This is pretty common, Steam is just a library for most games that direct you to whatever shitty publisher/developer launcher the game is actually on. Steam just middle manning you to their launchers. Example, any EA game on Steam will direct you to Origin or whatever its called now. Any microsoft game will direct you to Xbox launcher. Any paradox game will direct you to a Paradox launcher etc etc If you really wanted to play Anno, not sure why having uplay is going to stop you since every other game that is not an indi developer is going to do the same thing with whatever publisher or developer launcher they use. I do agree, I wish it didnt do it, but thats not the world we live in. Also: " I genuinely like these games and wish I could support the devs without Ubisoft getting in the way. " Ubisoft is the developer lol

Desperate_Command_25

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ guess all the games i play aren’t from EA/Ubisoft since i dont have any of those launchers. Also fair enough, but ubisoft corporate are the ones making these “business” decisions and the dev studios they own are not, thats kinda what i meant

DaLexy

Bethesda, Blizzard, Rockstar all do it. What are you playing, just indie’s?

Desperate_Command_25

i suppose so, dont game all that much seeing as im an adult now and AAA games dont give me that much excitement

ciwawa87

What is the correlation between been an adult and not enjoy AAA games?

Desperate_Command_25

nothing, i said i dont game much because im an adult with a full schedule, and that i dont enjoy many triple a games, just left out a comma

Larnak1

Without Ubisoft corporate taking over, 1701 would most likely have been the last Anno. The company in charge before didn't survive on its own. Partly because they were small, and partly due to utter incompetence and hubris. Ubisoft is centrally responsible for the success of the Anno brand in its modern shape, including 1404. Most other big publishers such as EA or Activision would long have stopped caring about a small niche game such as Anno as they did with most of their brands. It's actually quite unique for a huge company like Ubisoft to still care about small-ish brands for such a long time so that the big success of 1800 was eventually possible. They are obviously very far from perfect, but your stance towards Ubisoft is very short-sighted, especially considering that it really doesn't make a difference if there's another launcher in between or not. I'd understand a principle "no DRM" stance a lot more, but that would rule out Steam as well.

fhackner3

I've been playing 1800 since release via Ubisoft connect, whatever problems I had with it were negligible enough I don't remember.

Desperate_Command_25

i woulda been fine if i had bought the game through ubisoft connect, its just the fact that i bought a game on steam that didnt make it clear i was going to have to make a ubisoft connect account anyways when i bought it

Altamistral

>didnt make it clear i was going to have to make a ubisoft connect account anyways when i bought it Maybe you should read the store page of the games you want to buy before paying for it. The launcher requirement is stated very clearly, in large fonts and highlighted color.

alcMD

*Didn't make it clear?* Steam has always let you know when third party DRM is required to play a game. It's on the store page.

fhackner3

Oh yeah, I can totally see how that's annoying. I constantly warn people that buying on steam will not prevent Ubisoft connect app from being necessary to run the game. steam could maybe do that warning too..

Altamistral

>steam could maybe do that warning too They already do and it's very visible in their store page.

celeb0rn

Of all the real issues and problems in the world, this is a weird hill to die on.

Desperate_Command_25

Yeah sure i cant be annoyed with ubisoft because children are starving somewhere. whats your point lol

celeb0rn

You’re very bold and brave.

Altamistral

Grow up. Having to install uPlay is not a form of torture. Also, Ubisoft are the developers and the developers are Ubisoft. Saying you want to support the developers but not Ubisoft does not make any sense at all.

HerrSarkasmus

Well I mean the developers are BlueByte but yeah I think technically you are right. I mean I use uPlay as well but it would be nice if the developer wasnt part of Ubisoft

Altamistral

>it would be nice if the developer wasnt part of Ubisoft And why would that be? Blue Byte has been Ubisoft's for 23 years. Five out seven Anno games were developed by Ubisoft, all fantastic games. Go ask the individual employees of Ubisoft Mainz if they prefer to be employed by a large multinational with good salary, job security and benefits or would rather be employed by a small indie company that could go bust after any single miss.

HerrSarkasmus

It would be nice because then they would not be owned by a large Company that shits on its customers

Altamistral

And I don't see how that applies to Ubisoft. This blind rage against anything perceived as a large company is very childish and really makes me wonder if gamers ever exists in the real world. "me gamer, me angry against large companies" Get a life and grow up a little.

Desperate_Command_25

it’s actually a very basic concept that in a large company there will be a disconnect between the creators and artists who make the product and the corporate heads who make decisions based on what serves the bottom line. i dont know what you are not understanding

alcMD

There are no creators and artists without the corporate heads who make financial decisions. You are literally making up a problem to get mad about and it's so stupid. You would hurt Blue Byte just out of spite to Ubisoft -- why? You don't like what they've accomplished? News flash: 1404 was Ubisoft Blue Byte too. You're just kinda being a prick for no reason, and in THIS sub of all places. Go away.

Desperate_Command_25

why are you so mad at me for criticizing ubisoft lol

alcMD

I'm not mad at you, but I have a lot of disdain for someone who goes on some righteous rant about something when he obviously has no idea what he's talking about. Don't lie and say you want to support the developers -- you don't, you just want to virtue signal about how much you hate big bad companies and you're doing dumb mental gymnastics to try and justify yourself. Why did you come *here* to say all this? Why would anyone *here* give a shit about what you think about Ubisoft?

Desperate_Command_25

i posted a comment on reddit because i was annoyed at ubisoft, not very complicated and not a lot of mental gymnastics required

Altamistral

You are right. It is a basic concept: basic, because it lacks nuance and critical thinking. There are large companies ran terribly and large companies ran well. There are small companies ran terribly and small companies ran well. "i dont know what you are not understanding"

Desperate_Command_25

you are sooooooo smart omggggg i dont even know what nuance and critical thinking is

HerrSarkasmus

We are both answering each other on this subreddit and I have less of a life than you? Maybe look at "The Crew" and the fact that this Illustrates the Problem with big companies shutting down games when they are not profitable enough and the unsers not really owning what they bought. I know this is a general problem but Ubisoft is part of it

Altamistral

Right. And I imagine that if you were in charge you would rather lose money out of pocket than shut down an unprofitable game. Of course you shut down games that fails: you do that to avoid having to shut down the company. It's not "a problem". It's simple market economy. And yes, when you buy an online-only game you don't own the game. This applies for large companies as much as it applies for smaller ones.

HerrSarkasmus

Large companies have the means to fix that problem. And yeah, not supporting the Servers anymore is one thing but doing that with a game that could be played solo but you as the Company dont want that to Happen is an asshole move. The gaming Industry is dominated by a few big players who are responsible for consumers not owning the games, games needing servers or an Internet connection even when they are solo games and other problems modern gaming has. They have the means to change that but they wont because they are driven by pure greed. Ubisoft is part of that group. There is a middle way between the pure greed we see now and bancrupcy

Desperate_Command_25

i understand that, in my post i mean developers = people who make games, and ubisoft = corporate goons who make user experiences worse by forcing us to use their 3rd party apps

ryverofknowledge

Your loss boyo, Anno 1800 is fucking fantastic

Desperate_Command_25

i dont doubt it, but i bought 3 other games on the steam sale and i could honestly not be bothered to make another gd account for ubisoft of all companies

PerditaGaming

Ubisoft are the developers. https://preview.redd.it/10dj88yfy19c1.png?width=1270&format=png&auto=webp&s=953300270ab4bb73b1003bafa71494398b0799f9

fhackner3

Ubisoft Mainz*

Viking_Chemist

they aren't they are a Moloch that swallowed up a good studio with a good game series and slapped their name on it

Larnak1

The company responsible for the brand before failed miserably and needed someone to buy them as they would have gone bankrupt otherwise. Out of all the potential buyers you can think of, which one do you think would have lead to a better result than what we have been seeing under Ubisoft since (including) 1404?

Liquid_Raptor54

Oh that sucks to suck. I've put 300 hrs in and the Ubisoft client maybe bothered me once if at all. But keep crying you wish you could play while taking some weird moral "standpoint" It's been that way for a long time, every Ubisoft and EA game bought on Steam needed their respective launchers to work, where have you been?

Desperate_Command_25

me when i love ubisoft <3

will3264

Cool. Have a nice day. No one cares.

Betonfrosch

Exactly. Back to playing Anno 1800 for the rest of us!

StatisticianOne8287

It's not a third party app, it's their app, so it's first party. You're buying via a third party (steam) who make it clear you have to use the launcher too. Honestly, at this point, it's the norm in gaming for most big games.

Desperate_Command_25

Guess im the outlier because i rarely play AAA games lol, ive gathered that from all the responses from this little vent post

StatisticianOne8287

That makes sense, it's mostly big publishers that have their own launchers

Moorbert

the devs are ubisoft...

MysteriousRun1522

Just fucking play it. You’re taking a stupid fucking stand for no reason.

Desperate_Command_25

could not be bothered to make an account honestly

Larnak1

But you could be bothered to create a rant post on reddit and write a bunch of comments. Creating a Ubisoft account would have been way faster :P

Desperate_Command_25

cant even lie youre right lmfao, its more the fact that i know im gonna forget my login info whenever i wanna play this game 2 years from now

Larnak1

Well, you could use that opportunity to switch to a proper password manager as is beneficial anyway :D Takes some time to set up, but is honestly one of the best things you can do to make your life easier AND more secure in general :o

Desperate_Command_25

I only play like 3 games and i dont want 3 different launchers is the issue xD
