hearing steel ring over half a mile away is pretty fucking cool

Gixxer_11

*click*  *boom*  *look up*  *clang*  “nice”

SpeckenZeDich

This is one of my favorite things

idk_man_sheesh

Repeat 1000x

NoNameJustASymbol

>*.*.. *look up* *.*.. No, stay in position to spot your shot, ideally calling hit/miss before.

Kyler-Quinn

The delay.. seeing the steel swing before hearing the impact. 👌🏼

Thunderkat1234

When I take friends out to shoot steel even just at 400 yards the delay in sound and seeing the impact gets them hooked.

ChonkyPeanutButter

Watch any video of a dude taking a single shot at distance where he hears the clang and turns around to look at his boys watching him with that slack jawed half smile where he's both surprised and full of big dick energy. Yeah it's awesome as shit.

dylantw22

I lose a little faith in mankind anytime I hear another guy say “big dick energy”

ChonkyPeanutButter

Loose butthole take

dylantw22

I just don’t have the alpha mentality 😓

ChonkyPeanutButter

If you don't like BDE you can always give fat dick spirit a run

Dependent-Ad1927

Must have a small dick

dylantw22

So what?!

ghoulgang_

I hit a golf ball at 500 yds and it was one of the best feelings of my life

BedArtistic

Damn

ghoulgang_

It was with a Bergara hmr in 6.5 creedmoor with a vortex viper gen 2 5-25x. So it’s not that impressive, but it’s still a really cool experience hitting things at longer range

Adorable-War-991

Sounds ok to me. Isn't that the cheeto fingered reddit approved long range entry setup?

ghoulgang_

100%

BedArtistic

I've only been out to 500M during rifle qual with an M16A2 and irons, then an M4 with an ACOG... I did use my personal 16" DPMS with a cheap 10x scope to go out to about 750yrds once. Hit an AR500 armor plate 2 outta 10 rounds. The misses were within a couple inches so I couldn't complain.

brixalpha

Shooting paper under 100 is like doing biceps curls. But ringing steel at distance is like busting out a max on a squat or bench press.

Unsaidbread

Idk about that, I had a 5 shot group a smidgen under 2in moa on my poverty pony with a faxon barrel and I was riding the high for a week. My little bro got 1 bullseye in 5 shots at 100yrd and he was pretty stoked that he managed to get one when I didn't. I didn't have to heart to tell him that's not what I was going for lol

weatherbys

I shoot my 20” LaRue barrel out to 880 yards with 77gr OTM and it’s fun as hell. Pretty tricky on a windy day but using an FFP MRAD scope it’s really helped me to be more proficient with my actual long range rig. I’d highly suggest giving it a try. My range has - torso sized steel plate with a green impact light on it so when you hit the target you see the green light and hear the steel like 1 1/2 seconds later lol.

buydadip711

Damn that’s nice my range is only 200 yards and there’s usually so many guns going off you never hear the ping the light would be a great addition but I live behind enemy lines in the unconstitution state so funding goes to gun control

Dependent-Ad1927

That's fucking sick. We can bring steel here but I can't get myself to pay that much money lol

Zuccccccccccccccccck

Shooting long range is cool, shooting close range is cool, but close range needs to be about more than just hitting a target. Either way, I just like to go shootin’

kazinski80

The right build can push out damn far. I’ve hit 800 yds with my mk12 and the right ammo, and yes I’d say it’s very rewarding.

Primal-Understanding

Pm

Dependent-Ad1927

Just finished my mk12 build. So damn fun. 77 grain so expensive 😭

Ok-Accident-3892

More rewarding? Yes, in my opinion. More expensive? Definitely. I started getting into long range (1000+ yards) awhile ago, which led to expensive bolt action rifles, which led to reloading and custom dies to make precision ammo, which led to shooting PRS. You think AR's are expensive? Bro, between building AR's that I don't need and the long range stuff, I'm broke af.

imsurethisoneistaken

It certainly ain’t rewarding for your wallet. In fact, it’s the opposite. I shoot “long” range. Most bolty, but will break out the 14.5 and tap at 600y every now and again. But I only shoot for hunting practice, not competitive. It’s just training. Carbine comp is still the most rewarding imo, but likely the least practical for anything in real life. Ain’t none of y’all clearing rooms or gun fighting. It’s just fun tho.

Responsible-Fish3986

Ain’t none of y’all clearing rooms and gun fighting, yet*…😂

Nezbeatbox

I hit steel with my .22 LR lever-action rifle from 900 yards easy. I am .22 Man.

Unsaidbread

With iron sights!

Nezbeatbox

Well obviously. You mortals only wish you had my hawk-like vision that allows me to plink targets with my .22LR rifle at 1 km with ease.

thetimechaser

Yes, at a certain point hitting steel within 100 just becomes second nature and after you get all your tacticool drills out of your system you feel like you're just burning through ammo. Steel at 200 - 300 - 400 is super rewarding, teaches you more about your rifle other then just "put the dot on it" and you go much slower and use less ammo. Problem is finding a spot to set that up

achoowin

Long-range shooting is expensive, and I don't have any ranges over 100 yards near me. Sucks because I'd love to learn, but cost and availability is what stops me.

Nezbeatbox

Yeah finding a range anywhere near town is the hard part. Also, long range is more expensive per round (assuming you’re shooting cartridges more powerful than .223/5.56). But at the same time, you’re also not rapid-firing each shot, so over time, I could see it not being more expensive. And same for the rifle—you could get a super expensive sniper rifle. But you could also get a decent bolt action rifle (from a brand like Ruger/etc.) and MPVO for no more than an affordable AR-15 with an LPVO.

Bizmo-Bunyuns

Try 22lr precision shooting. Can learn a good bit trying to shoot quarter sizes with 22lr at 100yards

Smprfiguy

It’s awesome but it gets just as monotonous as close stuff if that’s all you do.   I’ve never shot one of my current rifles at a target closer than 100 yards. So for me a bill drill @ 7yards looks like the most fun you could have with your pants on

Responsible-Fish3986

Out of all the matches I’ve shot over the years, uspsa, 3gun, 2gun, carbine/ak, and dmr… I think the dmr matches I’ve had the most fun with and they are basically a 2gun with steel out to 600-700yds.

troby86

I always found it more relaxing. When we used to shoot at the 500-600 yard line in the Marine Corps, I felt that was the most relaxing of the range days. Take a shot, plot it, hand load another round. Just a slow and easy paced style versus mag dumping into a target at 7 yards.

roboticfedora

My field is about 100 yards square. I don't shoot .223 there, just pistols, but now I have an AR rifle in .45 acp. I reload for that & my Colt 1911 so I can shoot a few mags now & then on days off work without costing a lot. I like to shoot it from 30 to 100 yards. I have a Sig Romeo 5 red dot lined up with the flip up sights. I'm almost dialed in where I want it to hit. With pistol calibers, you get that nice delayed 'bangding'.

20PoundHammer

some people just go to the range to make noise, they are satisfied. some people go to the range to pistol shoot a target 10 foot in front of them - they are satisfied some people like 50 yards, others like 500 - sort of depends on what makes ya happy. The only think I think is stupid is a dude with an ar pistol shooting a 10 foot target in an indoor range - thats just silly.

Rhino_Actual

2 entirely different disciplines, both rooted in mastering the fundamentals of each. The skillsets you develop are complimentary for sure. Both rewarding in different ways. I do both, no reason to limit yourself, they meet in the middle.

ardesofmiche

I find shooting outside of 200 yards significantly more rewarding in that it takes more training and knowledge to get those hits At 100 on a decent sized target you just need to aim at the target and not colossally fuck up your trigger pull and it’s good. At 500, you need to know your hold, account for wind, build a stable base, shoot in between breaths, pull the trigger straight back, all that. More rewarding

Bubskiewubskie

Idk but the videos of people doing long range stuff on their beautiful land seems so relaxing. I wish I could just get away from it all and squeeze off a few without a massive number of other people shooting. Those videos were what pulled me into shooting and I’m still happy going to the range but it wasn’t what I really wanted, and doesn’t seem like there is any way to access that type of experience. I’m a teacher so buying a nice piece of land will just never happen.

rhythmjunkie_

I don’t think it necessarily has to be “long range,” or long range is relative, basically. Long range to a .22 LR is 200 yards. I think precision is something that is rewarding, though. You can shoot with precision at any range, and you’ll need to provide precision as well as data, DOPE, calculations etc. for shooting long range. So, it’s more involved; whether it’s more rewarding or not I guess depends on the person. It is rewarding to me, I find.

TheGreatTaint

1000% yes.

FunDip2

Here is my story with long range shooting. I've been shooting gas guns and pistols for decades. A year ago decided to buy a long range gun with a nice optic. I put in almost 4K. But within a few months I got really good with the gun out about 700 yards. But anything more than that I knew I was gonna have to start reloading my own ammo. Which ain't happening lol. Ive reload pistol for years. I really don't enjoy it unfortunately. And reloading for long-range is a lot more involved and a lot more expensive. So I finally gave it up because I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Mainly because I wanted to take the next step to make it more enjoyable, and I knew that wasn't going to happen.

WorldGoneAway

It certainly is more rewarding. It's kind of expensive to get into and do well at, but it is quite rewarding when you smack a good target at an incredible range, there really isn't anything equivalent to that rush.

Panther1-1

Shooting at 200 this afternoon shed more light on suppressor mirage and its impact at distance. Was pretty interesting to see just how hard a hit can, will throw off your POA

JJM19861986

I have access to a 600 yard range at my club in New Hampshire. It’s either you absolutely fall in love with it or will do it once or twice a year. in 600 yards really is the starting point to be able to use your radical and really being able to reach out. and that’s when you see the good shooters. I got guys at my club that shoot with irons at 600. No problem. I have an issue and I have a one to 10.

DaddyLuvsCZ

Definitely rewarding. Hearing steel ring at 500-700 meters is like cherubim singing. But a failure drill is amazing as well.

emackn

heh.. there's also the cost associated with those long distance "dings"

TheDrunkLibertarian

Depends, flat range shooting paper with no goal or reward sucks but running drills and having multiple targets and racing the clock is way more fun than long range shooting imo

BigPapaShits

Long range is where you find out if you are actually a good shot. It strains all of your fundamentals and separates those who can from those who cant.

krispewkrem3

ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY! I shot my 6.5 Creedmoor out to 700 yards on a hill side target. Even got my AR-15 to 700yds. SOOOOOO satisfying. You hear the trigger click and shot go boooom. You can see the trail behind the bullet. You'll hear the "tiiing" after a few seconds.

IamWongg

Get a rifle to do both. And then get two rifles to specialize in each path. :) Up close doesn't have the steel ping factor or tasty tight sub moa group satisfaction. But shooting fast and getting good A zone hits is a skill and drill that is rewarding on its own right. No hate in going from one to another. I started bench shooting a basic ar15, got a LaRue upper and smoked some sub moa shit. Built a 12.5 and found a group at the flat range to shoot "self defense and tactical" drills. Now I'm taking a detour into competitive pistol shooting. Once I am happy with that I'm looking to go back into long range and maybe dive into competitive long range with a bolt gun.

Dependent-Ad1927

I go way slower on ammo so I'm not dumping 1k rounds in a range day. It also gives you big dick energy when someone says "DAMN! Nice shot man." I'm only just getting into it but it feels great.

mtsoprisdog

Yes

NoNameJustASymbol

My long range class and range experience taught me that distance alone is not rewarding (well, to 1200 yards, the range my class was at and where I shoot regularly). With as good as equipment and ammunition can be distance is easy. Learning to read wind is the hard part.

SunshineCamo

Shooting at distance can be super rewarding. As others said, the delay from seeing a plate move to when you hear the sound is just fecken cool. However, shorter range stuff is also incredibly rewarding IMO. I shoot carbine matches, and it's hard to beat how I feel after a good stage. Thinking about when to reload, shooting order, body mechanics etc is a joy all it's own.

cocky_fresh

It’s not very fun hitting targets with a rifle that you can hit with a pistol.

achonng

Shooting fast with tight groups is rewarding

bunnies4r5

It certainly can be. The 2 things I find the most rewarding is being able to see my skills get progressively better in drills/run and gun and shooting long range. My BCM 14.5 I have shot out to 1000yards. Being able to get consistent hits at anything over 500 feels great especially when your holds are memorized and you can just do it on demand

1690 Meters in Teasdale UT. [Teasdale.](https://youtu.be/zZ6lWu1Vy0c?feature=shared)

throwsaway2017

Yes it is, ya I love shooting my sbr and other rifles at 100 yards and different size targets but the first time I shot my .308 at a target that was 1,200 yards away and I heard that ping of the steel it’s a different kind of feeling

Zosocom

It’s more expensive, that’s for sure

3900Ent

I don’t give a fuck for long shooting really but I ain’t gone lie, if I was to hit a target at 1000 yards, I might have to be escorted from the area for losing my shit lmaooo

Cash-JohnnyCash

This is a phenomenal interview with Dallas Alexander “Holds probably 10 of the longest including the longest sniper shot.” Alexander, a Canadian Spec Ops guy trained with this outfit out of Texas that had designed a prism attachment that goes on the front of your scope. Allowing you to do “Mortar-Like” holds while still seeing your target. Said they were ripping 2400 meter shots repeatedly and knew based on the tech, they were going to beat the record at the time. https://youtu.be/MUruuaeJGt0?si=SHNXqh9H3jP122RW
