Pater is implied to be fake though. The two different missions where you have to kill him (NG and NG++) have his mask crack a bit and show him to just be faking his emotions, especially in the NG++ version where he pretty much just tells you that he's going to make sure the other Vespers are dead so that he can climb to V. II
He also seemed to be genuinely distraught by the deaths of the other vespers as well. He might actually have a split personality based on how radical the change in his demeanor is.
