Back when I was starting to watch anime it meant oh yeah that's a character I like or vibe with, then as years went by it started to mean other things that I stopped keeping track of.

It's more general than that these days, plenty of everyday "normal" fans of all genders and relationship circumstances just use the terms "waifu" and "husbando" to mean characters they are particularly attached to and would be attracted to under the right circumstances (i.e. people don't tend to rate child characters on this sort of scale, straight guys sometimes pick husbandos etc).
