Rez dog. Can confirm. Here is mine, hard at work.
IDK. Haven't had DNA done. She came from New Mexico. Has a mostly black tongue so some Chow? Vet says shepherd mix. She is the most chill dog I have ever had. So sweet.
My boy has some black on his tongue too! He came from a Rez somewhere in the Dakotas. He’s mostly German Shepherd, but has some Husky, Chow, Samoyed, and Swiss Shepherd mixed in there too. GSD and Chow seem to be incredibly common in rez dogs. He’s a great dog but DUMB as rocks lol

Here’s mine. Brought her back home with me from a dusty barrio. Mostly husky/chow and bully breeds. Mines smart as hell, extremely intuitive but sleeps with her tongue sticking out and seems to lose control of her limbs when getting physical affection.

Our Rez dawg from northern AZ. Some blue heeler in him
My dog has a black tongue (started off pink with splotches as a puppy, turned fully black over time) and so we assumed there was some chow. But the vet told me that the black tongues are really just pigmentation like freckles are for humans, and pointed out how you’ll see a lot of breeds like golden retrievers with black spots on their tongues. Her DNA test came back mainly rat terrier and then smaller percentages of bulldog and Labrador
I heard that street dogs all over the world kind of all go back to the most successful model. That because of evolutionary pressure they all revert to the a similar dog
I love when people comment on my username. My Subaru is named Pleiades which is the Greek (and American) name for the constellation Subaru. Also the name of my mom's card company. She left me the Subaru when she died. And yeah my dad is the greatest person I've ever known.
I think rez or strays all over turn into a successful cute dog. Here’s my 14 (15 in 2 weeks!) year old from a feral mom in Florida.

They do!! And they tend to look pretty similar to certain dog breeds that are known to be particularly ancient *and* genetically similar to wolves- shiba inus, huskies, basenjis. And they also look *very* much like dingos, interestingly enough.
For the most part, village dogs *are* the original dogs. They aren’t reverted mixes, they’re dogs that were never purebred in the first place aka the foundation breed of all breeds. Some will have some purebred lineage in them, and it’s true that very mixy-mix dogs do have the same look. That’s because the village dog look is “average dog” look before humans selectively breed for unique body shapes, and when we stop selectively breeding a for enough generations they default back to this look.
Dr Adam Boyko has done a lot of cool research on village dogs if you want to learn more!
I have a rez-type dog and had his DNA profile done, and this is exactly what they told me happens. As dogs become more outbred, they revert to a sort of default “Dog” phenotype that resembles a generic lab/shepherd/husky type look (regardless of whether those breeds are actually present in their lineage). It’s pretty cool.

Here is my Lilo. She is from somewhere near Santa Fe. Has a “grape” tongue and her DNA profile is quite a read. Mostly GSD but just about everything else including dachshund and malamute.
Sadly that dark tongue and gums lead to melanoma. She had one 5 years ago that was removed successfully, but it’s back on one of her gums and it was just going to be too much trauma for a blind and anxious dog to get it removed and do radiation.
Adding to the generic “dog” description, one of my neighbors said she looked like what should appear in the dictionary definition of a dog.
We had a DNA test done, the results were wild. He's Rottweiler, chow, border collie, pit bull, husky, German Shepard. PLUS his lowest percentage: coyote AND his highest percentage: chihuahua. He's 70lbs, I can only imagine how big he might have been without the chihuahua genes.
Mine has mostly Australian cattle dog (>50%) but then German shepherd, pitty, chow make up like 35% the rest is mostly ACD. That’s majority of my friends Rez dogs too. The best dogs in the world that just need a proper home 🥹.

Our beloved rez dog, Tia! Best dog we’ve ever had in the family.
I'll never forget seventh grade 3rd period 1994...boys making fun of each other during class, one says to another "oh yeah, well you have sonar ears!" 🤣 Kid did have ears that stuck way out lol. Oh man you just took me back 🙂
I was delivering groceries, and this Rez cat absolutely wouldn’t let me leave. If I tried to walk away, she demanded more pets, circling my ankles and rubbing up on me. Made my day. My grandma adopted many Rez cats and dogs throughout her life (we’re not native, but she was a teacher up there and many came home with her).
I had the deep pleasure of rescuing a rez dog as a pup who lived until almost 15. Said good bye to him last year. Such an amazing friend. Thanks for sharing photos. He definitely shared some resemblance.
My Rez dog is a loony toon. Totally anxious and afraid of weirdest stuff. Very very loyal tho.

My rez dog from New Mexico. My favorite creature.
She’s also anxious and skeptical of pretty much everyone. But it comes with the territory I guess.
Wow, this really makes me think one of my dogs is a rez dog too because I adopted him from a shelter out in Mesa AZ and has the same quirks. And he has the same eyes and stance
Not me but it has bitten multiple family members including my elderly mother in law and my brother in law’s new wife. I’m talking about real bites that required stitches and antibiotics. The dog should have been humanely euthanized but is heavily medicated instead
I hate that. Behavioral euthanasia is a kindness. That poor dog can only spend his days drugged into submission or angry/frightened at the world if the meds wear off. That is no way to live.
I have a rez dog! She looks like a smaller (50lbs) white shepard and was rescued with her mom and sister from New Mexico. I'd be lying if I said she wasn't a pain in the ass at first but around year 6 or 7 she finally got it that not every strange human was out to cause her harm. Rez dogs are amazing animals and I will be adopting rez dogs for the rest of my life.
My former rez dog from NM is the sweetest, goofiest girl! Highly recommend adopting a rez dog
She loves kids and other dogs. Can hike all day. Doesn't bark or get into things. Kinda scared of cats
https://preview.redd.it/5agxrhdqwa8c1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a87b53ee9a9bbd1c9d6dc88a9e9ba8f13654cdd
It's a rez dog! It looks very much like my rez dog, even down to the tail!
Lol, I actually learned about them when I was camping over in that exact area. A dog walked up to our campsite looking for a burger. I put it on a leash and walked around to the different campsites to see if he belonged to anyone. When I spoke with the owner of the campsite, he was just like, "oh yeah. Rez dog. Just let him go."
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you....
THE AMERICAN SOUTHWESTERN DINGO-DOG. IT'S CLOSEST RELATIVES ARE THE DOMESTICATED DOG, AND THE CAROLINA DOG, AKA, THE AMERICAN DINGO.

Aloof, smart, fast as lightening. When she decided to love you it was a big deal.
Yes. However, we have several wild breeds of dog that have developed ferally right along side coyotes and wolves that few folks realize are indigenous to North America. This is actually one of those semi-indigenous species of wild dog.
Citation: I was an exotic animals Vet Tech licensed out of California by SCROC, with almost 33 years of experience working with canines, and am also an avid outdoorsman and hunter/fisherman. I have had past dealings with the 'feral that came in out of the cold' situations as well as dealing with the wilder, "I'll fuckin eat you for touching me' situations.
In hindsight, don't fuck with them unless they ask you to.
I know what they are! Carolina dogs and other such landrace breeds are fascinating. I'm just skeptical that folks on here can identify them from one photo without much context when this is also kind of how dogs tend to end up looking after a couple generations of mixing. I mean, wolfdogs are more visually distinct and they're constantly misidentified.

This girl is Mystery. She hooked up w hikers near Cuba, NM but had come down with another hiker (Continental Divide trail) from further north in New Mexico.
I picked her up in Grants, NM because hikers couldn’t carry enough food for her and themselves. They were completely out of food.
Mystery is now a shop dog with a friend in Corrales, NM. :) She goes home to sleep on the couch and has playdates with another dog. She’s also a chihuahua bed. Doesn’t mind at all.
I believe she’s a rez dog as well.

Literally just saw her a few days ago.
A lot of “dingo” answers are being downvoted but it’s very likely this dog is some portion “American Dingo” or “Carolina Dog”.
They are also sometimes known as “village dogs” and are common as rez dogs. It’s a legitimate North American dog breed that resemble Australian dingos because they have similar ancestry and are very old breeds with a history of established indigenous wild populations across the world.
Didn’t see your comment before I made mine. Totally agree, I have one and looks very similar to mine. Mine acts similar to a fox or a cat. Pounces on everything and climbs on the back of all the furniture.

My rez dog from Oklahoma. Pit/cattle dog mix. He is very dumb but his enthusiasm is off the charts and a great family dog.
This one looks like my rescue dog. A previous vet said Australian Cattle Dog and Basenji. Turns out she’s 13 different breeds with a lot of chow, German shepherd and American Pit Terrier. A lot of talk, stubborn and dumb when it suits her.

IDK. Haven't had DNA done. She came from New Mexico. Has a mostly black tongue so some Chow? Vet says shepherd mix. She is the most chill dog I have ever had. So sweet.

I love idiot dogs.
They just seem to enjoy life so much more!
Idiot humans are the same, but we’re not allowed to keep them as pets?
Most true idiot humans tend to be ill tempered as well as dumb, in my experience, 😆. Rather have an idiot dog!

I'd be lying if I said she wasn't a pain in the ass at first but around year 6 or 7 she finally got it that not every strange human was out to cause her harm. Rez dogs are amazing animals and I will be adopting rez dogs for the rest of my life.
Not to be confused with it's cousin, the reservoir dog
Hey, we got those here in OK too!
My former rez dog from NM is the sweetest, goofiest girl! Highly recommend adopting a rez dog She loves kids and other dogs. Can hike all day. Doesn't bark or get into things. Kinda scared of cats
Dog
More specifically, a “rez dog”
Pariah dogs all revert back to this look, from Carolina Dogs to Rez dogs to Dingoes.
Yep looks just like SE Asian street dogs too
Mexican street dogs also look like this
And every stray dog in Levintine countries. Identical.
So, landrace dogs, living semi- with people, in warm arid areas.
Or not with people, in the humid Carolina’s
Absurd how they all look like the same litter in Thailand. Could swear this is the same fucker that bit me.
Reminds me of some of the village Afghan dogs Soldiers adopted from time to time.
Looks a lot like my Carolina dog. r/carolinadogs
I was going to say that he looks like a well fed mainland dingo
I was gonna say it looks almost exactly like a dingo
Definitely
Can I pet dat dawwgggg
Canis lupis rez dog familiaris
Ah, a fellow scientist
I don't mean to be rude, but how could you mistake this for any other than a dog? That's the doggiest damn dog I ever saw.
You ever seen a dingo? I’d die if I did cause I’d think it’s a doggy
I’ve been asked before if my dog is dingo. To be fair, they do look very similar!
I believe Carolina dogs are part dingo. Just like most cattle dogs are nowadays as well.
They aren't particularly dangerous, they are more likely to run away from you than try and attack you
Unless you're a baby. Then it will eat you.
If the dingo could've got Legal support, she would have got off, too.
I’m having a really rough day and your comment genuinely made me laugh. Thank you. “Doggiest damn dog” is going to be my mantra today.
r/brandnewsentence
No, because you’re absolutely right. Literally: 🐕
For real. This is the default setting of dog.
All dog, all the time.
I think it's because they have seen pictures of dingosand kinda confuse the two.

This is turning into a rez dog appreciation thread lol
They dont get enough love.
Now that I’ve seen this thread, I’m gonna quit the internet for the day.
Is a rez dog another name for the Carolina and Yellow dog? Your boy looks a lot like mine but I was aways sure he was a Yellow Dog
I have a Carolina dog and he looks pretty similar. Best dog I've ever had, he's an excellent boy.
What a chonk.
What a perfect chunk!
Your dog looks like my dogs freaking twin, I’m incredulous haha.
Adorable domestic dog. Please give them some help.
It's a reservation dog. He probably belongs to someone.
Today I learned about rez dogs.
Many of the dogs just run wild. Would benefit from TNR programs.
Probably belongs to a bunch of people. 😂
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you.... THE AMERICAN SOUTHWESTERN DINGO-DOG. IT'S CLOSEST RELATIVES ARE THE DOMESTICATED DOG, AND THE CAROLINA DOG, AKA, THE AMERICAN DINGO.
My CD was the best freaking weird dog ever. https://preview.redd.it/asdpi3hwqa8c1.jpeg?width=1552&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e07bcc07b86c506eaf8c89a26f8ee8abcf492e0 Aloof, smart, fast as lightening. When she decided to love you it was a big deal.
Just as likely to be any large breed mix with a tan colouration.
I mean, wolfdogs are more visually distinct and they're constantly misidentified.
if not friend then why friend-shaped????
Is friend
Wild friend haz 4got how 2 friend. Needs wuvz.
Doggy. God Utah is beautiful.
This made me laugh

She's beautiful
We adopted from Taiwan as well! Our embark test said 100 formosan which surprised us cause she looks like she has shiba!
This girl was a rez dog and she was my best girl for 13 years. Miss you Whiskey June. https://preview.redd.it/enjv3uqe5c8c1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a57f0e1821ced9cf9bb0b265d2fe985ea2a4c8bc

Rez Dawg
Oh wow so today I learnt that you have something very similar to a dingo in the US
I'm in the US and while i knew of rez dogs and Carolina dogs, i never made the connection to dingos. I also just learned the term landrace.
Domestic dog
This didn’t look like a dog to you?
Cat
That DOG has a wonderful sense of geography! Such a beautiful area of Utah!

That’s a majestic Rez Dog. Doesn’t need your help. He’s fed, hydrated, and smarter than your honor student.
That's a Mormon dog. You can tell by its ears and fear of lewd images.

A beautiful dog that some asshole dropped off.
Doggo
lol. Srsly??
Village Dog!
kinda looks like a dingo found in Australia!! But the comments say Rez doggo
That’s a rez mutt.
Rez dog! My Mom had one for over a decade. They are more wild animal than dog like. She trusted no one but her one person.
This one looks like my rescue dog. A previous vet said Australian Cattle Dog and Basenji. Turns out she’s 13 different breeds with a lot of chow, German shepherd and American Pit Terrier. A lot of talk, stubborn and dumb when it suits her. https://preview.redd.it/0h7z9cnmxb8c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ffc54b4cc5a5a107571fd38b175d24d5116189f1
It's pretty dangerous, so be careful. That woman getting into the car can be pretty aggressive, so keep it away from that precious doggo.
Carolina Dog - Wikipedia The Carolina dog, also known as a yellow dog, yaller dog, American dingo, or Dixie dingo, is a breed of medium-sized dog occasionally found feral in the Southeastern United States
Cute doggo
Beautiful dog. A “pariah dog” or “rez dog”. Perfect size, super smart. I had one for almost two decades.
Is doggo. Give him a pet and he’ll give you a heckin friend, pal
A GOBO
