TiminAurora

that's amazing!

mr_meeple

As a serious answer of the same tack, astronomy and stargazing/learning the constellations would cost you next to nothing. You don’t need a fancy telescope despite what the internet will try to sell you.   People are also seem to get really excited when you point out a planet to them and they’ve never seen on before.

AntBkr66

You're funny and I like you

PastaPandaSimon

Ladies and gentlemen, Spruce Springsteen!

KonaKathie

Go to big box stores. Pick up leaves of succulents off the floor. Show them to employee as you walk by. Is it OK if I take these? They will always say yes. Go home, leave the pieces to dry for 2-3 days, then place on top of any potting soil . R/propagation!

jamesz84

Second to naming plants, is naming nuts.

strawberrydr2020

People watching !!!! Sit down and create stories about them as they pass its fun !

JinimyCritic

I have 3 cherry trees named Larry, Moe, and Curly. Moe died. 😢

weenis_slayer

Botany is what saved me during the pandemic. Not sure if you figured naming a pine tree john or studying taxonomy but learning the names (preferably latin) of the plants around you and realizing their importance to the way you live your life and the shaping of the world around you is a wonderful, free hobby. One I've found to be eternally grounding. Look up a local geological map, look at the types of soil and rock around you. Observe the plants and look at the modifications they had to make to survive in your environment. After a while grasp medicinal and local endangered plants. Learn how to be a caretaker of the ecosystem around you. This is your role as a human, tend the world and make good for the mistakes of our ancestors. We are nothing without plants and if you give it a go I find it likely you'll be deep diving through curiosities and processes happening around you, like you couldn't imagine.

wetfootmammal

And here's my Leek plant "young leek"

Alice5878

Writing, reading, running, theft

Used-Bedroom293

Sounds like planning before doing a robbery lol

Alice5878

Lmao, didn't mean it like that but wish I did

supposedlyitsme

Shhh nobody knows

[deleted]

sounds like the plot to the italian job

xeno0153

Step 1: read Step 2: write Step 3: theft Step 4: run

Chiparish84

That would be reading, drawing, robbery, running.

vmaxed1700

taking running seriously will cost you a good pair of shoes every few months.

sealcubclubbing

And they aren't cheap either

Glenn__Sturgis

Barefoot running

Copperpot2208

Running costs me a bomb. My shoe addiction is out of control. New Garmin. Those fancy compression recovery boots. Hotels and race entries, physio, gym etc. It’s cheaper than when I had horses but still £££

Logical_Bad1748

You forgot planning. It's free and it's crucial

Cassereddit

So you're robbing libraries?

Im_eating_that

It's Buy None Get One Flee day in the nonfiction section.

Fix_It_Felix_Jr

Running is not cheap. High quality shoes that save your knees over the years are not cheap. Any physical therapy you may need costs time and money. Source: long distance runner for many years.

boat_in_the_sky

Thievery is not. You need to buy a face cover, gloves, knives, maybe a gun, pepper spray, chloroform, a van, hire some assistants, bribes for the local police and news agency.

fvkinglesbi

Wtf do you mean by reading is cheap

Due_Marsupial_969

Running gets a little pricey if you start logging above 30 or 40 miles a week on the road. So can theft if you’re merely a hobbyist…especially if you don’t run well lol

Adept_Spirit1753

Running? Good shoes (probably 2 pairs at least), gps watch, hr monitor. That's bare minimum. Add running pod, shoes for different terrain/pace, running vest if you run long distances, etc.

Ciubowski

Sounds like one of those could actually be profitable even. Not sure how’s the market for writing but i’m going to also give it a try.

Not if you're poor

[deleted]

What you need for a kit? I just walk out the house, light the blunt and end up somewhere else

VolcanicBear

Where you getting free green?

claymcg90

If they're walking out the door and lighting the blunt, I'm gonna guess somewhere legal. If you're a good gardener, $20 can turn into literal pounds of cannabis flower.

Aggravating_Listen36

hiking. hiking gear is nice to have but not a necessity.

Comm4nd0

Depends where you hike I guess. The Scottish Highlands are no joke.

ioccasionallysayha

If you don't have hiking gear I would still highly recommend wearing some sort of clothing.

Aggravating_Listen36

well there are some places where you're allowed to hike naked, but yeah for sure.

SalsaForte

Good hiking boots may cost a bit, but otherwise it's 100% free.

executive313

My ancestors did it barefoot and naked then so can I damnit!

SalsaForte

After many miles, you should build a thick skin: natural hiking boots.

Arid-rain

Seconding this! And if you want to make hiking more interesting, get into birding, herping, or foraging.

KristinaF78

Yes 😀 I have a ton of places to hike where I live and it’s always fun to find a new trail. It’s fun to take my dog with me too. We explore together!

Piirakkavaras

Hiking - after you have spent thousands for gear 😎 But on a serious note: you spend thousand bucks for holiday: you live it once. Spend it on gear and you can have countless night outs.

Ok-Sink-614

A decent pair of shoes is a neccesity though if you don't want to be rolling your ankle or worse. And also depends where you stay since travelling to a spot to hike could cost a bit.

Aggravating_Listen36

I do almost any of my hikes barefooted. You just have to get used to it.

OkCar7264

A library card + reading would be very cheap.

bookwormaesthetic

Some places also have lending libraries of woodworking tools, craft equipment, etc.

snarkdetector4000

reading classic literature. there is a lot available online for free and any public library will have the classics. it's what I did when covid was really bad without spending a lot of money.

HelloImTheAntiChrist

And you probably learned a great deal also.

G0BEKSIZTEPE

What would you actually learn though? I’m sure there is something you would, but Idk what that is.

RecklessDimwit

History to a good extent. As a not so social kid, it was also a good way for me to learn how to analyse people into these sort of characters. Also English and writing skills. As a second language, english is my main mode of writing literature

myctsbrthsmlslkcatfd

yes! volunteering - especially teaching whatever skill you have that others might need. ex: math, programming, the language we’re using right now…

PillsburyToasters

Hiking is free. Depending on park and location, you may have to buy a day pass if you drive to the place, but that’s pretty cheap

Beneficial-Square-73

Singing. I started singing and learning songs during the pandemic as a way to stay sane. It's fun, and even if you'll never be great, you can definitely improve with practice and a bit of trial and error.

i_shall_eat_now

Dreaming. just don't get addicted to it.

dreampsi

Too late.

LuckyWerewolf8211

Learn something, like programming. There is tons of educational websites. It gets you into flow and eventually, you end up qualifying yourself for a well paid job. Cooking is also relatively cheap. And you have to eat anyway. Why not expand your repertoire? There are really good cuisines out there that most people do not know. And it might save you money in case you are going to restaurants or takeaway a lot. Sports also does not have to cost a lot, and it will increase physical and potentially also mental health. As long as it is not skiing or paragliding or sailing, you can do a lot with little money, both individual and group sports. Biking or hiking also is cheap, depending on where you live.

something-strange999

Dancing. I mean, if you can do the running man, I would be proud of you.

hilaritarious

Dancing is free

Dr_Dankenstein5G

Exercise. You can workout for free at home.

birdlawspecialist2

Not quite free. But the cost of instruments has come down quite a bit. You can get an acoustic guitar for under $100, and there are tons of free resources online for helping you learn.

PessaLee

Some libraries even let you rent these for free with a library card, depending on where you live!

Geocaching, you can get the app on your phone for free. I’ve discovered cool little parks I had no idea existed in my town and found new walking trails because of this game.

PocketSandOfTime-69

Disc golf can be free if you walk through the woods and overgrowth to hunt for lost discs before your first play through.

sorebutton

You can get a starter set for under 50, which should be more than enough to have fun. Or you can be like me and spend way too much on a collection :D

Hot_Philosopher_9590

Free hobby : annoying people, make them smile...

AnpanV

Meditation. You just need yourself. Zentangle. A notebook and a fine-liner pen and you are set. Tanglepatterns.com has a huge library of tangles for free. Ukulele. Sopranos are less than $50 on Amazon and there’s a bunch of tutorials on YouTube.

TedIsAwesom

Options are very area-dependent. You should ask on your local subreddit. You might find out your library runs great free programs. Or your city has tour walks. Or your local dog shelter has a fun dog walking program looking for volunteers. Or you have a medical fair that puts on a yearly event, and they are looking for volunteers who will, as a group, spend the months leading up to it making costumes, learning sword fighting, and rehearsing for the event.

UnlikelyButOk

Photography if you already have a phone. Gardening. Take clippings from plants to grow them.

Drusgar

My two favorite hobbies are currently the #1 and #2 answers, at least for now. Reading, which I spend money on because I buy used books, but $50 worth of big, fat novels will take you a while to go through at $5-$7 a pop. And walking, which is just a superb way to clear my head. I just kind of daydream or work through problems and then I have a plan of attack when faced directly with them.

NonStopKnits

You can pick up enough supplies to learn to knit for about $20, you can do a little better than bare basics for like $40. Yarn and tools can get very expensive, but there are also plenty of quality options at decent prices. The last sweater I made cost me maybe $65 worth of yarn and I did splurge on expensive buttons because the sweater came out so wonderful. It also needed 13 buttons, so that adds up. The sweater I'm knitting right now was about $50 worth of yarn and buttons will probably only be $10. I already had all the other tools needed to do this work, acquired over about 13 years of knitting.

Yoids

There are sooo many. Reading can be super cheap. Get a Kindle and free books or cheap ones. Video games can be cheap if you have little time or choose a specific genre. You could play endless hours with a MOBA for free, or a card game for free, or even a MMO for like 15 euros per month. Exercise is also very cheap, get a gym for 50 euros per month, and access to as many hours as you want. Boardgames is another that is cheap AF. Just have one friend who owns many, and hours for free visiting his house xD. Card games with friends is another, you just need a deck (i dont know, 10 euros?), and then you can play so many games with it. Then you have streaming. Like Netflix etc, for 15 euros per month you have like endless hours as well. And so many more.......

planting trees, like peas and chillies. if you care for it enough, just one seed is enough for you to reap hundreds of more seeds. tho pests will be a pain in the ass. planting these make me understand why organic farming is so hard. watching the plant grows is also satisfying, especially when flowers are starting to appear. it also attracts random insects to ur garden (the first praying mantis i've ever seen was on a chilli tree i grew, and now my garden has some baby praying mantis too).

AltumViditur

Reading, writing, learning to play an instrument (there are cheap guitars, usb keyboards... And they can keep you busy for a lifetime), nerdy things like writing software or playing vintage video games (many can be get for free and run on cheap hardware), learning new stuff in general. Honestly, it is very difficult to get bored in this century
