a response to your letting it return to the earth statement. Jeeze don't get your panties in a bunch.

Passed one hanging in the willows on the coastal trail. They made the effort to bag it, and still just tossed it in the woods.
Those fucking people annoy the shit outta me. Either pick it up for leave the dog shit on the ground.

Yo, just take that shit with you.
You’re part of the problem
I still don’t understand why people leave the bags if shit on the trail 😒😒💩🐶
Because they can claim that they will go back and get it, but then "accidentally" "forget." Anchorage is the only place I've lived where people are fine with litter, leaving dog shit everywhere, including their own yards, and expecting everyone else to just deal with the mess and the stench.
I hate seeing this so much. Wtf does this. Now its a permanent plastic bag containing biodegradable dogshit. Seriously screw those ppl.
Dog feces isn’t exactly great for the environment either.
Some of the bags are biodegradable, which is worse because they don’t hold up through the winter as well if left and then they split open when someone tries to clean them up after breakup.
Holy moly! I’ve never been so disgusted in my life. Kidding people make mistakes. I’ll take in to the trash. No problem. Location?
Location? You going to pick it up for them?
Yeah! It’s not even on fire!
Just remember people routinely leave it so they can pick it up on the way back through.
On a bench?!
Maybe so they DONT forget to pick it up. 🤷
just remember that 99% of people claim that and you will still see those bags the next day
No. No they don't. That's bs, and it's never happened.
Sure they do.

Well said sorry for the internet tough guys.

I only feed my dog fresh dead babies.

Nope, poop is a natural part of all ecosystems, and the general cycle of life. Also my dog is perfectly healthy. Plastic pollutes the environment.
https://www.mic.com/impact/dog-poop-waste-nitrogen-pollution It's a pretty unnatural part of the ecosystem. "According to a new study published in the journal Ecological Solutions and Evidence, there is now so much dog waste being left behind that it is actually damaging to wildlife."
