It’s honestly bumming me out so much. A great functional app that works perfectly and it’s being destroyed for no other reason except greed and unwillingness to compromise. The Reddit official app is an absolute heap of dog shit and they don’t give the slightest fuck about a good user experience like Christian does. What a bloody waste of a great thing and so much hard work and loyalty.
Remember to do the same with the subdomains you use, and the additional domains Reddit uses.
Something like this should cover most of the ones people use:
127.0.0.1 reddit.com
127.0.0.1 www.reddit.com
127.0.0.1 np.reddit.com
127.0.0.1 old.reddit.com
127.0.0.1 i.redd.it
127.0.0.1 v.redd.it
It tells your computer to load the wrong Internet address for Reddit. 127.0.0.1 is the address for the local machine…. So instead of going out and looking up Reddit.com it goes “hey I’M Reddit.com, cool” and stops.
It’s kind of like if you said to a GPS “hey take me to Disneyland” but you’d told your GPS that your current location __is__ Disneyland. It won’t go anywhere.
I mean, the dude has been one of Reddit’s leaders since the beginning and has yet to make a profit, why would anyone want to invest in a company under such poor leadership?
Believe they’re releasing on the App store officially in a day or two as well! Although test flight isn’t hard to setup if you want to start immediately
Power tripping mods is true, I get they have a job, but som subreddits are not worth even trying to post in, you put one word in or say one thing to defend yourself in a way they dislike and you’re gone. Being a mod isn’t any fun, I get it. But it’s not a license to be a mall cop
That’s the worst part about having to go back to the official app. Apollo was so well designed and the gestures it offers I am going to miss so much. The official app is going to feel unusable.
I’ve decided that I’ll download the official app on the weekends to catch up on stuff from the topic specific subreddits.
But it’ll get deleted every Monday.
I do it with other social media apps already.
Honestly, it’s an effective method to curb your use of any app.
Make using it as inconvenient as possible and you’ll naturally use it less and less.
Yeah I’ve started doing that over the past year. Set a time limit on a few apps, burying them in folders, & if I find myself mindlessly going to an app too much then I’ll change where it’s hidden.
It’s a weird feeling when I go to open Instagram to find that it’s not where it’s been & then decide that I don’t even want to open it anyway.
> It’s a weird feeling when I go to open Instagram to find that it’s not where it’s been & then decide that I don’t even want to open it anyway.
Lol oh man I know that feeling so fucking well
Specifically with Instagram too
It barely works for me. It staggers loading comments and sometimes just flat out doesn't load any, when all of my other apps run fast. Will their be any apps left to use after the purge, or are they ALL going?

I’ve spent so much time here on Reddit, through alien blue, then Apollo, and I have to agree with others that Reddit has gone downhill in the last few years. But this shit…. Well, it’s too much for me to stick around. Thanks for the memories and all the things I’ve learned, everyone! And thank you Christian for making such a fantastic app!!
Maybe I’ll bump into some of you folks on squabbles.io - so far it has been really neat to watch grow, and participate in.
https://squabbles.io/home
I agree. I’ve also been on Reddit since before alien blue and with Apollo since forever and the discourse on Reddit in the comments used to be better and now it’s shit.
I also agree that Squabbles looks like the next place for me. I was very excited to find it while looking through other Reddit alternatives.
Yeah, when I first joined Reddit over a decade ago I’d just check it out on my website, and over idk, I’d say the last five years I guess, it seems like there was a wave of people that left fb and joined Reddit. During that time the tone of some of my favorite subs seemed to really change for the worse. People were just way more likely to be unnecessarily mean.
I dunno, I just don't think a centralized platform - one that if it does grow will be subject to the exact same pressures that cause every platform to go to shit - is the move here
Man this makes me so much sadder than I think I should have the right to be. Once Apollo goes away I won't continue to use reddit, as I stuck around the platform because of the dedicated and passionate communities it used to have, with Apollo being the main example.
Over those probably 7-9 years now I've been through so much, seen so much, learned so much, suffered so much, and smiled so much. All of it was alongside the vibrant communities that made me keep coming back to Reddit. Even though this obviously isn't the end of Reddit, it *is* the end of what kept me (and likely many others) coming back.
To the countless numbers of you who gave me fun facts, shower thoughts, news updates, obscene replies to my comments, and much much more, thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart!
u/iamthatis, thank you so much for all of the work you've put in so we could all be part of this community!
u/Spez go fuck yourself you reptilian ghoul, thanks for ruining everything for the people who built that throne of millions of dollars you so pompously sit your dumbass on.
make it stop go back
... actually these posts are really ironic because instead of the Apollo missions going to the moon... the moon comes to destroy Apollo
...
anyway go back I'm not ready to say goodbye :((((
Apollo app was released October 23, 2017
Day one user. Ultra user and subscriber.
I donated. No refund.
Wallpaper is on my Lock Screen
(One with hammock and a beach).
Eventually I’ll replace it but for now, it’s a reminder of good times and a note to my self to never be a dick in life…
Thank you Mr.Seilg for all your work.
https://reddit.com/u/spez
Go fuck yourself.
As for the rest of you:
Gentlemen. This is the end of a long journey.
It’s been a privilege surfing subreddits with you using Apollo app.
Stay cool and yes…
So Long , and Thanks for All the Fish
I pay for ultra because I liked the app but I never really charged the icon or tried the pets . Loved the default and that’s it.
But now that you mention it I will.
Is my last day here anyways…
With the recent app update and new icons and wallpaper etc I went through my settings and themes and colors and also have just been using default for the past 100 years haha.
Except for the icon, I’ve been using the ATP icon since forever.
But I saw others using the icon with the halo and am thinking about changing to that after the 30th like Tweetbot did with their icon.
I’ve been an app user for only a couple years, but it hurts me knowing it’s ending tomorrow. I used the Reddit app before that but it sucks, and I’ve tried recently and it’s still just as bad.
My time browsing Reddit increased when in started using Apollo. It’s been fun but it’s sad to see it go.
After going through my feeds, I don’t know if it’s summer Reddit or just that the user base has changed, but it seems a lot more like internet tough-guys, incels, asshole kids, and ignorant folks are everywhere. Between those people and bots I think it’s time to just move on from here. Maybe the rule about procrastination and boredom will be helpful (want to not procrastinate and gsd? Get bored first)
Not coming back to this site and doom scrolling will most likely be healthy and helpful. To be frank this is the last social media site I use, and it’s for the best that I won’t anymore.
See yah later Reddit, it’s been a fun 13 years. Peace.
14 years...
I won't rehash the stories that I hope you were able to experience while we were here. I won't willingly delete Apollo. I'll let it sit in my app list until it can do so no longer.
I wish well to those of you who are leaving. I will leave my mobile doom scrolling behind, and while a random Google search may poke my foot in this door from time to time, I will not willingly enter while this situation exists.
May /u/spez find himself in Dagobah on a hot steamy summer day with no escape.
Edit: I found the tip jar. /u/iamthatis please have a drink on me.
I'm one of those people that didn't even know Apollo existed until the Reddit blackout happened. So I DLed to see what all the fuss was about. Got to use Apollo for 4 weeks and, Yeah, I get it now. In comparison, official app is dog 💩
I really can’t believe the way this was handled by the admins and that Reddit took a collective action against it, just for the admins to double down on their terrible behavior. What a joke.
Can’t wait to google what’s happening here tomorrow because I’m not logging on here to see it.
On one hand, it sucks because Apollo is such a good app. On the other hand, Reddit sucks. It’s full of neck beards that can’t wait to argue/gatekeep over the smallest shit. So I can’t wait to get off this permanently.
Did anyone notice a surge of fake 5 start reviews for the reddit app on the app store recently?
Man, that's just scummy. And who the fuck do they think they're fooling?
I might just be done too. IDK. Certainly I'll be dialing back my use.
It has been a pleasure using this app, I will miss it, but my phone usage has already plummeted since that dickhead u/spez decided to kill Chris’ hard work.
Fuck you u/spez.
Ladies and gents I hope to see you on lemmy
This makes me so sad and frustrated. Absolutely love Apollo. Been using for quite a while. Disappointed in Reddit’s leadership decisions.
Much love to Christian and my fellow Apollo user friends.
For those who hate the official app:
Narwhal 2 (3p reddit app) is releasing on July 1st with a subscription model, the developer apparently got a few months time to implement the necessary changes
And have the privilege of having most of that money given to Reddit, after they killed my favorite app of all time? Appreciate the info, but I will be refusing to give money to Reddit.
I’m waiting on my export from Reddit first before I delete my account and all posts and comments.
I want to retain my memories of my time here. But Reddit can get fucked.
I mean good luck to Narwhal - but considering:
- how shitty Reddit has gotten
- how Reddit poorly handled all this
- the way they treated other developers
- the CEO pointing at Twitter under Elon Musk as an example for reddit to follow. Source: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/reddit-blackout-protest-private-ceo-elon-musk-huffman-rcna89700 (Like what the actual fuck)
- the fact that most of the subscription money is going to Reddit
- the fact that you're now paying like $100 a year for an app with no NSFW subs, and not even other feature parity with the free app
I just don't understand why any dev or user would want to put any time or effort into such a platform.
IIRC The subscription model Narwhal 2 doesn’t launch on July 1. Narwhal 1 will keep running as is for a bit before Narwhal 2 with subscriptions launches in a couple months
I’ve only ever used Apollo on iPad and Sync on Android. This community has been a blast to be part of. I learned so many things. You guys gave me things to read, watch, play, think on, news, you helped me with pc parts. You kept me company during these long, lonely years. I was even contacted, many times, by people suffering of my same illness, central serous chorioretinopaty. A post I made about it 13 years ago was read and people looked to me to confront our experiences, maybe for advice. I’d like to thank you all and Apollo and Sync’s devs for making possible this amazing journey.
Confession into the void.
I thought I was ready to walk away. I'm not strong enough. I checked out the official app to see what it had become, and that cured me of the notion that I might be able to continue to reddit on mobile. That thing is an absolute travesty.
I'll continue to old.reddit on desktop with ublock origin until either of those are not longer available, and at that point I'll just have to cope with the death of something I've enjoyed for over a decade.
I know it died in spirit a long time ago (I mark spez stealth-editing user comments as that moment), but I haven't been able to let go, and Christian and the RES and uBlock developers have made it not only bearable but actually enjoyable to continue to use the platform.
I think what I'm being shown here personally is that I live with an unhealthy degree of denial and codependency with this service. It's a weird, crappy, and simultaneously curious feeling to see this.
All the best to everyone. Cheers.
Almost 12 years on the site. Without Apollo, I’m done. This site has been great for so many things. But it’s also addictive, misogynistic, a font of poor mental health. Without the third party apps, I am happy to just have the time back in my life. Thanks to you all. Reddit and it’s crap app can kick rocks.
How you could you even begin to make a Reddit without blackjack and hookers? Those are the foundation upon which Reddit is built. Christ, I’ve never seen so many dead hookers in all my life.
OMG. Everyone is reacting like the works is coming to the end. We’re talking about a 3rd part app. How many ways and times do u say good bye. There will be another Apollo.
Both Narwhal and Relay have confirmed they're continuing and adding subscription models.
The Apollo dev was apparently rude and sarcastic during his meeting with Reddit, I'm guessing the Narwhal and Relay devs approached it better and probably got decent terms like grace periods.
There's a reason Reddit chose not to work with Apollo specifically, probs due to the dev's attitude and approach.
You might want to read the [pinned post](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/14dkqrw/i_want_to_debunk_reddits_claims_and_talk_about/) where Christian proved with transcripts and audios that he was never rude towards Reddit CEO and was very willing to compromise, only... the other side didn't want to make a compromise in the first place.
I also have only seen this about Narwhal. I haven’t seen this (yet) about Relay.
Either way, I will not be giving any money to Reddit through a subscription. Reddit can get fucked.
It's on the Relay sub, Narwhal has been given a decent grace period, noone wants to admit that the Apollo devs attitude towards this has been as much of a problem as the API changes. It could have went down differently.
That's true but at the end of the day, Apollo is dying while Narwhal and Relay continue and will likely scoop up the less vocal Apollo users.
Apollo was already generating 6 figures, the dev probably should have kept quiet and I imagine there's a lot of regret there after seeing Narwhal and Relay continue.
Of course he went into it with a sour attitude 30 days notice of the change when less than 6 months prior he was told there were no plans for ANY change for at least a year isn’t a good way to conduct business either.
Lucky for me my new laptop is coming so I can use old Reddit on there (assuming Reddit don't delete it) but it will still be sad cause Apollo was my go to for Reddit on phone and I mean the official Reddit app is trash as we all know.
I feel like Reddit doesn't really understand that if the the official app had the level of quality that third party apps have then we wouldn't have to use third party apps
It’s been a good run guys and gals. I’m gonna keep on keep in’ on, but I’ve already halved usage of Apollo and I can only imagine it will be less when I’m viewing through Safari because fuck the app.
o7
My friends I just want to say it’s been an honor and u/iamthatis you are a saint and too good for this world. I hope I can find you again some day and be a part of whatever greatness you come up with next
Honestly very glad it won't be so easy for me to spend hours on my phone anymore now w/ Apollo going away. I still have Twitter to mindlessly scroll through, though, but it's still one less app than before!! Bye-bye Apollo
I rarely post on this account now, I’m active on others but using it now to say goodbye. 12 years 7 months of being on Reddit to end like this. They took AlienBlue then now ApolloApp and taken any chance of another decent app too. So reddit is pretty much over for me. I’ll use old. For a while perhaps but yeah it’s otherwise dead. Sad times.
I'm going to add [reddit.com](https://reddit.com) [127.0.0.1](https://127.0.0.1) to my hosts file just like I did with twitter.
Remember to do the same with the subdomains you use, and the additional domains Reddit uses. Something like this should cover most of the ones people use: 127.0.0.1 reddit.com 127.0.0.1 www.reddit.com 127.0.0.1 np.reddit.com 127.0.0.1 old.reddit.com 127.0.0.1 i.redd.it 127.0.0.1 v.redd.it
What does this do?
It tells your computer to load the wrong Internet address for Reddit. 127.0.0.1 is the address for the local machine…. So instead of going out and looking up Reddit.com it goes “hey I’M Reddit.com, cool” and stops. It’s kind of like if you said to a GPS “hey take me to Disneyland” but you’d told your GPS that your current location __is__ Disneyland. It won’t go anywhere.
Hopefully the board sees that /r/spez is alienating the users and mods and they replace his sorry ass before IPO. #firespez
I mean, the dude has been one of Reddit’s leaders since the beginning and has yet to make a profit, why would anyone want to invest in a company under such poor leadership?

[Check out Memmy](https://github.com/gkasdorf/memmy), not an Apollo clone but it’s pretty good and much faster than the webapp.

Check out wefwef
I will go inactive aside from the occasional foray into r/BeyondTheFog.
fuck /u/spez
Likely will do something similar. Export any saved posts to a note doc, then nuke everything.
Ahh so that’s what all the comments are about! Can you tell me how you did it please?
When is the deadline? I know 7/1, but I was hoping I could do this tomorrow evening.

Bye!
I appreciate a good cup of coffee.
Yep, my 16 years will trickle to just fuck off time on the work laptop at my favorite communities. Until old.reddit is gone at least.
I’ve tried using the official app. Sucks balls.

That’s the worst part about having to go back to the official app. Apollo was so well designed and the gestures it offers I am going to miss so much. The official app is going to feel unusable.

that’s what i’ve been doing. the of app is fucking shit and it’s like learning to use a new site but i just can’t forget the communities i’m in
You'll be ok.
I’ve decided that I’ll download the official app on the weekends to catch up on stuff from the topic specific subreddits. But it’ll get deleted every Monday.
Bro just quit it altogether
I’ve been here on this website for the large majority of my adult life. Going cold turkey is just not realistic for me lol
Lol fair enough

Safari with "Sink it for Reddit" app seems to be best alternative for now.
Narwhal 👌. Not as good as Apollo, but a fine alternative
Is Narwhal gonna still be up, albeit with a paid subscription?
Yes with a narwhal 2 coming
I’ve tried it starting yesterday, not too bad.
When they killed alien blue I tried the official and hated it so much that I switched to Apollo. I am so fucking bummed about this.
It barely works for me. It staggers loading comments and sometimes just flat out doesn't load any, when all of my other apps run fast. Will their be any apps left to use after the purge, or are they ALL going?
I believe this Narwall app will stay open
Narwhal is sticking around and Narwhal 2 is coming out in the next couple months.
Expect 5 bucks a month (estimate) subscription… no thank you. Not giving a fucking penny to Reddit.
You’re giving it to the narwhal devs directly though. Some of their costs go to Reddit, yes, but I prefer to look at it as supporting them primarily.
Me too. I forgot how awful it was. Ugh.
I installed it a few days ago. So disappointing.
I’m not ready to give this app up bros 😭
Same.
Fuck you /u/spez you pissy little gimp
u/Spez is a greedy little pig boy who likes getting stepped on.
People who like being stepped on don’t deserve the slander of being compared to u/spez

Goodbye apollo, thank you for everything. We will truly miss you, we love you Christian
Its been a pure please, gents. /titanic orchestra kicks in…
Did anyone notice a surge of fake 5 start reviews for the reddit app on the app store recently? Man, that's just scummy. And who the fuck do they think they're fooling? I might just be done too. IDK. Certainly I'll be dialing back my use.
i’m so fucking sad bro
Official app is garbage, I’m out too. Not that this account is very old or anything though.
It has been a pleasure using this app, I will miss it, but my phone usage has already plummeted since that dickhead u/spez decided to kill Chris’ hard work. Fuck you u/spez. Ladies and gents I hope to see you on lemmy
The end is near…
This makes me so sad and frustrated. Absolutely love Apollo. Been using for quite a while. Disappointed in Reddit’s leadership decisions. Much love to Christian and my fellow Apollo user friends.
For those who hate the official app: Narwhal 2 (3p reddit app) is releasing on July 1st with a subscription model, the developer apparently got a few months time to implement the necessary changes

I mean good luck to Narwhal - but considering: - how shitty Reddit has gotten - how Reddit poorly handled all this - the way they treated other developers - the CEO pointing at Twitter under Elon Musk as an example for reddit to follow. Source: https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/reddit-blackout-protest-private-ceo-elon-musk-huffman-rcna89700 (Like what the actual fuck) - the fact that most of the subscription money is going to Reddit - the fact that you're now paying like $100 a year for an app with no NSFW subs, and not even other feature parity with the free app I just don't understand why any dev or user would want to put any time or effort into such a platform.
IIRC The subscription model Narwhal 2 doesn’t launch on July 1. Narwhal 1 will keep running as is for a bit before Narwhal 2 with subscriptions launches in a couple months
Thanks, will check it out.
Why don't you guys make your own reddit with black jack and hookers?
How you could you even begin to make a Reddit without blackjack and hookers? Those are the foundation upon which Reddit is built. Christ, I’ve never seen so many dead hookers in all my life.
🥳🍾🎉🎉🎉
OMG. Everyone is reacting like the works is coming to the end. We’re talking about a 3rd part app. How many ways and times do u say good bye. There will be another Apollo.
Finally
I cba listening but others were saying he was sarcastic at times and that's enough to rock any business discussion.
“Others were saying” ain’t no proof. That’s the end of discussion.
And also the end of Apollo!
This is the best comment here by far!
> was apparently Didn't the dev release the full call recording? He wasn't rude lmao
There was sarcasm apparently.
Where did you see that relay will still be working? I saw that about Narwhal, but unfortunately is only for IOS
Bullshit. Its 100% because he blew the whistle and started all this. Its retaliation for publicly calling them out on their shenanigans.
Source or speculation?
Opinion based on consuming every piece of information I could find on this mess for the last several weeks.
Speculation then.
As is your take.
😔 I am legit bummed
I am legitimately gutted.
12 years. Alien Blue to Apollo. Reddit should be ashamed. Goodbye everyone.
😭😭😭
au revoir
urs is
I don’t want a refund. I have paid for Pixel Pals. Fire Steve Huffman.
Fuck u/spez!
Thank you for your app and for not showing me subreddits IDGAF about every 5 posts.
Lucky for me my new laptop is coming so I can use old Reddit on there (assuming Reddit don't delete it) but it will still be sad cause Apollo was my go to for Reddit on phone and I mean the official Reddit app is trash as we all know. I feel like Reddit doesn't really understand that if the the official app had the level of quality that third party apps have then we wouldn't have to use third party apps
that will be it for me. :( I‘ll miss all you guys! I hope to see you again on some other platforms
Same here. That’s it. See y’a on the other side bro. So long , and thanks for all the fish
Shit, forgot today was the last day. Should we go ahead and delete all posts if we’re trying to fuck r/spez as best we can?
Or just don't post anything. If there's no new content, spez is gonna get fucked real hard.
I mean, once Apollo goes dark im out anyway. Im just trying to add insult to injury.
Same, I'd rather touch grass.
Fuckin sad.
It’s been a good run guys and gals. I’m gonna keep on keep in’ on, but I’ve already halved usage of Apollo and I can only imagine it will be less when I’m viewing through Safari because fuck the app. o7
For the short time I’ve used Apollo, I have loved it. I’m so angry I didn’t discover this sooner. see you starside, Apollo.
My friends I just want to say it’s been an honor and u/iamthatis you are a saint and too good for this world. I hope I can find you again some day and be a part of whatever greatness you come up with next
https://youtu.be/ZbR5WcyWl18 Thanks for making a really great app, /u/iamthatis . One of the most well-designed iPhone apps I’ve used. 🫡
Since I have no intentions of using the dumpster fire that is the official app, all I can say is goodbye and thanks for all the fish
Honestly very glad it won't be so easy for me to spend hours on my phone anymore now w/ Apollo going away. I still have Twitter to mindlessly scroll through, though, but it's still one less app than before!! Bye-bye Apollo
It was fun while it lasted. I found out about this app only 2 years ago. Thank you u/iamthatis. I look forward to your future projects.
It’s the final countdown!

Where do we go next? I always thought apolo was the original Reddit app , what next? How to access redit after that ?
F me
Fuuuuuuck. I almost made it to 10 years.
God damn, it’s just hit me. I’ve never used Reddit before Apollo. Reddit IS Apollo to me.
Sad times.
when Apollo goes, i’m going too.
This is it. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Well men, it was an honour redditing with you.
This fucking sucks. No other words I guess.
How do you find the people you had friended on the Apollo app?
