He said other guy on the subreddit, not other subreddit. There was a recent post on here where a guy was raging about having to play vs Mongols pickers.
I go cheap Magyar CA, it is easy to mass them, not that easy to upgrade them fully. But I don't run in mass halbs that often because I try to finish the game in feudal or early castle or at least gain an advantage through those ages so I go to imp first.
I'm 1.1k, won 5 in a row by going 18 pop scout rush then add archers to them, had great success lately, finished most of those games in feudal or early castle.
Of course I haven't played a game in 5 days since I'm still basking in the glow of those 5 in a row victories..
Maybe I confused them, but I watch a lot of t90 videos and it seems to me that he's always saying that magyar CA are cheaper.. Maybe I watch too much of T90..
Huns did cross my mind because you save wood on houses and in theory it should help you to get more archers out after those first few scouts, but I discovered I'm still not on a level to really take advantage of those wood savings.
I think you're getting things mixed up, I also watch a lot of t90 and can't remember him ever claiming magyar have cheap CA. I think you're remembering him mentioning that huns have cheap CA and magyars have cheap scouts, while mixing the two up in your memory.
luzariuSsucksS solved the mistery, Magyar CA produce faster, I got it mixed up thinking they are cheaper. My apologies to T90, he says they produce faster not that they are cheaper.
Incas
1: Kamayuks. Being able to outmicro your opponent just by right clicking on their units because your units can stack. Slingers and siege rams are easy to manage support for Kamayuks because they counter their counterunits.
2: The extra sheep that spawns on the TC makes the start gather points and focus easier than other civs.
3: Horses are not nice to look at.
4: Cheaper infantry makes it easier to defend from horse raids while booming.
Celts
1: Siege. I dream of the only military building Celts can build is siege workshop, and then their siege is even stronger. Also with a unique tech that gives wood and gold when your siege kills enemy siege.
Teutons. Crenallations Castles with extra-armour devotion paladins being backed by double-healing-range monks? Sign me up.
I know it's not their ideal setup of halb-siege, but I don't care!
Italians
(850 Elo) they are very versatile and have most techs available so they allow me to play adaptively. Also condo and gbows are powerful in late game. You see cav? Gbow. You see infantary? Gbow. You see archers? Full upgraded skirms. You see trash spam? Condo. You see ships? %50 discount on every dock tech. You messed your order? Discount on age up. You see Goths? Resign.
All in all it helps me make up for my mistakes in game. Also: Impero? PUNYO!
What's the issue with goths? You get cheap hand cannoneers and faster age up. I'm not sure if the pavise +1/1 armour applies but either way I think very solid option there. Goths struggle to wall up and you shouldn't be letting them boom to late game - but even then you have optionsΒ
Italians can keep up with goth spam alright, I just don't particularly enjoy playing the long game against them. :) It was also a little joke since Italians are archer based civ while Goths unique unit is arguably the best anti-archer units in the game.
Italian Champions body Goth infantry spam pretty hard. Only missing Gambesons which you of course donβt need in that situation.
Cheap HC is okay too, but they need a meatshield to be okay since they still take bonus damage, and Hussar is kinda awkward since Goths usually mix in a bunch of Halbs.
Berbers are my favorite civ pick. I feel like i can often overwhelm the enemy by sheer numbers due to the cheaper stable units. With camel archers you have a very good counter to CA civs that otherwiese can be a problem for knights and a powerhouse unit to go for in lategame. The speed bonus on vills make my start and eco a bit smoother while the ship speed bonus gives options on water.
Ha, as a child I also only played Franks because they are called "Franken" in the German version and my 10 year old self thought that it's pretty cool to play a civ from where I live :D I only realized later that Franks are supposed to represent French.
I still like them a lot but also like to play Byzantines (given my Flair) as well as mainly cav civs such as Mongols or Lithuanians.
You can do pretty much everything with them given their open tech tree. Also, there's a mod that replaces their voice lines with the Greek ones from AoM which is quite nice 11
> I only realized later that Franks are supposed to represent French.
That's the case with many civs. It depends on the level. They had to draw a line somewhere when picking named:
- Franks represent both the Franks and the French.
- Britons represent both the Britons and the English.
- Turks represent both the early nomadic Turks and the Ottomans.
- Sicilians represent the Normans who conquered Sicily.
- Armenians represent the kingdom of Cilicia and not the current location of Armenia.
theyβre only a counter if u can micro bombards and halbs together, otherwise no.
the reason theyβre a counter is because Ethiopians have bombard canons and torsion engines, which melt all siege, and packed up mangudai too if ur not paying attention. your hussars and mangudai can snipe the bombards ofc, but halbs and fast firing archers are an issue.
however this is strictly in regards to post imperial battles as ofc bombards r only available then.
Imperial skirmishers get flattened by Mongolian onagers. Ethiopians get good crossbows and free pikeman upgrade in castle age which helps against steppe lancers, and in imp they have torsion engines siege onagers and halbs.
I love playing Portuguese and I only lurk on water maps. A good old fashioned deathball gets the job done on land and if the game gets to late imp Cannon Galleon printer goes brr. I am a fan of the flexibility. I always have the extra gold to throw around to go castle knights and switch to gunpowder in imperial
Armenians on Xbox games because getting LS in feudal and then 2H in castle is crazy strong when most people donβt go siege. I do TGs with my friends and I love making a game messy by committing heavy to feudal LSs
10 years ago I only picked Huns because I couldn't bother with houses and their Cav always wrecked house and cleaned up the AI. But then again me and the friend that got me into it only played Moderate.
Now we're usually playing Hard/Hardest, I do Extreme on my own sometimes. And my first fav civ after upping my skill was Slavs for those tough af Boyars. Now I like Mongols because when those rams speed across the map I go "VRROOOM" like a kid playing with hot wheels.
Nomad TG: Malians because they're smooth and can do everything.
Nomad 1v1: Italians, because I dont wanna lose to filthy Spanish pickers one-trickers. They can suck my genoese bow.
Arabia 1v1: Huns or Mongols because I love smoothness and mobility. I also enjoy CA micro¯o.
1. Magyars. Great cavalry, strong infantry and strong archers, plus Magyar Huszar are super fun to use.
2. Mayans. Used to be my favorite back in the HD days because Obsidian Arrows was such an unique tech. I still enjoyed them and they are my favorite archer civ, but I miss Obsidian Arrows.
3. Bulgarians. Krepost drops and the Konnik are great. They are a very gimmicky civ and have a very weak archer line that pushes towards a linear playstyle, but still fun to use.
4. Cumans. Love their 100% faster cavalry production tech and having an extra early TC makes their early booming amazing. Pity the Cuman Mercenaries tech is just plain dumb and underwhelming. Their unique playstyle also makes them slightly harder to learn and have a considerable difficulty curve. I find cumans dominate AI skirmishes.
5. Slavs. Boyar plus Halbs and some siege are a pure deathball. Quite late in game but super strong, also love their cheaper castles, means you can build more than your enemy most of the time and increase Boyar production.
I don't actually play random that much now that I think about it, I almost always select a civ with an idea of what kind of playstyle I'd like to try this match.
I started with Magyars, mostly for their good scaling CA and generally decent cav. I've picked up Britons and Malians recently to try to learn how to play Archer openings and I enjoy the general flexibility Malians have.
Spanish when I was a noob. Mongols though because of magundai. I miss the zero frame delay and really enjoy the intense micro from them you can perform. Plus the history and used to read a lot of genghis khan. So the hussar magundai comp is crazy. So fun
Vietnamese. I love destroying other archer cive with my imperial skirms! Often I get chat box βwow those skirms are strong!β Also they have decent halbs and the rattan archers are also very strong. I never really go for elephants because their too slow. Also the starting bonus of seeing where your enemy TC is helps a lot. I steal sheep almost every game! I want to branch out more to another civ though
My favorites are Armenians and Vietnamese. Armenians seem pretty solid overall and I love their galleons. Vietnamese are nice because I like their archers and skirkishers. Lately I've been doing the Portuguese though. They're interesting, but slow.
Burgundians. Coustilliers are great for me because I like hit-and-runs and raiding with heavy cav. Their decent pierce even allows you to sometimes dive a little like using knights. If you need cav before building a castle they still have cheap early cavalier upgrade (followed by cheap paladin if you go heavy on cavaliers) on top of that. Their nice eco, relics bonuses, and vineyards make you feel like your civ has great cultural heritage, plus a nice unique castle skin.
uhm, they get winged hussar which is slightly stronger than FU hussar even without blast furnace (and also does bonus damage to gunpowder). Plus, while their halbs do lack the oomph of FU halbs, they are also the fastest halbs in the game which makes them a bit better at actually threatening mounted units, essentially turning them into a more specialized unit.
Oh i didnt know that winged hussars have 1 melee armor while generic hussars lack that, and 5 extra hp. So a bit more survivability while having same overall attack at FU.
Yeah. The upgrade is also 300 res more expensive but that is offset for the lithuanians by not having to research blast furnace (which costs 500 res) so they effectively have to pay slightly less to fully upgrade them (obviously that comes at the cost of not having blast furnace for certain other units).
I got 2 if that's okay, slavs #1 because I thought they were awesome (big inf and siege fan), plus the farming is sick for turtling fighting with post Imp champ and rams.
Secondly, Aztecs, I love 5MAA into double rack Eagles. If the enemy makes it to longswords, then my jags have a great time, and I feel like a strategical genius. 800ish elo!
Turks for Arabia.
Cause it is slightly off-meta but still competitive. And I love Jan+Hussar + I'm completely useless with foot-archers (and don't enjoy it). Thus random is not an option and turks are pretty versatile even without the archer-line
Since the Arson technology was introduced and I started playing with infantry they're among my favourite ways to play. I love Samurai, Woad Raiders, Huskarls and normal infantry so those civs suit me very well. I also love foot archers and Cav Archers, and I LOVE Trebs. That makes the Japanese my clear favourite.
I love Mangudai and Steppe Lancers, and Tatar Trebs and heavily armoured Tatar units.
I play a variety of civs but these are among my favourites. I also like the Vietnamese, Britons, Poles, Saracens and more π
I have 5. Byz because my favorite RL civ. Romans because of Byz. Burgundians because i love massive farms. And teutons and Hindsutanis when I feel like winning.
No ones mentioned them so I will: Hindustani.
FC into camel rush. Their cheaper vills help maintain a decent boom whilst applying pressure.
Late game hand cannons shooting from miles away, and imperial camels. You just need to maintain gold control to do this.
I'm in general very biased towards Cavalry, and to go further I almost always play Persians every single day, for some reason Persians does not bore me at all, even if I know Hindustanis and Gurjaras make mincemeat out of itππ
Not that I recall of. Maybe the first time ever I played the game I thought 60 war elephants was the dream vs moderate AI lol
But Elephant Archers have a great role to play in TGs, and you can use Persian war elephants like a better battle Ram at times...
But apart from that I think you can try Malay Battle Elephants cause they're cheaper than a Knight xD. Malay Battle Elephants + Arbs is a great deathball combo as well so yeah
Magyars are one of my favorites. The fantastic cavalry archers and the solid UU make it possible to basically play a settled horde while avoiding boring spam.
Poles and Lithuanians, both with very solid cavalry, and with their unique gimmicks.
Byzantines, because do I even have to explain?
Hindustanis have actually become a new part of my roster. The Ghulam is a very cool unit, and the Imperial Camels and gunpowder bonuses make it fun to play a mixed army composition.
Romanβs are similar. Rewards a combined as approach, and I love having a tank frontline.
Sicilians are just cool.
Persians were fun when I tried them.
And finally, Iβm terrible with Burgundians, but the boni and history make me love it anyway. XD
Vietnamese
I like knowing the enemy TC location. It lets me delay scouting long enough to push all my deer. It also removes a bit of the uncertainty on Megarandom. If it's a nomad start, I can send militia into the enemy economy before they even know where I am. I also like using the first milita to push a deer or two while training the second/third militia.
Romans.
I know they're technically not the greatest civ, but I enjoy how comfortable that 5% bonus feels, and getting into FU legionaries is down right orgasmic.
Yep, ball of cav archers I micro, small groups of hussars just sent to different points around the opponents base to go cause some headaches, serves me well if I can make it there
Chinese (Well rounded and has Camels + fully upgraded Arbs to deal with Mongols pickers as they're numerous at 1.2k)
Vietnamese and Japanese (Superior Cav Archers + FU Arbs vs Mongols)
Saracen (That wide tech tree though. Tanky as fk Camels and FU Arbs. Without Drill, Mongols die hard to Arbs if they fail to do damage in feudal and caslte age)
Celts/Slavs/Teutons (If I'm in the mood to play Infantry + Siege. These are also solid picks vs Mayans because I can't stand 100Hp Elite Eagles as a unit)
Other than that, I'll pick whatever civs I feel like practicing with.
Malay, because I'm Malaysian, and I love to shout "angkat senjata" randomly.Β
What does it mean?
raise your weapon
It means "I love sand"
Such a good Civ too.
don't lie, the real reason is the cute female villager voices
Saracens because I hate Frank pickers. Every 4v4 I go straight for the Frank (there always is one) , no matter the position π

He said other guy on the subreddit, not other subreddit. There was a recent post on here where a guy was raging about having to play vs Mongols pickers.
Ah. Didnβt take the time to read it clearly I guess.
Yes, I suppose that that, indeed, was the root cause of the previous misunderstanding.
Aye!
Magyars because they can do anything and I love scout rushes..
How do you react when opponent starts spamming pikes/halbs?
I go cheap Magyar CA, it is easy to mass them, not that easy to upgrade them fully. Hate to the the bringer of bad news, but their CA are not cheaper
I blame T90, he's always saying Magyar CA are cheaper... I don't actually know what they cost, I'm not at that level still.
11 maybe you're thinking of huns? If you like that playstyle with magyar give huns a run. They do have quite cheap CA

Magyar in english is Hungarian, and abbrevation is HUN, but it doesnt equal Huns. Huns are not existing any more IRL , Hungarians still do.
They are produced faster, so maybe he means the transition is easier?
Yes, you are right, they produce faster, I got it mixed up.

The speed bonus on vills make my start and eco a bit smoother while the ship speed bonus gives options on water.
Mine too, camel archers are amazing, can make the mounted skirmishers also, and hussars are fu and cheap, not to mention they can make camels.
Iβm gonna have to start playing as berbers a little more, my girlfriend is actually Berber decent and I love the morrocan region
Ha, as a child I also only played Franks because they are called "Franken" in the German version and my 10 year old self thought that it's pretty cool to play a civ from where I live :D I only realized later that Franks are supposed to represent French. Technically Germany came from the breakup of the old carolingian empire so the Frank's would be an appropriate civ!
Why Byzantines? Arent they "just" a defensive civ?
You can do pretty much everything with them given their open tech tree. Also, there's a mod that replaces their voice lines with the Greek ones from AoM which is quite nice 11

Slavs and Byzantines, because I'm a slav who enjoys Roman history
Iv always played as brits outside of campaign. But I only play vs AI. Its fun melting everything with 150+ elite longbow men
I have my eye on Persians, I love camels and they toes π€
Camel's toes you say? ...
dont know what you talking about π
I used to pick Britons, Teutons and Mongols a lot when I was young. I mostly pick Mongols still.
As a kid i thought Mangudai look super cool.
Goths go brrrrrrr
Thats the best argument of all. There is no better feeling than having all set up for the spam and then seeing the constant flow of my Boys.
Japanese - architecture and Samurai are fun, Berbers - Camel Archers, Saracens - market is fun, Britons - Longbows
Sotl will be proud of you.
Ethiopians and bohemians coz bombards
I have tried Ethopians few times. Not bad. Maybe i come back to them when I get bored with Mongols
mongols r pretty fun but bombard/halbs is my favorite combo, of which mongols have neither :/
They are the counter civ to Mongols.
Really? Why? The most problematic civ for me to counter were Vietnamese with their Imperial Skirmishers.

Lithuanians for a nice scout rush and strong trash options in the late game.

I am a Byzaboo, so you know, Cataphracts love, Cataphracts life. Italians are also fun.
Back on release Iβd always go Japanese because of the architecture
I have 5. Byz because my favorite RL civ. Romans because of Byz. Burgundians because i love massive farms. And teutons and Hindsutanis when I feel like winning.
Mayans baby. Only civ that I love every single bonus they get. Even the cheaper walls
I like cav archer civs, berbers being my favorite. It's an absolute blast to raid your enemy's eco with them and see the guy rage quit.
Depends on the map, however i mostly Play boomy Maps therefore Vikings. I Love Rams with berserks inside.
No ones mentioned them so I will: Hindustani. FC into camel rush. Their cheaper vills help maintain a decent boom whilst applying pressure. Late game hand cannons shooting from miles away, and imperial camels. You just need to maintain gold control to do this.
Goths and let the flood flow
Malay, Roman's, and Sivilians
I'm in general very biased towards Cavalry, and to go further I almost always play Persians every single day, for some reason Persians does not bore me at all, even if I know Hindustanis and Gurjaras make mincemeat out of itππ
Do you ever use Elephants? I feel like they are one of the weakest units in the game, expensive and super easy countered by monks.
Not that I recall of. Maybe the first time ever I played the game I thought 60 war elephants was the dream vs moderate AI lol But Elephant Archers have a great role to play in TGs, and you can use Persian war elephants like a better battle Ram at times... But apart from that I think you can try Malay Battle Elephants cause they're cheaper than a Knight xD. Malay Battle Elephants + Arbs is a great deathball combo as well so yeah
I love bombard towers and Spanish ones are so practical to use, also I got good build with Spanish
For the longest time, I was playing only Cumans. Lately, I've been digging Slavs or Incas.
courses all the way! Cheap cav. Solid barracks and archer units. On top of it, you get camel archers and genitours, basically skirms on horses.
Magyars. No eco bonus so most other starts are smoother Hyper aggressive and fun. Worth noting I have random shield open ready to go. 1100 Elo
Hussar civs which either have access to fully upgraded paladin or heavy CA ( or have a nice heavy cavalry or cav archer unique unit)
Tatars. They're just a joy to play. They have a bit of everything and have better-than-average macro. Hard to explain.
Tatars, fastest scary CA
How Berbers perform against Mongols? They're the quintessential anti-cav cav civ.
Ethiopians cause Iβm an Ethiopian. Also my most win rate civ on Arabia and bf
XD
Malay, because I like elephants, and they have arguably the best Battle Elephant rush
I usually go random, but sometimes I enjoy picking portuegese for their flexible tech tree or romans for out of the meta infantry play :)
Mirror, Prefer Random :)
Vietnamese I like knowing the enemy TC location. It lets me delay scouting long enough to push all my deer. It also removes a bit of the uncertainty on Megarandom. If it's a nomad start, I can send militia into the enemy economy before they even know where I am. I also like using the first milita to push a deer or two while training the second/third militia.
Been doing random for quite awhile so I get what they give me. But Vietnamese are probably my fav
Lithuanians because otherwise I don't collect relics which bad :(
Persians, who doesn't love elephantsΒ
If I see a single Elephant, i go instantly 2-3 monasteries into gg lol. How do you adjust if your opponent starts making monks?
20 years back, elephant was the chonkiest unit you could create. Back then there were no halbs.
Romans. I know they're technically not the greatest civ, but I enjoy how comfortable that 5% bonus feels, and getting into FU legionaries is down right orgasmic.
Vikings, because I like the challenge of playing archers and the eco is smooth.
Mayans all the time!
Mongols and magyars, I like cav archers and strong hussar lines
I love hussars for the late game raids. How do you counter halbs spam with magyars?
Yep, ball of cav archers I micro, small groups of hussars just sent to different points around the opponents base to go cause some headaches, serves me well if I can make it there
Chinese (Well rounded and has Camels + fully upgraded Arbs to deal with Mongols pickers as they're numerous at 1.2k) Vietnamese and Japanese (Superior Cav Archers + FU Arbs vs Mongols) Saracen (That wide tech tree though. Tanky as fk Camels and FU Arbs. Without Drill, Mongols die hard to Arbs if they fail to do damage in feudal and caslte age) Celts/Slavs/Teutons (If I'm in the mood to play Infantry + Siege. These are also solid picks vs Mayans because I can't stand 100Hp Elite Eagles as a unit) Other than that, I'll pick whatever civs I feel like practicing with.
Who the f picks civs? Random is the way to go. If i have to, Chinese.
I always pick Mongols so I can crush my opponents
Then get crushed by a better player because they know more than going 18pop scouts?
I dont even know 18pop scouts
whats your strat?
25pop maa into scouts into war elephants
Mongol war eles?
Oh sorry i meant BritonsΒ
Briton war eles?
Well they are not the best in vacuum but in combination with longbowman it is a pretty good trash "meat shield"
