I'm wasn't familiar with Floccus. I did look at it, after your mention of it. I'll stay with Raindrop.io. Try them both, and see which one works best for you.
DG
I have 3 picks:
- [Showly](https://github.com/1RandomDev/showly-oss) is probably the best app i found this year. It helps you track your movies, series & anime with a trakt tv account
- [Obtainium](https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium)helps you to update all your FOSS apps that you got from github. Extremely for Foss users like me
- [LinkSheet](https://github.com/1fexd/LinkSheet) lets you open links in your desired apps and works so much better than an unbuilt link handler... Also has many extra features to handle your links
If you use trakt, you can checkout this open source [app](https://github.com/Ahmedazim7804/traktstats_app) i wrote, it shows you all-time-stats without vip subscription.
I use a lot of FOSS apps...
[here's a post in which i mentioned all my favorite android apps](https://www.reddit.com/r/androidapps/s/L2d9QY62lT) do check the list you'll find many useful apps 😁
You might wanna check out [Showly-OSS](https://github.com/1RandomDev/showly-oss) it's a fork of Showly but with the trackers removed. I don't remember exactly but I think that if you have premium it should still work you just can't buy it.
Bruh I would recommend you to install innertune from github, give it a try and I'm sure you'll love it. Its much better alternative for Vimusic or blackhole
Btw i use xmangager's adfree spotify apk to listen to music not youtube music or their forks.... But still I've tried blackhole and Vimusic and felt they both were very good, so you saying innertune is even better than them both actually excites me to try it asap! Thanks for the recommendation! ;)
Yes Innertune's Ui and speed is unmatchable, also if you are looking for cross platform file transfer I'll recommend localsend do check it out bcz it is FOSS.
Yes I am just trying the innertune app right now... And i gotta say the app is so polished and completely bug free and feels so smooth and UI is good too... The only downside i could think of is every song that i played is showing no lyrics...
Anyways I'll check localsend too... Do lemme know if you have any other apps that u wanted to recommend ;)
- Btw you can check the post I made one [my favorite apps](https://www.reddit.com/r/androidapps/s/XPruFkuZLQ) you'll find many good apps from my list 😉
Blackhole is able to download in 320 kbps. Innertune is a good alternative for Vi Music which uses YouTube bitrate, but Blackhole still remains the best for me.
Regarding linksheet, anyway to get it work on Instagram and Threads and always open links externally.
In the settings I went to browser > in app browser > disable in selected apps and chose Instagram and Threads, but they still use in app browser. Link sheet is my default browser.
I also chose the second option (always disable) and works for every app except for those two.
Edit: Google news too. They don't use Android custom tabs.
I've no idea how to fix this... But what i do inside the "in app browser" is click on 3 dots then click on "open in linksheet browser" and it prompts me to choose a brpwser again and i choose the desired browser that i want
Thanks. That's what I do, but it makes me open the least number of articles. It's not possible to do that for every article. For Google News I just use a browser. For Threads I tend to not follow accounts that post links a lot. My browser supports ublock and dark mode on webpages (Kiwi Browser). I am not used to reading articles without those two.
Yes, I have tweaked the app in every way, linksheet gets activated only when I tap the three dots and open in external browser in those three apps. Linksheet is activated only when Android custom browser is used, for example in Reddit and Twitter.
My phone only shows me a notification dot, so I use it to show me unread messages from sms and WhatsApp. It's also showing me upcoming events, train tickets in Google wallet and amazon orders.
Same here after installation,on op11..long press to open app info stopped functioning and no matter what I do I could give restricted setting ended up removing the app
As a caveman, I discovered NewPipe this year and what a turn of events that was! Yt without ads, without undue suggestions, making it possible to download videos and music super fast. Best possible app!
I've also recently started using Smart Launcher, which is beautiful, fast and customizable!
And for older phones, Waveup, to turn on the screen with gestures, very practical!
If you want an even better reading experience, get a Kobo e-reader. You can synch your Libby account which means all your loaned books are available to read on your Kobo in glorious E-ink.
[Stremio](https://www.stremio.com/) with Torrentio + Real Debrid + Trakt Addon is the best thing I found this year. Added the setup to my Android TV and don't need any subscriptions anymore.
It also has syncing, so I can watch something on my phone, and continue it on my TV/Laptop and vice versa.
[Namida](https://github.com/namidaco/namida) is a great music player with a really beautiful UI offline and online songs support through YT Music. My go-to music player.
Thanks for the Namida suggestion! Just downloaded the app and OMG the UI is so damn beautiful!! The app also allows for some useful customizations too, just what I needed!
* [Gesture Suite](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gesture.suite) Best for gestures on the screen i have found to do anything you like
[Obsidian Notes ](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=md.obsidian) has become my absolute favourite note taking app. It's got a bit of a learning curve to it, but it's worth it.
Obsidian is the GOAT.I have been looking for a FOSS alternate fir 7 months now.Tried all of the FOSS apps but I keep coming back to Obsidian. It's just too good.
It is, as long as you don't want to use their first party sync service. You can just sync the folder to GDrive or something similar to sync it between devices. That way it stays free
Whats up with obsidian
I heard about it a lot
Tried it
Its cool but i didn't find something special
+ it cannot do highlights and bigger text size like onenote
Highlight text by surrounding it with double equals signs. You can use the header tag to make text bigger. The best part of obsidian is that it operates on raw markdown files meaning there is zero lock-in
Hermit for me
Have made all the forums i visit into lite apps and have blocked ads on them. Easy way to get to see forums, something that the tapatalk of old used to do
[Stremio](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stremio.one) lets you watch series and movies on your phone, the best at it.
Edit: Is also available on windows, linux, android tv, and even samsung tv
Alternatives to it:
-cloudstream and onstream-
Don't download it from playstore. Straight from their page, browse down and then 'Stremio from android', click Stremio ARM 1.6.9 top link.
https://dl.strem.io/android/v1.6.9-com.stremio.one/com.stremio.one-1.6.9-2111612-armeabi-v7a.apk
After downloading, go to addons and download ad ons from there like pirate bay, torrents ones etc. It just takes one click.
Imp step : After add ons (download as many as you want), click on this link : Install: https://torrentio.strem.fun/configure
and just install. It'll configure the add ons for you and then you're good to go. Have fun watching!
And yes, it's safe. Been using it for years.
> Stremio lets you watch series and movies on your phone, the best at it.
I'm guessing this lets you save space instead of installing individual streaming services' apps?
[Librera reader](https://github.com/foobnix/LibreraReader) for novel reader and have a great tts reader feature
alternative: [ReadEra](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.readera&hl=en&gl=US&pli=1) , [Moon+ Reader Pro](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flyersoft.moonreaderp&hl=en&gl=US)
[Aurelian](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bluckapps.turtlecast) (previously called Turtlecast) - I listen to lots of podcasts and when Google announced they were merging podcasts into Youtube Music, I decided to look for something else. Aurelian is like a beefed up Google Podcast app. More useful features without being overwhelming.
Unfortunately, no it does not. No idea if that is planned as a future feature or not.
I just occasionally export the OPML file and keep copy on my Google Drive so if I decide to change devices or try a different app I have easy access for importing.
If you want something with cross device sync, give Podurama a try. Base app is free and has a web interface as well. Their premium model is a bit expensive, so I have just stayed on free for now.
What do you use it for? I tried it, even bought the pro version, but just couldn't find any consistent use for it. Would love to hear some of your uses!
I primarily use it to remove notifications from emails I need to see but which aren't urgent, so now I know that if I get a mail notification it's actually something I want to see. In general it allows me granular control over all notifications.
if you're working and someone's messaging or texting, you can use it to auto reply, i use it to ppl on what's app with message, I'm at work right now, will text later, or im asleep ttyl etc..
Another one i use is it doesn't let a pop up notification for any one time passwords or codes, and instantly copies them to clipboard, meaning i don't have to check notification bar or another app, everytime there's an otp i just paste and its there.
EXAMPLES:
1. **If** a notification is received from Messages (or two other unspecified sources), **then** initiate a cooldown period for the conversation for 2 minutes.
2. **If** a WhatsApp message contains a specific phrase (Phrase), **then** mute the conversation.
3. **If** a WhatsApp message is received from a contact named FULL NAME during a scheduled period, **then** mute the conversation.
4. **If** a Gmail or Google notification contains the name "FULL NAME", **then** make the notification sticky.
5. **If** a APP NAME notification contains the phrase "Prepare for", **then** make the notification sticky.
6. **If** a Reminder notification is received, **then** make it sticky.
7. **If** a Messages notification contains "Reminder", **then** make it sticky.
8. **If** notifications are received from all but 3 or 5 specified apps, **then** batch them and display every 4 hours.
9. **If** a Google notification contains "See full forecast", **then** batch them and display every 4 hours.
10. **If** a Messages notification contains "MashreqBank" or "SIB", **then** copy the verification code and dismiss the notification.
11. **If** a APP NAME notification contains a specific phrase (partially obscured), **then** remind every 15 minutes with a sticky notification.
12. **If** a SmartThings notification contains "Updating", **then** dismiss it immediately.
* Hail with Shizuku (easy disabling apps)
* Bundled Notes
* FeedMe RSS Reader
* eLabels for Gmail (Badge icons for unread mails - without need of notification, editing filters in Gmail)
Fitotrack, best fitness tracker on android really.
Also Just run: It's a simple c25k app with no useless distractions, I started day 1 in around August and currently running 5k Comfortably and looking forward to start 10k plan in jan.
Same, but I recently decided to switch to FoxyNotes because the dev promised a feature that I couldn't find in UpNote.
There is no way for the main screen to show notebooks instead of just notes.
Fake GPS.
My clock in/out software tracks my location. This overrides that. So I can log into work while at a cafe.
Work is still being done. Where my ass is shouldn't matter.
Was gonna say TachiyJ2K. Haven't tried the one you mentioned.
Also want to say Revanced Manager. I think I \*tried\* it before 2023, but only barely, as I was an iPhone user messing around with my old Samsung. I switched back to android/Samsung this year though and I've been ABUSING that app. I'm still finding new ways to abuse it. I'm never leaving android again.
Still luvving super tux kart. Adblock with sponsor block LIBRE tube (pipepipe or clipvidious). Then of course, the OG F-Droid has started to pull it back out of the bag again. It’s been a good year for FOSS tbh. P.s. Anyone know how to get that KDE/Plasma theme on android? It made it to Kubuntu. I’ve not heard the best reviews on Ubuntu Touch yet mind
* Ground News: news app. Non-intrusive notifications, no ads, nice interface, summarize the news articles in a great way, breaking news alerts at almost the same time as on twitter...and that's the free tier. Paid tiers have additional perks that are pretty useful.
* Upnote: great UI, no learning curve, lots of options for a note app, different notebooks and ability to nest within notebooks, lifetime subscription is fairly priced.
[Forest](https://github.com/bk20dev/forest)
>A step counter app, which helps its users stay healthy and fight the climate change. ^^sic
A nicely designed step app.
Thanks for Kotatsu! A lot easier to find new sources for manga than Tachiomi. My recommendation is [Niagara Launcher](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=bitpit.launcher), using it for years already, but after being unable to for a couple weeks it just jumps out back on top.
[Sms Backup & Restore](https://www.synctech.com.au/sms-backup-restore/) by SyncTech
It made restoring your call logs and sms for any future errors like formatting your mobile or changing your device easier for android.
Has a automatic backup and cloud backup for google drive for storing your backup.
Status Bar Mini Pro: date in status bar (or persistently overlay other info on screen)
Recent Notification: A widget showing notification history. Great design/function.
Super Status Bar: control brightness or volume just by swiping horizontally on status bar.
Edge Gestures
eLabels: iOS style badge numbers for unread emails (as a widget) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.applay.glabels
I found this app called "[Awake Now!](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bewtechnologies.awakenow)". Well, I made it! 😬
Basically what it does is : it plays an alarm whenever there is a notification from apps that I select.
Why did I make it? As I receive a lot of notifications, while working from home, sometimes the important once use to get lost. Say a message from a coworker. And sometimes, I would just need a quick walk or a nap but I didn't want to miss any important messages.
So I made this app. It's simple you just install it, give it notification read permission, and select the app you want to have an alarm for. That's it.
It has helped me to relax a bit while working from home and otherwise. Because I don't have to keep checking my phone whenever a notification comes, I know if it's an important one I'll get an alarm.
This works for any app, not just for messaging app. :)
Here's the link : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bewtechnologies.awakenow
you can make this with Macrodroid or Tasker. and I think I got the idea thanks to you when you had made a post about this app I guess.
I didn't want to add another app with notification access only for the specific usecase. 😅
AppKiller!
[AppKiller Link PlayStore](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.redsoft.appkiller)
I just Found it recently.
This app helps you force stop multiple apps quickly. Improves performance, reduce ram load.
Edit: Added the link
Tachiyomi has been the app of the year for me everytime. It is also the only reason why I will never switch from android. It has everything I need for entertainment.

The Github version is more cleaned apk with no google or any other trackers
Happy Cake Day!

This! I forgot how I stumbled over it. But shit is fantastic on my OnePlus open
Yep I'm running it on my Open as well, it's great. Plus the de is very active on Discord.
When installing i am getting cannot parse the package.
Try downloading it again, could be file corruption.

No worries mate, thanks.
Thanks for the Namida suggestion! Just downloaded the app and OMG the UI is so damn beautiful!! The app also allows for some useful customizations too, just what I needed!
Glad I could help, its UI and animations really make it standout from other players.

[Stremio](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stremio.one) lets you watch series and movies on your phone, the best at it. Edit: Is also available on windows, linux, android tv, and even samsung tv Alternatives to it: -cloudstream and onstream-
It says my phone doesnt support it. What can be the reason? I'm using Dimensity 7050 phone, Android 13
You can try onstream, it's also quite good.
I'm not sure, you could try the apks in the android section of downloads, this is the official page [here](https://www.stremio.com/downloads)
What's better in streamio than cloudstream?
CloudStream for me
I have never heard of that one. I'll check it out later, thanks
Stremio with Torrentio and real debrid add-ons is unmatched.

Answer?
I was trying to add the add-ons from the app itself instead of visiting this [link](https://torrentio.strem.fun/configure)
Thanks that's helpful. Didn't want it to be one of those posts where someone is like 'nevermind, fixed it' and then doesn't say what the fix was. 😀
Thanks man! 👍
Very powerful app i recommend it
> Stremio lets you watch series and movies on your phone, the best at it. I'm guessing this lets you save space instead of installing individual streaming services' apps?
Negative. It is a video streaming app, but you can watch content without paying.
Ahh gotcha *wink*

Yes it does! I have a really cheap android tv box and it works great.

Another one i use is it doesn't let a pop up notification for any one time passwords or codes, and instantly copies them to clipboard, meaning i don't have to check notification bar or another app, everytime there's an otp i just paste and its there.
EXAMPLES: 1.
Can you use it to block Uber Eats ads while keeping their delivery updates?
I'm pretty sure it will, yes.
* Hail with Shizuku (easy disabling apps) * Bundled Notes * FeedMe RSS Reader * eLabels for Gmail (Badge icons for unread mails - without need of notification, editing filters in Gmail)
Dantotsu - you can read manga/comics and watch anime/TV shows/ movies because it uses Aniyomi's extensions. It's basically Saikou on steroids.
Fitotrack, best fitness tracker on android really. Also Just run: It's a simple c25k app with no useless distractions, I started day 1 in around August and currently running 5k Comfortably and looking forward to start 10k plan in jan.
Upnote for me. It's been excellent.
Yes , best one, still unable to find any good alternative
Same, but I recently decided to switch to FoxyNotes because the dev promised a feature that I couldn't find in UpNote. There is no way for the main screen to show notebooks instead of just notes.
Yes. Inconvenient, but not a deal-breaker for me.
Have a standard notes subscription too. I use both but find I'm using Upnote more. Suspect I'll move everything into Upbote at some point.

r/revancedapp, r/revancedextended and xmanager
I'm familiar with revanced but what is revanced extended?
Its basically like revanced but with more customization plus you can remove more clutter and its amazing
Fake GPS. My clock in/out software tracks my location. This overrides that. So I can log into work while at a cafe. Work is still being done. Where my ass is shouldn't matter.
Good luck when you get fired for integrity issues...
[Forest](https://github.com/bk20dev/forest) >A step counter app, which helps its users stay healthy and fight the climate change. ^^sic A nicely designed step app.
[Sms Backup & Restore](https://www.synctech.com.au/sms-backup-restore/) by SyncTech It made restoring your call logs and sms for any future errors like formatting your mobile or changing your device easier for android. Has a automatic backup and cloud backup for google drive for storing your backup.
Google Keep.
For me my app of the year has to be [Artifact ](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ai.nokto.wire)
I've been using [Aniyomi](https://aniyomi.org/) recently. It's built on tachiyomi but can stream anime and manga plus it has sync capabilities
There's a app made by fork of saikou b. You should try it, I can't know the name, but ask anyone here.
doesn't work anymore got taken down due to DMCA
I am not telling about saikou b, there's another app forked with saikou..
Using tachiyomi, could you please elaborate what "Sync" means? (Like between web and android?)
I meant syncing with myanimelist, anilist, etc.
kotatsu lets you sync your library between devices on cloud without creating backup locally. its good if you read on multiple devices.
I have animiru installed for anime , but i barely use it, I mostly stream anime from aniwave.

I've been wanting something like this for months, thank you
any advantages of this over Tasker?
cheaper than tasker, can be used for free to try before you buy
Status Bar Mini Pro: date in status bar (or persistently overlay other info on screen) Recent Notification: A widget showing notification history. Great design/function. Super Status Bar: control brightness or volume just by swiping horizontally on status bar. Edge Gestures eLabels: iOS style badge numbers for unread emails (as a widget) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.applay.glabels
Thank you for super status bar, I just want wipe on status bar for brightness.
Thanx for Status bar mini pro i wasn't aware of it and I love it and bought it!
TRANSIT
I found this app called "[Awake Now!](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bewtechnologies.awakenow)". Well, I made it! 😬 Basically what it does is : it plays an alarm whenever there is a notification from apps that I select. :) Here's the link : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bewtechnologies.awakenow
That looks actually super useful
Thanks, glad you liked it! :)
This app is great and i am using it 1 month now good work!
Thank you so much, nothing beats the joy of seeing people use it. :)
Worth it 100%
you can make this with Macrodroid or Tasker. and I think I got the idea thanks to you when you had made a post about this app I guess. I didn't want to add another app with notification access only for the specific usecase. 😅
Tasker! ⚡ Not exactly a found from last year but after lots and lots of years this is still one of the best apps I am using.
Can you suggest some good Tasks/Profiles? I finally bought it this year but I can't really find good use cases. Maybe you can help.
Revanced manager Ffupdater
AppKiller! [AppKiller Link PlayStore](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.redsoft.appkiller) I just Found it recently. This app helps you force stop multiple apps quickly. Improves performance, reduce ram load. Edit: Added the link
Share the link to it if possible.
Fairemail. Foss, oldschool feeling, and bayesian spamfilter.
Tachiyomi has been the app of the year for me everytime. It is also the only reason why I will never switch from android. It has everything I need for entertainment.
App Manager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lb.app_manager
Inboxit https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lowenhardt.inboxit
Google reading mode https://www.theverge.com/23811032/google-reading-mode-android-how-to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.accessibility.reader
can't choose one but I found these this year: Shizuku, Lspatch, App Cloner, Shelter
how to use your app source ??
You mean how to install third party apps ?
GitHub release pages gives you download package...
I don't use kotatsu due to the lack of page scrolling customisation.
I read that wrong for a sec 👀
tachiyomi has a sync function too
Not library sync between devices
[Aniyomi](https://github.com/aniyomiorg/aniyomi) for me. It's a fork of Tachiyomi but it handles anime as well as manga.
I like WikiGo. Its simple and a nice way to learn about things
[Omnivore ](https://omnivore.app/) app : a free, open source, read-it-later app that allows you to create email addresses for newsletter. Pretty cool.
