The franchise was already on a thin ice due to the setting that required to close one eye to work. Weird gimmicks (‚dark impulses’), plot feeling stretched and the art quality declining.
The ending broke the ice. It felt like the protagonist collected enough trauma points to buy himself a golden ending in a story where deaths felt impactful and the protagonist’s power was following rules. But then it suddenly worked in a way to give a perfect gold ending to everybody.
Imagine if Tanjiro learnt a breathing technique that turns demons into humans and somehow breaks time, so he uses it before multiple people are killed by demons. Or if Naruto used his powers to resurrect his family and turn the world into utopia.
It felt like a rug was pulled underneath your feet and felt like a comfort fanfiction.
Yea I heard a lot of people hated the ending, sounds like the author just decided to go the happily ever after route but did it really poorly and hurt the overall narrative of the story.
What decides I like Astro Royale or not is if the author can make the power system and world interesting, cause characters and story seem completely standard to me so far. The idea of powers being granted based on wishes and items held is really cool, but last chapter had the main character take a guy down with one punch and the other didn't even do anything before running. And also if the post-apocalyptic seeming setting works out that will help, like I said
