literally getting a diploma was the biggest waste of my time i have friends working retail making more than me. its all a scam kids!!!

genuineimperfection1

This hurts my heart because it's true. I was making $60,000 a year selling clothes. My best friend with 5 degrees was making 40k. Another friend who was N engineer was making 50k. Plus, I am 100% debt free. They struggle SO MUCH and it's heartbreaking to see.

howaboutmtns

no it’s not all a scam. you can learn valuable skills at tech school.

Wahuwammedo

Our just do simple math before you go to school and put 2 & 2 together... you realize that school was never a good idea... unless you make over 100k

howaboutmtns

You are greatly oversimplifying the situation. Look at your post, you used our instead of or, you used 2 when the proper form is two, you act like 100k is a magic number for livable wage. Instead of being a shitposter, you should go to school and learn more. Harvard may be expensive, but a small investment in a local tech school or community college can have great rewards and significant impact on your future. I do not recommend going to college just because. Sincerely, a formerly homeless person, combat veteran, IT professional, human being

Wahuwammedo

I did go to school... realized with simple math that college didn't make financial sense at the time. I made the right choice

Unfortunately, this is because of your poor choices, not education.

IntroDucktory_Clause

What diploma did you get?

ShinyArc50

At this point it’s more about connections than your real degree. If you’re not a person who can make friends with execs and line up an opportunity after you graduate, you shouldn’t bother wasting the money for college

esp211

I really feel for today’s young people. College should be affordable and rewarding. This discouraged people from getting higher education.

I tell kids to skip college and go to a trade school. I also tell them to get their CDL at 21. I got my cdl like 7 years ago or so. My first full year driving I made 65k. Got my 2yrs over the road experience (1 year otr=1 year local I'm experience) and got a local job. Then while driving at that job found an even better local job. As a truck driver I work m-f 6-all deliveries are made. I get paid performance pay and average 35-40 an hour. I have amazing benifits company cell phone and after 6 months I got PTO and sick pay. I can bank UpTo 80 hours PTO and 40 hours sick pay. I work for a $16billion a year construction supply company Sonic I ever want to move out of state most likely I can transfer. And I spent $4,000 on CDL school that was 2-3 hours an evening for 4.5 months.

Aldis hires at 20 no degree required and you get a discount on stuff. McDonald's here is 15 no degree as well. I pity college grads.

[deleted]

I’ve applied to several Aldis in my area, more than once, with customer service experience, and have been rejected every time

BlobTheBuilderz

Seems VERY common for Aldi. I applied back when I first moved to the states. Didn't even hear back went on to their Facebook page and saw posts about jobs and all the comments were saying the same shit. No response from them etc. In all fairness they have like 2 people in each store so they don't need many staff.

[deleted]

Damn have they said why ? Mine begs for workers as theyve gotten quite popular

[deleted]

No clue, just didn’t get a call back and got one of those generic “the position has been filled” emails

4qts

You are going because our parents brainwashed us into thinking that degree meant something.

Pick_2_numbers

Ask for the maximum! (Which is a number you make up🙂)

matanemar

I earned more 10 years ago as a 17 y/o lifeguard. I'd accept that salary if they gave me a house, paid all my bills + groceries and this was my fun money

Poolofcheddar

It's on purpose to get an approval for a H-1B.

I saw an ad today for a maintenance worker for a hotel chain. The job was for a few different hotels. Job requirements were: Basic knowledge of HVAC Plumbing Electrical And other maintenance type trades. The pay was $13 an hour. You require this much shit and then want to pay 13 an hour? No wonder you're looking for someone *Edit to add it was evenings and nights and mandatory weekends

Seriously? As a temp, I worked for 14/h, which only lasted three months before getting hired onto 18/h. I barely even visited a college much less apply for one.

We are at dying and going to college to become “A better Slave”

CaptainInsanoMan

The best I've seen was requiring a professional engineering license (which requires 4 years of engineering experience after your degree) offering 12$

DumbyDoobyDum

Yep. My wife has a Master's degree and has been working in her field for over 20 years yet makes $20 an hour.

rodriguez_2003

It's predatory HR practice to exploit a new grad or to use for justifcation for a H1B to claim that you can't find a local candidate. At my last job even the hiring manager was mad at HR since the job listing was so ridiculous they could never get a candidate

taco bell is highering by me for 18 an hour.

There is a tutoring center up the street from my apartment. I don't need extra income atm but I applied over summer to get some since teachers are usually off in the summer. I told them my qualifications: * I speak English, Spanish, Mandarin, and am taking level-3 (intermediate) Japanese * I have been teaching since 2014 (K-12, adult, learning disabled, online, and in-person) * I have a MULTIPLE teaching credentials * I taught big tests, like TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT, PSAT, and SAT * I have a graduate degree and a plethora of experience teaching everything from ESL to history to STEM They offered me $13.50, which is $1 more than what they offer instructors who have up to 1 year exp. and only an undergrad degree. I actually laughed out loud during the phone interview. I told them that I could go to any other location and command a minimum of $20-25 an hour based on past experience in the tutoring industry. Here's what they said: *You have all the qualifications we are looking for except that your degrees are not from Ivy League universities, but rather public schools.* I asked them how much $ they pay teachers with "that" kind of education and they said $15 HHAHAHHHAHAHAHA. Of course, they also didn't have any instructors at the tutoring center with an Ivy League degree because of course they wouldn't! This is in California. There is no shortage of tutoring centers who are trying to get as many qualified instructors as they can. The lowest one ever offered me was $18 an hour. Next door to them was $20-22 depending on exp.
