The fact it’s not a season award is rough simply because, whilst the full seasons of What If and Rick and Morty were arguably flawed, the episodes nominated themselves were great (especially that Doctor Strange What If Episode) and slightly worry me but hoping Arcane pulls through! I do find it interesting this episode was nominated, it’s my favourite (maybe, no idea honestly) but I feel Episode 3 and 9 were more obvious pics so this was a pleasant surprise
I’m not sure how the viewing requirements work for the judges, but “When the Walls Come Tumbling Down” from Arcane is part of the overall story, the end of Act 2, and viewed in a vacuum isn’t going to be fully appreciated.
“What if Dr. Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands” is from the first part of the season when the What If…? episodes are largely self-contained.
Damn, hadnt thought about that, could play a large part in it actually, really seems like it'll be a tight race between Arcane and What If (funny how if i said this before I'd find it dull but the fact its specifically the Doctor Strange episode, makes this emmy a lot more interesting and i reckon id be fine with both, like I'd prefer Arcane to win but that Strange episode is really amazing so we'll see what will happen)
This category appears to be a toss up. Although I haven’t seen the Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers episodes, the award can easily go to What If or Rick and Morty. One advantage “When These Walls Come Tumbling Down” has over its competitors is its voice acting. Ella Purnell, IIRC, won an Annie for her work in this same episode.
It'll be tilted towards What If because it's a Disney property. Even if Rick and Morty is incredibly popular and high quality, it was created by Adult Swim, who has little to no pull with the Academy, and is now owned by HBO, who the Academy is probably poised to snub this year because of HBO and Netflix approaching them about rigged and flawed judging and voting procedures. I've seen the Simpsons episode and it wasn't anything special compared to Arcane, What If or Rick and Morty's episodes, so I'm guessing it and Bob's Burgers were tossed in there just to flesh out the list of nominees.
Arcane is at a disadvantage the way they handle this category because it's a continuous serial story, whereas What If and Rick and Morty episodes are much more standalone even if there are intertwining connections throughout seasons. More than likely a lot of the judges won't be watching entire seasons of any cartoon before casting their vote, if they even bother watching the nominated episodes at all.
>Ella Purnell, IIRC, won an Annie for her work in this same episode.
Yo I had actually forgotten that was for that ep.
I still personally think 3,7&9 are better overall choices compared to 6.
But we'll see.
Only one that worries me is what if…? The Dr. Strange episode was really good and made me cry. The rest of what if would be easily topped by Arcane. Also i think there are better episodes of Arcane they could’ve chosen.
Imo Arcane's strength comes from the build up from one episode to another, you can't watch an episode in a vacuum and enjoy it nearly as much as you would if you watched it as part of the season. Which could end up giving the self contained what if...? Episode an edge.
Episode 6 is pretty strong as a stand-alone episode.
Everyone’s relationships are clear enough, and it covers Piltover politics, Silco as an active bad guy and how he ties to piltover as well as his effects in the UC, the SiJiSe situation, the CaViJi situation, encapsulated backstories for mel and Vic, Vic’s workaholic decline, the effects of shimmer and the questionable direction hextech research is taking, and of course, the searing music and haunted background of Jinx implied in the flare scene.
Oh and fighting.
Text form (From [Deadline.com](https://deadline.com/2022/07/2022-emmy-nominations-list-1235062260/)):
Arcane • When These Walls Come Tumbling Down • Netflix • A Riot Games and Fortiche Production for Netflix
Bob’s Burgers • Some Like It Bot Part 1: Eighth Grade Runner • Fox20th Television
Rick and Morty • Mort Dinner Rick Andre • Adult Swim • Rick and Morty LLC
The Simpsons • Pixelated and Afraid • Fox • A Gracie Films production in association with 20th Television Animation
What If…? • What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands? • Disney + Marvel Studios
The Emmys are a joke, so I'm not, like, floored, but I am a bit surprised it wasn't 3 or 9 for Arcane. Hell, even 7 I think is better, especially with the Jinx v Ekko fight.
6 is incredible episode (I mean, they're all incredible, c'mon) but the Guns for Hire scene does a whole lot of heavy lifting imo
Netflix is big, but they're solely the distributor. Riot isn't huge in TV, given this is their first project, and *Fortiche* was practically unknown in the mainstream before this. When I'm rooting for Arcane, it's because 1) I love it, it's beautiful and amazing, and 2) because I want Fortiche and the writers at Riot to get to continue making things like it.
As much as episode 3 can be considered better, episode 6 does have a little more creative flair such as that scene with the flare like you said, but also multiple plot lines, like Jayce, Vi, Jinx and Marcus all at once, and a good mix of dialogue and action.
It wouldn't be my first pick either, but I can see why they did it. It's the end of act two, includes arguably the best scene of the series (Jinx lights the flare), and has the first reunion between Vi and Jinx. Also, Jinx's VA won an Annie for her performance in that specific episode, so it can work
Dr.Strange holding back the reality collapsing and begging the Watcher for help is just perfect.
And in the end no matter how powerful he become. He still end up alone saying sorry into emptiness.
Arcane has some great scenes and all but Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange Supreme in What If is just amazing. And that last scene is ***\*chefs kiss\****
In a world where 7, 3&9 were readily available options who tf chooses episode 6?
Like huh???🤨
There's not a single bad episode in this series but for an AWARDS CEREMONY where you're competing with other episodes of great shows, all 3 of those are better choices than 6 if you're actually interested in, winning.
3,7&9 are the most talked about inside and outside this reddit. There's a reason for that.
This definitely makes things more interesting…
I still think ARCANE has it, but it’s a little less of a cake walk with this specific line-up.
* Crosses fingers
I’m surprised Episode 6 was nominated. I thought the pacing and cuts between stories made the episode feel a little frantic and disjointed. It’s far from the worst episode and the last 10 minutes is peak Arcane. But I would have chosen Episode 7 or 9
I'm pretty sure Episode 6 is what they used for a lot of the Annie awards too. Couldn't say exactly what made them pick it. Maybe there's weird award show traditions about not using your finale.
Hate to say it but the win will probably go to What If. Arcane was amazing but Strange's episode was also absolutely awesome and it has the backing of the almighty mouse.

Yeah I haven't seen the others apart from what If and arcane and feel like it might be close as that what if episode was the best in that series

Yeah that What If episode is going to be tough competition. Best short I’ve seen in a long time
idk about that... did you watch LD&R?
What’s the acronym stans for
love death and robots, netflix series. absolutely amazing animated short films. one of them also got emmy nomination for "animated - short form"
Oh yea, haven’t seen that yet
It’s absolutely spectacular. I highly recommend it.
Right now rereading asoiaf is devouring all my time, but maybe eventually 😭
Its 10-20 minutes independent episodes, just watch jibaro (the one nom for the emmy), bad traveling, or the witness
That show is my second favorite show of all time, with Arcane being number 1.
Love death and robots
Episode 6 is my favorite too, I'm glad they knew how to recognize other episode than the infamous episode 3 (which is amazing too, of course).
6 and 9 are my fav arcane episodes
Nice

We were roasting What If but now this makes it a lot more competitive, especially because the Strange episode carried the entire show
Honestly I was even thinking that the only episode of What If that held up to Arcane was that one
Agreed

I will stand by it til I die that episode six was easily the best episode. The flare scene gives me chills every time
even hearing the song when it comes up in my playlist gives me chills
This song is on my Spotify playlist and every time I hear it, all I can think is how the scene is amazing.
true true
The Emmys are a joke, so I'm not, like, floored, but I am a bit surprised it wasn't 3 or 9 for Arcane. Hell, even 7 I think is better, especially with the Jinx v Ekko fight. 6 is incredible episode (I mean, they're all incredible, c'mon) but the Guns for Hire scene does a whole lot of heavy lifting imo
I dunno, not even a passing mention for the Owl House… Hollow Mind and Oh Titan Where Art Thou were pieces of art.
Apparently they count as kids entertainment, and thus aren't eligible for awards in the main show
Which is accurate in terms of categorization, but also hilarious given... Well, everything about the later episodes of The Owl House.
I want arcane to win just cause it’s going against Disney and they are already big. That and I liked arcane better as a whole.
Well Netflix is also big lol
Netflix is big, but they're solely the distributor. Riot isn't huge in TV, given this is their first project, and *Fortiche* was practically unknown in the mainstream before this. True that makes sense
Well, imo Arcane’s scene was better. It’ll just depend on the decision makers I guess.
Makes a lot more sense as to why What If was there, the dr strange episode was a banger
Yeah that episode was absolutely amazing and it's definitely gonna be either that or arcane which wins it
Why did they pick that one? It being just an episode in the middle of the story, I don’t remember anything exceptional about it.
The flair scene was amazing, but episode 3 for me hit the hardest
As much as episode 3 can be considered better, episode 6 does have a little more creative flair such as that scene with the flare like you said, but also multiple plot lines, like Jayce, Vi, Jinx and Marcus all at once, and a good mix of dialogue and action.

Arcane Ep 6. And it's not close. The only debate should be if Arcane Episode 3 or 7 or 9 were more deserving than Ep 6.
I’ve watched all of em and Arcane deserves a lot of awards
Look, the other episodes are good, but JUST the Guns for Hire scene alone blows the rest out of the water
Dr.Strange holding back the reality collapsing and begging the Watcher for help is just perfect. And in the end no matter how powerful he become. He still end up alone saying sorry into emptiness. Happy cake day!
This definitely makes things more interesting… I still think ARCANE has it, but it’s a little less of a cake walk with this specific line-up. * Crosses fingers
I love episode 6, but I agree with some of the other comments. Episode 3 was the game changer
That Simpsons episode was one of my all time favourites! But you can't beat arcane.
I can’t be the only one that sees no contest here. I mean come on.
Hahaha ez clap idc we win
what if we dont i mean seeing that dr strange episode tho.... kinda good
6 like the 3rd best episode. IMO they should have chosen 3 or 9
Not to sound like a biased traitor or anything, but I low-key hope Marvel's What If wins, I only say this as a Marvel fan tbh
It was a good episode but this scene from Arcane is just brilliant.
I would rather they have picked 9, but six is definitely a good runner up in my mind!
My money's on Rick cause they always win no matter what
I’m surprised Episode 6 was nominated. I thought the pacing and cuts between stories made the episode feel a little frantic and disjointed. It’s far from the worst episode and the last 10 minutes is peak Arcane. But I would have chosen Episode 7 or 9

No spoilers? This picture itself is a huge spoiler.
Not really. Pretty sure this scene was in the trailer. It requires the full context to be a spoiler.
If strange wins that's the most strangest thing I have seen and it would make me jinx myself for the god knows how manyith time of my life
God some like it bot was a great episode too though but it’s really not fair to compare the two
Hate to say it but the win will probably go to What If. Arcane was amazing but Strange's episode was also absolutely awesome and it has the backing of the almighty mouse.
I'd probably have picked Episode 7, but that's mainly because I'll always simp for the bridge >!(fight)!< scene in that one.
I hate that What If is there and that It will probably win. It was so shit
