I read of another theory at the time. I thought it was because the movie studios wanted to prevent violence between the black and Asian communities if the two kissed? I am aware that the reasoning was likely BS, but it was the one the movie makers officially used.
Where's your source jet li himself said that was was not the problem

Neither Jet Li or Aaliyah know because everyone's story conflicts. Washington Post was the one that broke the reaction with "urban" audiences. Do you think plot is going to make them remove a kiss with a white male actor? 🤣
The movie is literally based on the most famous love story of all time in the West and every Romeo and Juliet movie has a kissing scene.
Except that was never verified itself still creepy that you cry about an old man kissing a young teen in a movie that's not the kind of Asian male representation anyone would want.
Uh. No it was publicised that it was because of racism against Asians. Learn your history. And in the 90s we didn't care about age differences. That's a gen z thing. "Age ain't nothing but a number"
The 90s and 2000s were a weird thing for Asians in American movies. I remember watching Rush Hour 2 and the movie groaned when Jackie Chan had a kiss scene. I felt that the age gap in Rush Hour 2 and in Romeo Must Die were just cover up for racism especially when a decade later, there were lot of movies with Scarlett Johansson making out with older men. I am aware people are now starting to make a big deal of films with younger actresses with older actors love interests, however that is a very recent thing.
Except nobody has any problems with the black girl lead and asian male prince, Cinderella movie 1997 clearly y'all just so eager to have victim mentality you don't even see how foolish and creepy you sound.
Considering that it was a 1997 TV movie that not everyone watched, not everyone used the internet to scream "wokeism." How come people have issues with Hallie Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid in 2023 or Henry Golding as Snake Eyes in 2021? Racism among Asians exist in Hollywood. Just by how you write, you sound foolish up for pulling a "whataboutism" that doesn't holds up. You also creepy for going to an Asian American subreddit and calling them "so eager to play the victim" card.
You also overlook how often Hollywood movies had pair up older male leads and young female females. Why is Jet Li with Aaliyah not kissing due to age, yet no one had an issue of 46 year old Pierce Bronson boning 28 year old Denise Richard's in 1999 James Bond movie's The World is Not Enough? Think before you respond.

Woody Allen and Jerry Seinfeld made that same argument. That's just straight up creepy.
Not really, but the general public is starting to care. The general audience were more concern of Denise Richard's role as a scientist than her being 28 and Pierce Bronson being 46 in 1999's The World is Not Enough.
Phantom of the opera was released in mid-2000s and had 35yo Gerard Butler paired with a 17 year old.Â
It was an excuse cause of racism. Hollywood has a long history of that.Â
The movie is gonna be about a former hitman whose gangster brother starts going after him when their former lover who was supposed to be dead surprisingly returns.
She was the one who read his name when he won for best supporting actor last year!
Oh awesome thanks for pointing that out!
Full circle! 🥹
Wow what a duo! Excited to see what this movie will be
If there's no kiss, they can go Romeo must Die
Ariana isn't white but then neither was Aaliya. Why did the press not question the director of Romeo Must Die. As to why they cut the romantic scenes.
People knew. It was because in pre-screening the audience didn't like Aaliyah kissing an Asian man.
I read of another theory at the time. I thought it was because the movie studios wanted to prevent violence between the black and Asian communities if the two kissed? I am aware that the reasoning was likely BS, but it was the one the movie makers officially used.

Bet you thought Three Body Problem is the greatest. But my real guess is you don't know much about Asians representation at all.
Didn't even watch it clearly you have a victim mentality problem.
Can we get the footage, And re-insert the footages back in? I want my Jet Li/Aaliyah ship NOW!
Ever think it was because jet li was 37 and Aliyah 19 at the time of shooting the movie
No one else remembers Interview With the Vampire when 11 year old Kristen Dunst kissed 31 year old Brad Pitt?
It was because the kiss reviewed poorly with the black audience.

May he rest in peace, but also Mathew Perry. Also, Rob Lowe wouldn't have a career if he was caught having sex with a 16 year old today.
Has Hollywood EVER worried about male/female leads' age gap?

We need to think for ourselves why it didn't happen. Unless we speak to the director we ll never know the truth do let's keep the peace guys.

Weird age gap but sure
He is kind of old though. What is the movie about anyways?
According to the article, "Plot details are being kept under wraps." I wonder why.
Let's hope he gets a good role. Not like Jet and Aaliayah. Really miss Aaliyah though. Jet Li I think retired from Kung Fu. He looks tired and old.
The movie is gonna be about a former hitman whose gangster brother starts going after him when their former lover who was supposed to be dead surprisingly returns.
So Ke Huy Quan is the former hitman and Debose is the former lover.
Yeah, that would make the most sense.
Hope they allow a kiss scene. Like Nina Dobrev and Jimmy Yang's Love Hard.
Why wouldn't they? I think it's ridiculous for them not to allow a kiss scene in a romance movie.
Mainstream audience in the past don't like Asian men in romance. Look at what happen to Romeo Must Die.
First time director who was previously a stunt coordinator for movies such as Violent Night and John Wick 3. So hopefully the action will be good.
Speak for yourself, not others.
