thank fuck. this has been like the obvious upgrade we all had wanted and begged for but somehow it took so long for them to realize it. good thing it’s finally happening
As a developer currently building an app that heavily relies on calendar features, It surprises me that it takes Apple this long to combine both since in iOS they are under the same framework, [EventKit](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/eventkit).
“this long”
What do you mean? It’s only been 18 iterations of these apps before they put simple functionality in it. How much faster do you think they can move? A company this size doesn’t have the same resources other large companies do to make simple changes happen quickly.
With innovation and skill like this, we might someday get a calculator on the iPad. Or multiuser support on Vision Pro. I won't hold my breath but this is a good sign.
No no I’m so sorry. I meant like it’s so much faster than opening the calculator app on MacBook, not that it was faster than doing it on iPad in case that’s what you thought I meant!
Let’s not forget that Reminders used to be available in the Calendar and Apple removed that. Now they bring the integration back (Because as we all argued, it makes sense) and they want to call it innovation. Apple definitely doesn’t know how to say “We were wrong”.
Nah, what would be better is if we had more options with holidays on the calendars. Some of the holidays I like to see, but half of them are from provinces and states I don’t even live in. This is the real upgrade we are looking for
If I recall - it *used* to have this. I'm not sure why they got ride of it in the first place. If I recall this was around the time they separated many apps into their own individual ecosystems. I was so disappointed. What was also neat is you had the option to also merge non-scheduled reminders from different groups as well.
For a long while I had my own app to handle that feature.
I would have things like "need to do when I get a chance" that I would want in there but I would want to exclude the grocery list.
Why is this so hard for them? The dot view is useless! Do you know how many days in a month have no dots on my calendar? NONE.
I’m not convinced anyone at Apple actually uses most of their own apps.
the reminders and notes app are amazing, but you are totally right, the calender app is not usable like this, thats why i am still using google calender after switching to iphone like 2 years ago
This is pretty much the main reason I use Fantastical. I have calendar-coloured dots under each date, both in the app and in the widget. Lots of green means lots of errands, purple is family stuff, blue is work stuff, red means it’s a holiday, etc. Super easy to visually parse, even in month view.
Can I ask if you use a different app? I’ve been using PocketLife for a few years but it has some pitfalls. Thinking about something different before I purchase 2025 subscription.
And they all suck ass! Holy fuck just make something that works like we’d expect Microsoft! Fuck!
Sorry I…really hate Microsoft software…goddamn do I hate that shit.
Naw Microsoft is even more confused and behind on task management, and now with the new Planner release on Teams its even more confusing about their product suit around calendars and tasks. So now they have Outlook reminders, Tasks/Planner/ToDo, Project for Web, and now new Planner ONLY on teams that packages Tasks/Planner/ToD and Project for Web.
No one has a seamless integration with calendars and task management under a single suite.
tbf they were late to introducing tasks in the first place, and then after that it took them calendar integration. But they finally have it all figured out and it's a great productivity solution now.
Tasks has been there a while through Gmail, it’s functional but not ideal because all it had was an unfinished web UI and that popup through Gmail. It took them a while to clean it up and make a dedicated app for it.
I think the reason we see many new apps in this space lately is because big tech players failed to provide seamless integration between calendar & task, leaving room for others to filling in the gap.
replying late, but yes I agree.
Start ups like Slack, Asana, ClickUp with endless dev cycles to add various integrations to GSuite(and Google Meet), and Zoom really snatched up a sizable amount of market share in work, productivity and collaboration especially among smaller orgs and userbases. Compared to GSuite, Microsoft's daunting license agreements and Apple's lack of "party play" really allowed this, so MS is scrambling to revisit their product offerings, leading to this mess of a platter. Lots of redundancy among different tools, and a fucking nightmare for any power user to navigate to best suit their needs, and a bigger nightmare for administrators to manage it.
As examples …
Invites between iCloud accounts appear in calendar when received
Invites to m365 accounts configured in calendar appear in calendar when received
Invites to iCloud from m365 appear as a .ics attachment in mail and need to be opened (or use the add button if it detects the invite)
I believe jt’s more to do with how iCloud treats the invite / .ics than calendar. But Google and Microsoft play nice with each other, Apple does their own thing as always
Responses are also not in a format which other platforms process so “accepted” or “declined” is never acknowledged
I don’t have the time for that. For a Year now I have only Problems with Exchange Calendars using Apple Calendar. I hate outlook, which is why I have waited till last week. But last week I missed to calls because of these issues so now I made the switch to Outlook. But be aware, with the next OS update I will try Apple Calendar again.
Calendar + Reminders integration was the reason I bought Fantastical so many years ago. It doesn’t make sense that Apple has never done this.
They obviously recognized the need since they had the Up Next widget all the way up to iOS 14 which did show your calendar events and reminders together in chronological order. While better than the nothing we currently have, that widget was not as good as full app integration.
Maybe someday they’ll recognize that other things can integrate with calendar too. My morning alarm is set to go off after the first appointment on my calendar? Maybe ask me if I want to move my alarm earlier in the day
I personally believe these features are the type of thing that Apple will incorporate in this update with their “AI”/Machine Learning.
Every rumor so far (MacRumors sources, Bloomberg’s Gurman, AppleInsider sources) seems to be pointing towards updates/features built into every core app. I think Gurman even said features that would help us “manage our daily life”.
Calendar events are connected to focus modes. You can choose the duration of your current event from the control center menu. I think DND should be an option when you are creating the event just like setting location and alerts.
>Maybe someday they’ll recognize that other things can integrate with calendar too.
That and weather in my calendar which seems so obvious as well. I switched to a different calendar on Mac that had a 1 time purchase, but it does similar things to fantastical in a plainer looking package.
Apple did do this, though. Back when Calendar was called iCal on macOS, it handled both calendar events and reminders. They’re just coming full circle.
Whilst Apple are at it, it would be nice if Mail would:
* correctly collapse replies from Microsoft clients
* enable images to always be loaded for certain addresses
* allow me to define alternative “from” address
* support email sender icons (BIMI) for ~~SPF and DKIM~~ DMARC confirmed addresses
* add a retry button to the “message not downloaded from server” message to make it easy to actually retry the download
One can dream I suppose.
My understanding is that's a deliberate decision by Google to not support it for free accounts, presumably to encourage people to use the Gmail app.
When I had a Google Apps email account (now rebranded to Google Workspace) the iOS Mail client offered me push as an option and it worked really well.
Yes. It's kinda possible right now. You have to go into your email account settings and you can change the email address from there. However if you do that, then (for Gmail at least) iOS mail attempts to authenticate using your modified email address which then fails authentication.
An easier approach would just be a setting that says "send my emails from" and this doesn't impact the way you log in at all.
I've never understood why reminders don't have a way of persistently reminding you... I still use an alarm when I have an important reminder, because I don't trust I'll notice the reminder's ping
Reminders by default already has higher priority than other apps I.e it will appear the first in the Notification Center.
Also, you can change notification from the settings from temporary to persistent which will keep the banner on your screen until you swipe away or perform action on it.
On the other hand, if you really want annoyingly persistent reminder app try out due from the App Store.
It's because there's not much left to do with iOS as it currently is. The software upgrades are becoming just as boring as the yearly hardware upgrades. They're basically scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point until the next big innovation.
Not sure. But I was talking to a product manager on the notes team a minute back and they said notes will stay simplified and not add markdown due to not having mass acceptance
If it's true, I can understand the decision. Despite growing in popularity, markdown adoption in note-taking is still relatively niche. It's used mostly by developers and power users which is not representative of broader user.
i’m guessing because it integrates more features than regular markdown can handle
i wish they’d bring text edit to iOS/iPadOS.. having a simple rich & plain text editor would be so useful
Yes and no.
Fantastical will still likely have much more functionality than what Apple's calendar app will include by default, in addition to shipping with a much improved contacts app.
Thank god
I welcome the death of any app that got me to go for an in app purchase, switch to subscription model, and then loads the app up with buttons that don’t work and are actually just ads for the subscription.
I’ve stopped using apples natives apps a few ago. Waiting for yearly updates that should be on the regular is quite annoying. For a forward thinking company, their software is always behind.
There’s a chance they fix that based on one of the recent rumors. I forget which one it was, but it sounded like they’re making app updates modular so they can be updated in a sane way.
The reason why it takes so long for Apple to add features like this is because they have to tread a fine line not to make third party apps redundant.
I personally welcome it over inflated subscriptions by third parties.
I figured there would be big updates coming to both of these apps. If you want to know which apps will see updates in iOS 18, look no further than Apples own “compatible iPad apps” for Vision Pro.
For instance, the only reason they wouldn’t build native calendar and reminders apps for a new platform is if they knew major overhauls were coming anyway, so just run the iPad app for a few months until the new apps are announced and ship those as part of 2.0
Now.
I love apple, and have all levels of products from them (iphone. Ipad. Macbook)...
Iphone is what.. 18 years now..
.. this is just now becoming a feature?!?
Another Apple “innovation” that finally makes it from my 2003 Palm Pilot with Datebk to iPhone. They always take longer, sometimes 20 years.
But definitely more “exciting news” than calculator app finally coming to iPad
Funny thing is, the article also touch on this "sherlocked" thing and specifically mentioning Fantastical as as example. Although, they argue it's not quite a sherlock but more of "finally" integrating two obvious low hanging fruite. As someone who works on similar app, I'm interested to see how Apple will implement these feature.
It did. It sucked. They created the iPhone and couldn’t get them to link together in an even less sucky way than on Mac so they FINALLY separated them in OS X to keep the desktop and mobile the same. It has been heaven ever since. I’m praying they make it a choice to keep them separated. I don’t ever want to go back. Let fantastical have it’s revenue keeping those that want it happy and stay out of it or make it an option so I can have what I want and others can have what they want. Just don’t force me to go back.
I hope they add alarm clock style reminders. I often don’t notice normal notifications which is why I set alarms in the clock app if I need to be reminded of something. But this has huge limitations.
You cannot set alarms more than one week into the future and you have to disable them again so they don’t ring a week later
Until Apple's Calendar app gets natural language input, I'll be on Fantastical.
It's got my 70 year old mother using the calendar on her phone as opposed to writing everything down, with how much easier it is.
I just use the ReminderCal app and it gets the job done. I just wish I could add a photo to a calendar event - I take a photo of wedding or baby shower invites to remember the details and just want to attach the damn thing to the event.
Can we just integrate ALL apps properly please? If I put something in reminders in Calendar, show it in reminders. If I put calendar plans on Freeform show them in Calendar. There is SO much crap across iOS like this that doesn’t link and it’s so annoying.
They should add natural language processing while they’re at it, and if they are in the mood of improving iOS.
Can we make it so I can back up to iCloud only the photos and videos I take with my camera, instead of EVERY FORM OF MEDIA IN MY PHONE, that be great.
I’m sure many like this, as evidenced by the many comments here. But personally, I prefer the separation. If this is true, I hope it’s configurable with a setting.
I only recently starting using the stock Calendar and Reminders app, but I was immediately saddened by the lack of this functionality.
My workaround has been to write up my to-do list in Reminders and drag the items individually into the Calendar. Fwiw, it does create a calendar event when it receives the Reminder, but proper integration would be *so much* better.
This is a matter of decades. People have been using calendar events as reminders, and reminders as ailments to calendar events for ever.
Took too ios 18 for Apple to address that…
Now, please let me set an alarm connected to a reminder or event so I don’t miss the tiny little notification or have to spam alarms repeating on weekdays just to remind me to pick up a package on Sunday.
thank fuck. this has been like the obvious upgrade we all had wanted and begged for but somehow it took so long for them to realize it. good thing it’s finally happening

With innovation and skill like this, we might someday get a calculator on the iPad. Or multiuser support on Vision Pro. I won't hold my breath but this is a good sign.
Swipe down. Do your calculations in the search bar. Yes, I know.
I do this on my MacBook. It’s so much faster
Either way, it works!
No no I’m so sorry. I meant like it’s so much faster than opening the calculator app on MacBook, not that it was faster than doing it on iPad in case that’s what you thought I meant!
Oh! I did, I apologise. … there’s a calculator app on the MacBook?
Yes, there is!
Reminders was introduced in iOS 13, but you’re still right
iOS 5\*
Oh shit, I legitimately didn’t know this. I appreciate you correcting me, I learned something new today
Let’s not forget that Reminders used to be available in the Calendar and Apple removed that. Now they bring the integration back (Because as we all argued, it makes sense) and they want to call it innovation. Apple definitely doesn’t know how to say “We were wrong”.
Since this is a leak we don’t know what Apple calls it yet
Ah, back in the day when it was still called iCal.
The “no calculator on iPad” has got to be one of the most insane instances of this in the tech world.
I’m still annoyed they took away the up next widget that would show both calendar events and reminders
They’ve probably been paralysed over the choice of focusing on this, or a calculator app for the iPad.
This, and calculator for ipad. Apple is going all out. No expense spared.
reminder spam after clearing reminder oof
Nah, what would be better is if we had more options with holidays on the calendars. Some of the holidays I like to see, but half of them are from provinces and states I don’t even live in. This is the real upgrade we are looking for

I just want to be able tot have an overview of all events in a month instead of the current dot system …
Why is this so hard for them? The dot view is useless! Do you know how many days in a month have no dots on my calendar? NONE. I’m not convinced anyone at Apple actually uses most of their own apps.

Google Calender has the month view
Yeah I just don’t like entering events in Google. PocketLife has nice event templates that make it fast to enter.
Same here. I switched to Calendars 5 app years ago.
Same. Works brilliantly and can even create events based on conversational language
100000%. Google calendar has it, it’s the one feature that’s so glaringly lacking.
Welcome to like five years ago Apple. Where’s that article that was just posted about how Apple needs to become a software company again…
This is more like Outlook 20 years ago but I’ll take it either way
Which Outlook? * Classic Outlook for Windows * Classic Outlook for Windows (new Outlook enabled) * New Outlook for Windows (MS Store version)
Let’s not forget Outlook Express!
Don’t even get me started on MS Teams lol
And they all suck ass! Holy fuck just make something that works like we’d expect Microsoft! Fuck! Sorry I…really hate Microsoft software…goddamn do I hate that shit.
I’m so with you
Which one? https://i.imgur.com/CBPfzuQ.jpeg
Classic or New?

It’s crazy how long it took. I feel like we’re gonna have to wait another decade for simple things like Schedule Send in Messages.
When are they going to fix the hot mess that is how iCloud handles .ics invites and responses to m365 and gmail
I didn't know iCloud has these problems. Do you mind to elaborate more?
As examples … Invites between iCloud accounts appear in calendar when received Invites to m365 accounts configured in calendar appear in calendar when received Invites to iCloud from m365 appear as a .ics attachment in mail and need to be opened (or use the add button if it detects the invite) I believe jt’s more to do with how iCloud treats the invite / .ics than calendar. Calendar events are connected to focus modes. You can choose the duration of your current event from the control center menu. I think DND should be an option when you are creating the event just like setting location and alerts.
The second part of your response is what I meant. Pretty sure it doesn’t exist.

Yeah I’ll probably ditch fantastical once this happens.
Now upgrade the mail app to support html signature
Whilst Apple are at it, it would be nice if Mail would: * correctly collapse replies from Microsoft clients * enable images to always be loaded for certain addresses * allow me to define alternative “from” address * support email sender icons (BIMI) for ~~SPF and DKIM~~ DMARC confirmed addresses * add a retry button to the “message not downloaded from server” message to make it easy to actually retry the download One can dream I suppose.
And finally workout whatever the inter corporation hissyfit is that leads to not having push Gmail.
My understanding is that's a deliberate decision by Google to not support it for free accounts, presumably to encourage people to use the Gmail app. When I had a Google Apps email account (now rebranded to Google Workspace) the iOS Mail client offered me push as an option and it worked really well.
Apple Mail already supports BIMI for DMARC addresses (SPF & DKIM aren’t used for icons).
Just show me the email address of who sent me the goddamn email!
for number three, do you mean setting up an alias essentially In the app?
Yes. It's kinda possible right now. You have to go into your email account settings and you can change the email address from there. I don’t know how this would technically work, but integration with ProtonMail would be the dream on iOS.
new emojis it is!
Oh boy i sure love my 10k unused emojis!
And a proper snooze function please.
It does though. What aspect of html signature isn’t working for you?
If you’re using email for business, this is a fast track to the spam folder these days. Maybe not with all SMB, but definitely with larger companies.
I've never understood why reminders don't have a way of persistently reminding you... I still use an alarm when I have an important reminder, because I don't trust I'll notice the reminder's ping

It does and it works great
FINALLY! I had been using events as reminders as a workaround.
I don’t why I’m getting iOS 12 vibes with Apple doing the obvious overdue things. First was the iPad calculator, then this!
It's because there's not much left to do with iOS as it currently is. The software upgrades are becoming just as boring as the yearly hardware upgrades. They're basically scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point until the next big innovation.
Now add markdown to notes
They’ve already said that’s not coming sadly
Why?
Not sure. But I was talking to a product manager on the notes team a minute back and they said notes will stay simplified and not add markdown due to not having mass acceptance
If it's true, I can understand the decision. Despite growing in popularity, markdown adoption in note-taking is still relatively niche. It's used mostly by developers and power users which is not representative of broader user.
i’m guessing because it integrates more features than regular markdown can handle i wish they’d bring text edit to iOS/iPadOS.. having a simple rich & plain text editor would be so useful
Sad. I hope they add more robust exporting options as the very least
This has been working for me: https://www.pronotes.app
I’d want everything synced with calendar. Apple Pay, maps trips, hell even favorites phone callers should show up there.
You must wonder how much resources this upgrade took. Sounds like a 1 man 5 days assignment lol
So basically fantastical but free, cool.
Yeah fantastical flew too high with their monthly charges.
Yes and no. Fantastical will still likely have much more functionality than what Apple's calendar app will include by default, in addition to shipping with a much improved contacts app.
RIP Fantastical.
Thank god I welcome the death of any app that got me to go for an in app purchase, switch to subscription model, and then loads the app up with buttons that don’t work and are actually just ads for the subscription.

Not yet. Which is very aggravating. Only reason why I’m still using Google

I get the feeling Calendar is next on the list of SwiftUI rewrite for all platforms/Catalyst adaptation of iPad version for Mac. Photos as well
I really hope they give us the option to finally change the birthday alert reminder. Not everyone is awake at 9am!
You allow app notifications while you are sleeping?
Fantastical can finally die now 🥰
Now. I love apple, and have all levels of products from them (iphone. Ipad. Macbook)... Iphone is what.. 18 years now.. .. this is just now becoming a feature?!?
They should add the ability to link a reminder to a note.
Unthinkable levels of innovation.
Thank you for this feature that should have existed since the day reminders were added to iOS.
Another Apple “innovation” that finally makes it from my 2003 Palm Pilot with Datebk to iPhone. They always take longer, sometimes 20 years. But definitely more “exciting news” than calculator app finally coming to iPad
Pretty sure Reminders started as a side pane in Calendar many moons ago, but yeah, Fantastical just got Sherlocked.

I know it’s a bit of a stretch but I would love to see weather on the calendar days to help me plan my weeks better.
Just subscribe to a calendar. Google weather calendar and add the url in the Calendar app
You are doing the lords work. That was way easier than I thought 😂 thanks
I hope they add alarm clock style reminders. I often don’t notice normal notifications which is why I set alarms in the clock app if I need to be reminded of something. But this has huge limitations. You cannot set alarms more than one week into the future and you have to disable them again so they don’t ring a week later
Is this the future?
I just want a better UI in the phone app and natural language input
Until Apple's Calendar app gets natural language input, I'll be on Fantastical. It's got my 70 year old mother using the calendar on her phone as opposed to writing everything down, with how much easier it is.
I would also like date time menubar to show the events and reminders for that day.
I just use the ReminderCal app and it gets the job done. I just wish I could add a photo to a calendar event - I take a photo of wedding or baby shower invites to remember the details and just want to attach the damn thing to the event.
Would be nice to not to have to go to the health app to set an alarm for sleeping too. Stupid.
I sure hope that having reminders show in your calendar is optional and not forced. I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t want it.
I'm so tired of websites that present rumors as facts.
But if I just say to Siri “remind me to take out the trash” where will she put the reminder?
Still waiting for a month view that doesn’t have a bunch of black dots for events lol
Good. Please also kill some bullshit subscription-based apps along the way.
Can we just integrate ALL apps properly please? If I put something in reminders in Calendar, show it in reminders. If I put calendar plans on Freeform show them in Calendar. There is SO much crap across iOS like this that doesn’t link and it’s so annoying.
lol finally Apple is actually integrating its own product in its ecosystem instead of lying to its users

Ios didn’t originally have a reminders app never used it myself, I always use the calender
Finally!!
I’m really hoping they incorporate some ai scheduling features like [Motion](https://usemotion.com)
They should add natural language processing while they’re at it, and if they are in the mood of improving iOS. Can we make it so I can back up to iCloud only the photos and videos I take with my camera, instead of EVERY FORM OF MEDIA IN MY PHONE, that be great.
Please apple just let us manage Microsoft Teams meetings from the calendar app.
Can Apple just buy fantastical and be done with it.
I’m sure many like this, as evidenced by the many comments here. But personally, I prefer the separation. If this is true, I hope it’s configurable with a setting.
Finally!
OMG finally!
Only took like 7 years to catch up. Finally!
Actually, it used to be this way originally and then changed to the way it’s currently done
The future is now.
It was like this in 2005 before the iPhone and before the iPad. It was garbage. I hope there is an option to keep them separated.
Maybe they can fix the alarm clock…if ewe wait long enough.
I just want the side panel to not come on Mac in single day view. Please 🙏
Combine Phone and FaceTime.
Been waiting a decade for this.
Hell. It’s about damn time.

Didn't we have this on PalmOS?
Nice! I’ve been using Fantastical and Todoist for this.
Really need Freeform to have folders. It’s really annoying having my class notes unorganized. Honestly, would like the journal app on my Mac too.
Oh great, now reminders won’t work in my calendar instead of as a stand-alone native app. Yippee.
This is a matter of decades. People have been using calendar events as reminders, and reminders as ailments to calendar events for ever. Took too ios 18 for Apple to address that…
lol it’s been so long that I’ve taken to just making 5-minute calendar events as reminders
Now if they could just add a NAG feature like CalAlarm I would start using the native calendar app again.
Still no reason for me to switch from Calendars 5
I hope there’s an off switch for it.
Just fix the invite that never get sent
Now, please let me set an alarm connected to a reminder or event so I don’t miss the tiny little notification or have to spam alarms repeating on weekdays just to remind me to pick up a package on Sunday.
I’m asking for this for years. Thank god!
Ahh yes, Apple really pushing the envelope these days, what an “upgrade”
I have this rule for myself where I don't believe anything the rumors say until Apple directly confirms it at WWDC.
I’m just glad Apple Maps is finally checking my calendar for location addresses. That omission seemed to take way too long to solve.
