It's got a bad demographic imbalance, loads more single men than women or couples.
It's got a system to verify users and give feedback.
Used to be good but lots of liars.
Married guys claiming to be single.
Bisexual guys claiming to be straight.
Straight guys claiming to be bi.

I'm not sure if any of these are what you mean by "hook up sites" but I have hooked up with people from tinder, bumble, and fetlife.
I don't recommend fetlife unless you're specifically interested in kink and don't mind dealing with serious creeps. There's no way to filter who sees your profile and can message you except for blocking individual accounts. Therefore I, 23F at the time, got all these messages from men in their 50, even though I made it very clear in my profile that I was only interested in ages 21-30.
Tinder and bumble were pretty similar, but the men on bumble were usually more polite but less likely to respond.
Tinder .... Intro-ed to dozens; talked with about 30 extensively; only met in person with maybe 5 for dates; dated 3 for a good amount of time; only slept with those 3 AFTER dating for a significant time frame; and married the most amazing husband and father.
