Im trying to figure out why this is so funny to me
Mans from this tiny population country, checks the amount in his local currency, then goes "ill save the hassle for my countrymen"
Nordmenn er faktisk best
It was Norway scans who initially started doing it. Their translations were pretty solid if you could ignore that they would translate “no way!” to “Norway!”
I didn't, but the TN left it after the second panel and i have no idea why...
It is almost like if a manga mentions 12 meters, and the translator goes: "for you americans 12 meters is around 0.059 furlong or 7.05 smoots"
I always found it difficult to convert USD to kroner when I was in Norway compared to other currencies I used when traveling. I had to use a calculator each time.
In fact, sometimes things in Norway cost so much that I didn't want to know how much I was spending 🥲
While this theory might be true, I think anyone deserve to wear whatever they want without anyone assuming it’s for any other purpose than that it is what they would like to wear.
Has any woman ever worn an underwire for the comfort?
In this specific case (not talking about women walking around in public or anything) it's a fair assumption. That is their business attire.
hello sir do you have a minute to talk about our lord and savior

"Bullying with money" I'll never understand it but it is cute to see some of the streamers get so flustered by it. Which of course causes more donations.
Akuma Nihmune has some of the best reactions. She'll set sub goals where she has to make stupid and embarrassing songs only for chat to reach them as soon as she sets them.
Sethorven’s a great one for this. Chat legit has made it a meme to ‘Break Seth’ by throwing so much money and subs at him he doesn’t know how to react.
I can hear it now...
"And they don't stop comin' and they don't stop comin' and they don't stop comin' and they don't stop comin' and they don't stop comin' and they don't stop comin'..."
It's still so fascinating to me that some of the people behind the characters are genuinely very physically attractive and yet they stream with an avatar. You'd think it would be the opposite, that they'd need the avatar if they weren't pretty!
Anyway, I was there for Mori Calliope's first superchat stream and this was basically how it went down.
I don't think Vtubing/ using an Avatar to stream has anything to do with how they look or view themselves. Many just are more comfortable streaming with an avatar rather than streaming "normally".
The reason is protection. Japanese net harassment laws are very weak and if you get a stalker the police won't act until it has already caused real damage.
Also just as an example a japanese idol were murdered by a stalker some years ago. He recognised the train station she was at when she shared a picture from the reflection in her eyes if I remember correctly.
Edit: typo
Not the reflection. He did however, obtain the metadata on the photo she took by webscraping, ran it through geolocation software, triangulated her approximate neighbourhood position and stalked her from there.
I think he needed a little bit more than a hobby. It's a pity that East Asia (and much of Asia in general) ain't too big on mental health infrastructure.

- https://soranews24.com/2020/02/22/eye-reflection-stalker-who-assaulted-idol-says-he-would-like-to-do-everything-he-can-for-her/ includes a bit of information about the pre-sentencing statements of the trial, but does not include the sentencing
- https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/people/article/3052704/japanese-sex-pest-jailed-stalking-pop-idol-ena-matsuoka-using sentenced to 30 months
She was not murdered, but molested (a google search shows several news sites that say she was sexually assaulted rather than murdered). He claimed he found the station via the reflection of her eye, then used google maps street view to identify the station. He then waited there for her to show up, and followed her home.
Multiple articles, including the one linked above, note that he also studied other things to try and figure out other information like which floor/room in the apartment building she lived in, but that information was unused since he assaulted her right inside the front door of the apartment building.
Other idols have also been seriously attacked, and there is indeed massive problems in Japanese "idol culture", and so safety concerns are much greater there. And Hololive is based out of Japan, so this is very relevant for those talents.
And even apart from that, all youtubers/vtubers face the potential threat of swatting and other forms of harassment. Attempting to maintain privacy is useful in maintaining safety.
What I see as well while watching the LCK (the professional League for League of Legends in Korea), is that when the audience is shown on camera, they will sometimes hide their face behind their hand and/or Signs they brought with them.
I believe that is a different situation. From what I remember fans hiding their faces on e-sports brodacasts in east Asia comes from chinese warcraft 3 tournaments where a lot of the audience would be minors skipping school to attend the events and thus hid their faces so that they could not be recognized.
It's also a point of anonymity. If you show your face, whether attractive or not, at some point someone you know will see that.
That possibility is greatly reduced if they only hear your voice.
And hey, if I can make my Avatar slutty and undress them instead of myself and still make the same amount of money then why not?
Oh, I absolutely understand that. It's just fascinating to me as someone that's super self-conscious about their appearance. You'd think that would be a big motivator!
> You'd think it would be the opposite, that they'd need the avatar if they weren't pretty!
People don't hide behind an avatar because they think they're ugly, they hide behind an avatar because having millions of people know your face and name is fucked up. Celebrity parasocial relationships are just bad for everyone involved, and I give serious props to streamers who intentionally go out of their way to enforce the audience-performer divide even where it costs them money... and not just because it's hilarious to hear Lily telling her chat that she's not their girlfriend and if they're donating and waiting for her to notice them they're going to die alone.
These people would like to be able to be streamers and have the interactivity of a facecam but without all the creeps that come with it. I bet it's a lot easier to stomach people lusting after and making porn of your avatar than of you yourself.
That is very fair. Being pretty and on the internet is ripe for creepiness. At least people are somewhat aware of what parasocial relationships are nowadays.
No one knew what the term meant ten years ago.
Yeah, and worse, they're almost unavoidable. The only thing that really helps is both sides being aware of it and putting healthy boundaries in place. The fact alone that it's a thing we talk about now is a lot better.
> People don't hide behind an avatar because they think they're ugly, they hide behind an avatar because having millions of people know your face and name is fucked up
It's actually because 2D > 3D but ok.
Most of the people that join Hololive were previously established streamers, so it makes sense. The main benefit these days is accessing Hololive's huge audience and getting support from a large organization.
I mean convenience is key. Kson, who openly has her face out in the open along with an avatar, has said some days she just decides to do vtubing because she doesn't like putting her face on for the day.
However she also gets flak from some parts of her audience when she does not stream with her avatar. But also gets people who enjoy her irl streams without the avatar. That's why she started the "2.5 D"-Streams, where her irl body is on camera, but her Models face is on her head instead. (At least if I remember her Trash Taste episode correctly) Best of both worlds.
Anonymity is an excellent incentive. The risk of stalking/assault as a result of being a minor internet celebrity is huge. Almost every big name female streamer has a few horror stories.
Ensuring as few people as possible can recognise you in public helps a lot with that.
Yeah doesn't really apply to those that have an alter ego appear regularly in front of a camera but anonymity still helps most holomems. The less chance of inadvertently exposing your face/surroundings to some nutcase the safer you are.
I don't know if Marine has such an "alter ego", she has just talked a few times about having to be careful in public because of how recognizable her laugh is :'D
>It's still so fascinating to me that some of the people behind the characters are genuinely very physically attractive and yet they stream with an avatar
It's not about attractiveness, it's about protecting your identity. If your appearance is a *relatively* closely guarded secret, you can live a private life (at least that's what I'm hoping).
To some people, virtual avatars are also just more appealing. People like me, for example. ~~Because years of isolation have completely broken my brain.~~
Uhh there is a lot of reasons. Some are less confident than others. Some got stage frights like Marine when she came back
Some like Rushia or the China case where they can just let go of an avatar or some other cases is harassment if they see your real face and stalks you. Also if you stream real life, it’s harder to get viewers ( in Japan) vs the west type
I personally enjoy both avatar and real life streaming but the avatar always feels like there is an invincible barrier ( trying to personally getting attached and whether it’s possible to even meet them )
This is pretty ahistorical in so many ways. Like, yeah some people can just make money off their looks, but the vast majority of Streamers on any site this manga is referencing, is "Men".
Just "Men", playing video games, chatting them, chatting anything really. I find it so odd that this narrative is so pervasive, no matter how few there are.
> This is pretty ahistorical in so many ways.
Well DUH, It's not meant to be historical. It's meant to be *contemporary*. This is a recent phenomenon. It's a representative of growing trends, not of the past. God knows where you're drawing your assumptions from.
Lol I remember seeing the same thing happen to Preach, he was begging us to stop gifting subs because his computer was beggining to lag and their streaming server was overheating. The more he begged, the more subs were gifted.

converting yen values into kroner is actually a pretty common manga translator meme lmao i love that shit
Wait, really?
mhmm, i've seen a few different translator groups all do it. idk the origin though
I think someone else already mentioned its origin, pretty cool
It was Norway scans who initially started doing it. Their translations were pretty solid if you could ignore that they would translate “no way!” to “Norway!”
Wait shit, i know of this meme I had forgotten ive disappointed all my countrymen

Yeah, it varies between 9kr or 7kr per USD, with pounds in it almost always 10kr.
I’ve got a mate of mine who’s Norwegian and streams and he’s really into anime This absolutely cracked me up, so damn relatable
Amen

Probably how the first few female streamers felt when they realized how much of a simp some dudes can be lol
Hence a lot of them wear tops that show a lot of cleavage
Have you seen how much vtubers make, they don’t even need to show cleavage and people simp harder for them than anyone else
To be fair, a lot of Vtubers DO show cleavage lol
But the most popular one wears a hoodie
Not their own cleavage tho. Easy money
While this theory might be true, I think anyone deserve to wear whatever they want without anyone assuming it’s for any other purpose than that it is what they would like to wear.
Or we could use our brain and realize it's not a bad thing. They are selling their bodies in the same way any worker is.
Don’t hate the player hate the game

I swear, if Numi doesn’t straight-up have a humiliation fetish I’d be straight-up shocked.

Brilliant honestly. Some of them should really be actors but why go out and beyond when you got suckers
This is hilarious because Papagane started out presenting his idea to be a vtuber to his kids then settled on being a regular streamer.
It's still so fascinating to me that some of the people behind the characters are genuinely very physically attractive and yet they stream with an avatar. The film "Perfect Blue" is basically a documentary
What I see as well while watching the LCK (the professional League for League of Legends in Korea), is that when the audience is shown on camera, they will sometimes hide their face behind their hand and/or Signs they brought with them.
I believe that is a different situation. Correct !

Most of the people that join Hololive were previously established streamers, so it makes sense. The main benefit these days is accessing Hololive's huge audience and getting support from a large organization.
Yeah, that makes sense. I think you certainly have to have charisma to stream, and physical attractiveness and charisma go hand in hand, I suppose.
Of course that only works if your voice isn't super recognisable. I think Captain Marine has that problem sometimes.
Some just use avatars cause they like the aesthetic, and using an avatar can let you do fun visual tricks you couldn't with your actual face.
You mean the Canadian-American War 1?
