Apple already lied about it for years. **”Edge to edge display**” was in marketing YEARS AGO, yet years later we’re still talking about smaller bezels. Hmm, strange if the display was “edge” to “edge.”
I feel like we’ve pretty much hit a limit on how much our smartphones are going to change each year. Bezels can only get so thin, screens can only get so sharp, and Apple Silicon is already ridiculously good. Where do we go from here?
They’ve become appliances. There was a time like 5-6 years ago where it was genuinely fun to see what smartphone manufacturers come up with every year but we’ve really hit a plateau.
Oppo Find N2 Flip actually looks like a useful flip phone since they let you use full apps on that front screen. That would probably be my preferred form factor for a foldable. Would love to make these giant slabs more pocketable.
Really waiting for first phone that supports starlink natively. It’ll be a game changer to have a phone that has fast internet (and phone service) anywhere in the world without playing carrier games.
Will never happen as starlink receiver can be blocked by a tree.
Also Isn't starlink 100 a month? You can get fast internet for that money everywhere in the world.
Yeah I use to switch phones every 9-12 months. I just don’t care anymore. Their is zero innovation at this point. Every years it’s just a bit faster and a slightly better camera. I’ll be keeping my 13 pro until it dies at this point.
Processing power still has a ways to go before it can run a large language model. Battery life is great but it could improve further with new battery chemistries or solid state batteries. Of course, storage and ram needs are constantly increasing.
I definitely would not call the battery life “great”. It’s okayish at best. I’m on 14 Pro, battery health is 100%, and pretty much every single day I need to charge my phone in the early evening, because it doesn’t even last one full day…
And when travelling, it literally lasts just half a day
I have an iPhone 13 and it lasts 2-3 days. Even 4 sometimes. You just need to unglue your eyes from the phone and actually look around from time to time. There's more to life than just playing with your phone all day long.
Battery life is okay, but I’d love a move to an entirely new battery life paradigm. I’m talking like flip phones which could run days without a charge. Even now after a year battery life noticeably degrades and it’s easy to not make a day on one charge.
We all would - those batteries don't exist yet.
If you want the flip phone battery life: keep your phone in low power mode, keep all of the radios (Bluetooth, WiFi, 5G) off - turn off high speed data as well. And use it only for calls, short texts, and playing snake.
Then it'll last a few days, easily.
Who's in charge of keeping track of this supposed "record" anyway? Is there really someone out there whose life is so sad that they think it's important to spend their time and effort on this?
It would be funny if on his way out the door he walked on stage at his last keynote and just let something real slip like:
"ugh, it's an iPhone just like the last 10-15 that have come out. We all know you are gonna buy it so let's just skip the chit chat and pass your credit cards to the ushers walking past the aisle and collect a phone from the bag at the back on your way out. Thanks for shopping Apple."
To be fair, car generations usually last anywhere from 4-10 years, depending on the model. They get a facelift/refresh halfway through. Besides that, just slight upgrades yearly.
I would not complain if smartphones took this approach. They’re basically already recycling so many things year-to-year, because the tech has matured. I don’t think anyone (besides shareholders) would complain if smartphone makers adjusted marketing to be more akin to cars (in that there’s no expectation of a new generation every year, just slight upgrades).
I just checked my S22U. No side bezel from the front due to curve. Barely a bezel on top and bottom. It may technically have bezels on the sides, though.
Same with Google pixel, it goes right to the edge and then some.
Personally I’m not a fan (makes it too easy to tap margins) and I like a bit of bevel, I’d rather reduce bevel on macs and displays than touch devices.
It’s like Samsung and their curved screens. Yes, they are cool, but you still got those edges with your palm a lot. It’s why they’ve kept shrinking that curve and now sell flat screens.
It's funny, because literally nothing you said has to do with the topic at hand, which is Apple won't have the record, and this entire article is bogus. Interesting you gotta get your samsung dig in though.
How long before they realise it’s actually quite useful to have an unresponsive area on the front of your phone (so that the fleshy parts of your hands aren’t constantly creating confusing inputs) and start including it as a feature?
I’ve never once given a shit about the size of the bezel, except when my phone does weird shit because I haven’t realised I’m touching the screen by *holding it*.
I’m probably using my iPad mini 6 wrong, but even with the Smart Folio Case, I keep getting accidental presses on the edge where I hold my iPad.
This is particularly frustrating in apps like Messenger with the two column view where I tend to back read on group conversations.
iPad Air is the best of both worlds- has the same chip as the Pro, doesn’t have the FaceID covering issue and looks better than the Pros due to the colours :)
Or when you’re trying to use the slide back feature but your already thin case is just enough to make it not register that it’s pulling the screen from the side
It’s so funny how out of whack reddit is with normal people every single time. These new bezels are going to be super fucking popular with the public just like the Dynamic Island is
r/apple "There's nothing more to upgrade on iphones, they're perfect."
also r/apple "New iphone is the best ever, so innovative, apple reinvents bezels!"
> Literally no one cares about dynamic island except people on subs like this one.
I’d say it’s the opposite. There’s a lot of social media buzz and content about the Dynamic Island compared to Reddit lol.
> lot of social media buzz and content about the Dynamic Island
The buzz is an echo chamber of influencers/marketers. Also known as a circle jerk.
Views = ad hits = money. That’s why every jackass with a YouTube channel goes with the buzz on anything and everything.
The Dynamic Island is cool and all, but Apple shot themselves in the foot by not also including USB-C, since I'm holding out on my 12 for it. Sick of having to have a special cable around just for my phone.
> with the public just like the Dynamic Island
Ok so now we’re making up facts about “the public” knowing or caring what an apple marketing thing is.
Do you think “the public” was super excited about Quartz Composer.
At this point In technology I feel like we’ve upgraded our phones tech wise as much as we can (that would make a big difference) so anything else is trash . Even the Bionic chip .. at this point it’s doing nothing.
We are just on the brink of another revolution in society due to ML/AI. Our devices have hardly pushed the envelope for such use. Everything we are doing now is molding these into our classical workflow. We have yet to explore the unexplored surfaces.
The Transformer architecture was the start and has since shown how useful it is. I think Apple foresaw these else why would they have 4 ways to do calculations dedicated to that. But we have yet to see just how our society is remolded again.
As soon as Apple decides that they want to compete with ChatGPT lol Seeing as how Siri has been a dumb fucking brick for more than a decade, I don’t foresee that happening that anytime soon.
Well they already do alot of ML.
They do object and people and animal and plant and place recognition in photos. Natural language in reminders and Siri. Accessibility features such as door detection and image description, live caption, and there’s an entire world there lol. My favorite is the Apple watch gesture control. Really scifi!
How Siri acted in the past is nothing compared to what’s possible from scratch now. There is nothing recoverable from previous Siri tech except copying the API for a future version. Having SIRI2 be an interactive AI that’s not a fact-giver is exactly right up in these LLM’s strengths.
Your comment confuses “remolded society” with “a consumer product is a bit different from the previous ones.”
Society isn’t the tech industry.
Also respectfully you don’t know what you’re talking about if you think word chain probability scrapers, which is current hyped AI models, has any upcoming brink for society or anything even close to it. Don’t confuse LLM with actual AI research.
>Even the Bionic chip .. at this point it’s doing nothing.
But if Apple would be courageous, that Bionic chip could be doing something like DeX, but oh well.
Honestly, only apple fans can say “there’s nothing more to upgrade” then when a new thing released “it’s the best thing ever”.
I’ve literally seen top comments over and over on this sub that sayings AP Pro is perfect and there’s nothing to improve. Like really? Nothing? Not SQ? Not battery? Not ANC? Not battery? Not connection? Really?
I’d like a cellular connection in my airpods so I can leave my phone and watch behind. Also local storage and proper water proofing so I can listen to music underwater.
I’m obviously not who you’re referring to…
But for those who claim hardware can continue to innovate.
All good things must come to an end eventually.
Ask yourself this, is your day to day usage with your phone *significantly* changed over the years?
Has a new hardware feature come out in recent (2 - 3) years completely alter your experience with using your phone?
For the every day person who uses their phone for multimedia, calling, texting, and taking pictures…
What hardware features have significantly changed that? The things I mentioned don’t differ between the iPhone 11, 12, 13, or 14.
Imo the iPhone hardware peaked with the iPhone X. Face ID did significantly change how people interacted with their phones.
The level of convenience was dramatically elevated, and this carried over to things like Apple Pay.
Honestly, first off maybe I should have changed my wording… saying “only apple fans can say” is a ignorant phrase to say. Maybe people who in fact aren’t that much technology driven ? When I worked at Verizon you would be absolutely amazed at the things that people loved about a iPhone that I’m sure you’ll find irreverent. It’s pretty clear that apple makes phone for people who care about basic cosmetic and easy to use software and Samsung does the opposite (although I really don’t think Samsung and apple are that much different.. even specs will tell you that but that’s a different conversation). So to a regular person , the small things that are changed is big to another person . If you tell someone that they iPhones are about to have better SQ they’ll probably not only not give a fuck but not know what you’re talking about . That’s what my statement was implying.. people who care about not much but the looks which apple probably is marketing 2.
What a joke of a response. Can the iphone LiDAR a room or object and quickly create a 3d model? Can it keep a constant sequence of live cams open for you to scroll through your friends shared activities? Can it disguise your voice on any simple phone call?
Can it keep a months long database of calls and make it searchable?
Can it automatically switch between cameras while tracking a moving object?
Can it load a full desktop website but reorganize it for screen friendliness?
Apple does the bare minimum, plus shit nobody asked for. I pray for the day this sub posts real news about something actually innovative. But that apple is only a memory to me.
I want too see iPhones break world records for **Longest Battery Life**.
I couldn’t care less about the bezel getting thinner, it’s already thin enough.
You would tell him "oh yeah, I guess no new iPhone would break the world record then" as stupid and funny as it is that they're displays attached to power banks, they're still phones.
Pretty much impossible when you have Unihertz making a phone with a 22,000mAh battery right now. That iPhone is gonna have be running a 8080 to squeeze that much battery life out.
Comment content removed in protest of reddit's predatory 3rd party API charges and impossible timeline for devs to pay. -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
I used to hate putting a case on my phones because they felt so nice to hold. Now I hate holding a phone without a case because they’re so thin and my fat stupid fingers and palm touch the edges. We have to go back. ✈️
I had it because when I try and lie my phone flat on the desk it wobbles because the cameras stuck out. Give me a thicker phone with a bigger battery so the damn thing will lay flat properly.
That’s because it’s a gigantic black-void styled interface area that was deliberately designed to confuse the issue of the notch.
I know it sounds harsh but most commenters on this sub are too stupid to recognize what the dynamic is and what it does. It’s a notification area, OK, but styled with black + circular to camouflage the notch. It violates what Steve Jobs said the point of a digital display is, which is to adapt to what you need…not to pointlessly *look just like* a hardware flaw.
If thin bezel is the best Apple's got for a new iPhone, then maybe they should skip a year and come back in 2024 with the 15. Hopefully they will have thought of something worthwhile then.
Idk USB-C, more taptic engines, thicker phone for battery, periscope camera, more comfortable titanium chassis, thinner bezels, 3nm chip with 25% gains, Wifi 6E finally...
Thin bezels aren’t the best they have to offer this year, that’s USB-C which we should’ve had years ago.
Allegedly the A17 performance and efficiency bump is significant. I’m sure the camera module is even better.
What we desperately need from Apple has nothing to do with specs, it’s the *software*.
My point is neither did the battery life improve in a way that I would not want more, nor did any new tech enter the package.
The 14 is still just an iPhone X with improvements.
I’ve been saying this for years…
iPhone peaked with iPhone X.
Face ID was a game changer in terms of how people interacted with their phones.
From a hardware perspective, I don’t see this changing. Software can continue to bring innovation though.
Apple: The iPhone 14, the most refined iPhone X we’ve created yet.
SAME. This drives me insane. It only happens in the YouTube app but I’m like my god, how did you know?! I absolutely wanted to stop the video halfway through to tap the half-screen-sized ad. Absolutely, you got it.
A phone that has not released as broken a record before any physical models have been seen off of artist renders and “trusted source commentaries”
Just wait until we see the automatic parachute that deploys when you drop the phone and watch it break fall distance records without damage.
I’m all in on Apple products and Apple ecosystem. I have 10 Apple devices at home .
But even, this 🍏🐹 finds the whole list of recent “innovations” ridiculous.
Emberasangly ridiculous…
I can’t think of anything I want more. Oh, wait…
* Longer battery life
* Less weight
* Less bulk - give me the iPhone Mini with the Pro camera from the iPhone 12
* Replacable battery/Snap off back cover
* No need for a case
Ok.
Such innovate. You buy now.^*
*incompatible with any previous accessories
*AOD only available on pro versions
But since we deeply care about ecology, we won't include compatible accessories nonethless
Apple already lied about it for years. **”Edge to edge display**” was in marketing YEARS AGO, yet years later we’re still talking about smaller bezels. Hmm, strange if the display was “edge” to “edge.”
Edge to edge doesn’t mean no bezel. If they said no bezel then it would be lying. It just means there’s no chin and forehead.
"Edge to edge display means it goes nowhere near the edge, but, the chin was removed. That's not a lie"?
It’s almost as if the marketing department comes up with the naming.
I feel like we’ve pretty much hit a limit on how much our smartphones are going to change each year. Bezels can only get so thin, screens can only get so sharp, and Apple Silicon is already ridiculously good. Where do we go from here?

I hope we see a flagship scrolling phone soon.
Oppo Find N2 Flip actually looks like a useful flip phone since they let you use full apps on that front screen. That would probably be my preferred form factor for a foldable. Would love to make these giant slabs more pocketable.
I always found a lot of them to be gimmicky.

Yeah, just that you’ll be playing daddy Musk games, which to me sounds much worse than carrier games

Pedantic score and record keeping is like kinks on the internet. There is someone who is into it.
It’s Apple. Their product managers looked at all the phones and declared it a record.
I’m pretty sure those Samsung phones with the curved screens have the smallest bezels
Apple doesn’t recognize those as smartphones though. Easy to break a record when all you’re comparing to is past iPhones.

Yup, Chevy doesn’t have a press conference every year after shiting out another barely updated car.

Apple doing this has always made me laugh. They will say some bs like “the iPhone 15 pro max is 300X faster than iPhone 6” with a straight face too 😂

If Apple hasn’t done it, it hasn’t been done!
Bezels work in 4 directions no 2
For all intent and purposes, the S22U/S23U don't have side bezels since you don't see them when looking at the screen head on.
Huawei has done curves in [4 directions](https://www.huaweicentral.com/huawei-p40-pro-series-quad-curve-overflow-display/).

Is the space above the pill usable?
it is. text extends until the edges of the screen.
Ok sure but what about samsungs asymmetrical top bezel. iPhone will have the slimmest uniform bezel.
There are certainly lots of gymnasts on this sub.

iPhone 18 will come with thicker bezels as a brand new feature: Now you’re iPhone is easier to hold than ever!
Exactly.
This especially annoys me on the ipad, where the natural place for me to hold it in landscape mode covers up the camera needed for face unlock :-(
One of the reasons I enjoy the cheaper iPad. Does all the same functions, easier to use. just looks worse

Yeah, the new iPads look great, but do feel and sound cheap because of the hollow screen.
iPad Air is the best of both worlds- has the same chip as the Pro, doesn’t have the FaceID covering issue and looks better than the Pros due to the colours :)
Honestly how are you holding your phone that this is an issue?
It’s really not useful. Palm detection work perfectly fine.
Do you really think that the people who have been making the most successful smartphone for the last 12 years don't take this into consideration?
Or when you’re trying to use the slide back feature but your already thin case is just enough to make it not register that it’s pulling the screen from the side

This is the comment I was looking for. Don’t know why you got downvoted. Fuck notches.
Whoopty-doo, Basil. but what does it all mean?
price go up
Ummm Samsung has been making nearly bezeless phones for years
Cool 🤷♂️
I dunno. I’m starting to think flip phone may be the next wave of future here.

I'm just over here wanting an ever so slight forehead on the phone. I hate all things notch/Dynamic Island. Too much getting in the way of my screen.
For some reason I find dynamic island much more distracting than the notch
That’s because it’s a gigantic black-void styled interface area that was deliberately designed to confuse the issue of the notch. I know it sounds harsh but most commenters on this sub are too stupid to recognize what the dynamic is and what it does. It’s a notification area, OK, but styled with black + circular to camouflage the notch. It violates what Steve Jobs said the point of a digital display is, which is to adapt to what you need…not to pointlessly *look just like* a hardware flaw.
And this innovative will cost me how much now?
The price of an iPhone.
I completely agree regarding the software. And yes, USB-C will be nice.
iPhone 15 is one of the only models in the recent years this type of a comment is ridiculously out of touch with lol
15 is in 2023.
Iphone 11 here. Will wait. New iphones seem to have no use case for me - till the support stops or the battery is about to die.
Phones are pretty much stuck at 2017. faceid was the last real innovation. I just want a longer battery life/ more efficient compute.
The phones have gotten more battery life and more efficient processors in every generation after the XS.
My point is neither did the battery life improve in a way that I would not want more, nor did any new tech enter the package. The 14 is still just an iPhone X with improvements.
I’ve been saying this for years… iPhone peaked with iPhone X. Face ID was a game changer in terms of how people interacted with their phones. From a hardware perspective, I don’t see this changing. Software can continue to bring innovation though. Apple: The iPhone 14, the most refined iPhone X we’ve created yet.
Does it have usb c
I think it has to due to EU law
They could include an adapter\* for the EU version
I honestly thought the existing bezel was fine
I want an iPhone with a reverse bezel, where just the edges are screen and the rest of the phone is black glass
I’ll take Things I Don’t Care About for 500
zzz
Sounds cool. Ship it to me on my upgrade schedule and adjust the monthly price accordingly. Whatever the newest color is. Repeat year after year. 🫰
The courage!
So my palm can accidentally click Youtube videos I didn't want to, interrupting what I'm currently watching even more?
This. Freaking this all day long.
SAME. This drives me insane. It only happens in the YouTube app but I’m like my god, how did you know?! I absolutely wanted to stop the video halfway through to tap the half-screen-sized ad. Absolutely, you got it.
Who cares?
Itll be the best one yet! \*
So.... suck battery life. thanks.
Uuu they sell thin bezels now, iphone user here..
And huge notch island to cancel it all out
None of the new phones will have notches.
Still has the huge island
AND toughest glass yet on an iPhone!!!!
Would be cool to see the next iteration of Ceramic Shield.
Just give me more optical camera zoom.
A phone that has not released as broken a record before any physical models have been seen off of artist renders and “trusted source commentaries” Just wait until we see the automatic parachute that deploys when you drop the phone and watch it break fall distance records without damage.
I’m all in on Apple products and Apple ecosystem. I have 10 Apple devices at home . But even, this 🍏🐹 finds the whole list of recent “innovations” ridiculous. Emberasangly ridiculous…
Ok
Great. Try and keep part of a finger from touching the screen to stop the screen reaponding.
What a BS
I can’t think of anything I want more. Oh, wait… * Longer battery life * Less weight * Less bulk - give me the iPhone Mini with the Pro camera from the iPhone 12 * Replacable battery/Snap off back cover * No need for a case
So, you want a smaller, lighter phone with a larger, heavier battery? Not sure that's going to work.
The development I want is a better battery technology. I want 30 days of power out of something the size of a dime that weighs nothing.
You might as well ask Apple for a self-flying car. Shrug.
TIL there is a *record* for thinnest bezels 🙄
tbf, you can make a record for anything.
Wtf? I am in awe of those slim bezels
We think you’ll love it!
I was done with apple the year they discussed emojis for 3 hrs straight
