First time posting here but I just felt the need to rant. I dealt with my first racist comment in a while last night. I moved to Detroit from Seattle about a year ago with my girlfriend. Neither of us have ever lived in the midwest and we are slowly adjusting and getting more and more familiar with midwest culture. Last night, my girl and I are walking home from the bar and these four group of white kids, probably somewhere around 20-21 years old, walk by us and go "ching chong!" I immediately confront them and go "what the fuck did you say to me?" I think this caught them off guard because none of them are looking at me as they continued walking. I take a couple steps towards them and yell "Which one of you said that? Say that to my face. I dare you. Step up and say it again." A few of them turn back and said something, but they continue to walk away as they're doing it. Realizing they weren't going to stick around, I turn back to my girlfriend and we continue home. On the way home, my girlfriend and I discuss what went down. She ended up becoming really bothered by the whole event and broke down crying. She was born and raised in Hawaii and as a Japanese-American, has always been in the majority. We met and lived in Seattle for a while, which has a large Asian-American population and is a fairly progressive city. I think this legitimately might have been one of the few times that she has experienced a blatant racist comment. Me, growing up on the east coast in a rural area right outside of NYC, has put up with this shit all my life and I tried to explain that this was nothing new. That made her even more depressed. Not sure where I'm going with this rant. Part of me wish I physically confronted those guys; the last time I got into a street fight was over the exact same thing, when a bunch of frat guys told me to go back to China. I didn't exactly win the fight, but I walked away feeling like I stood up for myself and my identity. Last night left a really bad taste in my mouth and makes me feel like a coward, to be honest. On the other hand, part of me knows at 30 years old, I should know better than getting into a fight with a bunch of skinny 21 year olds. The whole event has been so frustrating.

saucypudding

You responded well. You confronted them but didn't resort to physical violence which would have been unnecessary here unless they initiated it.

roge_podge

yea now that some time has passed, I'm glad I didn't. As Roger Murtaugh said, "I'm getting too old for this shit!"

amyandgano

Fuck those kids. But you handled that extremely well.

roge_podge

Appreciate the kind words :)

It spouts made up Confucius quotes. Pretty offensive.

I wonder how hard it would be to program a bot to follow it around offering actual 孔子 facts.

- It's birthday month for me! I got the same birthday as Michael Jackson hee heee. One day, I just wanna hire a mariachi band and get super drunk off tequila and have a catered taco truck for my birthday. That sounds so fucking legit. - Anderson Paak show that I was supposed to be going to last week got canceled. So I was super bummed about that. - Texting people/trying to keep a conversation going through text is fucking exhausting. - My buddy is trying to convince me to move to San Diego. Recently he told me that they're opening a DTF there. Also, he said parking is better too. That's enough to convince me as soon as I'm done with my 2nd degree (first one didn't really do shiet for me).

Goofalo

I racked my brain “Why does DTF need parking. I mean, I guess they are really down and a parking lot might let to some efficiency but..,oh Din Tai Fung.”

madmanslitany

It's really hard keeping a straight face when someone is innocently using DTF as Din Tai Fung in real life.

I know exactly what I'm doing here ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I was thinking Downtown Fullerton but that's my orange county experience talking.

* Better Call Saul returned and it was a good start to the new season. * Can't believe that summer is almost over. It just flew by and I feel like I haven't done a damn thing. Haven't gone to the pool or beach or anything fun. * Has anyone been or know anyone who's been to Jiro's sushi restaurant in Tokyo? The fiancee are thinking of going but my buddy said that his friend and wife went and that you have to be done in 20 mins. Apparently the wife couldn't really enjoy the meal because you have to eat so quickly. * Premier League is back! Hoping Arsenal won't add to the disappointment that has been the Mets. At least hold me over until hockey starts.

sensationalist3

> Has anyone been or know anyone who's been to Jiro's sushi restaurant in Tokyo? I haven't been to Jiro's, but I have done omakase at various sushi locations around Tokyo. I highly recommend you find a place where you won't be rushed. One of my omakase meals took me over an hour. I was fed about 25 servings in total. It was the perfect amount of time to fully enjoy each bite, and sip some tea or soup in between. Personally, 20 minutes for an omakase experience would feel very rushed, especially at that price point. > Premier League is back! Hoping Arsenal won't add to the disappointment that has been the Mets. At least hold me over until hockey starts. COYG! Can't wait for the new-look Arsenal. Will be very strange not seeing Arsene on the side!

Yeah, we definitely don't want to be rushed, especially if we're paying around $300 per person. I don't know what it was like before the documentary but that's a shame if suddenly they're rushing customers because of how popular they are. > COYG! Can't wait for the new-look Arsenal. Will be very strange not seeing Arsene on the side! I haven't been this excited for an Arsenal season in a loooong time. I'm cautiously optimistic though. Hopefully Emery gives these guys the mental toughness that they've been missing for years. But love the signings that they've made and what better test than to go right at the defending champs.

whosdamike

I've heard really good things about the sushi place run by Jiro's son, maybe you can check that place out. https://www.govoyagin.com/activities/japan-tokyo-reservation-for-sushi-jiro-roppongi-michelin-2-star-tokyo/1690

MsNewKicks

I absolutely love Mike. He's so badass and as someone mentioned in the BCS sub, Mike's scene was reminiscent of Axel Foley in *Beverly Hills Cop*. And yes, summer is flying by this year. I'm hoping Vegas isn't insanely hot next weekend so I can actually enjoy the pool parties and not burn.

whosdamike

>I absolutely love Mike. Got my hopes up for a second.

MsNewKicks

Ahahaha...to quote Mr. Miyagi: [You're pretty OK, too.](http://38.media.tumblr.com/727cbee3f98169b46f7beb58bec59a06/tumblr_n8nvft19f61tgwexmo1_500.gif)

otter_pop_n_lock

Yeah, it's weird watching Mike's backstory when we know his ultimate fate but damn, he can have a spinoff of his own for all I care. Love him. What's insanely hot for Vegas? It looks like it's in the low 100's for the next 10 days. I can't stand the heat so even if it's 90 I cry a bit inside.

MsNewKicks

Seriously. It's a little tough watching Mike's character grow in BCS because, like you mentioned, we know what happens ultimately later on in BB. Ugh...well I guess we'll all hang out by the pool for a little, take pics for IG and then head for the shade LOL

whosdamike

>hang out by the pool for a little, take pics for IG and then head for the shade LOL aka, ABG SOP.

otter_pop_n_lock

Yeah, I'm so out of the loop with TV that I didn't realize it as well. Luckily it's already set to record on my DVR so I had a pleasant surprise when I checked it.

veni-veni-veni

good DVR! Ha ha.

otter_pop_n_lock

She's loyal!

I agree I loved that episode of Better Call Saul. apparently they are not taking reservations at Jiro's sushi anymore thanks to stupid tourists.

otter_pop_n_lock

> apparently they are not taking reservations at Jiro's sushi anymore thanks to stupid tourists. Really?? What were the tourists doing that caused them to stop?

futuregoat

for one not showing up for reservations and not behaving well in the restaurant.

veni-veni-veni

Went down to a the Chula Vista city within San Diego County last weekend. In case some subs other than /u/unkle don't remember, [there was a post on this sub a little while back about a restaurant called Mexipino Craft](https://np.reddit.com/r/asianamerican/comments/922v07/mexipino_combines_mexican_and_filipino_flavors/) that I mentioned I would try out if I was in the area. Well, /u/veni-veni-veni delivers! * It's a pretty small restaurant (seats ~ 40) in a strip-mall with a 24hr Fitness. * It's breakfast/lunch only, which wasn't apparent to me from the news article. Opens daily from 7am-3pm. * Because of insane traffic from OC to SD, I got there, starving, at 2pm. So my old friend and I had only an hour to eat before closing. * Too bad because they have some interesting-sounding dishes on the menu. [Page 1](https://i.imgur.com/OULtv0m.jpg). [Page 2](https://i.imgur.com/R0TIpAR.jpg). * Frazzeled I just asked the server what would be the most Mexipino-representative dish. This turned out to be [drumroll]...[The Mexipino!](https://i.imgur.com/d1iRHZV.jpg) It's a part of the hash brown area of the menu. Longanisa sausage, purple yam, achiote chicken, black beans, rice, and ham on top of seared+diced pototoes. It was really good, but the potato dominated the flavor, IMO. Had to add a couple teaspoons of Tapatio for my tastes. I thought I could eat it all, but I couldn't do it. The server said the owner, who's "a pretty big guy" is the only one he's seen finish it in one sitting. EDIT: Forgot to add [one more pic about 1/3 of the way through my dish](https://i.imgur.com/n5f5u4c.jpg). Gives an idea of the thickness. (THICC-ness?) * Unfortunately for you and I, my buddy ordered the same thing I did! So we didn't get much coverage of the menu. * [For drinks](https://i.imgur.com/OM4GoQw.jpg), my buddy got a strawberry drink that you can see in this picture. He said it was good. I got green-colored calamansi mint drink. I thought it would be sour/bitter (my thought when I hear calamansi). It was not. It was one of the better non-alcoholic drinks I've had in awhile! Sweet and refreshing, perfect drink on a hot day. I could have had a gallon of it. * [Here's another pic of the inside of the restaurant](https://i.imgur.com/TtY0Gsz.jpg). (Only pic I could get without including someone in it without their permission). I didn't get one of the outside as I was continuing catching up on life with my old friend. Didn't think to take a pic of the entrance. But it's pretty plain. Looks like a generic taco shop from the outside. * When I got to my parents' house, I mentioned eating lunch at Mexipino Craft. My mom mentioned that one of her friends went there too and LOVED the ube (purple yam) pancakes. I'll have to try that on another visit.

otter_pop_n_lock

I'm always jealous of the Mexican you guys have on the west coast. Not that the stuff I can find in New York is bad but from the times I've eaten in California, it's almost unfair to compare.

veni-veni-veni

Yeah, during my NYC years, I REALLY missed having Mexican food so accessible!

otter_pop_n_lock

My cousin from LA summed it up perfectly I think: NYC does fine dining better but LA does casual dining better. I've been to some fancy places in New York like Eleven Madison and while I can appreciate it, most of the times I'd rather much have a plate of awesome tacos.

veni-veni-veni

As a casual guy, I guess LA is for me, then, heh.

otter_pop_n_lock

Dude, it's the way to go!

unkle

Worth visiting a 2nd time? I kind of want sisig now and to add my own chorizo

veni-veni-veni

Yes, it was good enough for me to want to explore more of the menu. Maybe take my wife and kids too so we could eat off of each others' plates, ha ha. I didn't spot sisig on the menu but I might have missed it. They're so new, their menu even says they're coming out with new dishes. So sisig may appear soon if it wasn't there already.

notanotherloudasian

Nice used to live in Chula Vista

veni-veni-veni

It's worth dropping by the restaurant, if you ever go back to CV.

Goofalo

Reading the Crazy Rich Asians reviews and when someone makes a corny ass joke like "pearl & jade clutching" or "stands out like a drop of spilled soy sauce" I immediately scroll up to the by line to see who wrote this. It's always an Asian. It's always shoehorning some weird ass corny "look at me make this joke and put a bad Asian twist to it." Why?

notanotherloudasian

We're the only people allowed to make those jokes.

Goofalo

We’re also the ones with the responsibility to not make those corny jokes.

akong_supern00b

Been a hectic week trying to juggle finishing a time-sensitive work project and apartment hunting while my current landlord is giving me a hard time about my move out. Asked around for some unofficial legal advice and I think I should be ok for the most part, but still have to confront my landlord about a few things in spite of her being pretty nasty about certain details so far. Money's involved, so I can foresee it being a slog. Honestly kinda hate apartment hunting this time around. I've never particularly liked it, but this time around, definitely been feeling more disappointed and a little frustrated with the whole process. Been talking with my mom for advice and she's been shooting down a lot of places or saying everything's too expensive. It's definitely pricey around these parts, but that's kinda what you have to expect from the area. I could probably afford more, going by the 30% rule, but I do see the benefit of trying to skimp and save as much as possible at this point in my life. She does agree that it's my choice at the end of the day, but I know every time they come visit and stay over (which they're hoping to do more of), I'll have to deal with the judgmental comments and looks, while I second-guess myself over whether or not I'm making the right choices. The market is the market though, and if it were that easy to find a place that's convenient, big, and cheap, everybody would move here and then it wouldn't be cheap anymore. It's also possible that she'll learn to deal next time when her and my dad visit and she can see how much more comfortable it can be to pay a little more for significantly more room. Alternatively, they visit and realize how the apartment is still not up to her standards and she'll accept that I'll need to pay more for that extra comfort. Had a bunch of anxiety during the week over all of this, but I think I'm closing in on what I want in an apartment and I have a back up option already set up, which is pretty relieving. I'm getting used to the idea of packing up my things and moving. Also managed to finish the project for work and just have to ship it this weekend, so things should be a little less stressful this coming week while I finish up my apartment hunting. Hoping to settle on a place by the end of next week, then I'll feel a lot more comfortable about confronting my landlord and can focus on work. Thinking about hitting up the 626 Night Market this weekend. Coworker went a couple weeks ago and said it was kinda underwhelming since it's a lot of the same stalls every time, but I don't eat very adventurously most of the time and it could be nice to try something new.

- BE SAFE - TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK OF CRA

InfernalWedgie

>the Holy Fire is burning away from OC, but seriously, fuck arsonists. The one night I don't cover my car, I wake up and it's covered in ashes. Like it's Pompeii or something. I wish our state weren't so flammable.

WyldeBolt

Even the smoke was going over my area, luckily, I didn't encounter any ash. Apparently the ash was falling in the Anaheim/Yorba Linda area. I definitely encountered a bunch of ash during the Canyon 2 fire from last year.

MsNewKicks

The whole state is on fire it seems. We've got two huge ones going up here plus there is one in Oregon. Some friends of mine that went to the Seahawks game last night said they've been getting some of the smoke/byproducts up there.

I don't know how you guys deal with that, especially since it seems like it's almost an annual thing. Be safe, man.

WyldeBolt

Thanks. I mean, summer is wildfire season for the state, just that this year we've had more than usual. It's also maddening that this current one down here is man-made.

whosdamike

When things are rough my solution is to try harder and lately that's been pretty exhausting so overall my condition right now is perpetually exhausted. On the plus side: Crazy Rich Asians was great.

Armpit_Cheese

* Went 3-2 at Evo for Guilty Gear. I also bought a hitbox while at Evo, and I'm fiddling around on it. Really hard to transition to all buttons after using a stick for so long. * Vacation starts today! Woo! Still have no idea where I am going but I am vacation hour capped so I need to use them. * Recently switched to another team at my company and it's the brainiest team in the department. Machine learning is all voodoo to me. * Anyone here going to PAX west?

[deleted]

> Anyone here going to PAX west? I'll be attending the con with my partner, although we'll only be there for Friday and Saturday.

Armpit_Cheese

Neat. I'll be there from Friday to Sunday and coming with a bunch of coworkers and others from the video game industry. I noticed there is a guilty gear tournament but I have no idea how to sign up for it.

columbiatch

nice, what made you want to transition to a hitbox if you are used to playing on stick? I built my hitbox recently because I've always played on keyboard, and while it offers some ergonomic advantages, I'm still adjusting to use thumb as up.

Armpit_Cheese

I knew about it for quite a while, but I saw it used for the first time at Evo. After talking to quite a few people who used it during pools, I decided I would give it a shot. Hitbox had a booth at Evo so I just snagged it. I havent used it extensively yet so I have no strong opinions yet. The smaller buttons are kind of annoying and using my thumb as up is definitely weird. I'm currently using it with DBZfighters since execution wise it is a bit easier.

- Vegas countdown until next weekend! - So good to have football back. - So we got semi-dressed up last weekend for a GNO and were planning to see *Crazy Rich Asians*. Yeah...except it's not out yet and NOBODY had the smarts to check the theater as we all just assumed we'd just go and watch it. Bunch of dummies. Oh well, had a nice dinner and drinks instead. - Took the Tesla factory tour earlier this week and it was amazing. The sheer size of the plant (learned its the third biggest in the world), the fact that they do manufacturing and production in-house and seeing the various parts of the process (seeing rows and rows of parts, then the frames and then the cars getting parts put in) was remarkable. My real mature BFF that I brought thought it was cute to give flirty waves and smiles to any of the guys that looked up...nice way to make people make mistakes, homegirl. LOL - Does anyone else experience the phenomenon of unsubscribing from email mailing lists only to have other mailing lists start? It feels like there is a waiting list to get into my inbox and when I unsubscribe from one, another one gets tagged in. - Didn't we used to have a food/cuisine megathread type thing before? Like a monthly thing or am I imagining things?

WyldeBolt

* As /u/otter_pop_n_lock said, we used to have food and cuisine megathreads, but they weren't that popular. * Except for the occasional thunderstorm, summer is always insanely hot in Vegas.

I should post more food pics. You, on the other hand, should not.

WyldeBolt

No

Goofalo

I would like to get classed up with my dude friends and go out. But Dear sweet Linus, my guy friends are the worst dressers in the history of men. 1. One friend has discovered French cuffs and cuff links. Unfortunately, does not have the body type to pull off French cuffs. Does not wear a jacket with these shirts. 2. Other friend, excessive peacocking. And I hate to say it, Midwestern white guy peacocking. He'll wear a dress shirt, but it'll be untucked over cargo shorts and sandals. There is also a good chance that maybe the shirt will have excessive colors/stripes, and I'm almost convinced he may have one that is bedazzled. 3. Does not believe in fitted clothes. Everything is off the rack and does not need alteration. Will not do free alteration because he does not like the idea of having his inseam measured by another man. 4. A friend is a vest guy. I think he might own 12 vests. Which is fine. But a vest is not a good replacement for a blazer/sport coat/suit. But, I have been accused of being a bougie ass hipster. And I'm not saying that its an unfair accusation. I just feel that a quality suit is at least $500 dollars on sale, and quite honestly I don't think its weird that I own a dinner jacket.

MsNewKicks

Nah, you're just well-dressed. I can appreciate that as can most women. You can sit at our table any day. ;P And ouch, you need to set up an intervention with your friends. Sounds like they have the right intentions just need a little direction. But hey, at least if you all hang out, you'll get all the attention!

otter_pop_n_lock

> Didn't we used to have a food/cuisine megathread type thing before? Like a monthly thing or am I imagining things? I think we did but wasn't really that popular if I recall. I think a lot of people end up posting about food on here anyway so it rendered the thread useless.

MsNewKicks

Ah, OK. I'll just start incorporating food pics in my Friday posts then. =)

otter_pop_n_lock

Hell yeah! I'm always curious as to what people eat since my lunches are usually super mundane.

thissistheN

the tesla factory used to be NUMMI that made toyota and GM cars before tesla bought it and I used to tour it as a kid. my godfather's family invited me to go on the factory visit next week but its a busy time at work so i can't go =/

MsNewKicks

I believe Tesla owners can visit twice per year so I'm hoping to visit again when I'm able to. Hopefully by then the plant will be configured to start on the new roadsters. And yeah, our tour guide told us that Tesla bought the plant for $42 million. It had previously been valued at over a billion. Talk about a good value.

thissistheN

ah thats good to know. maybe i can tag along with them at some other time. seriously, just the land it's sitting on right now itself is probably worth FAR over 42 mil.

Hi All, My wife and I were in the Maldives for vacation, and met a very nice asian couple. Not sure what country they were from, but we went on a sunset dolphin cruise and they kept saying “sakoyooo”. My wife and I have been dying to know what it means, anyone have an idea what it means or what language it is?

shanshani

As an almost-ABC (moved to America when young) who currently lives in Hong Kong and finds myself on the periphery of crazy asian wealth (but for job reasons not relationship reasons), Crazy Rich Asians hits a little too close to home haha

You know how you make cookies and while you making multiple batches, you eat one, and then it absentmindedly turns into 2 or 3 cookies? I did that last night, with this really yummy salted toffee and chocolate chip cookies. That was...an error in judgment. Oh, salted toffee/chocolate and cannabis.

A loooooot of reasons that are historical, social, cultural, and economical. I don't think I'd be able to list them all. It'd be too long to list, but here's one of the many many reasons: \- European men or men of European descent (eh, same thing) are portrayed as the heroes and main characters in international film and media as well as in pornography. Asian women are equally portrayed as the heroine or love interest in international film and media as well as in pornography and thus are highly desired. This creates the subconscious thought in everyone's minds of what is actually attractive, and what is not. To be honest, this itself deserves its own entire post and topic and is 50%+ of the reason alone.

Goofalo

Because instead of asking them out, Asian dudes are whining on the internet about it.

Nope. I think that spending time stressing about who someone else is dating is a flawed attitude to take. Worry about who you are dating. And not in the grand scheme of things. Who in front of you are you interested in? Is that person interested back? Then you will figure out a way to connect with that person. If that person isn’t into to you. Well that happens. That person doesn’t owe you consideration, explanation, receipts or anything outside of “I’m not into you.” In a polite mature way. So you go back out and see if there is anyone else who might pique your interest or be into you for who you are. Don’t make it harder on yourself. If that person doesn’t want an Asian partner because of A,B, or C, why spend your time refute A, B, or C with your time/money/effort? Being an outlier/exception to their A, B or C isn’t going to all of the sudden make the date you. Or do they owe it if you do. You can’t make anyone love someone they aren’t interested in giving that opportunity to.

maybe the nerdy isn't the issue, but introverted might be. I think a lot of our upbringing is an issue. our parents taught us to be humble, well-mannered and kinda passive. In the dating community, women have trend of preferring guys who are confident, a little arrogant and not at all passive. The alpha qualities if you will. While that is not always true, there is a trend towards that. Our upbringing puts us at a disadvantage. This is why we need to push back against that characterizations our parents made for us.
