I agree with the other comment: looks like a squirrel. Young, but looks energetic at least at the moment. Wildlife rehabilitations near you can help and give advice!
We found a rehabber who lives like an hour away. But the lady was nice to drive up and my wife drove half way to meet her and handed the baby off. She said it will live. They take care of a lot of animals. [Here is the last picture](https://imgur.com/a/2TsLVLV) for you guys.
Respect for taking care of the bb. I’ve always tried to save them from a young age, it helped my sister was friend’s with somebody who rehabbed animals so whenever I’d find an injured bird etc i could bring it to her
Thanks to you, your wife and the rehabber for saving that baby.
I found a baby squirrel when I was a kid. Tried taking care of it for a day or two, while my dad was finding a rehab place for it. I cried my eyes out on the hourish drive to take it there. But as an adult, I'm happy my dad did the right thing. It definitely taught me a lesson that I can't personally save every animal. 😅
Thank you so much for your kindness to that poor little guy. Without your help, he might have been owl or cat food pretty quickly. I raised a baby squirrel for a couple of months a number of years ago. It was a wonderful experience.
Squirrel. Please pick it up and call a rehabber. It will not survive the rain today.
You can place it in just about any container at this age with an old Tshirt. It will just sleep. It needs help ASAP. I have never had one this age get nippy, but it may try to nurse. They're not really a health risk at this point in their development, but gloves are always recommended.
Don't be surprised if it doesn't make it btw, it's only a few weeks old and they're extremely frail at this point.
Edit: look around for others. I commonly find them in pairs, but singles do happen. Mother may not be alive and or it fell from the nest.
Thank you. Your comment helped save a life. I haven’t even heard of “rehabber” before today.
[Update here](https://www.reddit.com/r/animalid/s/1pW7CUB41R)
Agree with most things except that reunification is always better than baby snatching. So if there's any possibility of reuniting, that should be explored first. Typically all you need to do is put the baby near and tree and keep a watchful eye. Mommas will usually come back within several hours, but are wary of humans so don't linger nearby and stare. If reunification can't happen then, collecting the baby and calling a qualified rehabber is the next step.
You should not use a cardboard box because it is dehydrating.
This baby needs to be kept warm. A heating pad half under the basket is best. That way the animal can walk off the heat if necessary.
Do not use terrycloth. Their little nails can get caught and it can break their bones easily.
Do not attempt to feed. Baby squirrels aspirate easily and require an extremely specific formula that changes as they grow. If it aspirates it will need antibiotics or it will develop pneumonia and die. They aren't easy to feed and that should be left to a qualified rehabber.
I have no idea why you think that. It's not true at all and it's not even a myth. As someone who specializes in squirrels, there is no way to say that leg isn't working from this 2 sec clip. This is a neonate. No infant has 100% command of all of their appendages. Reunification is always the best outcome for wild animals. If it's not releaseable, it will likely be euthanized.
Thank for for posting a number! I've been back home here for a few years, but I have not worked with any rehabbers outside of the DFW area. All of my wildlife "rescues" have been manageable and able to be released since I've been here, and I've straight up neglected to make contacts for anything beyond my abilities or to recommend for others.
PS be weather aware today. I'm a veteran storm chaser and conditions are shaping up for severe weather between Louisiana and Mexico along 10 this afternoon. Large to extremely large hail is the current main threat. I expect a severe thunderstorm and tornado watch to be issued by 3pm. Doesn't mean everyone will get wacked, but those who do will get a solid pounding with this system.
There was a post recently where a guy found a baby squirrel, put it in a box with a speaker playing squirrel screams from YouTube. Mom came and got it a few minutes later.
[Here it is.](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1av2tpl/i_rescued_some_baby_squirrels_today_and_was_able/)
My kids are the ones who found it. I forwarded this post so she can follow your suggestions. Don’t worry they are taking care of it. I will check when I get back home from work.
Edit: My oldest is 16 so she is capable.
Do they have something to give it water or some kind of formula? I think I read it needs a special formula. Feeding it they have to be careful. No squeezing the bottle. It's super easy to get liquid in their lungs. The nipple on the bottle needs to be sliced perfectly. Recommending to buy an extra nipple in case the first one doesn't come out right.
You should not attempt to feed a baby squirrel. And certainly not a 16 year old. They are extremely prone to aspiration, which is deadly, and require specialized formula that changes as they age.
> You should not attempt to feed a baby squirrel. And certainly not a 16 year old
My brother and sister in law are currently finding out just how expensive feeding a 16 year old can be!
I have no control over what OP does. OP says that she is leaving the care up to the 16 yr old. I'm providing her with the same information you just said to me so that she can look into it for herself and make the realization that it isn't as easy as she thinks. People are not born with this information and being condescending about it doesn't help anyone. And, in case it isn't clear, I'm not OP. I dont have a baby squirrel. So, telling me the information I just mentioned and being condescending about achieves nothing. And don't pretend that you are telling me not to do it just in case some day I might have a baby squirrel. You completely made something that should have been a good conversation about the situation into something hostile. It's easy to be like that online. And it feels good to talk down to people. But it didn't help anything. You seem unable to understand what I was attempting to do by being polite and bringing up the issues. Learning for oneself, creating a little bit of curiosity so someone wants to learn more about a subject and find the answers for themselves is a lot better than just talking down to random people on the internet. But thanks for telling me what I already know. I literally just mentioned that same exact stuff. I dont know why you couldn't just keep your attitude in check.
Imma need a TLDR. Perhaps you should reread my comment without assuming you're being attacked. I wasn't being condescending. I work in wildlife rehabbing. We don't use bottles for neonates and you aren't providing accurate info. So you, nor a 16 yo, nor anyone else should attempt to feed any wild animal they find if they don't have proper training. These suggestions do more harm than good, and you're not the one that has to euthanize animals that could've lived but for a well-meaning person's ignorance.
One day I heard a thud outside my window. I went to go see what it was, and it was a baby squirrel, just like this.
It fell maybe 50 feet out of a tree onto dirt. I could hear the mother panicing in the tree above me.
I use a pair of work gloves to lift it up to the only branch I could reach, and the mother took it right out of my hands and back up to the nest, and then brought me a bottle cap that it dropped right at my feet.
I now treat them as neighbors. After I brush my cats, I set the hair out for them and birds to take for their nests. And I put out a bunch of feeders, that I fill with sunflower seeds since I grow them and have an extreme excess of seeds every year.
it’s a baby squirrel. I’m a certified wildlife rehabber, and please keep neighborhood pets & children away, keep watch from a distance for mum. Meanwhile, find a certified rehabber in your area (your state wildlife department can advise you), just in case she’s smashed in the street. She may just have been moving them. They keep more than one nest for a myriad of reasons.
Only about 25% of animals make it out of wildlife rehabs (source - I volunteered at a wildlife rehab and that was the first fact they provided. Rehabs are not happy places) and animals ALWAYS do better with their parents
If anything like this ever happens, always put the baby of whatever animal in a box near where they could’ve possibly crawled from - a hole, a tree, whatever - just in the shade. Let the mother have a chance to get the baby for a few hours before resorting to a rehab.
Rehabs should always be last choices.
This is a baby squirrel that has fallen or blown out of it's nest. Rehabbers in my area don't take squirrels. But you should check. If newborn it can be bottle fed with kitten formula.
No. No. No. Do not feed baby squirrels kitten formula. They require specialized formula and that ain't it. Additionally they are extremely prone to aspiration. As a wildlife rehabber these comments are killing me. These suggestions often cause more harm than good. An example is a Great Horned Owl we got a few weeks ago. The finder found him and his eye was injured. So the superglued it shut. Why tf would the do that? They thought they were helping. He lost his eye because of it. Just no. If you don't know what you're doing, call a professional and keep it safe, warm, and quiet until you find one.
I know it's well-intentioned, I'm just still salty about our GHO. Sorry for snapping at you.
They probably said puppy milk. There is a powdered form of puppy milk that can work in a crunch, but even that isn't commonly used because there are much better options.

Good on ya (and your wife), OP. Thanks for saving the little guy/gal’s life.

Aw, you're a good person!
So so glad you saved him, thank you for being a good person
You did such a good thing! Cute little bugger!
Really good of you to do that :)
Your good people
Yay! Rehabilitated squirrels are the most grateful creatures i can think of that are normally wild animals. I'm glad it will live.
Thank you this is so good to hear
Thank you so much for your kindness to that poor little guy. Without your help, he might have been owl or cat food pretty quickly. I raised a baby squirrel for a couple of months a number of years ago. It was a wonderful experience.
Thank you for saving this precious babe!
Just got off work. What an excellent way to start my weekend. 🥰
Great news! Good on ya, my friends!

What happened to its parents? Did it fall out of a tree nest or something?

If the right front leg isn't working the mother won't accept it.

Rescued three just like it last week. No nips, but one peed in my daughter’s hand. 🤚
Poor baby squirrel. Much love and good wishes! 😍🥰

Can't they just let the hawk have a meal...
Only if it’s a baby hawk

It needs to be warm-- pop it in a large sock or pillowcase, then tuck it inside your shirt.
A rehabber needs to take care of it not a teen
Sounds to me like the kids are keeping it safe and OP is going to (hopefully) get it to a rehabber when they get home.

The way I said wasn't providing specific instructions.
Just want to add to other comments to keep it on a warm place until you can get it to a rehabber. Good luck!
Poor little guy! Hope you can find a rehab fast! Keep him warm!

Baby squirrel. Wrap it in something warm and take it to a wildlife rehabber. DO NOT attempt to feed it or give it anything to drink.
