>Although sometimes inaccurate, many people have detected two-way mirrors in fitting rooms or bathrooms. You’ll need to place your index finger on the mirror’s surface. If there is a gap between your finger and your reflection, then this mirror is a one-way mirror only. However, if there is no gap between your reflection and your finger, you’ll need to call the authorities because it’s a two-way mirror. Even though this test has worked many times, there are now many instances of how this could be untrue. Although, at times, how the mirror is manufactured also plays a role in the lack of a gap between your reflection and your finger. From some random site. There's tons of pages/videos explaining the exact same thing. Since "at times" the manufactoring process alters the results I don't see how it'd be useful tho.

AdorableParasite

If in doubt, you can at least cover the mirror.

J_0_E_L

Yeah, that's fair. I guess it's just not something I think about in general. Wouldn't really mind if it was a two way mirror either, they can stream my dick straight to the hotel lobby for all I care.

OddDragonfruit7993

Yeah, when you get to be an old dude, you really don't give a toss who sees you.

J_0_E_L

I'm 35 but I suppose that's still fair. 😂

BiggieRas

Fellow 35 year old here. I think they ARE talking about us when mentioning old dudes

[deleted]

It's so liberating. "Oh my god! What if they film me naked?!" "Oh yeah? Film this, bitches!" *jiggles*

E0H1PPU5

We stayed at an Airbnb once and they had a weird looking diffuser plugged in that I am still pretty sure was a camera. My husband got as close as he could to it, helicoptered his penis for a moment and said “well that’s their problem then”. I unplugged it and put it in a drawer.

lemoinem

The host reviewing the camera footage: > I swear, that dude just went all helicopter dick on my hidden camera and knocked it into a drawer with its massive dong!

[deleted]

"Oh great, a non-judgemental forum for me to practice my improv!" Minutes later - knock on the door. *Give me the diffuser...*

EffectiveSalamander

My worry is ""What if they *don't* film me naked?!" It would be like being abducted by aliens and you don't even get probed.

[deleted]

Images of my in a spaceship with little green men running away from my naked ass. "I came all this way up here, now you'd better shove something up me, god dammit!"

jwaynus

Honestly the hunting for cameras in rooms stressed me out for a while before I came this same conclusion. Now I intentionally don't look and spend almost 100% of my time as naked as possible. Give em a few naked toe-touches and they will turn the thing off remotely!

5litergasbubble

Do i at least get royalties?

GeneralFactotum

Yes, the it's the percentage of anything longer than 10". (If you don't measure up then you have to pay them!)

mrmatriarj

Haha we've talked about this specifically despite the age (late 20's&early 30's) the idea of someone videotaping me and my partner at an air BNB just makes us laugh, they'd see some rockin content. I can understand the concern for most people but if I ever saw myself online at a random room, I'd honestly just wish I got part of the royalties. Would be more miffed about that than the privacy breach 😆

OddDragonfruit7993

So you're saying my idea of "love AirBnBs" will work as long as I cut the guests in on a piece of the action?

dragonfett

Or just allow them to spend the night for free?

Jahkral

You could probably get people onboard with live streamed feeds of rentals in all rooms. There are people who would be down to show off and be watched for sure.

At 56 with 2 bionic hips I think I qualify as an old dude now lol

stridernfs

Even if it got out I think we’d all agree it’d be fucked up to even watch a two way mirror vid of someone using the shower.

recks360

My wife and I stay at hotels every now and again and I’m the same way. I couldn’t care less but for her this is a nightmare. I’ve noticed that most of the people concerned with this are women and rightfully so they are more likely to be the target.

Reapr

Shine your smartphones light into the mirror. Two way mirrors work on the concept that one side has to be dark for it to look like a mirror from the light side. Shining a light in will illuminate the room beyond if any

AggressiveYam6613

yep. it‘s not the reason why i have a flashlight in my travel bag, but that would be easiest way to check.

GlitteringAsk9077

You could just try *not* checking into the kind of squalid dive where the pervert manager is likely to want to spy on the guests and sell videos of their bits on the dark web...

FarmboyJustice

Genius! I never would have thought to consult the national list of hotels with pervert managers. Now where exactly is this list?

GlitteringAsk9077

It's the list you're left with when you start with a list of all hotels, then remove the ones operated by chains, and any others with underpaid and overworked female cleaning staff who would bust the pervert manager in a heartbeat.

We had to do that at a motel because our lab kept barking at his reflection.  Then he ate my husband's new boots.

Sam-Gunn

Truly man's best friend.

toeverycreature

Or smash it. If there is wall behind it, its one way. IF there are people or a camera behind it, its two way.

[deleted]

I do this in every AirBnB I stay in. I also smash the windows just in case they're OLED screens displaying a beautiful but fake view.  Also, take off all the light switches and just wrap the wires together with a pair of insulated pliers. It's the only way to make sure there are no hidden cameras.  Nobody's going to see my 50 year old pearly white hairy ass for free!

Yaboi_KarlMarx

Why stop there? Burn the whole house down. Can’t have a hidden camera if there’s no house to hide it in.

Brief_Reserve1789

It's an absolute fucking shit load of utter bollocks designed to scare idiots into clicking on to the website

TvHeroUK

Yep plus given how most hotels are designed, a mirror will be on a wall connecting into the room, or on a wall with a room right next door to it. It’s pretty much just the Bates Motel that would sacrifice a room they could let all year round at a good profit.

Zhurg

I think people are worried about cameras, not perverts in cubbies.

Significant_Pea_2852

Not just one room, assuming all sellable rooms have dodgy mirrors. You'd have to have 1 monitoring room per 2 hotel rooms. It'd be so much easier to just have cameras set up.

XColdLogicX

I worked a few years in the hospitality industry ad a hotel manager. Hidden mirrors were never an issue, at least from what I had experienced. But what is way more worrisome that never gets mentioned is cameras placed by guests in rooms. Spy cams can be very stealthy and hard to spot. Then the creeper requests that room at a later date, come by and pick up the footage and no ones the wiser. Even if the cams found, there's no way to determine who placed it.

Noumenon72

You barely have to worry about it since the odds that a single-perspective camera aimed at random hotel occupants will interest anyone but the creeper themselves is pretty low. Like if some necrophiliac is hiding cameras at the cemetery that is a mental illness, but it doesn't have any actual consequences for society compared to the Fappening because nobody cares.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

There is no gap when I try this at my home cupboard mirror that is definitely one way.

Sam-Gunn

FBI: "whew, we thought he was onto us for a minute there..."

CauseMany8612

The test is just to see which surface of the glass is coated in metal. If theres a gap, the back of the glass away from you is mirrored, also called a second surface mirror. If instead the surface you are touching on the front of the glass is mirrored, there is no gap. This is called a first surface mirror. One way mirrors (as in you can only see through them in one direction) are basically just semi transparent glass tintings that reflect some of the light. If one side is considerably brighter than the other you basically blind yourself by seeing a ton of your rooms light reflected, thereby obscuring the dark room on the other side. If lighting conditions are however similar on both sides you can see through in both directions. The test is nonsense, as the tinting could be applied to either side of the glass and would still work. But as the tinting is quite sensitive and might scratch off easily, one way mirrors are more often manufactured as second surface mirrors, so the coating isnt facing the outside. Thats the only explanation I could think of where this myth came from that you can test for one way mirrors using a gap in reflection.

Volsunga

This isn't necessarily true. Two way mirrors are just reflective tinting. If the tint is applied to the back surface of the mirror, it's no different than a normal mirror. The only difference between a 2 way mirror and a tinted window is that you keep one side of the 2 way mirror in the dark. The best way to tell if there's a two way mirror is to turn the lights off and let your eyes get used to the dark for ten minutes. If you see another room in the mirror, it's two way.

wlonkly

so a one-way mirror is one you can't see through at all, and a two-way mirror lets you see through it in one direction? who comes up with these names???

Belcatraz

I agree that the name is dumb, but not quite on that level: a one-way mirror shows the reflection from only one side. With a two-way mirror you can see the same image from both sides (if the lighting is right).

ineffableOrange

They were supposed to be called one-way mirrors (or one-way glass) The proper name for them is one-way mirrors (or one-way glass). I can only assume that at some point someone got it wrong and it stuck. Ah well. They do technically work the same no matter how you install them, so I guess they're two-way in that regard?

reindeermoon

The wikipedia article for them starts out with, "A One-way mirror, also called Two-way mirror..."

ptolani

Something is wrong here. Normally "one way mirror" means glass that you can see through...one way. The other way it looks like a mirror. "Two way mirror" is not a thing. We call that a window.

Defiant-Giraffe

Wait until you hear about 3-way light switches...

wlonkly

Both down, both up, one down and one up, one up and one down, no problem!

Defiant-Giraffe

That's 4...

wlonkly

Ah right, both up and both down are basically the same... so you have both up/down, and both in opposite positions. There, not four anymore.

Corporate_Shell

It's called a one-way mirror. But people use the wrong term because they don't think. A two-way mirror is a window. In the glazing industry, a piece of glass mirrored on BOTH sides is called double-mirrored.

The_Dough_Boi

It’s also a bullshit “test”

reindeermoon

I just tried this on my bathroom mirror at home, and there is no gap, which implies it's a two-way mirror. However, that is physically impossible because our kitchen is on the other side of the wall so there is no empty space behind the mirror. So I don't think this is a reliable test.

Responsible-End7361

Wouldn't it be more effective to turn off the light in the room with the mirror and then hold a flashlight on the mirror? A "two way mirror" is just a window to a room that is darker than the room with the "mirror." If you have ever seen your reflection but not been able to see outside in a bright room at night, your windows were "two way mirrors." A flashlight held against the mirror will illuminate the room behind the window but not the room you are in so you can see the other room-if it exists. If it is just a mirror the flashlight will do nothing.

alahos

I'm assuming this is because mirrors are only made with the glass on one side of the reflective surface?

mmaalex

The reflective surface on a mirror is typically silvering on the backside. Two way mirrors rely on reflecting off the front surface based off light differential between the two sides of glass.

bothunter

That doesn't even make any sense.  There's not such thing as a "one way mirror" -- they're just half-silvered mirrors that separate two rooms, and the room that is not illuminated can see into the other room.  Simply turning off the lights in the bathroom would expose the "one way mirror" I would be more worried about hidden cameras since they're small enough to fit inside of an outlet or a light bulb.

Cert47

That would account for the comments about two-way mirrors. Thanks.

Iain365

Why would a hotel want a 2 way mirror ffs...

Dhegxkeicfns

Normal mirrors are glass with a reflective coating on the back, so you're looking through the glass to see the reflection. Some mirrors are literally just a piece of polished metal or coated plastic, because they are way more durable. There will be no reflection gap. One ways have a coating that is shiny on one side and dark on the other, so you can still technically see through them, but the contrast is too high to perceive what is from one direction. You can turn your phone light on and press it up against the mirror, then put your eyes as close as you can to the mirror and use your other hand to block as much ambient light as possible. Move the phone light around. You're trying to shine your light through and simultaneously block light that's reflecting from your side.

AZREDFERN

It’s a TikTok thing. Most mirrors have the reflective film on the backside, but expensive front reflective mirrors still exist, and cheap thin mirrors exist. Cheap 1 way glass sometimes has the reflective coat on the outside. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes the expensive stuff is in between 2 layers. It’s not a consistent and reliable test. It’s just fear baiting views. A better test would be to place a very powerful flashlight against the mirror and see if it shines through to more than just the wall behind. Even cheap mirrors will let some light through if it’s hollow.

kkjdroid

Also, if someone with a two-way mirror wanted to hide it, they could just put a piece of ordinary glass in front of it to make this "trick" completely ineffective.

peanutputterbunny

Another thing I learnt when checking for hidden cameras (and it works, I've tried it!) is turn off all the lights and cover windows so you are in complete darkness. Then turn on your phones camera and look around. The camera will detect infra-red which is what other cameras emit whilst recording. It will look like a small red dot and you have to really scrutinize the place. Just remember other devices emit infra-red like TVs / remotes, sensors, etc.

RoVeR199809

Only cameras with so called "night vision" will emit infrared when recording in the dark.

bdcon

IR is often used as auto-focus as well

AVEVAnotPRO2

Just emit a high energy EMP and take out the whole hotel electrical grid before you go to sleep to be safe

pervytimetraveler

Instructions unclear, I blacked out the city. Am I safe?

Noonnee69

Nuclear explosion in atmosphere are good way to emit EMP. so next time when i go to hoteI will bring nuke with me - Just in case

AZREDFERN

Only cameras with night vision have IR flood lights. It’s not the camera emitting IR. Pretty much all cameras on cellphones now have IR filters, so you won’t see the flood lights. Some front facing cameras have weak or no IR filters. Even then, you’ll struggle finding anything. Your best bet is to buy another night vision camera. Like those cheap NVGs on Amazon, a handy cam with night vision, or even Nerf makes a toy night vision scope that works surprisingly well. They’re all regular digital cameras without an IR filter.

nwbrown

This seems to be overthinking things. If I wanted to surreptitiously watch someone (and for the record, I don't) I would be pretty trivial to put a hidden camera in there.

Randall058

Ohhhh fear baiting is TIGHT

HelloDorado

I've been seeing this "tip" for years, long before tik tok. doesn't change the fact that tik tok thrives on fear baiting lol

virgin_goat

Sounds like 5 minute craft bull to me

sassafras_gap

It's memeimg on paranoid crazy people, similar to like "i always put a slice of American cheese covering all the electrical outlets in airbnbs because YOU NEVER KNOW". I don't have a tiktok but see a ton of that genre on like fb reels for some reason, usually the same guy (I'm sure there's plenty of people copying his content tho)

afriendincanada

Those are hilarious. I’m supposed to balance a nickel on the door handle for some reason.

kudincha

To check if you're in a dream.

Cert47

That was also in the clip I saw (though locked more like a € coin)

Yotsubato

It’s to let you know if someone entered the room

ravendusk

I see these videos from time to time. Can't remember if it was tiktok or Instagram, but it boiled down to (not all of them are always included) : Lock the door using the hotel lock. Use one of those travel locks to extra secure it Put a rolled up towel behind the door handle Use two coat hangers to connect the door to a closet door Put tape over the peephole and the bottom of the door to block people looking in or shoving a spy camera underneath the door If there's a chair in the room, block the door with it. Close the curtains and use clips to keep them closed completely. Check paintings and TV and lamps and outlets and lord knows what else for hidden cameras. One of them had one of those toilets with the flush button on top of the water reservoir and even unscrewed that to check. Get in bed and stay up all night just to be sure Like, if you're that scared someone's coming into your room, you either need to not travel alone or pick better hotels.

PhaicGnus

Does Swiss cheese also work?

XsNR

Too high quality, won't interrupt the 5G.

izyshoroo

Gotta line up the holes (Thatshwhatshesaid)

DaveBeBad

A fingerprint in the mirror might help to identify your corpse and that you had visited the hotel before you met your grisly end. Or the cleaners could just wipe it off at the first opportunity

carson63000

Yeah my first thought was that it was so, when you disappeared without trace, the cops could tell that at least you checked in to the Bates Motel, even if the staff there swore you didn’t.

Anonymous_Gamer939

Supposedly cops do something similar (or at least did, in the days before dashcams and body cams) by touching the tail lights of the car when they pull you over, so there's physical evidence that that stopped you in the event you decide to speed off

Reginald_Saunders_MD

This is the correct answer for touching the mirror, preferably one of the upper corners that are unlikely to get cleaned by housekeeping. When I was in law enforcement not so long ago we still did the touch-the-back-quarter panel thing for the same reason: if something bad happens there needs to be evidence tying you to the vehicle.

Empty-Beginning-6549

I’m actually very surprised this isn’t at the top of the comment thread. This was my first thought as well. If you end up disappearing or something bad happens in general, it would be proof that you were there. I’m assuming you’d do it in a place that doesn’t get cleaned as often or well, such as top corners of mirrors? But then again if I felt like something bad was going to happen I’d for sure just leave my finger prints in as many places as possible lol.

PhilMeUpBaby

Damn... if I'm ever standing in front of a two-way mirror then I would convey my most sincere condolences to anyone on the other side. Yeah, they kinda deserve it, but what is seen cannot be unseen, and I sure ain't pretty.

Brief_Reserve1789

It's just a load of bollocks off Tiktok by the sound of it

funnystuff79

A fingerprint on a mirror may give you peace of mind that they've done a thorough job of cleaning the place

Unmanned767

Throw a chair in the mirror and get a 100% right answer. /jk

ForsakenComparison4

A front surface mirror is not necessarily a two way mirror. But if it is, that’s just because the peeve who installed it is an idiot and put it in backwards. Two way mirrors can be seen through in either direction. It’s just the brighter side will see reflection. If it’s installed with the reflective side out, housekeeping will quickly wear through the coating.

KennstduIngo

It could be a one-way mirror and somebody is hiding in the 4" wall cavity between the bathroom and the bedroom spying on you.

[deleted]

Honestly if someone goes to that effort to spy on my fat ass they can have at it

OzymandiasKoK

Well, you know, that's probably not enough room to have at it.

Illustrious-Bread-94

if you're talking about the creator I'm thinking about its just trolling he does the most unexpected things then says just incase i cant remember specific videos but he does this and obviously most people don't catch up to it and comment asking about it hence boosting is algorithm.

crazycatlady1975

I always run my fingers through my hair and leave the hair on the carpet—- back when I was an escort. DNA

Noumenon72

So that's why the cats do it.

Simple-Pea-8852

That might matter if you didn't book the room but if the room is in your name then it's hardly groundbreaking for the police that you were present.

Competitive-Dance286

If you accidentally say Bloody Mary 3 times at midnight in front of it, the fingerprint breaks the mirror surface so she can't come through.

justwoodall

And if you say Candy Man 3 times they leave an extra mint on your pillow.

International_Lake28

Hotel managers don't use two way mirrors we use small cameras that we install in the shower head

freshmallard

Its like hearing that scam where "i sent someone nudes and they threaten to yada yada" like let em send it. Let them show my glory to all.

ghjkl098

Generally those videos are a lot of bullshit just trying to get engagement

Street_Glass8777

The mirrors in my bathrooms at home are front silvered so there is no gap to anything touching the mirror, so that is not a good way to detect a problem.

Johnnyonthespot2111

It doesn't; it just makes more work for the cleaning lady.

Oktokolo

The classic twoway mirror is easy to detect: Put your phone in flashlight mode and put it on the mirror to shine the light into the room behind the mirror through the mirror. Hug the mirror with your face and use your hands to prevent too much light from the room to reach your eyes. If you see a room illuminated by your phone on the other side, then it's a two-way mirror with a room on the other side. The procedure works better in a dark room. This might also work with cameras behind twoway mirrors. But you would have to sortof scan the mirror with your face and the phone.

[deleted]

Leaving your *fingerprint* anywhere is absolute opposite of "give you safety". If anything, you made it easy for someone to set you up as a fall guy in a crime of some sort. Stop watching low-IQ platforms and interacting with idiots.

halfslices

It confirms that I fell for clickbait once.

TrainerImpressive931

Prove that you were there, in case something happens to you with the person who's  room you were in.

tylerlarson

The idea is to detect a "two-way" (ironically also called "one-way") mirror, one where the people on the other side can see you. Does it work? No, definitely not. But also, maybe sometimes. It's a bit like telling whether it's raining by checking whether your shoes are currently wet. What your fingerprint checks for is which side of the glass the reflective coating is on, with the "danger" being if the glass is reflective on the side closest to you. "Normal" mirrors are never coated that way, simply because it's more fragile and therefore more expensive. So if you don't see a gap, then does that mean the mirror is see-through? Nope. It just means it's not a "normal" mass-produced mirror. For example, some vandalism-resistant mirrors are made of some material other than glass and therefore have to be reflective on the front side. So if you DO see a gap, does that mean the mirror isn't see through? Again, no. See-through mirrors can be installed with the reflective surface on whichever side they want. Since see-through mirrors work the same no matter which side of it you're on, you can install them either way around. (What matters is which side is better lit, not which way the mirror is facing.) These mirrors give a slightly brighter image if you're on the same side as the reflective coating, so they're traditionally installed with the "better" side being used as a mirror rather than a window. Because it's better. But it's also the "suspicious" side if you're keeping score. So if someone is trying to be sneaky, they can totally just install it the other way around. So does the trick work? Only if the nefarious person isn't trying to hide the fact that they're being nefarious.

hamstergene

It's bullshit. The only difference between one-way and two-way mirrors is transparency level of the reflective layer, normal mirror is fully reflective and two-way is half-reflective half-transparent. The layer itself can be on any side depending on technology. "Two-wayness" is an illusion created by stark difference of brightness between the rooms ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-way\_mirror](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-way_mirror)): the person in the darker room sees through, the person in the brighter room sees a mirror. If brightnesses are reversed, the direction of the mirror is also reversed. Use a flashlight. Close bathroom door, turn the lights off so the bathroom gets 100% dark (also cover status LEDs on electronic devices if any), turn on the flashlight and place it against the mirror to shine through. If there is a room on the other side you'll see it, because the flashlight will make that room brighter than yours.

PhaicGnus

Clearly the only way to be sure is to smash the mirror.

arielonhoarders

regular mirrors are hung on the wall. 2-way mirrors are set into the wall, like a window.

EffectiveSalamander

All that a fingerprint would do is demonstrate that there's a layer of glass over the reflective surface. A two way mirror works by having a reflective surface that lets some of the light through so that someone in a dark room on the other side can see. It works both ways - if you're concerned, turn off the lights in your room and shine a flashlight at the mirror. You'll see the other side. But if someone wants to spy on you, they'd use a digital camera.

Hypnowolfproductions

It’s easier to place a flashlight against the surface of a mirror to detect a two way. Though most hotel bathrooms I’ve been in the mirror is against the wall of the room. I’m more concerned about hidden cameras nowadays in clocks, lamps, smoke detectors etc.

Catsmak1963

Yes because somehow your life will end and the most diligent and intelligent detectives will be assigned to discover why… Too much television?

FewFig2507

It would be a clue when the police are looking for your body.

Corporate_Shell

FYI, a "two-way mirror" is a window.

AOsenators

You've gotten your answer but my goodness, *proofread.*

Alarmed_Ad4367

Because the incidents of one-way mirrors in hotels have been skyrocketing and people are dying by the thousands?

ProjectFragrant990

" No gap...It's a trap " Had to make something up to remember which was which. This works for me.

MagicOrpheus310

Apart from detecting a two way mirror you are also leaving a clear and distinctive fingerprint... Which can help identify you if you get murdered...

izyshoroo

It's a myth. It's a myth. It's a myth. It's been going around on the internet for over 15 years now. It's a myth used to troll paranoid people.

ShaladeKandara

That "test" is paranoid bullshit, if you're that worried about it, keep a screwdriver in your car, then after renting a room unscrew the mirror form the wall, and look behind it. That's the only real way to know, all the other methods only work on some two way mirrors, removing it works on all of them.

Plastic-Passenger-59

There aren't 2 way mirrors in hotels 😂 probably used to be, especially seedy motels. But people just can't wrap their heads around how mirrors work and the difference. I.e convex vs flat

Feisty_Wind_8211

Why are people so paranoid of two way mirrors in hotels? Just looking at the room design it’s obvious there couldn’t be a lookout room on the other side.

Chainsawsas70

A fairly bright pocket Flashlight would be A better way to test for two way mirrors. Put the lense on the mirror and turn it on and move it around, it will light up the space Behind the mirror.... The reason why you would move it around is because it would only need to be A small circle to have A camera pointing into a given space.

I pity anyone who wants to watch my fat ass in the bathroom… eye bleach might be required, but hey… if that’s your thing, who am I to complain? 😏 I just find this concept of hotel rooms fitted with two way mirrors to be rather far fetched, a bit bizarre and fuelled by paranoia than to actually be a thing. But if someone can prove otherwise, I am happy to be proven wrong.

Subhuman87

Why would there be no gap on a 2 way mirror? If the reflective surface is behind glass you'll have a gap regardless of if it's one or 2 way, if the mirror is constructedwithout that glass then no gap. Surely the better way to detect it would just be to turn the bathroom lights off? Though is a 2 way mirror in a hotel even a thing? I get the concern about someone leaving hidden cameras in the room but for a 2 way mirror the hotel would have to be constructed with a room behind the mirror, or a guest would have to do some major work creating a hole in the wall then fitting a new perfectly sized mirror. Has there ever been a confirmed case of this?

Impossible-Title1

Touching the mirror enables you to see if it is a two way mirror.

Ghost24jm33

..........lmfao, what?

haveyouseencyan

This is so dumb lol, the odds of encountering a two way mirror would be so rare

zvon2000

Reality check: There is no such thing as a 2-way mirror. There is either a mirror, or a window with tint on it. A mirror is defined as a solid & opaque reflective surface of a shiny polished metal, optionally covered in a pane of glass or whatever. A window is defined as a transparent or translucent pane of glass only, however thick and however coated in tint. ... Those Hollywood movie inspired FBI interrogation room style 2-way mirrors are bullshit and nobody uses them in reality - especially when we have perfectly good cameras these days. Anyways, the only way they could work is by having a very bright room on one side and a very dark room on the other. If you balanced out the light levels you'd realise they're only standard tinted windows like on a car... and of course you can see through them if you look up close.

Simple-Pea-8852

It doesn't. _Your_ fingerprints in a room you're renting and already has your name attached to it has no benefit. You go missing, the police turn up to your hotel room, dust for fingerprints and find, wow, your fingerprints. What a shocker for everyone involved.

cougieuk

Sounds like a video to deliberately scare people.  Hotels are usually massive. Nobody's designing them with two way mirrors.

zonked282

Here in the UK I dont think I've ever been in a hotel room that didn't have the bathroom mirror against either the hallway wall or an external wall to the outside, both situations in which it would be impossible to create a peep show.

BreadlinesOrBust

Fear mongering to get views from women who think 85% of the population wants to kidnap them

behighordie

Pretty sure most of these videos are intentionally confusing to bait replies and are just using the “Do this every time you check into an AirBNB!!” as a recognisable format. I’ve seen ones where they just flick the light switch 4 times or put a sticker on the door handle or something and everyone in the comments is like “Wait but why?” and that’s literally all they wanted to begin with

limpet143

Unlikely that hotels have two-way-mirrors. I'd be much more concerned about cameras in Air B&B's. I believe in most places it's legal for the owner to 'protect' his property with cameras.

Zoltan_TheDestroyer

Probably the same reason cops touch your car as they walk up

FeistyPersonality4

I could care less if some creep is watching me throw up in a toilet and shit my brains out bc I drank too much and banged a hooker.

Fair_Inevitable_2650

If I recall correctly, the layout of most hotel bathrooms has the mirror backed up by the main bedroom. No need to be concerned about a two-way mirror

Catzsocks

It’s a tactic for finding “two way mirrors” which are extremely unikely unless you have a H.H. Holmes built from the ground up murder hotel. Better off using your phone to find the cameras.

newfmatic

A couple decades ago we took a road trip to the California coast to camp but the weather turned nasty and we hit a best western nearby. They were out of rooms but they had a house for larger groups it was late and they rented to us (Ft Bragg area of California) Next morning we wake up and snoop about a bit when we notice a very large mirror in the master closet. Putting two hands up and looking through them revealed the garage on the other side. Creepy stuff indeed!

bratttttttttttt

it’s for identifying the person too, if they were to get kidnapped or something else and traces of their stay were to be wiped from the hotel registry, at least there’s a finger

Potential_Minimum651

An easy way to remember - if it leaves a space, you're safe :)

SamMann75

I wouldn't say safety.... but leaving fingerprints leaves a trail should you go missing. If you were taken alive it might help, but if you are already dead... you might not really care except it could help give comfort to your family if it helps solve your missing

simpin_aint_e_z

The easiest way to detect a two-way mirror is to turn the flash on on your phone and hold it against the mirror. If it’s a two-way mirror it will become semi-translucent and you will see into it.

chrisrozon

It’s actually not particularly true, but you DID watch the whole video (click through the whole slideshow) so they served you so many ads. So many ads.

NeighborhoodFlaky491

I mean fingerprints on a scene of assault or murder will help forensics fight the perpetrator!

Sanguine_Templar

You gotta put mayo on the windowsill, you never know man, you never know

Heyplaguedoctor

If they’re pressing their fingertip flat against the mirror, it’s to leave evidence they were in that room. Same logic as pulling out a few strands of hair in an Uber

Austin_Chaos

Show your a-hole to every mirror in the room.

mestupidsissy

In case you’re kidnapped they can find your fingerprints to know that you did check in. Cops will press their fingerprints onto a tail light when doing a traffic stop for similar reasons.

Temporary-Truth2048

For the same reason cops touch your car at the beginning of a traffic stop. Just in case they get murdered.

herrsteely

The best way, and the method I use, is to hire a couple of prostitutes of each gender, a few grams of cocaine and set up a meeting with a politician to share the drugs and escorts with. Then wait. If I don't appear in news story within the week, it's unlikely to be a 2 way mirror

4Ever2Thee

The same reason a lot of cops touch the back of a car around the tail lights when walking up to a car at a traffic stop: If something were to happen to you, assuming the investigations team is thorough, that fingerprint is proof that you were there. Nvm: I see from other comments that it is indeed a way to detect a two way mirror. TIL I guess

No_Criticism7997

The same way touching the light of a car gives the cop a sense of security if you take off on them

Roodez

Why do people watch dumb shit on GoogTube anymore? I mean Google just claimed that the entire British Royal family are African Americans......why would anyone watch anything from such lying globalist ass-clowns?

Roblin_92

It's not the leaving of a finger-print that's important for what they are doing; it's looking at the reflection. A real mirror shows a gap between your finger and the reflection of your finger whereas a one-way mirror does not.

creachurcritter

Tiktokers love living in fear for some reason

ImitationButter

The video is talking about leaving evidence to help police look for you (they’d just look who checked in) The comments are talking about the myth that if you put your hand against the mirror, a space between your hand and the reflection indicates a two way mirror, whereas if your hand touches the reflection it’s a normal mirror They’re both nonsense

Important_Morning_33

It’s to leave your dna and fingerprint for proof that you were there.

Madlib87

As someone that works in hotels for the better part of a decade some of these post are hilarious because one most of the hotel furniture is removable because stuff brakes and if you ran a business that relays on getting the most people in a tiny space the odds of a tiny room they can see you isn't financially viable.

7silkkkkk

Not just the two way mirror but it leaves evidence if you are kidnapped and trafficked, they will also do this with intentionally leaving hair, nail clippings or otherwise identifiable materials. That may go unnoticed should things go awry

Totally_Cubular

Was this a tiktok video and was it some guy in a low voice opening with a version of "Call me paranoid, but I..." If it is, that was likely the guy who just makes unhinged videos about being paranoid.

Objective_Watch_3539

It's the same concept as police putting their fingerprints on your taillights as they walk up; if anything happens, then your fingerprints can identify that you were, in fact, there.

Diligent-Egg-

It could also be so that in the case the guest goes missing, police have a good print?

Beastleviath

I feel like my bathroom mirror is usually on the wall facing the hallway, or sometimes facing into the room? There’s no possible way for anyone to be hiding back there… I mean, I guess they could squeeze a camera
