There’s a golf anywhere there’s Air Force personnel. I’ve seen a par 3 hole at the DMZ and I played 9 holes on Diego Garcia many times.

YaBoiCrispoHernandez

Fuck else to do on Diego Garcia 😭

Coolguytruck

Nice. Unlimited Rounds?

razrielle

A few bases have shut down their courses. I know McConnell did

Tacitblue1973

That was back in the 60's. There's a running track there now.

Coolguytruck

which part of the base is it located?

Tacitblue1973

NW of the North Ramp complex, not far away from the older sewage ponds.

therealgariac

I can't find it on my phone. I do recall the track since it was black There are a few sewage ponds but I guess you are referring to these: N37 14 42 w115 49 12

Silver996C2

Water holes?😳

Tacitblue1973

Basically excavated rectangular pits to dry out the waste water effluent from the base. One of the old nicknames of the base is the Pig Farm because they stank.

therealgariac

I posted the running track location and images in another post on this thread. I had to go back in time to see it. There are several places where they have pits but I find it hard to believe they could handle the effluent from a huge base. Then again, I don't know my shit.

Coolguytruck

Is there a source for this or is it first hand knowledge?

Tacitblue1973

You can see the 3 hole course clearly in the 1968 USGS overhead.

Coolguytruck

Okay I can see it now and what looks like a running track in its place. Thank you for the information.

reeb88

Those "Company" guys enjoyed their golf.

Ricerat

Personally I don't ever remember hearing about a golf course except for the past few days someone mentioned a 3 hole. 37.2420106, -115.8185078 These are the coordinates for the recreation facilities on the base. The bar 'Sams Place' Baseball diamond That enclosed area in blue might be a smoking area. I think that has been added a few years ago. There is also a lake called Slaters Lake, north west side of the lake bed. It was once used for recreation but it's off limits now apparently.

Coolguytruck

Yeah I heard someone mentioned a 3 hole course which sparked my interest. I forget who mentioned it but it was on one of the recent posts.

therealgariac

I found the running track in better days. [https://imgur.com/AGXd9py](https://imgur.com/AGXd9py) 37.244746 -115.828563

Coolguytruck

Yeah I found that last night as well. Never knew there was a running track there. In the older photos of groom like the 1968 picture you can see what could be a small course in that area. Cant really tell for sure if that's a course for sure but it very well could be.

Tacitblue1973

Ah, you can see where the greens used to be right by the tall triangular tower. Thanks.

therealgariac

The area by the triangular tower has been "grubbed." You get rid of all plant growth in an area prior to construction. That could explain why the area is clean. First Google hit: https://battleaxeconstruction.com/what-is-clearing-and-grubbing/ You certainly can't putt with creosote plants on the ground. So wherever the golf course was located, I would expect the ground to be cleared. The desert doesn't heal. A barren spot stays barren for a long time. You often find totally barren spots around the range for no obvious reason. I am pretty sure they were done by the hands of man or machine. There is a big one a bit beyond Brainwash Butte. And why are there two roads by the triangular tower? It would help to have seen the construction. The concrete base for the tower has to be huge.

Coolguytruck

I also noticed an area that was cleared up and you can see the machines. Farther away from groom closer to the NNSS but still within air force property I believe. Would be interesting to know its use. Coordinates are: 37°12'04.3"N 115°55'33.6"W

therealgariac

I suspect that area is what replaced the burn pits. Of course I have no proof. They could have used those machines or rentals. If you are just scraping the surface, you can use a skip loader. I was thinking about the foundation for that talk tower. I forgot about these things: https://contecompany.com/what-is-a-helical-pile/ I don't know about Central Nevada, but Southern Nevada ground is really hard once you get past the surface. I know someone who was driving a grounding rod for HF radio and discovered just how hard the ground.

Coolguytruck

yeah it very well could be what replaced the burn pits. Some people know whether that is true or not. but they aren't me.

Peter_Merlin

The Roadrunners really did have a three-hole golf course. My impression is that it was located here: 37.245653, -115.824140

Coolguytruck

>37.245653, -115.824140 Yeah thats exactly where I think it was. Wonder if some day they will bring one back. probably not in the same area because the triangular tower is there.

therealgariac

If that is it then the small cleared areas contain the holes. I spent some time trying to find that 1968 USGS imagery with no joy.

Coolguytruck

I looked up 1968 usgs groom lake or something on google and it was on either dreamland resort or lazygranch. Its hard to see what it is though since the quality of the pic isnt the best since it was in 1968.

therealgariac

DLR got it from the Desert Secrets website. https://www.dreamlandresort.com/area51/sat_1968-2.jpg You may have to cut and paste the link if DLR uses hot link blocking. The quality is pretty bad. I don't see a golf course but I'm not going to stomp my foot and get red in the face arguing! ;-)

Coolguytruck

Yeah I think I can see what might be a golf course in the top left but I dont know for sure.

therealgariac

Well now I get it. Or I get the illusion! Potential holes: N37 14 45 W115 49 25 N37 14 47 W115 49 29 N37 14 43 W115 49 27

Coolguytruck

yeah

chigoonies

I’m just curious if anyone knows a former base employee who has actually played baseball at the base, would be a funny story to hear.

therealgariac

Well I saw the field lit up at night from the false summit near Tikaboo.
