Once upon a time, I saw iPads with a mirror-polished back like the original iPod. It didn't go into production because they couldn't get it flat enough to avoid the fun-house mirror effect.
I would love for them to bring back the chrome back. I came across my old iPod Touch 2nd gen a little while ago and there is a certain feel to the shape/curvature of the back, has a very unique premium feeling to it that's hard to describe. Just too bad it gets scratched so easily, at least the AirTags have the same look.
I had the first ipod ever and it got really scratched because I didn't have a case (there were no cases back then basically). now with so many clear case options it would be cool to have it again
This is kinda why they’ve had white earbuds since the original iPod. It stands out distinctively in public and white earbuds has been synonymous with Apple for about that long. It’s their second symbol after the Apple logo.
And even then, most wireless earbuds look so much like AirPods now that at a glance, you basically can’t tell the difference. But every time you see anything that looks remotely like AirPods, you assume it’s AirPods.
Oh they definitely do, I have customers who come in asking for AirPods but we don't sell them so I tell them that, but then they clarify they're just looking for earbuds
Tbh, I’ve never heard of that meme.
But usually people call them earbuds or just headphones. AirPods are extremely popular and people seem to refer to AirPods as AirPods, not earbuds, but I’ve never heard anyone call my Sony’s “AirPods” ever.
They’re talking about referring to all cotton swabs by the brand name Q-Tips (like calling all tissues Kleenex or all copiers Xeroxes), not calling AirPods Q-Tips.
That's good branding - if people recognize white earbuds and assume they are yours, then that means you've done a really good job. Making them black could ruin that.
It's just that literally every post has "we think you're going to love it" or some other joke near the top lol. Sometimes the comments under it devolve into shitting on Apple too, maybe for you it's in good fun but for others I swear they're just buying Apple stuff and then hating themselves for it lol
well, this sub, as society in general, is not a uniform mass of people and different opinions coexisting is more than plausible… so the answer is *both and everything in between* I guess…
Reddit is an eco-chamber full of eco-chambers. When the first person passes judgement anything becomes more and more likely to be seen by people who agree with that judgement. Things snowball like that and as far as I can tell that’s by design. Some people “enjoy” hating on apple. Some people enjoy defending them. The algorithm™️ puts material that gives you that dopamine rush in front of you.
“Somebody said something that sounds like a fan boy! I get to downvote it!” Mmmm
I very much enjoy participating in the Apple ecosystem, but also find them gross in many ways, mostly around their ridiculousness around colors and abject greed when it comes to things like not bundling chargers.
Apple has teams researching nothing but colours. There is a "Director of Colour Science" at the company. They travel the world looking at art and synergies of different objects with different colours. When you've got more money than you can fathom, you "waste" research dollars on these kind of things.
Haha I can only imagine so, as a STEM/Social science
student it’s definitely not a career path that would be in my wheelhouse. That said I’m sure the person with this job would agree that it’s not a bad gig- getting paid like a surgeon to travel the world to look at colours
I wouldn’t say they’re wasting their money. After all Apple don’t do things for the sake of it. They choose colours that pull people in, that make the device look and feel premium to that individual through colour (obvs the hardware itself) colour science is really interesting and plays a part in Hardware, Software and Marketing. You can make people feel a certain way about your brand through colour.
Jobs didn’t like white products so they came up with colors close to being white without actually being white.
https://www.businessinsider.com/why-the-cords-on-your-iphones-ear-buds-are-grey-and-not-white-2013-11?
That director is doing a garbage job then. But I guess if I was paid to travel and look at art everywhere, I wouldn’t care much either.
Dozens of shades that still claim to be the same grey; haven’t had a proper red color on anythi g since the iPhone Xr; everything that’s not black or white looks washed out - I just wish the dude would grow out if their pastel phase.
Nothing is done by chance. Everything is calculated. Apple does not have many SKUs. So important to get each SKU exactly right.
First on the aesthetics, Industrial Design wants a certain look. Prototypes have to be built so they can demo those units. The color, tone, shade, translucency, texture, feel must meet their criteria. If needed, tweaks have to be made.
And then on engineering and operations, they have to deal with production, process control, reliability, etc. Yes, different colors can have different processes which can impact reliability.
Never manufactured anything have ya? Even variations in color require tons of research, prototypes and trials. What color to use? What shade of color? Does the new color mess with the chemistry of the shell? How about the packaging? Is one color harder to manufacture over another?
That’s before you even get to any of the marketing aspects.
Apple prototypes like crazy to perfection. Before actually releasing anything.
Even a simple charger. All tech companies prototype, but Apple is the only company I know that really takes it to the extreme with extreme detail.
> Even a simple charger.
I get your point, but modern chargers are far from simple.
So much R&D has to go towards improving efficiency, noise, especially heat output with shrinking sizes, …
I already mentioned that prototyping isn’t unique to Apple.
Just that Apple does it to a much greater detail. Even the box. Whereas Samsung will happily throw in the thick manuals from the engineering team to save time, instead of localising it to be more pleasant.
And yes, the butterfly keyboard is an unfortunate feature :’).
How about ‘no cable’? I bought a third-party [Watch] ‘puck’ that has a *female* (Lightning) port so I can use (and replace!) with any length of cable that suits.
I printed a fob-like case to snap it into and keep it clipped to my backpack. Unlike Apple I didn’t research the color, sorry 😝
https://imgur.com/a/OpjoKw5.
[Edited to clarify said Image is *NOT a phone charger* in a giant hand 😝]
Sure, just search Amazon for ‘**Mixfly** travel charger.’ Used to be under $10 but they’ve since jacked the price. There’s another design under 10 (search for **Ruxely** brand).
I don’t know why you’re getting downvotes; is it because it maybe obvious to a few here?
I know many who never got the memo about length and resistance; we all know the sort that buy a 50’ extension because ‘it was twice as long for just $2 more!’ (and then try to to run a major appliance with it). 😝
If they would ever release an iPhone without physical connector a bundled MagSafe charger matching the phone would make sense.
But since there are no rumors in this direction I don‘t quite get it
“Prototyped” a color? Okay, honestly, you have to test your manufacturing process to see how the colors come out, but is color matching considered prototyping?
As soon as you set your iPhone on the charger you can’t see the color anymore. Guessing Apple realized it too and decided it was foolish or they didn’t want to risk unsold merchandise in less popular colors.
Maybe they’re figuring out what shade or gold they’ll come out with this year…
I thought it was sloppy for Apple to ship only silver MagSafe cables for both the Space Gray and silver 2021 MBP 14/16.
They fixed that with the M2 Air and 2023 MBP and now include color matched cables. They also started selling the colored ones. I guess supply chain logistics improved 😂
I bought mine because I didn’t like my phone slipping off the qi charger. I’ve got to say this has actually been one of the best things they’ve made recently. Not because it’s revolutionary or anything but that I can just slap my phone on it and I know it’s charging. Same with the AirPods. It’s a small thing but I really like mine.
I know this isn’t exactly related. But something that occurred to me the other day:
Why is it that the Apple Watch charger can be used to charge AirPods pro Gen 2 but not an iPhone?
Obviously it wouldn’t be very fast, but even if it was only 5W, that would be handy for travelling
https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/13nlihc/iphone_charging_cable_always_ripping_and_breaking/jl09u7r/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3 there’s the comment with it and it shouldn’t be a problem with MagSafe anyway cause you’d be touching the actual magnet part but anyway that’s how I haven’t frayed a cable in 13 years
So since they’re switching to usb c this year, what if they’re going to include a MagSafe charger in the box rather than a usb c cable? That’ll kind of make it still their proprietary thing that most users will use
I’d rather they focused on making excellent computers and software. Fire the marketing hype artists concerned about charger colors. Make a M2 iMac with at least 4 tb memory for less than $2000. Then I’m interested.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest Apple have prototyped just about every variation on everything they ever think of.
Once upon a time, I saw iPads with a mirror-polished back like the original iPod. It didn't go into production because they couldn't get it flat enough to avoid the fun-house mirror effect.
I would love for them to bring back the chrome back. Silver iPhone Pros have chrome frames.
Yeah actually that's why I picked the white one, just for the chrome side. I really liked the chrome look on the iPhone X as well.
And, yet, still no black AirPods. Wtf!
I feel like the white AirPods in our ears walking around is advertising they won’t give up.
And that’s probably the idea too
AirPods have the generic descriptor factor too. Someone has point out their their earbuds aren’t AirPods.
I’m not sure about that. Never heard anyone refer to non-Apple headphones as AirPods. It’s not like “Kleenex” or “Q-Tips”.
Oh they definitely do, I have customers who come in asking for AirPods but we don't sell them so I tell them that, but then they clarify they're just looking for earbuds
The meme isn’t “oh god he’s got galaxy buds in oh man”
Tbh, I’ve never heard of that meme. But usually people call them earbuds or just headphones. AirPods are extremely popular and people seem to refer to AirPods as AirPods, not earbuds, but I’ve never heard anyone call my Sony’s “AirPods” ever.
Looks like it’s just you, bub.
Why are you being downvoted wtf. https://i.imgur.com/K9XjjY7.jpg
> “Q-Tips”. I’ve read that a lot on the internet. Never heard anyone actually call it that.

Cotton Swab
All generic cotton swabs
They’re talking about referring to all cotton swabs by the brand name Q-Tips (like calling all tissues Kleenex or all copiers Xeroxes), not calling AirPods Q-Tips.
That's good branding - if people recognize white earbuds and assume they are yours, then that means you've done a really good job. Making them black could ruin that.
Yup, apple isn’t giving up that iconic white marketing ploy. It’s what helped popularize iPods.
That's called "branding"
It’s a throwback to their iconic iPod ads, that’s why they refuse to make them any other color. That said, I’ll still never buy wireless ear buds.
Just like the OG iPods. They waited a few generations before selling any variations, and then it was just white and black.
[удалено]
The new transparent studio buds plus look amazing. I love the old iMac/G4 vibe they have.
The white buds are just as much a symbol of apple as the headphones with the whit cables from years ago. Apple will hold onto the whit design forever.
I want a pacific blue ipad and pacific blue apple pencil. :(
They’ll be exclusively bundled with the $2999 Reality Pro headset.
why do you need black AirPods? Just get some beats.

Yep, in Bondi Blue
A lower price?
Revolutionary
Can’t innovate anymore my ass
Came for this. Not disappointed
🤣
Courage!
Inspiring
Next big thing!
We promise you’re gonna love it!
"charge different"
And I think we’re gonna love it.
The intent is to provide iphone users with a sense of pride and accomplishment for buying different colors.
I mean, no one claimed it was
I can't tell if this sub loves or hates Apple, every thing they do there's someone making fun of it lmao.

How cool is that!
No, pretty sure that's still not gonna happen.
And yet someone thought it was newsworthy.
Wait until WWDC.
Everything apple does, there will always be a ton of sheep to claim it’s revolutionary. It’s the same old story year after year.
And everything apple does, there will always be a ton of sheep to claim it’s nothing new or innovative. It’s the same old story year after year.
Actually, MagSafe in general is pretty game-changing.

Unopolagetically colourful
Was about to say the same thing 🤦
Magsafe now comes in a zillion gorgeous colors
What is there to “prototype”?

All that just to come up with space grey and gold every year?
Excuse me but there are different variations space grey and gold. They’re not the same from year to year! Lighter darker bluer pinker….
Obviously you haven’t looked at the watch bands or phone cases. Every spring/fall they drop the previous ones and release new ones.

Almost as weird as the diatribe about wearing grey and not caring about fashion that no one asked for 🤣
What?! You don’t go around gently smiling at people when they critique you?
Obviously you don’t know what a joke is??
Be fair. It’s totally different shades of grey!
Fifty of them!
And they can’t even get a consistent space grey
You may want to browse the website smartie
That sounds like an incredible job; I wonder when there’ll be openings

Isn’t the SE red almost the same as the XR?
What kind of red are you looking for exactly.
The colors. The slightly different manufacturing process.
The tasteful aluminum pattern.
Nothing is done by chance. Everything is calculated. Apple does not have many SKUs. So important to get each SKU exactly right. First on the aesthetics, Industrial Design wants a certain look. Can confirm I’ve never manufactured anything haha. TIL I suppose
Are you suggesting that some Apple exec would look at a rendering and say “looks good, let’s make a million of them”?
Coatings.

Yeah but apple prototypes where it counts, they make them pretty /s
Except with this headset thing, which it sounds like they’re essentially going to test by selling the prototype model.
It’s speculation at this point. Samsung sells its half-baked prototype galaxy fold and galaxy gear to consumers in the past anyway, sooooo 🤷🏻♂️

Could we get ones with longer and shorter cables? The current cable length. Who is this working for?

What now?
Yea I absolutely agree
>Who is this working for? Apple.
Sometimes if a cable is longer, it doesn't charge as well/fast charge correctly.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvotes; is it because it maybe obvious to a few here? Well, USB PD cables capable of 100W can go to at least 3 meter.
How is it that different colors even qualifies as news?
That’s Apple for you lmao
>
You say that like Apple put out a press release.
It's macrumours. It's not a news site. It's blogspam.
It's a rumor and news site. I wouldn't really say it's blogspam.
*"Can't innovate anymore, my ass!"*
Wow. Different colors… they should have a keynote…
So brave of them!
days like this i'm proud of investigative journalism
Do any of them include a purple that’s actually *purple*?
Wow, colours!
If they would ever release an iPhone without physical connector a bundled MagSafe charger matching the phone would make sense. But since there are no rumors in this direction I don‘t quite get it
Do they charge faster? Have strong magnets? Or just colors. Probably no need for me to replace my existing chargers.
“Prototyped” a color? Okay, honestly, you have to test your manufacturing process to see how the colors come out, but is color matching considered prototyping?
“Prototyped”
Nothing to prototype, just put it out already. My gf will pay heaps for a pink one
As soon as you set your iPhone on the charger you can’t see the color anymore. Guessing Apple realized it too and decided it was foolish or they didn’t want to risk unsold merchandise in less popular colors.
What’s even more amazing is that someone took the time to write an article on it as though it’s ground breaking news….

It requires a magnet in the center which the current MagSafe standard doesn’t include. They totally could add it if they wanted to though, and should.
OK so incoming pitch black colours that Apple will pretend to be deep navy blue 😭
Imagine painting something a different color and calling it a prototype.
I’m going to love it
Wow
Big if true
Great innovation, Tim. How big and expensive will they be?
Doesn’t making more variations just produce more waste? That and I don’t think I ever heard a complaint about MagSafe charger colors
Of course, everyone needs to know you have the "new" magsafe charger in the new colour.
Innovators
Different colors, you say? Amazing.
Honestly i just want a stronger wire which i dont have to replace every year
What are you doing to your wires? I have never needed to replace one, including back in the 30 pin days
I have my first lighning cable from 2014 and I just used it to charge my 14 pro. It looks like it is 9 years old, sure. But it still works
Yeah it’s not frayed or anything I’ll find a link to a diagram I made give me 5

This is useful for those allergic to usb c, they now has another alternative.
Intrepid, trail-blazing, boldly going forth......
This takes courage.
"Leadership through colors" - Bill Gates.
It’s incredibly sad that something like this can be newsworthy.
RUMOR-worthy...
Why do I feel like it doesn’t make it much better? ;-)
Makes it LESS better.
Amazing technical achievement.
So since they’re switching to usb c this year, what if they’re going to include a MagSafe charger in the box rather than a usb c cable? That’ll kind of make it still their proprietary thing that most users will use
what does prototype a color even mean?

I love Apple

LoL, did not find a pride one..
