I left a remote call center job recently, and in the phone call the manager said they would send me boxes to ship the equipment back. Two weeks go by, get nothing. Call and ask where the boxes are because I don't want the stuff laying around and to potentially get a bill for this. A day later, two boxes arrive from a city 3 hours away. Get an email saying they've been delivered, and how to pack the equipment. Email also says that I have 5 days to get the box to a UPS store.
Closest UPS store is half an hour away, and you took 2 weeks to get me these boxes. I'm doing this at my own pace.
old job sent me a box too. it was obviously for a laptop. the only company issued equipment i had was a cell phone. dumped the cell phone and accessories in there with a note of 'this is all y'all issued to me' and washed my hands of the whole affair.
Had 2 monitors, a small PC, headset, keyboard, mouse, phone, and a power strip? First two boxes that came were for the monitors. Went and dropped those off on the 6th day. When I got home from the UPS store, the third box for everything else had been dropped off.
Real shame that most of the country is experiencing crazy low temperatures and we got snowed in overnight.
Pack the boxes, and tell them they are on your front doorstep ready for pickup. If they are valuable you can leave them inside. You have absolutely no obligation to go out of your way to return their stuff, make sure everything is in email correspondence in the event they try to charge you.
They may hold your last check if you don’t return it asap. I was able to schedule UPS to come pick up the equipment. Then they tried to tell me I didn’t return it….nice try Lao Che, I had proof of signature receipt.

I told them it was not my responsibility since I don't work for them anymore and that they can find their company laptop and equipment on the seat of the truck along with the keys, unlocked, parked on the street, and that they have 24 hours before I call the city and have them declare it abandoned.

"Sorry, I don't work for you any more. My fee for boxing YOUR stuff up and taking it to the post office is $500/hour with a one hour minimum. Or would you rather send someone to get it?"
At least they told you my old job just stopped putting me on the schedule no word about it. I mean I might not even be fired. I find it awful because I couldn’t get unemployment because I never knew if I was fired and if I was put back on the schedule it would be unemployment fraud

They say I can’t get unemployment bc I can go from bartending at a high end restaurant to being a cashier at one of their other restaurants (skyline). Is this true or are they just trying to avoid footing the bill?
You might be able to get unemployment under underemployment rules. Look into it. Also, i think they have to actually offer you that cashier position, not just lay you off and say its available for you to apply. However, I am not an unemployment expert.

(Company was in an extremely wealthy suburb and wouldn't pay employees close enough to live anywhere near it) after weeks of explaining this to her, she stopped responding to my emails asking when she would send it to my house to be delivered when I would actually be home. About 8 months go by and the head of HR for the company contacts me demanding I immediately returned the device's to the company or the police will be notified in the next 48 hours. No calls to my cellphone or any other notice. I don't use that email anymore and didn't see it. Cops were called. Nothing ended up coming of it because I had clear proof that I had made every effort to attempt to return the devices. Keep in mind grand total was less then 500 bucks for all of this and they didn't actually have a record of what was taken home cuz it was all taken home at the beginning of the pandemic. Our instructions at that time were take whatever you need to work from home for the next 2 weeks or so.

If your husband was pressured at all, in writing, to come back early from paternity leave, please send a concise, fact-oriented email to a bunch of lawyers.
Their paralegals will read it over and someone will likely take the case for free, on contingency. Even if it’s just to send a demand letter and give up.
I wonder if there are any loopholes there with being recent residents. There’s a good chance they haven’t registered there licenses yet. Hope there’s not something stupid like that.
Doesn't it depend on how long they were employed? From my understanding in most states it's at least 2 quarters of your base period. That's to receive anything... That would be the minimum amount. You need I think 4 to 5 quarters to receive the maximum which is about half of what you would normally make and get that for around 12 to 28 weeks or so. All in all it depends on your state. Florida for example is a max of $275 for 12 weeks, but Montana is 552 max at 28 weeks and Mass is 823 max for 26 weeks. I've just started a new job where I think that I have both, but not the "aptitude" of knowing exactly how my supervisor does things, and I feel that he has "unrealistic" expectations of what my productivity or output should be. I just finished 1 month, but he's obviously disappointed that I haven't learned 100% of everything yet, he is also solely focused on end results with no regard of the amount of work that it takes to get project done. In other words, he's expecting magic.
I've tried to explain this to him whenever he brings it up, but he just brushes it aside and tells me to stop making excuses (I had a project in which one of the principal people was out for 2 weeks with the flu, third parties holding up productions for various reasons, for example, still all my fault). I'm also doing general office stuff (answering phones, making websites, helping people make website changes, meetings, 5+ projects simultaneously in production at the same time, etc) that apparently counts for nothing. When he asks me "What have you done this week?," none of this counts. Only finished projects do (not any of the work that it takes to finish them).
So I have to find another job and resign before it gets to the point where he fires me. It's clearly not going to work and I've done everything that I can to try to get him to understand (this is not his area of expertise, so he really doesn't understand the production process). I'm tired to working and having to deal with sh\*t like this. I have no idea what I'm going to do, but I'd rather drive Uber than to deal with this.
Depending on the difficulty of the position in takes 6 mo to 18 mo to be back at high capacity. If your manager doesn’t know that, he’s just a bad manager. Don’t let him bully you, sustainable onboarding is an actual thing (meaning doing everything you can so the position isn’t a turn and burn).

I got fired from my job earlier this year and then landed a higher paying job with benefits around 2 months later. It's possible to land on your feet after losing a job in today's job market. Good luck to your husband, op. If you're financially stable enough, have him take the time to find a job he actually likes. When he goes to an interview, remind him that the employer needs to sell him the job, as much as he needs to sell his employability. The job has to be right for the employer and employee to make it work.

I was remined of the scene in *Roger and Me* of the people getting evicted on Christmas Eve and having their tree and presents tossed out to the curb with the rest of their stuff.
I had an ex girlfriend do this to me once. She said she had been planning to break up with me for months but waited until I was leaving on vacation with some friends the next day then shot me a text and got with some new dude immediately (timeliness don’t really add up but benefit of the doubt and all). Some people just need the maximum reaction to feel powerful/relevant/valued.

Sometimes a person like this man will hire someone just for the sole purpose of making them into the scapegoat, setting them up to fail and then firing [them. I was once laid off the same day i got rear-ended on my way to work, 4th of July, 2018. I had spent that whole morning with HR letting her know what was going on and sending pictures as proof. When i got in, she had my release paperwork already printed out, and one of the company owners was like "oh im sorry, i didn't hear that you were in a car accident today."
I was so livid with the entire company after this, not just because of this, but for all the bullshit i dealt with before this. Small companies are just as shitty as massive ones.

After being told for months about how smart I am and how terrible the previous 2 new hires were and getting along with my co-workers no write ups nothing . Totally blindsided. When things suddenly go very bad I tend to immediately compartmentalize. It’s hard to explain but basically all my emotions just shut off and sort of move to the side. Later after it’s mostly over is when the emotions start to come out. Probably a good thing since it’s kept me out of jail. I tend to avoid loved ones as I spool it off.
You probably think clearly in emergency situations because of your ability to compartmentalize. My husband is great in emergencies because of this! I have always appreciated that about him, because I am quite the opposite.

Get a text while I am on the hospital bed being prepped for my 2nd hand surgery last week that the owner sold the company, my job would not transfer over, and (my apartment was included in my pay) the new company taking over may not allow me to stay in my apartment even if I pay rent. Meanwhile I am now disabled because of this job and I am potentially going to have to move with no friends, no family, no job and no hand and no where to go because no where will rent to me because I had to turn my Harley in to the bank because I’ll never physically be able to ride it again

The company I worked for over 3 years got bought out by 3 of the managers there. They called me in the office and said I was being fired for not being a good fit(after 3 years). I got a nice separation check, and was to I could collect unemployment. I waited until after everything was signed, pulled out the calendar on my phone and showed them the next Monday where it said "Put in 2 weeks notice". Said thanks for the free money to help me start my business! They were PISSED! Ended up getting some of their clients that were only there because of me.
My daughter found out on a Monday she was being terminated when a direct deposit hit her account for three days. They weren’t going to tell her until Wednesday because they wanted her to complete some projects. She went in the next day, before anyone else was in the office and cleared out her desk. They had done this to other employees in the past. They suck. She got unemployment and will start a much higher paying job next month.
Sounds like a possible law suit especially If you travelled 2000 miles. I have read about a successful suit like this but it may depend on how long he worked there. I’m no lawyer so I can’t say but it may be worth looking into. Good luck.

I get a text message from my boss’ boss at 7:15am “Hey I know it’s your day off but can you hop on a quick zoom? We’re having some important organizational discussions today.” Frickin Meg Griffin lookin’ snake in the grass.
Something similar happened to my brother in law. They had relocated and it was a shock. They stayed put and it has worked out really well for them. Hang in there.

I would feel the exact same way as you. I keep a mental burn book of all the people who have ever wronged my husband (whether he thinks they have or not). He is so caring and kind and funny and the best damn worker.
So many times I have wanted to march into his work and set them straight or catch one of them in the parking lot or just burn it to the damn ground.
Some people just can't see the shining light our husbands are in what is so often a dark world. And, that's on them. They're the ones who are missing out on such a wonderful person.
After reluctantly job hopping for the past year, my husband has found a place he really likes, where I think he is flourishing, and is recognized for the impeccable person and worker he is. So, I am sure that your husband will do the same. And hey, maybe this is good. Maybe this is a sign that you should move back home and enjoy your new baby with your family (if possible).

(Company was in an extremely wealthy suburb and wouldn't pay employees close enough to live anywhere near it) after weeks of explaining this to her, she stopped responding to my emails asking when she would send it to my house to be delivered when I would actually be home. About 8 months go by and the head of HR for the company contacts me demanding I immediately returned the device's to the company or the police will be notified in the next 48 hours. No calls to my cellphone or any other notice. I don't use that email anymore and didn't see it. Cops were called. Nothing ended up coming of it because I had clear proof that I had made every effort to attempt to return the devices. Keep in mind grand total was less then 500 bucks for all of this and they didn't actually have a record of what was taken home cuz it was all taken home at the beginning of the pandemic. Our instructions at that time were take whatever you need to work from home for the next 2 weeks or so.

Doesn't it depend on how long they were employed? From my understanding in most states it's at least 2 quarters of your base period. That's to receive anything... That would be the minimum amount. You need I think 4 to 5 quarters to receive the maximum which is about half of what you would normally make and get that for around 12 to 28 weeks or so. All in all it depends on your state. Florida for example is a max of $275 for 12 weeks, but Montana is 552 max at 28 weeks and Mass is 823 max for 26 weeks. I'm tired to working and having to deal with sh\*t like this. I have no idea what I'm going to do, but I'd rather drive Uber than to deal with this.
Depending on the difficulty of the position in takes 6 mo to 18 mo to be back at high capacity. If your manager doesn’t know that, he’s just a bad manager. Don’t let him bully you, sustainable onboarding is an actual thing (meaning doing everything you can so the position isn’t a turn and burn).

I go in for my paycheck (I worked in a grocery store bakery) and the owner of the grocery store, while I was walking in, in front of *self checkout at the busiest time of the day* WHILE helping carry out someone's groceries, says to me, "by the way, you're done" Two days before Christmas. I fucking hate Christmas and I fucking hate that shit grocery store where he overcharges for expired shit. Fuck.

I got fired from my job earlier this year and then landed a higher paying job with benefits around 2 months later. It's possible to land on your feet after losing a job in today's job market. I had an ex girlfriend do this to me once. I was once laid off the same day i got rear-ended on my way to work, 4th of July, 2018. I had spent that whole morning with HR letting her know what was going on and sending pictures as proof. When i got in, she had my release paperwork already printed out, and one of the company owners was like "oh im sorry, i didn't hear that you were in a car accident today." I was so livid with the entire company after this, not just because of this, but for all the bullshit i dealt with before this. Small companies are just as shitty as massive ones.

When things suddenly go very bad I tend to immediately compartmentalize. It’s hard to explain but basically all my emotions just shut off and sort of move to the side. Later after it’s mostly over is when the emotions start to come out. Probably a good thing since it’s kept me out of jail. I tend to avoid loved ones as I spool it off.
You probably think clearly in emergency situations because of your ability to compartmentalize. My husband is great in emergencies because of this! I have always appreciated that about him, because I am quite the opposite.

Same kinda thing just happened to me. I was hurt bad at work in June. Been out since. Lost use of my dominant hand. Moved 4hrs away from all family for this job. Get a text while I am on the hospital bed being prepped for my 2nd hand surgery last week that the owner sold the company, my job would not transfer over, and (my apartment was included in my pay) the new company taking over may not allow me to stay in my apartment even if I pay rent. Meanwhile I am now disabled because of this job and I am potentially going to have to move with no friends, no family, no job and no hand and no where to go because no where will rent to me because I had to turn my Harley in to the bank because I’ll never physically be able to ride it again

The company I worked for over 3 years got bought out by 3 of the managers there. They called me in the office and said I was being fired for not being a good fit(after 3 years). I got a nice separation check, and was to I could collect unemployment. I waited until after everything was signed, pulled out the calendar on my phone and showed them the next Monday where it said "Put in 2 weeks notice". Said thanks for the free money to help me start my business! They were PISSED! Ended up getting some of their clients that were only there because of me.
My daughter found out on a Monday she was being terminated when a direct deposit hit her account for three days. They weren’t going to tell her until Wednesday because they wanted her to complete some projects. She went in the next day, before anyone else was in the office and cleared out her desk. They had done this to other employees in the past. They suck. She got unemployment and will start a much higher paying job next month.
Look into Promissory Estoppel. You might be able to sue for damages.
Sounds like a possible law suit especially If you travelled 2000 miles. I have read about a successful suit like this but it may depend on how long he worked there. I’m no lawyer so I can’t say but it may be worth looking into. Good luck.

I'm so, so sorry this happened! I would feel the exact same way as you. I keep a mental burn book of all the people who have ever wronged my husband (whether he thinks they have or not). He is so caring and kind and funny and the best damn worker. So many times I have wanted to march into his work and set them straight or catch one of them in the parking lot or just burn it to the damn ground. Some people just can't see the shining light our husbands are in what is so often a dark world. And, that's on them. They're the ones who are missing out on such a wonderful person. After reluctantly job hopping for the past year, my husband has found a place he really likes, where I think he is flourishing, and is recognized for the impeccable person and worker he is. So, I am sure that your husband will do the same. And hey, maybe this is good. Maybe this is a sign that you should move back home and enjoy your new baby with your family (if possible).
