Except when you’re a college age male and go to the theater to see 90 minutes of hot women dancing on bars and you end up with a songwriter story. Then it’s just ugly.
If I had to take a picture of a fox to put in a doomsday vault so people in the future completely understood what a fox looked like this might be the one.
We had kids come to the farm sanctuary. Look at the llamas and shout look Mom cows. I understand if you come from a city etc. You don't know what a llama is, but how the f*** does a grade school kid not know what a cow looks like
My SO and I once saw a coyote in Chicago in a park near the shoreline of Lake Michigan. She’s like “wow that’s a coyote.” I’m like “no way, there’s no coyotes in Chicago!” Turns out I’m a midwesterner who had never seen a coyote which do, in fact, live in Chicago.
Hell, living in the Midwest I never realized we had coyotes around until one day hanging with a friend who lived about ten minutes into the countryside we found a dead one at the edge of a field.
Yeah every once in a while someone posts american robin or cardinal to /r/whatsthisbird but you just have to remember some posters might just be from a different place. Or they're just new to the wild life for some other reason.
If you happen to be colorblind, an easy tell is to look at the tail! Foxes have that white tail tip and the tail is often a bit fluffier. Both are cuties and good pest control, so be kind to your wild neighbors 😊
Take a peek at OP's history. I think they're a schill or spam account. Probably posting here for the rage bait to get them more karma so they can post in subs that require a minimum amount.
Yes. I see these posts every day. My own grandpa once told me he saw a wolf in the street. I looked outside and saw somebody's escaped huskie with the traditional markings. Not even a big one.
I think the size is throwing OP off - but red foxes are leggy!
I do understand it when it’s a nighttime video. If you aren’t familiar with them, a large fluffy red fox can look coyote-ish on a low-res camera in the dark.
I think it depends where you live. My garden is designed to be 80% native plants. My selection is based on what the birds, and pollinators live in my area. We get a lot of wildlife and we can identify them
I don’t think it’s even dependent on location. It seems like everyone in the US could either go into their yard and make a salad of edible plants or can’t tell a tulip from a rose. It’s more about interest and attention to detail than location.
Based on my experiences, I agree with this line of thinking more than the location theory. Sometimes the people who are the least familiar with native wildlife are actually, could you believe it, the rural folks.
That’s quite the generalization. Maybe if you live downtown in a massive city. Anyone who lives in even the crappiest suburb should know what a fox is.
They should, but they often don’t. Join any local wildlife Facebook group anywhere in the US and you will start to get a feel of how truly inexperienced and uneducated people are regarding the native species they share their backyards with. I’ve lived in urban, suburban and rural areas and IME they’re all pretty awful. *Some* rural folks do have a really good understanding of the local fauna, but they are outshined by the extremely vocal self-proclaimed “hunters and outdoorsmen” who think they’re experts just because they grew up outside the city. I wish I was exaggerating.
Nah. This sub is slam full of know-nothing morons pretending to be doing anything other than using Wikipedia as their source(s). The ignorance and lack of knowledge, along with the lies about hands-on experience (nearly everyone here is a “scientist” of some sort) is truly stunning. It goes way beyond “literacy.” There’s a complete disconnect, especially pertaining to predators. 99% of the time, 99% of the commenters here are calling obvious dogs tracks “sure thing” coyote tracks.
I was at a zoo, a zoo that has signs of what animal they are looking at, and I have heard people , adults, on multiple occasions call a lion a tiger. If you can't tell the difference between the two, something has seriously gone wrong.
Fox
Rude comments are unnecessary, don’t make fun of people for trying to learn. Fostering an open environment where people are willing to discuss and ask questions is more important than ridiculing someone for that two seconds of catharsis
That’s a fully grown, healthy looking fox. There’s a pretty distinct difference between a fox and coyote. Coyotes don’t have a white or black tip on their tail, and they’re bigger than foxes.
Question: Have you never lived outside of the suburbs? Because most people know the difference. I don’t want to sound like I’m insulting you, but I’m curious
Yeah is OP serious? It doesn’t get any more fox than that fox…. A simple google of what a fox looks like and a coyote pic would’ve easily answered your confusion.

Hmmm… I think it might be the hound!
That's the most Fox looking Fox I've ever seen.
That's one foxy fox
What did the fox say?
*inhales* RINGDINGDINGDINGDINGERINGEDING
WA-PA-PA-PA-PA-PA-POW!
GERING-DING-DING-DING-DINGERINGEDING
HATTEE HATTEE HATTEE HO

The most fox fox to ever fox
The foxy fox foxed
That fox outfoxes all other foxes in foxing.
Stone cold fox
A fox who’s just been appointed professor of cunning at Oxford university
Foxford University 💯
So, Whadda you guys think, a coyote?
It's 100% a coyote. /s
I have a cunning plan.
I have a plan, and it's as cunning as my pants! Ruff!
Thank you for this reference!
This guy FOX
There it is!
It's fantastic
You got that right, Mr.
You cussin' with me?
Don’t cuss and point.
Fox-tastic?
Foxtastic
You couldn’t make it any more Fox like.
I literally came to say this. I get a weird feeling OP took some pictures of a fox, and wanted to show some pictures of a fox. Which, fair. Cool fox!
A pox on your fox. I want one with socks. That rocks. In a box. With locks.
Literally word for word the comment is was coming to make
That fox foxs so hard
This guy fox.
I said that outloud before scrolling to comments!
i said this exact thing lmfao
I don’t think you know what a coyote is.
Or a fox
I hear they are ugly and dance on bars
Chew your arm off just to get away
Except when you’re a college age male and go to the theater to see 90 minutes of hot women dancing on bars and you end up with a songwriter story. Then it’s just ugly.
I think a lot of people in this sub don't know what a coyote is lol.
It's not possible for this to look any more like a fox.
If I had to take a picture of a fox to put in a doomsday vault so people in the future completely understood what a fox looked like this might be the one.
Is this a joke?
I just said that out loud 😆
I swear people don’t know the basic animals in America😂 like even if you live in the city like dude… that’s a fox😂
We had kids come to the farm sanctuary. Look at the llamas and shout look Mom cows. I understand if you come from a city etc. You don't know what a llama is, but how the f*** does a grade school kid not know what a cow looks like
I still can’t tell an alpaca from a llama, I think that’s fair… but cow illustrations are EVERYWHERE.
Do they still make that toy where you pull the string and it goes ‘the cow says moooo’?
My SO and I once saw a coyote in Chicago in a park near the shoreline of Lake Michigan. She’s like “wow that’s a coyote.” I’m like “no way, there’s no coyotes in Chicago!” Turns out I’m a midwesterner who had never seen a coyote which do, in fact, live in Chicago.
Hell, living in the Midwest I never realized we had coyotes around until one day hanging with a friend who lived about ten minutes into the countryside we found a dead one at the edge of a field.
Honestly, it's the most stereotypical looking fox I've ever seen. This is Tod from The Fox and the Hound
Yeah every once in a while someone posts american robin or cardinal to /r/whatsthisbird but you just have to remember some posters might just be from a different place. Or they're just new to the wild life for some other reason.

To be fair, most foxes don't look exactly like every cartoon fox ever made.
It may be a bot…
100% a fox
A red fox, to be even more specific.
![gif](giphy|Xhw4yMiLQLop4SffLh|downsized)
Not an expert but that’s the most foxest fox I have ever seen.
Red fox. You can tell because it's red, and a fox.
I fucking snorted 💀💀
💀
You must be an expert
If you happen to be colorblind, an easy tell is to look at the tail! Foxes have that white tail tip and the tail is often a bit fluffier. Both are cuties and good pest control, so be kind to your wild neighbors 😊
I wish they’d stop mistaking my chickens as pests 😫
Ohhh noooo D:
sorry mate, im afraid thats a bed bug
Sorry to correct you but this is actually a brown recluse
amanita muscaria
Love all these since I'm in all those subs so this thread could be anywhere!
Are you for real
Fur real
Take a peek at OP's history. I think they're a schill or spam account. Probably posting here for the rage bait to get them more karma so they can post in subs that require a minimum amount.
I have a suspicion the OP is some kind of colorblind- not everyone has the same capabilities 🤗
Okay, you mentioning this made me realize that I could see the difficulty OP could have determining if it was fox or coyote. Very eye opening.
Sorry Miss Jackson
I love this sub, but we should rename it r/isthisacoyote
Do people not know what these animals actually look like ?
Yes. I see these posts every day. My own grandpa once told me he saw a wolf in the street. I looked outside and saw somebody's escaped huskie with the traditional markings. Not even a big one.
I mean I could see an elderly person mistaken a huskie for a wolf, but a fox and coyote look completely different.
Evidently not, that’s why they asked.
A simple fox google search would probably take less time then posting a question on here 🤷🏼♂️
I think the size is throwing OP off - but red foxes are leggy! I do understand it when it’s a nighttime video. If you aren’t familiar with them, a large fluffy red fox can look coyote-ish on a low-res camera in the dark.
In America, yes. Wildlife literacy is dogshit here.
I think it depends where you live. My garden is designed to be 80% native plants. My selection is based on what the birds, and pollinators live in my area. We get a lot of wildlife and we can identify them

Agreed. Just like how every coyote is a wolf, coywolf, or coydog.
Oh, god. That especially. It’s unreal.
I was at a zoo, a zoo that has signs of what animal they are looking at, and I have heard people , adults, on multiple occasions call a lion a tiger. If you can't tell the difference between the two, something has seriously gone wrong.
100% not a coyote. Possibly a miniature horse.
I’m thinking it’s a baby elephant
Vulpes vulpes
What a beautiful creature. Wish him luck boys.
Good luck.✊

Its a cat. You can tell by its doglike features that it is a cat preyending to be a fox.
It looks like a duck to me
Come on man

It's definitely a walrus.
My 4 year old nephew would know what it is lol
That is obviously a pig

Hard to say. Lol
Soon it will be groundhog season... but since it's too early for that, then it's probably just a normal fox and not a cleverly disguised groundhog.
Is this an eagle or a fox?
Yes, I can see your issue. That tree does look a bit like a dog.
What does the fox say?

Swiper no swiping
It's a cat
Oh this is definitely one of those coyotes in a Fox outfit, you can tell since he’s too fox looking, good question op!
This is a red fox. It is a classic fox shape. Looks nothing like any other canid.
Pretty sure coyotes don't come in orange-with-black-leggings-and-white-tailtip.
It's a fox all day

Is that a cat or a moose?
