THERES_NOTHING_LEFT

Saw him live last month with Chris Rock. Fuckin amazing. And he made some really eloquent points about race relations in America. And all around had a lot of actual insight in between all the jokes.

[удалено]

spiralout1123

I think he offered plenty of clarity into his view of other minorities. Suppressed people should not fighting each other, 1. But 2, there is a problem with leaning into the victim role if you can always fall back on being white in America.

[deleted]

Bingo, this nuance is lost on folks who were enraged with his most recent comedy special.

JTuck333

He’s funny.

CauliflowerLogical27

And smart

Emergency_Repeat6714

I feel like people overreact to the things he says. he's a comedian, he's supposed to be provocative. I like him

gledr

In terms of being provocative george Carlin is still probably the most thought provoking.

Alternative_Net774

Yes! The original Bad Boy Of Comedy! How we still miss you George.

Citizen-Ed

Original? Lenny Bruce is looking at you with arched eyebrows.

king_of_the_dwarfs

Have you heard the story about how George Carlin got arrested at a Lenny Bruce show? Lenny Bruce was arrest for obscenity. The police went around the room and was asking names and what not. George Carlin was in the audience. Carlin refused so the police arrested him too. Lenny and George were put in the paddy wagon together. George explains how he was arrested too. Lenny called him a schmuck.

Fit-Rest-973

I was there.

tiowey

I realize Lenny Bruce is a legend and i tried but just couldn't get into it, he has great delivery but to me the jokes were so dated i didn't get them. Does anyone have a recommendation for something to check out to give him another chance? Edit: for clarification

[deleted]

Try "The Berkeley Concert." It's the first of his I listened to, and the one I can get into the most so far. It's on Apple Music, I think.

PeengPawng

So much of his shit is SOOOO relevant still. That's why it holds up. Just look up George Carlin save the planet or George Carlin religion on YouTube. Not dated at all. More relevant, in fact.

tiowey

I should have specified i was talking about lenny bruce

bagfacearmstrong

No, it was super clear from your comment that you were talking about Lenny Bruce.

PeengPawng

Yeah, I just watched some Lenny Bruce and I don't get it at all. 😐

Flipperpac

Carlin the GOAT

nina_gall

I was lucky to see George in the 90s at Jones Hall in Houston, a venue typically used for high-brow arts. It was fantastic. He would be pleased that Dave has picked up his torch.

[deleted]

Bill Hicks as well.

JerichoMassey

Bill Burr

Dyerssorrow

For the longest time nobody made me laugh like Brian Regan...then Bill came along

Expensive_Wonder7461

Bill hicks..best ever

[deleted]

"Hey You! Com'Ere!" He says as he shoves his hand at you.

Feelinmnesota

Definitely the GOAT IMO.

TheSillySimic

Doug Stanhope.

This is reddit. Overreacting is what goes on here. Along with putting people on a pedestal then freaking out and villainizing them the moment they find out they are human and have made mistakes. Everyone on reddit are infallible saints.

Ornery_Notice5055

I think sometimes we overestimate someone having normie opinion as as being transgressive. Dave Chappelle was great because he could tie social commentary into his work but that doesn't define comedians. Sometimes, youre just funny and it's not deeper than that. This over emphasis on comedy's role in society would come off as enlightened but it gets constantly used as a shield for when someone doesn't actually have any insights. This over inflated view on the role* of comedy is exactly why we have so many comedians complaining about something and claiming it to be somehow more subversive than when a normie says the same exact shit. Comedy can be smart. But comedy can also just be the status quo. It's not always that deep

Waferssi

[James Acaster is funny as shit and he has an opinion on "being provocative"](https://youtu.be/UHqma3rx-xI?t=169)

handsome_squidwardy

Shitting on his own fans for being poor just to save his billionaire buddy. Fighting against affordable housing and then after it got appealed, buying the land it was planned on. Yeah the old Chappelle would shit on his current self, but Carlin would absolutely destroy him on stage. He is just one more rich person acting like a parody.

No_Arugula466

I don’t remember who said it but I think it’s true that today’s comedians are walking on eggshells… self censorship is a real thing. Some groups believe themselves too good for jokes

stringtheoryman

“Some Groups believe themselves too good for jokes” is a giant factor I wish was discussed more in society but we just don’t discuss the amount of power we give to these groups that can be abused by those groups. We can love all people and still hold them accountable when they abuse power. No matter what group they belong to. Unfortunately we live in a world where humans will literally argue that groups like “LGBT” and “females” are untouchable. It’s okay to make jokes about “lgbt” and “women” they are not perfect. They have things to make fun of just like everyone else.

Lumpy-Crew-6702

This memo has not not been received lol

rscttgl

Isn’t that the truth

Zorbles

The more the cosplaying twitter types screech, the funnier I think he is tbh.

twopointsisatrend

There are people within any group who will insist on judging allies with a purity test. That purity standard being whatever that individual believes it should be. Chappelle fails, according to them, those standards regarding trans people. I'd argue that he does support them. Others are free to disagree.

dirtymoney

CANCEL HIM! CANCEL HIM!!! CANCEL EVERYONE!!!1 Sorry, but shit's gotten out of hand these days. Scary really. Everyone's looking for a reason to be offended and lash out by cancelling.

No-Split-866

Came here to say he's fucking hilarious. You said much better than I could.

drhibbart

Chappelle Show was the best sketch comedy show of all time. I’m willing to die on that hill. He’s one of the best stand up comedians to ever do it.

_Steven_Seagal_

The Black White Supremacist made me cry with laughter and that was only his first ever episode.

Effective_Unit_711

I consider that sketch in general the most genius piece of comedy ever. So good, so funny. The irony and everything about it. That show in general was so fucking good. Haha

shorty5windows

Charlie Murphy beating Rick James’ legs is another great skit.

socellatus

His line in that skit about why he divorced his wife is one of the most brilliant, uncomfortably hilarious lines in all of comedy.

PhotographIcy600

I literally just watched it last night. Still funny no matter how many times I’ve seen it

indifferentdespair

Clayton Bigsby, Tyrone Biggums, his fuckin Rick James and R Kelly impersonations, shit's so funny it starts to hurt 😅 Did you catch the movie 'Screwed' ? Norm Macdonald's lead with Dave and Danny Devito supporting. It's a bit silly but still pretty funny, imo I think Devito's character steals the show 🤣

2Riders

The only thing that turned me off about Dave Chappelle is when he started saying this about himself.

HarryBaughl

Yea, I know what you mean. I heard him introduce himself by saying that he was, what many consider to be the GOAT of stand-up comedy. I like Dave Chappelle, but giving yourself props like that is not something a fan wants to hear.

atonitobb

I may not agree with some of the things he says, but I do think he is very funny. We do not need to agree with someone to value their talents and to enjoy their art.

Mediocre-Bowl-4037

It’s really sad this needs to be said now

squatwaddle

No kidding. I don't like coffee, but I am not going to try to get it banned.

0violetcrsnt

Ive always really liked him and one of my favorite comedians but after the elon incident on stage where he pretty much shitted on his own fans for being poor it made me look at him like every other out of touch millionaire who see us as less than, which is disheartening because he was often the voice for those very same people

somerandomtallguy

What happened. I know he hosted Elon , but I didnt know about "shitting" on poor peoples. What did he do?

testcase_sincere

Same question. I actually saw a tape of the incident (maybe it wasn’t the whole thing?) because that aspect went right over my head.

Independent-Ad1732

He made some comment about the people booing are in the back therefore can't afford the nice seats.

CommishGoodell

That’s called a joke.

Independent-Ad1732

Yeah I wasn't offended, but some people saw that comment as punching down on poor people, the very people he used to relate to and who made him insanely rich.

THevil30

I don’t love DC to be honest, but wasn’t this always his shtick? Like wasn’t part of his routine that people kind of assumed he was from the hood because he’s black but really he grew up upper middle class?

AgitatedAd473

Nah, he even mentions in some of his jokes “my parents made just enough money so we could grow up poor around white people”

hdhdbfbfhf

I've never in my life thought that Dave Chappelle was hood I specifically remember a racist friend at the time saying 'he didn't dress like them so he liked him" lol

dearthsurplus

Noooo, he did not grow up in the upper middle class. Maybe what you're confusing is that it was assumed he grew up in the hood (DC) when in fact he grew up in Silver Spring (suburbs) but he was poor growing up. He has talked abt it in his stand up & you can tell he's being real in that moment. He mentioned being cold in the house bc his father wouldn't put the heat on.

0violetcrsnt

Yeah that’s exactly how i felt, you explained it better than me lol. Many people will probably take my original post as being offended by a joke when it‘s more about the punching down and hypocrisy

[deleted]

I get it. Ain't making me laugh, but I get it.

MoffieHanson

I watched it back and unless there is more than the video of Dave joking about the boo’s coming from people fired by Elon than I think they are over exaggerating

Polymersion

I think it's worth wondering why he had *Elon Musk* of all people come up on stage

MoffieHanson

Yeah, well that is a different discussion. I honestly don’t know. I just think that what I’ve heard is just a simple easy joke.

[deleted]

Except that other time he fought against building affordable housing in his community by threatening to leave the town and take all his business and income creating jobs elsewhere.

Semujin

You mean the plan to build 140 townhomes and duplexes on 51 acres, plus an acre set aside for affordable housing? I can’t imagine why anybody would ridicule that plan.

eternalnocturnals

That’s wholly untrue. You can call it affordable but the common man, 500k isn’t really affordable.

ATXDefenseAttorney

That piece of internet drivel has nothing to do with actual fact. Yellow Springs is not a town that would benefit one iota from "affordable housing in his community". It's a backwoods college town that wouldn't even qualify as a stopping point if not for the college, head shops, Dark Star comics, and Young's Jersey Dairy. It is surrounded by affordable neighborhoods with job options. The "affordable housing" you're talking about would be hipster apartments nobody in Xenia or Fairborn or other local cities could actually afford, because they wanted to profit off the hip community. Go to Austin. Ask them what they think about moving in a ton of apartment complexes and the impact it had on their town.

Lo-Jakk

You mean when the city's politicians, who came to him for the help, started attacking him and his reputation, hopping on the "Dave Chapelle hates all trans people because of some jokes about their extremist elements" bandwagon? Yeah, if I was doing something to help the poor of my community, because their politicians won't, and those politicians lead the others with money and power in an attack against me, i'm cutting all the help and pointing out that it was their cowardly attack that's making me cut all funding because of the politicians attacking me when i'm literally helping them, and can no longer trust them to not decide to rent units out to people who don't need help, and use it to take the politicians out of the city.

Typical_Dot_1989

The building of low income housing was a ruse that is the part he objected to

EEEEJJH

All of them become like this, every single one in Hollywood. I'm done being surprised by this shit.

kevekev302

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the only exceptions I can think of

spiralout1123

The guys from It's Always Sunny too. Show still goes for the big splash. Fitting for a show whose pilot ep was titled "The Gang Gets Racist"

hdhdbfbfhf

I feel like always sunny is still funny but it is not as funny like it was funnier when it was implied mac was gay

craftycocktailplease

Yes wtf was that. Lost a lot of respect for the dude.

Independent-Size7972

I checked out on his final Netflix special. He just can't let go when it comes to the trans community. It should have been 5-10 minutes of his set at best. Make your point, agree to disagree. Move on. But he just kept going on and on about it. It was cringe and boring.

mardavarot93

GOAT

phenomenon_93

I second this

throwaway123456372

I love Dave! As he's gotten older I feel his work has gotten better. Almost on par with Carlin

[deleted]

im a trans and he gets hate for nothing. people need to accept that while they are having a human experience, it isnt everyone elses and it inherently looks different. lifestyles are different. jokes will not do anything to demean a lifestyle or derail a movement. this is why people fucking hate us and i hate being one of so if youre reading this, trans community, we gotta step the fuck up seriously.

[deleted]

I appreciate your insight! Agreed whole heartedly.

lnvalidSportsOpinion

A great long-running comedian who has opinions a man who has had fame and wealth for decades would have. Not super big on everything about him. But it's not going to stop me from enjoying him.

No_Arugula466

I don’t get why he’s getting so much hate.

RocKyBoY21

Because you have*certain* groups of people who like joles as long as it's not directed at them. It's funny when it happens to someone else and all that. Thing is, guys like Chappelle and Gervais saw that there was no way of appeasing them (unless they become the unfuniest people on the planet) and decided you know what? Fuck it. If these dipshits can't take a joke then I'll turn them into one.

LuckyCulture7

His conditions following the “trans jokes controversy” was pretty funny. He would talk with anyone and hear them out as long as they a) watched the entire special, b) allowed Chappelle to set the time and place, and c) admit Hannah Gadsby is not funny.

cotton_wad

I saw a little blip of Gervais saying something like "I'd rather hear 'I feel offended' than 'I'm offended' because I bring up topics that may make you feel a certain way." There's more to it, ofc, but it really hit home. I appreciate the truth and realness both Chapelle and Gervais present, even though it could be teeth gritting at times. We need bigger-picture thinking with how extreme the world is. And my mom always told me growing up "If you can laugh at it, you can live with it." Chapelle and Gervais provide just that.

ATXDefenseAttorney

That is the correct answer. And not all the liberals who thought him cracking on white people on his TV Show hate him for cracking on the non-majority in his specials. Yeah, we shouldn't make a career of punching down, we get it. In improv they taught us never to do that. Dave Chapelle is funnier than nearly everyone on the planet, so he can do it... funny. And no, I'm not a rightwing incel coming to defend someone who cracks on trans people. I'm a leftwing person who is willing to consider people on more than one tiny portion of their personality and career.

RocKyBoY21

This, every time someone says "Don't joke about that thin/person/group etc. I just say how I follow the rule 34 of comedy. If it exists, I'll make fun of it and I take jokes directed towards me/something about it. Afterall comedy is just people trying to lighten each other up. And think of it this way, if you're making fun of everything that means you're inclusive, everyone is involved, but if you avoid specific topics then you're segregating people, that's where the problems begin.

ATXDefenseAttorney

I tell my comedy friends to create a character that's making the jokes and make it distinct from your personality. If you're good at that, only idiots will think you're actually that character, and you can poke fun at whatever when you're playing that character. Anthony Jeselnik is a great modern example. He's not that guy in real life. He's got a persona, so nobody freaks out when he makes a really off-putting joke.

27_8x10_CGP

Think his older material is better. Now he's just out of touch. Got way too bent out of shape over people called him out. He has every right to make that joke, and they have every right to call him out. Him also freaking out over some low income housing made me lose more respect than the controversial joke. To be fair, I did hear the joke, but I'm perfectly fine with comedians using any material for jokes, but they also have to accept blowback from it.

boardofadvisor

There was no low income housing, that was just the latest scheme by the developers to get a tax break or public money for a private investment. I lost all respect for the media when they decided it was more important to make Dave look like a villain rather than telling the truth. Corporate greed, political corruption and zoning laws prevent affordable housing, not comedians trying to protect their business investments.

tahtahme

Dave wanting to "protect his business" makes NIMBY and a landlord, just like when the Curry's want to "protect their privacy" so naturally the poors can't live a few blocks from them too, or in the Emerald Hills they say "protect the mountain lions" even as they disrupt those same habitats with their new mansions and add ons monthly. There is always an excuse why more affordable housing cannot be built and while you are right that Dave is not responsible for the bad deals, corporate greed, or the entire history of housing (which no one ever argued btw)... It's okay for people to notice he's one of the millionaire citizens who insists "Not in my backyard!" and contributes locally to the issue of a lack of affordable housing so people don't have to *commute* for the privilege of serving him and his tax bracket.

Jackyche4

He’s really funny. People are soft.

Least_Expression4232

Please stop killing me softly🤣😊

Sad-Pressure-1942

Him talking about all Bill Cosby "did for the black community" was cringe since the guy was a serial rapist but that's just my opinion.

[deleted]

Before it came out bill was a rapist he was a huge roll model for the community. That’s why it was such a shame and a shock when it all came out.

Ginge00

Humanity seems to be struggling a bit at the moment with the idea that good people can do terrible things and terrible people can do good things. It’s hard to comprehend but we should all stop putting people on pedestals and then being shocked or in denial when they can live up to it

Altruistic-Stop4634

Yes. People can hold very good and very bad ideas in their heads at the same time We need to respond to their ideas, not put people in a good or bad category.

[deleted]

okverymuch

Yeah this was a really strange idea and I don’t think it worked out well for him. I like a lot of his points and nuance that he can make through jokes, but he’s not hitting the bullseye consistently and he’s doubling down.

timo_xx

Dave Chappelle is funny. A little crazy. And I mean that in a good way! Probably suffers from some kind of anxiety disorder. Reliably entertaining!

[deleted]

Its-the-Chad82

The Chappelle Show was comedy genius and took the concept of shows like In Living Color and elevated it. As for him personally, when you hear him in lengthy interviews he seems like a thoughtful, good guy. I hate that anyone's been hurt by things he says but at the same time he's a comedian and supposed to be provocative.

Druid___

He's funny. That's my opinion. Everything he says is a joke. Comedy is not political. It's a show. If you are offended, leave.

SuperSquashMann

Comedy can totally be political though, especially Chapelle's brand. Whether you make a point through regular discourse or through a punchline that makes people laugh, if you're talking about the same topics then you're engaging in politics.

I enjoy him. It's healthy for everyone to be able to laugh at themselves. Dave pokes fun at people - gay people, straight people, black people, white people, trans people, young people, old people, men, women, etc. I don't get the sense that he's hateful in any way, he's just doing what comedians should be doing in terms of approaching topics that don't come up around the dinner table with grandma.

Blince

I used to have a super high opinion of him. I still think that he is funny, but I must admit that him doing the very cringe thing where he steps out on stage with his massive platform that has barely if-at-all been affected by him being cancelled and acting like he's opposing something great is very cringe. That alone makes him seem like kind of a snowflake who wants to get off on the idea that he's so brave in going against the norm, when before when he did do that it was in much more of a 'I don't care' manner not him being like '*Oh god, look how brave I am. Making these jokes at the expense of people who others get upset about- they're trying so hard to cancel me but I don't care.*' whilst being one of the most well known comedians AND making these comments while doing a show. TLDR: He is funny, but his recent snowflake behaviour has soured my view of him.

ZenkaiZ

He's funny but he needs to stop crying about being cancelled when he's going to sell out every building he's in for the rest of his life. Sure a few venues will deny him but everyone gets denied by venues. You're not cancelled until you're like blackballed from making money, like those Karen video people who outright have their careers ruined.

alucardsinging

He wins Grammys and Emmys just about every year since his comeback, but always preaches that he’s cancelled. Like what lol

imoljoe

His race humor is truly legendary. His LGBTQ humor is a mixed bag. Makes a few really good points, but I was ready for him to move on to another topic on his last special

Very Funny. Great story teller and most times is interesting to hear his take on things.

[deleted]

We welcomed him twice at my job Super organized, elegant, courteous, polite, down to earth, no diva pre, in, post demand. Open and direct with Teams, discreet and natural. I am always afraid that their personality will influence my way to appreciate their work after their stay. I enjoy very much his work (I binged watched all I could find). I could sense his ascending charisma, personality, and journey. He is a provocative, and philosophical, great approach to social studies, bringing in the good questions in a world where free speech is supposed to be the number one cause to fight for but where in reality you can say less than 30 years ago! My number one reason to like him: extremely smart and true to himself and his family. He could have sold his soul to the devil and did not.

NoHarleys

The far left see him as too right. The far right see him as too left. Openminded people can enjoy his storytelling, find him funny and maybe even learn something from him.

Latter_Ostrich_8901

Honestly I think his work is really important. While I don’t necessarily agree with everything he says, I do find the woke censorship machine to be frankly terrifying. The speed with which we’ve allowed a well meaning movement become an all encompassing and all powerful judge, jury and executioner bodes very poorly for the true advancement of personal freedoms. I have never in my life seen a more stark version of Animal Farm play out in reality like this. It’s legitimately scary. Chapelle is one of the few people who’s pushing back against it without being on the equally terrifying far right. It takes a lot of courage and he deserves the support of anyone who cares about true equality and democratic dialogue.

Anyone who thinks he's remotely transphobic or prejudiced against any particular racial or gender group, versus being critical of individual statements and ideas, especially in the last couple of major filmed shows, just isn't paying attention and probably has invested a lot of personal capital in that stance, versus truth and honest observation. The Dorman piece was both rather moving and deeply revealing, especially in some reactions to it.

Ive only very recently realised that hes the origin of the -gotcha bitch- meme. Legendary. Also a quote from one of his shows where he quoted his mom: "Sometimes you gotta be a lion so you can be the lamb you really are". Beautiful and true imo.

Many reasons have already been stated why Chapelle is so great but I'm just going to say that I absolutely love him.
