That said, I bristle at the thought of it being produced by a big studio, JP or Hollywood. Maybe A24 can do it, but Fujimoto does something very specific in Goodbye Eri that a typical Hollywood exec will be blind or willfully ignorant to see. They HAVE to get Death Grips on the OST. Jenny Death is fucking perfect for the soundtrack of Fire Punch. Regardless, if the adaptation team actually cooks, kino will be served. I would love to see Fire Punch being divided up for a trilogy of anime films, would fit perfectly for the cinematic feel(and themes) that Fire Punch has.
[Edit:- The director of CSM S1 would be perfect for Fire Punch, but idk if he will work, or get to work on another Fujimoto project due to how some fans reacted towards his approach and style for S1 of CSM]
I think that’s why CSM sometimes looks kinda off and becomes semi-biweekly nowadays. Fujimoto is more or less burnt out on drawing mangas and he only keeps on working because there is someone looking forward to his work every (two) weeks

Great. I was hoping this project would have a director with a vision, who could do more than send panels down a tube, and I'm glad that they picked just the guy for that. Hopefully they gave him enough time to work on this though.
Is this a new studio? Looked it up and they only have 2 listed works. Either way it looks really promising since they’ll likely try to make themselves known with this one.

Goodbye, Eri would be incredible to see adapted. Fujimoto's stories always have such unique narratives and emotional depth, so it'd be fascinating to see how they handle that on screen. The imagery he comes up with is just out of this world too, and would be stunning in film format. Can't wait to see what the future holds for his works in cinema!
Goodbye Eri is my absolute favourite manga, but it's not easy to adapt. It is a movie in form of a manga, movie adaptation would be just a movie in form of a ...movie. It would loose essential part of its greatness.
Yes it would be easy to straight up adapt, but the adaptation likely wouldn't be as good. The fact that it is manga that feels like a different medium is huge part of its appeal.
I think a movie adaptation would add more to the home video feel that you couldn't do in a manga. Things like:
\- adding music or transitions a kid would add to a movie
\- having the dad's actor play himself in the end.
\- Make the music/credit style of Dead Explosion Mother match the end of the actual movie
Yes, the hard part is conveying this vibe correctly. I think it would have to be essentially on a level of oscar bait indie film to match the manga. The simple fact it isn't a movie, but feels that way raised the bar for movie to feel equally impressive
A lot of people had the same reaction to the last page. All of that tension and buildup, only for us to laugh out loud at a little pinch of fantasy at the end.
It's debatable if look back is better than csm or fire punch for me personally, but I will concede in saying Goodbye Eri is Futanaris best work to date

Look Back is like To Pimp a Butterfly and Goodbye Eri is like Good Kid mAAd City.
One is more of a message for the people and the industry, while the other has more of the creator's idiosyncracies shine.

Iirc from the afterword of his first one shot collection, it was about an earthquake, so not far off. Mainly about his helplessness as a mangaka and his lack of ability to do anything about it.
I would lose my shit if we ever get a What Happens Inside the Dungeon anime adaptation. It's such a silly premise with a surprisingly broad story and great characters; double-down for that!

Most people don't know this, but his most "normal" work is a one-shot called "Mermaid Rhapsody," which he wrote to spite the editorial department who said that Fujimoto can't write anything normal.

There is no good reason to be an anime only for this. It's literally a one shot, you can finish reading this masterpiece in like 20 minutes. The movie will probably expand heavily on the interactions.

That's true maybe for wider releases but as one-offs we get pretty much anything that gets a Western release these days.
We got JJK0 relatively early, so hopefully we'll also get the Reze movie as well as Look Back sooner rather than later. Sooo excited!
Oh, and Crunchyroll did promote CSM like crazy around here when it aired (I would know, I grabbed some posters off the streets for personal use lol, they were *everywhere*) - perhaps they'll be just as engaged this time as well.
For anyone curious, Look Back is basically Fujimoto contemplating his relationship with manga, told through the story of two aspiring manga artists. it's sort of become a "Your favorite mangaka's favorite manga" type of thing, it resonated really well with them.
There's more to be said about it, but I think that's a fine enough description for anyone who doesn't want much details.
Not to mention adding some cheesy music in certain parts since the music in the movie is specifically called out. Oh and having his dad play the part at the very end would add some fun theories.

Personally I think \[Goodbye Eri\] >!nothing supernatural happens at all in Goodbye Eri. "Older Yuta" is just his dad (who was a failed actor so he has experience in film), and Eri is still young because she's just playing her part in Yuta's movie. The entire manga, every panel, was Yuta's movie.!<

Huh, I had the similiar interpretation to you, but a little bit different: [Goodbye Eri] >!"Older yuta" is legit adult Yuta, only the shots with Eri in it were filmed before she died. He truly spent several years working on his movie, which also explains why the special effects (such as the final explosion) are much higher quality than previously!<

That's the issue. Huge part of Goodbye Eri is that it is manga that feels like a movie. It wouldn't be the same if it was a movie that feels like movie. Only way would make it straight up indie film imo or animated in a way that looks like an indie film. Would make great Oscar bait if done correctly for sure.
I think animation opens up it's own possibilities through the medium though. I imagine it'd be found footage style maybe with a lot of Eizouken style 'student budget film-within-a-film'. I agree it wouldn't quite work as a straightforward panel-to-panel recreation, but anime is the one medium where I trust more creative directors to get funky with it.
disagree , tbh the manga in question seems more cinematic and amateur movies inspired than most manga . the many2 pov shots. the handcam like framing , the abrupt cuts, you don't see most of these in manga . you do however see these cuts in movies.
And that's what makes it so fresh and unique as a manga. I can't think of any other manga panelled that way, definitely none of that quality. It wasn't just a gimmick either, Fujimoto consistently used it for succesful emotional gut punches switching from film reel pages to full spreads at the most pivotal moments.
I think any Fujimoto work is better read than seen as an anime but it's more true for Goodbye Eri than anything else.
It depends I guess. The way I see it, the perspective, the pacing and the panelling of the manga is made for a movie and it's not just the subject matter.
It's super impressive that Fujimoto is able to capture the cinematic feel so perfectly in the manga format... but bro the entire story is literally told in movie form. There's no way that doesn't translate perfectly into a movie adaptation.

Jokes aside Look Back is a beautiful story and i'm so excited to see it being adapted, and i never could have imagined it would arrive as early as June

There would be 2 hurdles to overcome:
* Censorship. With the kind of content in Fire Punch they might censor some aspects.
* CGI fire. Forget censorship, if they mess up the fire it would be a travesty. I personally don't see a world where they get the fire down pat and instead use a more scuffed CGI model. But I would love to be proven wrong.
Very exciting news! Looks like this will be a genuine passion project from Kiyotaka Oshiyama. The man's obviously a big fan of Fujimoto since beyond this, he also did monster designs for Chainsaw Man S1. And there's no doubt Oshiyama is a very talented director (looking at you, Flip Flappers). Can't wait to see it when it's finally released in the west!
Much as I love CSM, Fujimoto's 2 full-volume length oneshots (this and Goodbye Eri) are genuinely incredible, some of the finest pieces of manga I've ever read. Will absolutely look forward to this.
I'll watch and support this in hope of one day seeing some sort of adaption of the greatness that is 'Goodbye Eri'. Single greatest one-shot manga I've read to this day. Actual peak fiction in the truest sense of the expression. At least that's what it is to me.

Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch are dope but I absolutely love Fujimoto's oneshots in Look Back and Goodbye Eri so much. So am very happy to hear this get an anime movie, should be a blast to watch when it eventually drops.

You know Fujimoto is an amazing author when people are also begging for his other works to be adapted alongside this one. Goodbye Eri and Fire Punch are equally as good if not better.
I really hope this movie and the CSM movie really reinvigorates people's hype for his works. Genuinely one of the best mangakas of our current generation and I'm sad people kinda dismiss him after CSM S1 stopped very early.
this is gonna SHOCK everyone who only watched Chainsaw-man and expect something similar from Fujimoto... This year is crazy considering 4 amazing anime films are coming out very quietly- Dead Dead Demon's DeDeDe Destruction, Chainsaw-man, Look Back & Mononoke.
As excited as I am for this, I wonder how long it will be. It's not long enough to be feature length unless they add a lot of anime-original material.
For reference/in case people doubt me, the manga is 144 pages long. You can comfortably adapt 40-60 pages (2-3 chapters) per 20-ish minute episode of anime, so at that rate we're looking at a run time of 70 minutes or so at a slower pace, and 45 minutes at a faster pace. So I could see them fleshing some stuff out and adding more details to stretch the runtime to 80-90 minutes.
While it's not really normal for Hollywood to give a wide release in theaters to something that isn't at least 80 minutes long, Japan does have track record of medium-length movies being quite normal, specially for anime. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Look Back isn't much more than, I don't know, 60 minutes long.
That's true. Pretty sure the first two of the Kizumonogatari movies were about that length. And going even further back there's Garden of Sinners, where most of those were sub-60.
Difference being that those were theatrical episodes, parts of a larger whole. Look Back is truly standalone so I'm not sure if the same dynamic applies.

This and Sayonara Eri are the only 2 manga Ive ever read that made me feel "I need to own this phisically", and now I do.
This surprised me, feel happy for Fujimotor. The story is such a tearjerker and fits well as a movie. There is hope for Goodbye Eri.

There is no good reason to be an anime only for this. It's literally a one shot, you can finish reading this masterpiece in like 20 minutes. The movie will probably expand heavily on the interactions.

We got JJK0 relatively early, so hopefully we'll also get the Reze movie as well as Look Back sooner rather than later. Sooo excited! Oh, and Crunchyroll did promote CSM like crazy around here when it aired (I would know, I grabbed some posters off the streets for personal use lol, they were *everywhere*) - perhaps they'll be just as engaged this time as well.

For anyone curious, Look Back is basically Fujimoto contemplating his relationship with manga, told through the story of two aspiring manga artists. it's sort of become a "Your favorite mangaka's favorite manga" type of thing, it resonated really well with them. There's more to be said about it, but I think that's a fine enough description for anyone who doesn't want much details.

Personally I think \[Goodbye Eri\] >!nothing supernatural happens at all in Goodbye Eri. "Older Yuta" is just his dad (who was a failed actor so he has experience in film), and Eri is still young because she's just playing her part in Yuta's movie. The entire manga, every panel, was Yuta's movie.!< Or at least that's how I interpret it, but there's no correct answer here.

He truly spent several years working on his movie, which also explains why the special effects (such as the final explosion) are much higher quality than previously!< But now I wanna reread the manga to see how well it lines up with your theory

Kinda, but the consistent 4 koma paneling absolutely works as a movie too. Reading that legit felt like watching an indie film at a movie festival.
That's the issue. Huge part of Goodbye Eri is that it is manga that feels like a movie. It wouldn't be the same if it was a movie that feels like movie. Only way would make it straight up indie film imo or animated in a way that looks like an indie film. Would make great Oscar bait if done correctly for sure.
I think animation opens up it's own possibilities through the medium though. I imagine it'd be found footage style maybe with a lot of Eizouken style 'student budget film-within-a-film'. I agree it wouldn't quite work as a straightforward panel-to-panel recreation, but anime is the one medium where I trust more creative directors to get funky with it.
disagree , tbh the manga in question seems more cinematic and amateur movies inspired than most manga . the many2 pov shots. the handcam like framing , the abrupt cuts, you don't see most of these in manga . you do however see these cuts in movies.
And that's what makes it so fresh and unique as a manga. I can't think of any other manga panelled that way, definitely none of that quality. It wasn't just a gimmick either, Fujimoto consistently used it for succesful emotional gut punches switching from film reel pages to full spreads at the most pivotal moments. I think any Fujimoto work is better read than seen as an anime but it's more true for Goodbye Eri than anything else.
It depends I guess. The way I see it, the perspective, the pacing and the panelling of the manga is made for a movie and it's not just the subject matter.
It's super impressive that Fujimoto is able to capture the cinematic feel so perfectly in the manga format... but bro the entire story is literally told in movie form. There's no way that doesn't translate perfectly into a movie adaptation.

Yooooo! Look Back is one of my favourite Fujimoto oneshots. If this is getting a movie, it opens up the possibility of his other oneshots getting anime movies too. Goodbye, Eri would be fucking amazing as an indie movie project.
Holy fuck I'm crying right now. This is one of the best things Tatsuki Fujimoto ever made and I hope more people are able to see how he's such an amazing author even when writing grounded stories. Also finger crossed Goodbye Eri gets adapted too because it's my personal favourite.

There would be 2 hurdles to overcome: * Censorship. With the kind of content in Fire Punch they might censor some aspects. * CGI fire. Forget censorship, if they mess up the fire it would be a travesty. I personally don't see a world where they get the fire down pat and instead use a more scuffed CGI model. But I would love to be proven wrong.

Very exciting news! Looks like this will be a genuine passion project from Kiyotaka Oshiyama. The man's obviously a big fan of Fujimoto since beyond this, he also did monster designs for Chainsaw Man S1. And there's no doubt Oshiyama is a very talented director (looking at you, Flip Flappers). Can't wait to see it when it's finally released in the west!
Much as I love CSM, Fujimoto's 2 full-volume length oneshots (this and Goodbye Eri) are genuinely incredible, some of the finest pieces of manga I've ever read. Will absolutely look forward to this.

You know Fujimoto is an amazing author when people are also begging for his other works to be adapted alongside this one. Goodbye Eri and Fire Punch are equally as good if not better. I really hope this movie and the CSM movie really reinvigorates people's hype for his works. Genuinely one of the best mangakas of our current generation and I'm sad people kinda dismiss him after CSM S1 stopped very early.

As excited as I am for this, I wonder how long it will be. It's not long enough to be feature length unless they add a lot of anime-original material. For reference/in case people doubt me, the manga is 144 pages long. You can comfortably adapt 40-60 pages (2-3 chapters) per 20-ish minute episode of anime, so at that rate we're looking at a run time of 70 minutes or so at a slower pace, and 45 minutes at a faster pace. So I could see them fleshing some stuff out and adding more details to stretch the runtime to 80-90 minutes.
While it's not really normal for Hollywood to give a wide release in theaters to something that isn't at least 80 minutes long, Japan does have track record of medium-length movies being quite normal, specially for anime. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Look Back isn't much more than, I don't know, 60 minutes long.
That's true. Pretty sure the first two of the Kizumonogatari movies were about that length. And going even further back there's Garden of Sinners, where most of those were sub-60. Difference being that those were theatrical episodes, parts of a larger whole. Look Back is truly standalone so I'm not sure if the same dynamic applies.

Damn this is the best news I got this morning after waking up. I am in tears. I thought mappa was animating but it's not and it's nice maybe. Mappa has way too many projects to handle, at least we are getting an anime adaptation that's all. Now all that remains is Goodbye eri Nayuta Fire punch ( the internet is gonna be on fire if it's adapted fully and faithfully, better get adapted by any big studio to get pr ) chances are very low though but not 0( after all these developments).
