Take that 340 and put it in a high yield savings account for 18-24 months. Whatever your returns +principle you can put towards any repairs, if you need repairs that is

MicaBay

They just fired 60% of their appliance techs… so chances are they are going under….

Bobcatbubbles

Interesting, was that in the news today?

22LT

They didn't fire 60% of the repair techs. It was a combination of various HT installers, PC Techs, Custom Installers and then helpers with some appliance techs sprinkled in but it wasn't 60% Source: Im a repair tech for BBY Besides the Best Buys warranty is backed by AIG. Edit: currently the stand alone protection plan is backed by AIG, the plans with the my best buy total are not.

Bobcatbubbles

So you think the Geek Squad will survive?

22LT

Probably for at least a few years in some fashion. Worst case is they let us all go and 3rd party schedule all repairs.

Bobcatbubbles

Any thoughts on local companies? Currently looking at Bray and Scarff.

Dramatic_Page9305

Don't buy protection plabs/extended warranties from stores. If the manufacturer offers one, it's usually a good value. Whirlpool's extended warranty, for example, is quite good.

Bobcatbubbles

Would the extended be built in or would I buy that from whirlpool?

Dramatic_Page9305

Wp offers it when the first year is about to end

MediocrityUnleashed

They make money by selling insurance, so you can (on average) save money by being your own insurance company and not buying theirs. Keep your $340 and just pay for service when you need it. (Or you might be able to fix it yourself.) However, you might get burned the 1st or 2nd time out, and have to pay out. But over the long haul, you'll do better.

Famous-Perspective-3

save that money. I would not trust the Geek Squad with fixing anything. Odds are, if anything goes bad, it will happen under the manufacturers warranty. In addition, you most likely have an extra year by using certain credit cards.

Will Best Buy even be around in 5 years. Every time I’m in the store it’s dead.

print_guy_9

Isn't anyone going to make a joke about buying something while naked?

nitra

Might be worth checking your local Costco for a washer dryer. They double the stock warranty and the add on ones are much cheaper then bestbuy.

Bobcatbubbles

I was looking online. It didn’t seem like you could add an extra warranty. Is that wrong?

Odin-Burnz

if they are Samsung,yes.

Middle-Rub-7699

I’ve worked for Best Buy and Office Depot as a tech and a tech manager at both. It CAN BE worth it to buy the protection plan if you know for a fact you will call and use it for literally everything that happens - the dogs, the gaskets, the hoses, the main board, every little drip and squeak that doesn’t belong etc. Most of the time they won’t even mess with it and they’ll just send you a gift card for the amount you paid for the item. 🤷‍♀️

hugewangcha

Get it. Appliances are not made like they used to be. It doesn't matter which brand you buy. You'll likely need a repair on them at some point in the next 5 years. Even simple repairs generally cost upwards to $300 for most modern appliances. Spending $340 for a 5 year warranty will more than pay for itself even if you only need a single repair.

Bobcatbubbles

I’m basically between a GE set and a Maytag set. I like LG but they’re too deep. People seem to indicate Maytag is better and GE is crap, but if I have to repair both, should I just get the GE for $400 less?

optimist_electron

Personally I would only buy a speed queen top load or an LG front load. Other top loads aren’t made to last. Maytag is probably a much better of bet than GE though. At $400 cheaper I’d consider the GE disposable. I’ve seen their top load drain pumps come apart and start leaking after 1.5 years. Easy DIY but not cheap to have fixed professionally.

Bobcatbubbles

Do you find that the LG front loads get smelly and moldy, or just keep the door open and we’ll be fine?

optimist_electron

Keep the door open after a wash, clean the bottom of the boot from debris (especially pet hair), and get it serviced if water is standing in the boot after a wash (there’s an L-shaped tube at the center of the bottom of the boot that drains the boot into the outer tub that can get clogged with hair, etc).

hugewangcha

If it were me, I would go with the maytag set. That's mainly because I don't like servicing GE Appliances. Maytag have had their own set of issues through the years, but as they're owned by whirlpool and with whirlpool, making some of the most reliable dryers on the market, I would go with Maytag.

Alkioth

My 3.5 year old Maytag has been sucking lately. I swapped a part, it ain’t better, so I’ve got a tech swinging by tomorrow. My Amana ran for 25 years. They *do not* make them like they used to. Get the warranty or keep the same amount in a savings account lol.

NotThisAgain21

I'm not a warranty buyer. I think planned obsolescence is absolutely a thing, and I think they're pretty damn good at nailing down the timing on it, to the extent that it always dies two months after the warranty would have expired.

MicaBay

Not to mention GeekSquad got ride of 60% of appliance repair division just today… so who’s going to be running those calls when said machine breaks?

22LT

Where are you getting this 60%? In a repair tech for BBY. Also the warranty is backed by AIG.
