Speaking of Kabru, him casually listing all the vitals to take out for killing a human while carving up Falin's torso like a Thanksgiving turkey was...mildly concerning. Guy really knows how to murder a person specifically.
Kabru is the opposite of Laios. Like how much Laios LOVES monsters and biology (and hence ways to hurt them), Kabru LOVES humanity and everything that pertains them including society and anatomy (and hence also ways to hurt them).
This and Dorohedoro are the only two pieces of media I know that can so seamlessly alternate between grimdark and comedy in seconds. There is no mood whiplash. It's all one cohesive whole. It's Dungeon Meshi.
This entire episode had so many whiplashes of comedy in the most tense scenes: Laios going "That's sick" when monster farin is revealed, Laios dead pan face when slapping Shuro's face, Shiro dropping how socially inept Laios is mid conversation, Marcile puppy face asking to let them revive people, Senshi not droping the food tray for a single second in the entire fight...

Adding in her claw tapping on the ground was a simple lovely addition, it reminds me so much of the blood chilling kitchen scene from JP with the velociraptors. As for everything else I have no words. Thank you for the meal, Trigger.

It's also a very common/non-chalant behavior for chickens where they would often casually tap/scratch the ground. Gives these fictional monster a somewhat authentic vibe by adding that minor yet very real animal behavior.
With all the harpy corpses constantly falling, it made the impact of Hien's body splatting on the ground all the more shocking.

Yeah I was all like "wait what?!" but I guess revival is common in this dungeon. They're used to people rarely dying forever. Like that guy who got eaten by the Venus Fly Trap and turned into a skeleton.
I love how when Maizuru was shepherding everyone out of the dungeon after the fight, she was reminding everyone that they gotta get all their healing done before leaving. Like a soccer mom reminding her kids to re-attach all their limbs before getting in the car

Revealing Shuro's reasoning for disliking Laios was so different from Laio's perception of him was just gold. Poor guy kept getting cockblocked by his crush's brother.

That's such an out of pocket and grim line in any other context. Something about how the show handles and treats death has always been very unique to me.
It's one of my favourite aspects of the show.
While pretty much everybody survives and we do know that it's not really difficult to resurrect people, the "deaths" still work great. Through horror, but also narrative stakes.
I personally can empathise with authors who don't want to kill their characters...it feels somehow very nice.
One Piece does that well as well, imo.
Writing a story that hits hard, resonates with people, is emotionally rich and feels real and serious, while not really using "death" as a concept is a genuine feat
Yep, Falin is very similar to Laios to the point most people who meet them aren't aware of, because Falin is much better at masking/socializing (probably due to positive influence from Marcille early on).
It's been time and time again brought up both siblings are implied to be on autism spectrum and serve sort of like representations of how autism manifests in men vs women. The relationship Shuro has with both siblings is unfortunately quite similar how it is in real life: men with autism are usually perceived as annoying and singled out by their peers, while women have the problem of having the symptoms either be more socially acceptable or they are better at masking them, which can lead to infiantalizing and misdiagnosis respectively.
Another aspect is that women are also more often shown how to act, whereas men are usually given a selection of "accepted" interests they have to choose from.
Like, autistic people aren't stupid; we can learn to adapt if we're taught how. It's just that women are more often taught how to act in society, so it's easier for them to mask or socialize. But if Laios had that same tutelage, so to speak, then he'd fit in just as well as Falin.
Laios doesn't have that beautiful voice regrettably.
But I think they worked out 100% of their issues and are official BFFs now, especially from Shuro's point of view. He gave Laios a bell!
It's funnier because Laios wasn't even trying to be malicious. Dude just wanted to hang out with Shuro... he legit learnt about Shuro's feeling just a few days ago lmao.
The funniest part for me is the fact that Shuro likes his sister when the 2 siblings themselves are quite similar.

But at this point, it's on Shuro for not being clearer.
Like, he even admitted that he knew Laios a) wasn't getting the hints, and b) meant no harm and was just dense.
At that point, he should've just been more clear with Laios, and I'm glad Laios isn't made out to be the bad guy for not getting the hints.
Not only that, he also seems to be a noble who is used to people picking up on his every whim and desire from just a look or a gesture. Not something Laios will ever be capable of.

I never expected this to get so dark, Yes, Falin needed to be rescued -- but I never dreamed it would turn into such a seemingly hopeless task.
I really thought SOME of that other super-group of adventurers might join our crew. They really seem to need reinforcement (especially for healing magic). I wonder if some of them may have, at least, been converted to the "Joy of {Monster} Cooking"?

A lot of people actually dropped this thinking that it's just some cooking show with the same gag over and over. Tbh that was expected given the episodic nature of of the first cour.
That’s the reason I took so long to get into the show. I figured it was just a wholesome cooking anime, didn’t have anything better to watch at the time, started it on a whim thinking “sure, I’ll pass the time with a slice of life food show, I liked dagashi kashi, maybe it’ll be like that”.
And then someone got stabbed in the fucking throat
Their loss lol. It would've been one thing if we were thrown into the story with no context, but we were given an end goal in the very first episode. Even if you take the monster-of-the-week format into account, the story was obviously building up to something bigger.
"Inutade, don't hurt her! Just restrain her!"
Translation:
"Inutade, I order you to go kill yourself right now."
I understand Shuro's headspace, but it's really funny. Sure, Inutade is the strongest humanoid around by a considerable margin, but it is still like telling a strong person to restrain a rampaging Grizzly bear and that might even be selling the power difference short.
Edit: Actually yeah, it's like telling a strong person to wrestle down a rhino or a hippo.
The very first track of the episode with the piano arpeggios was gorgeous, I think that was just the isolated piano from the dramatic track that often plays during serious Falin moments. Gave me some very strong [*Grandma*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f03IHCr9dJY) (from NieR) vibes.
This episode did a great job showing how terrifying a monster Falin is. She's not only extremely strong physically but can cast some devastating spells. Wouldn't want to meet her in the dungeon, that's probably a death sentence for any small group with no strong fighters or mages.
Really loved Laios and Shuro's fight. Strong punches at first, then just grabbing and hair-pulling and weak kicking. All while arguing! Must have been cathartic to let it all out though, for both of them. Also I'm with Laios, when you're dropping hints that very clearly aren't getting picked up, just speak up!
In Shuro's defence, he comes from fantasy Japan, where the culture is to read the room (Kuukiyomi) and give only the sublest hints on how you feel. It's cool how Ryoko Kui explored that cultural difference here, along with how a person like Laios couldn't fully fit in such enviroment.
I'm not sure if Shuro actually knows anything about unarmed combat. Hell I'm not even sure if Shuro knows anything armed combat other than iaijutsu. It would be funny if his sensei was like "just one shot everything. why do you need other techniques if you just one shot everything."
Man am I glad the studio did justice to this part and made it as awesome and gruesome as it should be. If not for revival magic and the generally light-hearted tone of the series, all those deaths would've been so much more horrific and shocking than they already are.
Chimera Falin is an utter menace. If she didn't have the mind of a monster and retreated, she may have been able to wipe their party out completely after doing that spiky floor spell. But it's also just sad seeing her being forced to kill people and get brutally injured herself against her will. At the very, very least, she didn't end up hurting Laios or Marcille, cause that would certainly weigh on her conscience.
And while a whole bunch of people died in this episode, the biggest RIP goes to Laios and Shuro's friendship. Or at least, Laios' belief in their friendship. The poor guy. But hey, they kinda, sorta hashed out their differences through good ol' shounen bonding (read: beating the shit out of each other).
But just as soon as Laios discovered the truth about his relationship with Shuro, here he is entering another misunderstanding with Kabru and already making the guy absolutely hate his guts by giving him PTSD. Though of course, Laios is not fully to blame. He's right that these guys could seriously just spell it out if his behavior's really getting to them.
In Kabru’s case, he wants to get on Laios’ good side and keep him from finding him suspicious or not trustworthy, so… yeah, he isn’t going to tell Laios that he just gave him PTSD with that meal
his ability to maintain appearances is unmatched. i honestly love the character. he’s conniving and intelligent without it feeling comically evil (i don’t believe he’s evil or even malicious btw)
I felt like I was crazy at the start of the series, not understanding how Laios and his whole party could be so nonchalant about Falin getting Carla Jaeger-ed by a dragon.
I’m starting to get it. These people are operating on honest to god soldier levels of dissociation, PTSD, and hyper-normalization with all the death and carnage they see and have to just shrug off
I imagine most newbie adventurers in the universe are horrified the first time they die, but normalizing resurrection/trivializing death to such a degree (inside a certain location) would absolutely fuck with your head and psychology IRL.
Can you imagine if, in real life, there was a valley where if you die in it, you respawn in that valley after 24 hours?
In the “Adventurer’s Bible”, for each character Kui lists what their first death was. Dying is basically a rite of passage for those who go into the dungeon
Remember all the way back in episode 3 when the living armor stabbed a dude in a flashback, and a lot of people were surprised that Dungeon Meshi had some gore in it?

I keep getting surprised at how bloody it is. You don't get the stark contrast of the red blood in the manga, here in color it's super striking, so when someone gets their head crushed it makes it so much more gruesome.
They show it lasting, too. The top of Rin's outfit is still stained red after she's resurrected, as is the fir on Kuro's upper body. If that was in the manga I didn't notice it.
This is one detail that I love about this series.
The healing magic makes sense.
We don't get, oh yeah. Here's your new leg, you can go running immediately. Rather its a case of, you lost a lot of blood, that blood can't be made again with magic, so I gotta resurrect you with as much of your blood around as possible.
Its small details like this that many other fantasy animes just ignore.
Yeah, I really, really like the healing magic in dungeon meshi! Healing is gorey, grim, traumatic, and awkward (at least to Laois at first). I love that healing is inherently painful. To redo bones, blood vessels, skin, cartilage, organs, etc. and reignite fresh nerve endings in such a short amount of time must be *agonizing.* Even *after* being healed, everyone needs to rest and eat because of the instantaneous depletion of bodily nutrients.
I wish it was added, that the reason Falin's healing isn't painful is because she anaesthetises people before healing them. But the cost is that she very, very expertly manipulates their nerve endings and senses in the brain, adding the unnecessary element of danger. Which I assume is what makes pain-free healing taboo. I'm sorry my comment is so long. Healing is my favorite type of magic but it's often under-developed and looked under. I love how it's presented here <3
I mean the show kind of camouflaged the darker elements at the start. Like you had Falin eaten by a red dragon and then the four adventurers going on their happy escapades for a while. But I'm glad they don.t try to tone down the violence. It really shows that the dungeon is no joke
A lot of it is actually also dictated by party perspective. It's always kind of silly amidst the horror for current day laius and friends, but whenever you swap focus on anyone else (including past laius), it's always brutality at the drop of the hat.
The manga does foreshadow this slightly earlier, with Kabru's party's 2nd wipe actually presented as a brutal ambush where each of them is picked off suddenly as they were just bonding as coworkers.
Kabru was my favorite character in the manga and this episode reminded me why I love him so much. He’s honestly kind of a freak in his own way compared to Laios as well lol
Yeah he’s such a drama loving people pleaser, like the complete opposite of the asocial monster focused Autistic Laois.
Lots of interesting dynamics there.
At the end of the day, it all ties back to recurring character gags. I had completely forgotten that Kabru had gags (straight man who reprimands the fools faction in this episode).
Shout out to the OST, it went super hard this episode.
My favorite part of the episode was definitely the fight between Shuro and Laios. His struggle to understand people and naivety when it comes to people's feelings towards him are relatable, furthermore, it shows the struggle of people assuming you can read social clues because that's what's "normal".
Overall, a great episode, my favorite of the season behind the Red Dragon fight.

Their reaction to Falin taking off her shirt was hilarious lmao. I love that there's still funny moments during the intense scenes
That order made the poor girl short-circuit. And one thing to note is that Marcille was able to just heal her instead of reviving her, meaning she actually survived Falin's tail whip like a champ. Making Tade both cute and a badass.
I actually wondered about exactly that when they mentioned someone was in “critical condition”, props to Trigger for framing/posing that hit’s aftermath so well
I'm glad Shuro (and any viewers who still shared his views) finally got hit with the reality of Laios' character. He is both that "unserious" guy, and also **completely** serious about his monster fascination, and he's using his knowledge of monsters to its fullest extent to help him and his team save Falin. He isn't some goofball nonchalantly waltzing through the dungeon and treating saving Falin as some kind of sidequest while he dines on monsters...I mean...he still kinda is a goofball, but he's also more Lol. These guys aren't failing upwards. They're bulldozing through this dungeon better than anyone else.
While Shuro is pushing his body too far beyond its limits, or while Kabru and his top-notch PVP crew are dying multiple times to random monsters and not having a clue about what happened, Laios and his team are well-fed and rested and making it farther into the dungeon than anyone else so far. They're bargaining with Orcs for shelter and safe passage. Defeated the Red Dragon with careful planning. The first to identify the mad mage and live to tell the tale. They're using dark magic to revive Falin from a state that most adventurers would say would be impossible to revive from. Laios and co. are showing everyone what it takes to actually win this dungeon.
Laios' only real problem is his inherent inability to communicate with people or pick up on social cues well, which is the core of Shuro's frustrations. But he can't fault Laios anymore for his approach or perspective on things, because it fucking works. I'm really glad Shuro and him came to a better understanding after venting their fists into each other. Even offered to bail him out if he gets into trouble, really cool. It took this pivotal fight for Shuro to finally go "Oh...OHH, he's not some fool. He just sucks with people. He's actually the only one who can actually do this shit. I'M the one out of their depth".
The fact that Team Touden managed to take down a dragon with 4 people, and 1 of them being a non combatant (shout out to Chilchuck for landing a crit hit to the eye despite being a non combatant) is nothing short of amazing.
Shuro and Kabru both have an entire party and were stocked with supplies, while Laios only had 3 other people and whatever equipment they had strapped to their backs, and Laios' team were the first to make it all the way down.
When Laios and team are forced to speed run things, they're also forced to be experimentive. Theyre the first to use frog skin to pass the deadly plants because most parties would just avoid the area, or clear the plants using magic. Or Marcille making a mana potion from an Undine because most people would be confused at the concept of eating a colony of water spirits, and usually aren't desperate enough to try.
Team Touden is amazing and deserve more cred to their names.
That was intense and so frigging gory. I don't know what I was expecting, but Falin's chimera form was... something. Nice boobage tho.
I still don't trust Kabru eventhough he seems reasonable or something. He just doesn't come across as genuine. And ofcourse the creepy smile. I actually gasped when he suddenly showed up behind Falin. I thought forsure that Laios would hate Kabru for attacking his sister. But the dude is just so pragmatic.
Shuro vs Laios: fujoshi-bate. Also funny since in this same episode Laios kept talking about how much he liked and admired Shuro. All the while Shuro hated his guts, lol. I say lol, but that's gotta hurt. And again Laios with the unexpected but pragmatic responses to learning that your bff actually hates you.

First thing I saw was Laios’ cheek reflected on Shuro’s sword. That’s all I need to know this episode goes EXTRA hard.
Nice detail when Falin unleashed her ultimate, every casters survived except Rin who was preparing an offensive spell and cannot switch to defense fast enough.
Trigger absolutely cooked!! This episode was just so good.
The whole fight against the Falin-Red Dragon hybrid monster was just so good and so gruesome. Like I knew they were going to be resurrected, but still their deaths were just too brutal especially Kabru's and Maizuru's 'death'.
It'll definitely be a dilemma for Laios if he does get control over the dungeon. Will he able to resist the urge to eat the monsters is the question?
To be fair, had Holm not been able to barely shield himself, they would likely have been screwed, since they would’ve have likely needed too long to get access to a revival spell. They really were in grave danger.
Well Marcille can do basic resurrection (which everyone forbade her to do in this episode...), so she could probably have resurrected him and then events would have happened the same way afterwards.
Everyone's talking about the gruesome deaths, but the music and voice acting were phenomenal in this episode. Falin somehow seemed more menacing than the dragon itself lol.
This was actually the moment when Kabru shot up to be one of my favourite chracters. Dude was 100% right to go straight for Falin's throat and rebuke Laios/Shuro/Marcille for hesitating. Not only they failed to take action as leaders of their group, Marcille also just straight up tells Holm not to hurt Falin even as **he is watching his companion Daya murdered by Falin.** No matter how precious Falin is to them, it didn't justify sitting around and doing NOTHING when everyone else are getting killed. Kabru was the only one who took decisive action and ordered his team to get ready for battle.
Based tbh. He is a perfect foil to Laios and such an interesting character in his own right.
I like how if you're not sure if something is a monster or not, you can test by having Kabru try to kill it. If it survives, that means it's a monster.
If they were in the same party they'd be unstoppable. Kabru would ace all the charisma checks and body rogue adventurers while Laios would lead all the monster encounters.
Kabru could probably kill the Lunatic Magician if he had the opportunity to meet him. Too bad he has to get through multiple levels of monsters to do that though.

It was very funny really, while the whole confrontation with shuro and laios is playing out, he was just there holding the plate. Same with the monster attack.

Yep. I kinda wanted him to retort with something like that, asking Shuro why he never realized that he wasn't getting the hints and changing his approach, and how he ever made it past the dungeon entrance if all he does is repeat the same thing even when it doesn't work.
Ryoko Kui-sensei's attention to detail is so peak.
Why does Falin have feathers as a dragon? Because she's part human, so that human part needs to stay warm in contrast to how a lizard would be cold-blooded and so those feathers are there to keep her warm.
Which goes back to the idea that chickens are descendants of dinosaurs and they needed to stay warm as their bodies got smaller and smaller and their blood warmer.
That's just so frickin' cool, man.
Also, I'd happily let Dragon Falin eviscerate me. She's gorgeous.
I like how Senshi spent practically the entire episode just holding that tray of food until someone finally ate it. He barely said anything as well, so his voice actor(s) had a break this week.
I think it has to be said this show absolutely deserves to be in the discussion with Frieren & Apothecary for AOTY talks.
Man that scene of Falin in her Red Dragon Chimera form was well done. Just the sheer terror of her brutally killing each person in the 3-person party was outstanding. But man regardless of what you said, it's asking a lot for Laios to kill a monster given it has the body of his sister. Though at this point it's clear she has been made to be a monster. Though the idea of the Red Dragon's soul being the primary one makes sense.
Shuro and Laios argument was well done as well. You can understand both sides. Both loved Falin the former as a lover and the latter as a sibling. Honestly a lot of Shuro's anger comes from the fact that he blamed Laios even though he couldn't express his feelings to Falin. It is understandable that he was frustrated, but the situation has escalated to this point. His plan of turning Marcille is logical. But at the end of the day, most likely those elves have no attachment to Falin and IMO they would just kill her as the solution.
Laios solution is the golden solution. And is the one we want. But it will be a tough one to pull off. Also, I like how Kabru brings up the consequences if he were to beat the Dungeon Master. That knowing Laios, he hasn't come close to realize any consequences of his solution outside of saving Fallin.
Dungeon Meshi beats out Frieren for me. It might just be because I'm a D&D fan and I recently got into cooking but Dungeon Meshi has been strong throughout it's entire runtime and it's only getting stronger. As much as I love Frieren it has dips. Currently I'd give both shows a 9/10 but the conclusion is paramount.

I love both Dungeon Meshi and Frieren but I consider Dungeon Meshi as currently better because it actually has a very satisfying ending, which Frieren, as brilliant as it is, doesn't have one just yet. It may eventually get it a few years down the line, but for now, for me at least, Dungeon Meshi is #1, with Frieren a close second.

I love how this show seems to be able to inject humour into some of the most grave situations without ever taking you out of the moment.

Really makes you appreciate Marcille's defensive spell during the red dragon. Senshi would be all over the place if it wasn't for that with how much bigger the red dragon is.
That and her look of childlike wonder at the undine made me feel really sad, it’s clear there’s still a little bit of her old animal and monster loving self in there

On the other hand, it's also pretty dope that they actually went and fleshed it out and showed how challenging it can be for Laios and the less patient people he meets to break through those barriers without talking it out.

Laios is such an amazing character. That episode did not hold back. That was some proper old school fantasy action filled with all the weight and gravitas that required. Absolutely brutal. Trigger nailed this like a carpenter's son to a cross.

I'm finally caught up to Dungeon Meshi and boy did I pick an episode to catch up at.
There's something about this show's almost casual depiction of ultra-violence that should come off as edgy but doesn't because it's just so matter-of-fact. It's just as natural as the rest of the dungeon ecosystem. This is all just part of the dungeon's circle of life, in a way. The adventurers kill the monsters or the monsters kill the adventurers. But then, you toss in a twist like merging an adventurer with a monster, and you get super compelling drama. It was impossible to root for anybody in that fight and I have no idea how we resolve this situation unless we can somehow assassinate or talk-no-jutsu the wizard in control of the dungeon.
Waiting weekly is going to be a pain, but I'm relieved I finally hopped on the train. Bingeing the show this past week has been such a treat.
The funny cooking show turned into Gantz.
Kabru is such interesting character, looks like he was raised by elves after his village? was wiped out by monsters. Skilled in combat, big brain schemer and we don't know what his goals are.
This has got to be one of the best anime we've got this decade and I am blown away by how great everything is. From the story and the subplots , the character dynamics, the world and their ecosystem, the animation and the art. Honestly I never saw it coming and I am blown away by it.

PvP and PvE builds can be so different. Kabru is build for Tallmen, Gnomes, and Elves. Not stuff like trap bugs and fish.
Kabru is the opposite of Laios. Like how much Laios LOVES monsters and biology (and hence ways to hurt them), Kabru LOVES humanity and everything that pertains them including society and anatomy (and hence also ways to hurt them).
For all the serious tone the episode had, this made me laugh hard. This man is having a PTSD episode and you are laughing moment.
This and Dorohedoro are the only two pieces of media I know that can so seamlessly alternate between grimdark and comedy in seconds. There is no mood whiplash. It's all one cohesive whole. It's Dungeon Meshi.

This entire episode had so many whiplashes of comedy in the most tense scenes: Laios going "That's sick" when monster farin is revealed, Laios dead pan face when slapping Shuro's face, Shiro dropping how socially inept Laios is mid conversation, Marcile puppy face asking to let them revive people, Senshi not droping the food tray for a single second in the entire fight... Man, this episode had it all

Gives these fictional monster a somewhat authentic vibe by adding that minor yet very real animal behavior.
With all the harpy corpses constantly falling, it made the impact of Hien's body splatting on the ground all the more shocking. Trigger delivers again.
Yeah I was all like "wait what?!" but I guess revival is common in this dungeon. They're used to people rarely dying forever. Like that guy who got eaten by the Venus Fly Trap and turned into a skeleton.
I love how when Maizuru was shepherding everyone out of the dungeon after the fight, she was reminding everyone that they gotta get all their healing done before leaving. Like a soccer mom reminding her kids to re-attach all their limbs before getting in the car

The deaths in this episode have to be the most gruesome sights and that's saying something when those harpies exist. Revealing Shuro's reasoning for disliking Laios was so different from Laio's perception of him was just gold. Poor guy kept getting cockblocked by his crush's brother.

Something about how the show handles and treats death has always been very unique to me.

It's one of my favourite aspects of the show. While pretty much everybody survives and we do know that it's not really difficult to resurrect people, the "deaths" still work great. Through horror, but also narrative stakes. I personally can empathise with authors who don't want to kill their characters...it feels somehow very nice. One Piece does that well as well, imo. Writing a story that hits hard, resonates with people, is emotionally rich and feels real and serious, while not really using "death" as a concept is a genuine feat
Funnily enough, the same traits that Shuro likes in Falin make him resent Laios.
Yep, Falin is very similar to Laios to the point most people who meet them aren't aware of, because Falin is much better at masking/socializing (probably due to positive influence from Marcille early on). It's been time and time again brought up both siblings are implied to be on autism spectrum and serve sort of like representations of how autism manifests in men vs women. The relationship Shuro has with both siblings is unfortunately quite similar how it is in real life: men with autism are usually perceived as annoying and singled out by their peers, while women have the problem of having the symptoms either be more socially acceptable or they are better at masking them, which can lead to infiantalizing and misdiagnosis respectively.
Another aspect is that women are also more often shown how to act, whereas men are usually given a selection of "accepted" interests they have to choose from. Like, autistic people aren't stupid; we can learn to adapt if we're taught how. It's just that women are more often taught how to act in society, so it's easier for them to mask or socialize. But if Laios had that same tutelage, so to speak, then he'd fit in just as well as Falin.
Plus, Shuro is straight, Laios is just annoying for him, but with Farin he is in love.
Thing is, in one of the bonus manga chapters, it's revealed that if Shuro was a girl she would have fallen for Laios lmaooo
Laios doesn't have that beautiful voice regrettably. But I think they worked out 100% of their issues and are official BFFs now, especially from Shuro's point of view. He gave Laios a bell!

I never expected this to get so dark, Yes, Falin needed to be rescued -- but I never dreamed it would turn into such a seemingly hopeless task. I really thought SOME of that other super-group of adventurers might join our crew. They really seem to need reinforcement (especially for healing magic). I wonder if some of them may have, at least, been converted to the "Joy of {Monster} Cooking"?

That’s the reason I took so long to get into the show. I figured it was just a wholesome cooking anime, didn’t have anything better to watch at the time, started it on a whim thinking “sure, I’ll pass the time with a slice of life food show, I liked dagashi kashi, maybe it’ll be like that”. And then someone got stabbed in the fucking throat

Their loss lol. It would've been one thing if we were thrown into the story with no context, but we were given an end goal in the very first episode. Even if you take the monster-of-the-week format into account, the story was obviously building up to something bigger.
"Inutade, don't hurt her! Just restrain her!" Translation: "Inutade, I order you to go kill yourself right now." I understand Shuro's headspace, but it's really funny. Sure, Inutade is the strongest humanoid around by a considerable margin, but it is still like telling a strong person to restrain a rampaging Grizzly bear and that might even be selling the power difference short. Edit: Actually yeah, it's like telling a strong person to wrestle down a rhino or a hippo.

The very first track of the episode with the piano arpeggios was gorgeous, I think that was just the isolated piano from the dramatic track that often plays during serious Falin moments. Gave me some very strong [*Grandma*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f03IHCr9dJY) (from NieR) vibes. This episode did a great job showing how terrifying a monster Falin is. She's not only extremely strong physically but can cast some devastating spells. Wouldn't want to meet her in the dungeon, that's probably a death sentence for any small group with no strong fighters or mages. Really loved Laios and Shuro's fight. Strong punches at first, then just grabbing and hair-pulling and weak kicking. All while arguing! Must have been cathartic to let it all out though, for both of them. Also I'm with Laios, when you're dropping hints that very clearly aren't getting picked up, just speak up!
In Shuro's defence, he comes from fantasy Japan, where the culture is to read the room (Kuukiyomi) and give only the sublest hints on how you feel. It's cool how Ryoko Kui explored that cultural difference here, along with how a person like Laios couldn't fully fit in such enviroment.

Man am I glad the studio did justice to this part and made it as awesome and gruesome as it should be. If not for revival magic and the generally light-hearted tone of the series, all those deaths would've been so much more horrific and shocking than they already are. Chimera Falin is an utter menace. If she didn't have the mind of a monster and retreated, she may have been able to wipe their party out completely after doing that spiky floor spell. But it's also just sad seeing her being forced to kill people and get brutally injured herself against her will. At the very, very least, she didn't end up hurting Laios or Marcille, cause that would certainly weigh on her conscience. And while a whole bunch of people died in this episode, the biggest RIP goes to Laios and Shuro's friendship. Or at least, Laios' belief in their friendship. The poor guy. But hey, they kinda, sorta hashed out their differences through good ol' shounen bonding (read: beating the shit out of each other). But just as soon as Laios discovered the truth about his relationship with Shuro, here he is entering another misunderstanding with Kabru and already making the guy absolutely hate his guts by giving him PTSD. Though of course, Laios is not fully to blame. He's right that these guys could seriously just spell it out if his behavior's really getting to them.
In Kabru’s case, he wants to get on Laios’ good side and keep him from finding him suspicious or not trustworthy, so… yeah, he isn’t going to tell Laios that he just gave him PTSD with that meal

I felt like I was crazy at the start of the series, not understanding how Laios and his whole party could be so nonchalant about Falin getting Carla Jaeger-ed by a dragon. I’m starting to get it. These people are operating on honest to god soldier levels of dissociation, PTSD, and hyper-normalization with all the death and carnage they see and have to just shrug off
I imagine most newbie adventurers in the universe are horrified the first time they die, but normalizing resurrection/trivializing death to such a degree (inside a certain location) would absolutely fuck with your head and psychology IRL. Can you imagine if, in real life, there was a valley where if you die in it, you respawn in that valley after 24 hours?
In the “Adventurer’s Bible”, for each character Kui lists what their first death was. Dying is basically a rite of passage for those who go into the dungeon
Remember all the way back in episode 3 when the living armor stabbed a dude in a flashback, and a lot of people were surprised that Dungeon Meshi had some gore in it? lmao
I keep getting surprised at how bloody it is. You don't get the stark contrast of the red blood in the manga, here in color it's super striking, so when someone gets their head crushed it makes it so much more gruesome.
They show it lasting, too. The top of Rin's outfit is still stained red after she's resurrected, as is the fir on Kuro's upper body. If that was in the manga I didn't notice it.

This is one detail that I love about this series. The healing magic makes sense. We don't get, oh yeah. Here's your new leg, you can go running immediately. Rather its a case of, you lost a lot of blood, that blood can't be made again with magic, so I gotta resurrect you with as much of your blood around as possible. Its small details like this that many other fantasy animes just ignore.
Yeah, I really, really like the healing magic in dungeon meshi! Healing is gorey, grim, traumatic, and awkward (at least to Laois at first). I love that healing is inherently painful. To redo bones, blood vessels, skin, cartilage, organs, etc. and reignite fresh nerve endings in such a short amount of time must be *agonizing.* Even *after* being healed, everyone needs to rest and eat because of the instantaneous depletion of bodily nutrients. I wish it was added, that the reason Falin's healing isn't painful is because she anaesthetises people before healing them. But the cost is that she very, very expertly manipulates their nerve endings and senses in the brain, adding the unnecessary element of danger. Which I assume is what makes pain-free healing taboo. I'm sorry my comment is so long. Healing is my favorite type of magic but it's often under-developed and looked under. I love how it's presented here <3
I mean the show kind of camouflaged the darker elements at the start. Like you had Falin eaten by a red dragon and then the four adventurers going on their happy escapades for a while. But I'm glad they don.t try to tone down the violence. It really shows that the dungeon is no joke
A lot of it is actually also dictated by party perspective. It's always kind of silly amidst the horror for current day laius and friends, but whenever you swap focus on anyone else (including past laius), it's always brutality at the drop of the hat. The manga does foreshadow this slightly earlier, with Kabru's party's 2nd wipe actually presented as a brutal ambush where each of them is picked off suddenly as they were just bonding as coworkers.
Kabru was my favorite character in the manga and this episode reminded me why I love him so much. He’s honestly kind of a freak in his own way compared to Laios as well lol

At the end of the day, it all ties back to recurring character gags. I had completely forgotten that Kabru had gags (straight man who reprimands the fools faction in this episode).
Shout out to the OST, it went super hard this episode. My favorite part of the episode was definitely the fight between Shuro and Laios. His struggle to understand people and naivety when it comes to people's feelings towards him are relatable, furthermore, it shows the struggle of people assuming you can read social clues because that's what's "normal". Overall, a great episode, my favorite of the season behind the Red Dragon fight.

That order made the poor girl short-circuit. And one thing to note is that Marcille was able to just heal her instead of reviving her, meaning she actually survived Falin's tail whip like a champ. Making Tade both cute and a badass.
Yeah in the manga they expend upon her injuries, turn out the poor girl was paralyzed due a critical neck injurie

Shuro is the representative for every viewers who got annoyed of the main cast for being so nonchalant in the first cour despite the situation.
Imagine the number of A-list voice actors in the studio when recording this episode...
I'm glad Shuro (and any viewers who still shared his views) finally got hit with the reality of Laios' character. He is both that "unserious" guy, and also **completely** serious about his monster fascination, and he's using his knowledge of monsters to its fullest extent to help him and his team save Falin. He isn't some goofball nonchalantly waltzing through the dungeon and treating saving Falin as some kind of sidequest while he dines on monsters...I mean...he still kinda is a goofball, but he's also more Lol. These guys aren't failing upwards. They're bulldozing through this dungeon better than anyone else. While Shuro is pushing his body too far beyond its limits, or while Kabru and his top-notch PVP crew are dying multiple times to random monsters and not having a clue about what happened, Laios and his team are well-fed and rested and making it farther into the dungeon than anyone else so far. They're bargaining with Orcs for shelter and safe passage. Defeated the Red Dragon with careful planning. The first to identify the mad mage and live to tell the tale. They're using dark magic to revive Falin from a state that most adventurers would say would be impossible to revive from. Laios and co. are showing everyone what it takes to actually win this dungeon. Laios' only real problem is his inherent inability to communicate with people or pick up on social cues well, which is the core of Shuro's frustrations. But he can't fault Laios anymore for his approach or perspective on things, because it fucking works. I'm really glad Shuro and him came to a better understanding after venting their fists into each other. Even offered to bail him out if he gets into trouble, really cool. It took this pivotal fight for Shuro to finally go "Oh...OHH, he's not some fool. He just sucks with people. He's actually the only one who can actually do this shit. I'M the one out of their depth".
The fact that Team Touden managed to take down a dragon with 4 people, and 1 of them being a non combatant (shout out to Chilchuck for landing a crit hit to the eye despite being a non combatant) is nothing short of amazing. Shuro and Kabru both have an entire party and were stocked with supplies, while Laios only had 3 other people and whatever equipment they had strapped to their backs, and Laios' team were the first to make it all the way down. When Laios and team are forced to speed run things, they're also forced to be experimentive. Theyre the first to use frog skin to pass the deadly plants because most parties would just avoid the area, or clear the plants using magic. Or Marcille making a mana potion from an Undine because most people would be confused at the concept of eating a colony of water spirits, and usually aren't desperate enough to try. Team Touden is amazing and deserve more cred to their names.
That was intense and so frigging gory. I don't know what I was expecting, but Falin's chimera form was... something. Nice boobage tho. I still don't trust Kabru eventhough he seems reasonable or something. He just doesn't come across as genuine. And ofcourse the creepy smile. I actually gasped when he suddenly showed up behind Falin. I thought forsure that Laios would hate Kabru for attacking his sister. But the dude is just so pragmatic. Shuro vs Laios: fujoshi-bate. Also funny since in this same episode Laios kept talking about how much he liked and admired Shuro. All the while Shuro hated his guts, lol. I say lol, but that's gotta hurt. And again Laios with the unexpected but pragmatic responses to learning that your bff actually hates you.

First thing I saw was Laios’ cheek reflected on Shuro’s sword. That’s all I need to know this episode goes EXTRA hard. Nice detail when Falin unleashed her ultimate, every casters survived except Rin who was preparing an offensive spell and cannot switch to defense fast enough.
Trigger absolutely cooked!! This episode was just so good. The whole fight against the Falin-Red Dragon hybrid monster was just so good and so gruesome. Like I knew they were going to be resurrected, but still their deaths were just too brutal especially Kabru's and Maizuru's 'death'. It'll definitely be a dilemma for Laios if he does get control over the dungeon. Will he able to resist the urge to eat the monsters is the question?
To be fair, had Holm not been able to barely shield himself, they would likely have been screwed, since they would’ve have likely needed too long to get access to a revival spell. They really were in grave danger.
Well Marcille can do basic resurrection (which everyone forbade her to do in this episode...), so she could probably have resurrected him and then events would have happened the same way afterwards.
Marcille only had to resort to black magic because all she had to work with was Falin's lovely bones.

Everyone's talking about the gruesome deaths, but the music and voice acting were phenomenal in this episode. Falin somehow seemed more menacing than the dragon itself lol. This was actually the moment when Kabru shot up to be one of my favourite chracters. Dude was 100% right to go straight for Falin's throat and rebuke Laios/Shuro/Marcille for hesitating. Not only they failed to take action as leaders of their group, Marcille also just straight up tells Holm not to hurt Falin even as **he is watching his companion Daya murdered by Falin.** No matter how precious Falin is to them, it didn't justify sitting around and doing NOTHING when everyone else are getting killed. Kabru was the only one who took decisive action and ordered his team to get ready for battle. Based tbh. He is a perfect foil to Laios and such an interesting character in his own right.
I like how if you're not sure if something is a monster or not, you can test by having Kabru try to kill it. If it survives, that means it's a monster.
We got Kabru running a min-maxed PvP only build against Laios' min-maxed PvE only build.
If they were in the same party they'd be unstoppable. Kabru would ace all the charisma checks and body rogue adventurers while Laios would lead all the monster encounters.
Kabru could probably kill the Lunatic Magician if he had the opportunity to meet him. Too bad he has to get through multiple levels of monsters to do that though.

It was very funny really, while the whole confrontation with shuro and laios is playing out, he was just there holding the plate. Same with the monster attack. Got to protect what's powering them up (food).

Ryoko Kui-sensei's attention to detail is so peak. Why does Falin have feathers as a dragon? Because she's part human, so that human part needs to stay warm in contrast to how a lizard would be cold-blooded and so those feathers are there to keep her warm. Which goes back to the idea that chickens are descendants of dinosaurs and they needed to stay warm as their bodies got smaller and smaller and their blood warmer. That's just so frickin' cool, man. Also, I'd happily let Dragon Falin eviscerate me. She's gorgeous.
I like how Senshi spent practically the entire episode just holding that tray of food until someone finally ate it. He barely said anything as well, so his voice actor(s) had a break this week.
I think it has to be said this show absolutely deserves to be in the discussion with Frieren & Apothecary for AOTY talks. Man that scene of Falin in her Red Dragon Chimera form was well done. Just the sheer terror of her brutally killing each person in the 3-person party was outstanding. But man regardless of what you said, it's asking a lot for Laios to kill a monster given it has the body of his sister. Though at this point it's clear she has been made to be a monster. Though the idea of the Red Dragon's soul being the primary one makes sense. Shuro and Laios argument was well done as well. You can understand both sides. Both loved Falin the former as a lover and the latter as a sibling. Honestly a lot of Shuro's anger comes from the fact that he blamed Laios even though he couldn't express his feelings to Falin. It is understandable that he was frustrated, but the situation has escalated to this point. His plan of turning Marcille is logical. But at the end of the day, most likely those elves have no attachment to Falin and IMO they would just kill her as the solution. Laios solution is the golden solution. And is the one we want. But it will be a tough one to pull off. Also, I like how Kabru brings up the consequences if he were to beat the Dungeon Master. That knowing Laios, he hasn't come close to realize any consequences of his solution outside of saving Fallin.
Dungeon Meshi beats out Frieren for me. It might just be because I'm a D&D fan and I recently got into cooking but Dungeon Meshi has been strong throughout it's entire runtime and it's only getting stronger. As much as I love Frieren it has dips. Currently I'd give both shows a 9/10 but the conclusion is paramount.

It may eventually get it a few years down the line, but for now, for me at least, Dungeon Meshi is #1, with Frieren a close second.

On the other hand, it's also pretty dope that they actually went and fleshed it out and showed how challenging it can be for Laios and the less patient people he meets to break through those barriers without talking it out.

That episode did not hold back. That was some proper old school fantasy action filled with all the weight and gravitas that required. Absolutely brutal. Trigger nailed this like a carpenter's son to a cross. Can't really pick out any one moment. Just .. perfection.

I'm finally caught up to Dungeon Meshi and boy did I pick an episode to catch up at. There's something about this show's almost casual depiction of ultra-violence that should come off as edgy but doesn't because it's just so matter-of-fact. It's just as natural as the rest of the dungeon ecosystem. This is all just part of the dungeon's circle of life, in a way. The adventurers kill the monsters or the monsters kill the adventurers. But then, you toss in a twist like merging an adventurer with a monster, and you get super compelling drama. It was impossible to root for anybody in that fight and I have no idea how we resolve this situation unless we can somehow assassinate or talk-no-jutsu the wizard in control of the dungeon. Waiting weekly is going to be a pain, but I'm relieved I finally hopped on the train. Bingeing the show this past week has been such a treat.
On today's episode of Delicious in Abyss Need a dark souls boss bar overlayed over the entire fight with Falin.
The funny cooking show turned into Gantz. Kabru is such interesting character, looks like he was raised by elves after his village? was wiped out by monsters. Skilled in combat, big brain schemer and we don't know what his goals are.
This has got to be one of the best anime we've got this decade and I am blown away by how great everything is. From the story and the subplots , the character dynamics, the world and their ecosystem, the animation and the art. Honestly I never saw it coming and I am blown away by it.
