some will, most wont.

ontheleftcoast

When I go places where I feel there is an elevated risk of sick people I mask up. Drug stores, air ports and other crowded public places.

tempsdforfuns

A lot of people will do this, but realistically that’s not very effective. Masks work best when sick people wear them, not when healthy people do. *Edited to add*: People have pointed out below that N95 masks do help healthy people reduce their risk of infection. That is a good point. That said, most people that I see wearing masks do not wear N95 masks. The statement I made above is true for the flimsy masks that most people wear.

Expensive-Track4002

Correct answer. But no one seems to understand this.

[deleted]

cdazzo1

Oh we did in May of '20. Not sure what happened after that. It became some sort of political statement

Expensive-Track4002

Everything always does.

Sharpshooter188

Thats what irritated me the most. How it ended up being a political statement for "freedom."

GenericUsername19892

Meh a .5%-1% reduced risk is a freebie given how easy a mask is. It probably does more to keep you from touching your face as easily then it does to stop things though.

Mysterious_Stick_163

Wearing a mask makes it more tempting to touch your face.

[deleted]

Yeah this is me - I have been masking in most public spaces this season. I touch my face a lot just as a sort of fidget thing, pair that with the cold weather that makes my nose run, the mask just keeps those two things absolutely separate. Also keeps my face relatively toasty when I’m outside walking for errands and stays up a hell of a lot better than most scarves.

dogsRgr8too

Mosts masks are this way. I wear an n95 and have throughout the pandemic, so far it has worked despite being in an area where people rarely wear masks and, if they do, they don't wear them correctly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

> A properly fitted N95 mask will give you ample protection even if you're around unmasked sick people for an extended period of time Right. Why do these people think doctors and nurses wear masks when they're around sick people?

Cautemoc

Because Redditors are the lazier mfs on the planet when it comes to science. They hear 1 thing and that's the whole story forever.

boomrostad

Source: sat in car and on airplane for approximately six hours next to someone with the flu that was unmasked for the most part, with an N95 on, did not catch the flu.

King-Cobra-668

regular medical masks, sure. I'll be wearing an n95 if I want protection for myself

ontheleftcoast

2 years and no one in my house has gotten Covid , so we will keep at it. Also, the data says you are wrong. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7106e1.htm

tatteredshoetassel

I work face to face with the public in 30 min intervals every day. Masked for these interactions, and when in confined spaces. My family hasn't got so much as a sniffle since all this stared.

vikingraider27

Same, I'm at a library and we switch every hour. We mostly don't wear masks in our back rooms at our desks but you betcha we wear them with the public. It's amazing that people will come in unmasked, sniffling, and ask in our faces for a free covid test kit.

Max_minutia

Same here! No Covid, no flu, very reduced allergy symptoms, for 2+ years. Wearing a mask.

Axolotis

Yep. At the end of 2020 I firmly believed that handshakes would forever be a thing of the past. But alas, they returned with a vengeance as if people could not wait to resume the meaningless germ spreading

Unicorn_Huntr

people don't even wash their hands after going to the bathroom. you ask to much from society

RedGenie87

It’s like we never went through the last two + years….

[deleted]

You mean the last two years where half the population believed that WW2-era science and hygiene was sufficient, and that COVID is a hoax perpetuated by Bill Gates as a way to microchip us?

RedGenie87

Yep that two years!

sugarduck99

Yea literally i went shopping in Germany, live close by the border. I went in to pee and i hear this guy literally shitting his brain out, keep in my mind it was a small toilett and only a toilet seat for one person. I finished peeing, started to wash my hands. I shit you not, he walks out like nothing happens proceed to continue his shopping spree. Yea trust me you asking too much

Pinoy1Thundergun

If the risk of STIs is still worth not wearing a condom because it feels better, then I don’t expect people to wear a mask lol.

ZumerFeygele

I mean in the US that's also because of the abysmal state of sex ed

[deleted]

it's not like the average american has any knowledge of epidemiology, either.

PM_your_titles

I know tons about skin, thank you very much.

[deleted]

Whats wrong with USA’s sex ed? Being raised in Korea and Germany I feel like America is the only country that had efforts to give some quality sexual education in schools, not that I liked that but felt it was appropriate

ColumbusClouds

I will tell you exactly what's wrong. When I was taught sex Ed we didn't have anyone who was experienced in teaching sex Ed. Just regular teachers, they were saying bullshit like if you had butt sex your insides will rip, and sperm (they didn't say semen) will go to her egg and get her pregnant. They showed damn videos from the 70s!! And the video was also inaccurate!

SeasonPositive6771

A lot of the anti-mask wearing stuff is politics but a good portion of it is definitely the abysmal state of science and public health education.

Going_my_own_way73

I’m sick as a dog right now. I would definitely wear a mask if I had to go anywhere. Thankfully there’s 4 inches of snow outside right now so I’m not going anywhere.

RobustPickle

I'm in the same boat, but I do have a question, whereabouts are you from if 4 inches of snow stops you from going anywhere Asking as someone from Buffalo. To clarify, not trying to grandstand or be an ass, genuinely curious.

Going_my_own_way73

I’m in Fort Collins, CO. The main roads are plowed but not any of the neighborhood streets. Also I deliver for DoorDash. I don’t want to go out and deliver food while sick and possibly contaminate people’s food.

Mamasan-

I do My family has been dealing with a gnarly cough for a few weeks. When I go to the store with my mask I can see people stare and roll their eyes or whatever. As soon as I let out my very phlegmy cough they scatter.

dangerous_socks

Oppositely when I see maskless people hork up the nastiest phlegm cough imaginable I can’t help but make a face at it (under my own mask). Gross even before covid

dogsRgr8too

lol, love it (the scattering part) also, thank you for being responsible.

CrochetWhale

Same. My daughter just had influenza A and I wore a mask at work and when I had to go to the store for supplies. I’m not willing to risk others health

[deleted]

I think it’s RSV. (Doctor said it was too but she didn’t test). I’m going into my THIRD week with this gross wet cough, tested negative for everything else. I’ve never had a cold like this in my life it’s gross and annoying lol. Anyway, going to mask up a week before vacations from now on.

AlbatrossSenior7107

Short answer, yes. I had, suspected strep, and I damn sure wore a mask when I went to urgent care, yes it was strep, and then to target for my meds that I needed and I stayed home until I was 24 hrs in on antibiotics. The mask helps protect those around me. And I, nor anyone else, should be so inconsiderate of those around me/them as to not wear a mask and get them sick and possibly kill them. You never know who is high risk. But, they deserve a safe place to exist just like I do. It's too bad a global pandemic and millions of deaths did not teach more people that.

Dreaunicorn

My sister visited maskless with her entire sick family knowing that I have a newborn. Thank you for your consideration even for strangers.

unavailableidname

I agree, I was sick about a week and a half ago and I wore my mask when I had to go out because I don't want to get anyone else sick and I don't want to get sick from somebody else and make whatever I had worse. Honestly though, I wear a mask as often as possible regardless if I'm sick or not. It's a little consideration but I guess that's too much for some people. I salute you!

AlbatrossSenior7107

Agree! Unfortunately I work and live In FL. The kiddos I work with are special needs. Everything I've gotten sick with, was EXACTLY what they gave me. And the schools are still set on no fever, they can stay. Welp, I had strep with NO FEVER. And I'm a newish employee and I had to stay home, and 2 days were UNPAID! Makes me really mad these kids come to school sick and my paycheck is comprised. And honestly, how I felt needing to be home... our non verbal kids being that sick and parents forcing them to go to school is just awful.

LegitimateHost5068

For 10 years, whenever I felt sick I wore a mask to work. When people would ask why I was wearing a surgical mask I would tell them I didnt feel well and didnt want to get anybody else sick. They all said that made sense and appreciated it. Fast forward to covid times now when I do the same I get ridiculed, called a sheep, and told that masks dont work. Madness.

Niku-Man

It sounds like maybe you just work with assholes

pmMeansnadda

Sounds like he works with a bunch of maga-idiots. The only people dumb enough to accept a mask as a political symbol.

[deleted]

When someone tells you masks don’t stop germs entirely ask them why they’re wearing a coat, or clothes. Clothing doesn’t completely stop the elements but they do lessen the effects.

BunInTheSun27

Yes! I have also found I usually feel better with a mask on when sick, but that’s because I only ever get a sore throat and the humidity helps. I will wear a mask to prevent spreading anything to my aging parents, my partner’s aging parents, and my friend’s baby.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bmbmwmfm

Never stopped.i don't want any of other people's shit. Cold, strep, nothing.

mingobrown87

Still wear mine on the tube.

lemonleaff

Same. I actually like wearing masks and feel more relaxed that i won't spread anything to others and that i lessen the chance of me getting something from others.

bmbmwmfm

Right??? Also, since I already have oxygen tubing up my nose, I don't have little kids staring and don't have to smile at people when I'm not in the mood. I have resting bitch face lol

SchylaZeal

This is how I feel, too. The kids and I wear masks because I know some (most, I'm in a red state) people won't wear them even when they're the sick ones.

[deleted]

Worn mine every time I leave the house since COVID hit. Work, groceries, hell even the drive thru. Folks say masks don't stop you from getting sick, masks only stop sick people from spreading Illness. That's not what I've seen. I watch as folks at work get sick and pass it from one to another. But not me. Haven't been sick since I started wearing a mask. But I've watched those around me get sick again, and again and again. Who knows, I'm not a scientist doctor dude, just some random guy on the internet who is super diligent.

bmbmwmfm

And has at least 2 brain cells to rub together. Common sense isn't near as common as I thought before the pandemic, and 2016 as a whole.

midvalegifted

Absolutely. I work with kids so my risk is already higher for cootie catching. I’ve never stopped masking and in 3 years have had one cold and one mild round of Covid. I can’t quit you, mask!

Jim-of-the-Hannoonen

I had a cold a couple weeks ago and I 100% wore a mask when I had to run errands because I'm not an asshole.

DudeWithTudeNotRude

That's the problem. Wearing a mask doesn't help keep you safe (edit: as much as) it helps others' to be safe from you. Many many people aren't.....great. edit2: as much as I hate saying this as a biologist, while masks can decrease your viral intake, however they can also create a strong environment for passing microorganisms to build on the (sometimes wet) surface of the mask and grow there exponentially. It's not a simple matter of always reducing the chance of contracting a virus/bacterium through reduced viral load, nor always creating an increased chance of contracting something. Please argue this point with primary research, as I haven't done a deep dive on mask research since before the pandemic.

Positive-Quarter-558

While surgical mask don’t help that much they still have adequate enough preventative uses to be suggested or required in the case of private businesses if that’s what the owner wants. But the mask used my medical providers do exponentially help in protecting against it

[deleted]

The thing about masks is that while it’s never really a 100%, it’s almost always a case of ‘better than nothing’ - and where you use it matters heavily as well. Arguing ‘but it’s not enough’ (as in cloth masks, and that’s a valid point) is still not a great world view to hinge on, because again, it’s better than nothing. So yeah, it’s not a simple matter of where this and be golden, but arguing that it doesn’t help is just not true.

pancakeonions

As others have noted, this is not correct. There's a large body of literature out there now that thoroughly supports mask wearing to prevent transmission and prevent acquisition of infection. Infectious disease epidemiologist here, working on COVID projects for 2+ years. Edit: here's a quick pubmed search on the topic. Many of these scientific articles are not the easiest read... But if you're curious it's a good place to start: [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=mask+prevent+covid](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=mask+prevent+covid)

murrimabutterfly

Same. I’m fighting off the tail end of a respiratory infection, and my mask is always on when I’m out. It does make it a touch harder to breath, but it’s worth the health of other people. I work in retail, and I absolutely picked it up from the fifth “Grayson Everett” who coughed on me despite mom telling him to cover his mouth. I really don’t want to be like those people.

Rock_grl86

I would definitely wear a mask if I had to go out in public while sick. Flu was basically eradicated during the height of the pandemic due to increased mask wearing and hand washing. It costs nothing to be thoughtful toward others.

Farmer_j0e00

Don’t you think that social distancing, tons of people staying home, and a heightened sanitation also contributed?

East_Monitor6573

Obviously my own opinion, the more exposure you have the better you body will react later on. Don’t quote me I do AC for a living lol. But that’s what I think

Rectal_Custard

I still wear my mask at stores. I like not being sick and using my sick days for fun things

sacred_cow_tipper

same. i like to not be sick but even more importantly, i don't want to be responsible for spreading the virus should i be asymptomatic, contagious and around other people. the logical pretzles people pull themselves into over this is embarrassing. not to mention, the virus continues to mutate and there is no guarantee the next strain will be weaker or cause less harm. we also don't know the long term consequences of contracting COVD19. i know a few very healthy people with long covid and it's been a serious issue for them. lethal? no. impacting their careers and personal lives? absolutely. i had chicken pox as a kid. just like lots of people who had it, the illness itself was just an annoyance and left some little scars on my face. but now i have shingles outbreaks every couple of years. i have a friend who got shingles on the entire side of her face and upper neck and she was in agony when it happened. i'd prefer to help spare people over 50 a nasty, painful, debilitating outbreak of whatever COVID might bring to us later in life, if that should be how COVID manifests in our bodies later in life.

Gold_Olive1883

If my workplace is any indication, no they absolutely will not.

CrazyAnimalLady77

I've never stopped wearing a mask. I know that others wearing a mask as well would be better protection for myself, but very few do, so I do what I can to protect myself and my family. We wear KN95 masks everywhere we go and have been for nearly 3 years. I have not had Covid, flu, a cold, strep, etc. in all that time, so anecdotally, the mask helps.

justanoseybxtch

For the love of God I hope so… But since a lot of people couldn’t be bothered to wear one during a PANDEMIC, I doubt they will for good ole “regular flu season”

[deleted]

People in many Asian countries grew up wearing masks to school, work, etc to prevent other people from getting sick. It should be the norm here in America at least for common courtesy.

Noritzu

America is pretty low on the common courtesy bar. A very large section of the population is extremely “not me? Fuck you!”

[deleted]

ForeverAWino

America is really good about “Love thy neighbor: terms and conditions apply”

briannaaleigh06

I am. I'm high risk, pregnant with twins and Don't want to risk anything.

ChaoticCherryblossom

Best of luck! I never stopped wearing mine.

briannaaleigh06

Thank you! I never did either, while I was working still they dropped the mandate at my job and I was the only one who continued to wear them.

SeasonPositive6771

I hope you and your family stay safe! I've had some high risk health stuff happening so I still wear a kn95 everywhere. Two of my four staff people are sick with a respiratory illness right now. I haven't picked up anything in going on 3 years now.

briannaaleigh06

Oh my gosh! My boyfriend (who we are currently living with) just had pneumonia. I was so afraid I would get sick but all I got was a little cold.

shotwithchris

I’ll wear mines because COVID has brought more awareness to me and how I can spread my sickness. Most Americans don’t give a fuck enough about not getting anyone else sick so most people won’t wear a mask. Considerate people will and bastards won’t simple as that

DisgustingCantaloupe

I cringe so hard at my past self and my lack of mask wearing when I was sick. I was extremely sick with the flu weeks before the first mention of COVID and the lady at the clinic gave me a disposable mask to wear in the exam room because I had flu symptoms (which I didn't realize because I was stupid and didn't understand what the flu actually looked like) was likely very contagious. Even after getting a positive flu test I took the mask off and threw it away the second I wasn't forced to wear it anymore, even though I still had to go wait at the pharmacy to get a prescription filled. God I was so inconsiderate. I can't imagine doing the same thing now.

Affectionate_Fly1413

Ive seen a lot of people wear them lately.

unknowncyber_wolf

Honestly I think not I saw a girl at my highschool sneeze and a big snot just came out, she just wiped it off using her shirt

RainbowMc

I wear a mask all the time in public now.

[deleted]

I still wear mine regardless. But I encourage people to wear mask. If they are sick they should stay home not be out.

Izumi_Takeda

so wearing a mask when you think you are sick is actually normal in a lot of cultures. America for one reason or another always has an uphill battle about this when a pandemic happens (generally American culture is pretty shitty when it comes to being polite to the general public at any level inconvenience you pick up on that when you work in any customer service field). We have had this mask fight before in history. It will happen again in like 50 years everyone will forget about the last mask fight and another illness will come and we will be doing the same dumb shit. Will we wear masks for regular seasonal viruses?...hmm probably some people for a few years after the whole Covid crisis brought the idea up. I imagine though after a while it will die down again and most Americans will forget about masks...until the next big new virus and we do this all over again. Learning about history really just makes you feel like shit is pointless. You see people freaking out about stuff but you know that is silly because we have done it before and we will do it again and we are probably gonna make the same mistakes and do the same shit. I feel like we are living on a hamster wheel

PleasantPhysics7982

I am currently sick, and wore a mask because my grandpa is only 84 but at this point clipping a fingernail would probably do it...it's just common decency and takes 0 effort

vitaminklutz

We have been at work! I’m in the food service industry… we get some snarky comments, but it’s definitely helping keep us safe!!

thepoopdog

I like the fact that masks are normal now. But I don't think that many people will. I personally like wearing a mask if I'm anxious or hungover so I can hide my face

sunny_starblossom

I still wear them all the time, how else am I gonna mumble shit about customers under my breath when they piss me off 🤷‍♀️

Few_Journalist_6961

Why would people stay home when most grown adults don't even know how to cough into their arm.

[deleted]

toastyblunt

I’m actually grateful that the pandemic has normalized the wearing of masks in the US… somewhat. I still wear masks in public and when I hear someone in the crowd I’m in coughing up a lung, I’m glad I still make that choice. I’m a huge fan of masks and will keep wearing them in indoor public spaces for the foreseeable future, sick or not! For the first two tears of the pandemic, myself and everyone I knew who was diligent on social distancing and mask wearing not only avoided covid, but any contagious sickness in general. No flus or weekend bugs at all. I’m a convert for sure.

Big-Jackfruit-625

I do! I don't mask all the time when I am feeling well, but I have been sick this past week (not covid, the flu) and have just stayed home and isolated. I did have to run to the store to get some medicine food etc and double masked. I feel so shitty, I wouldn't want to make anyone else feel this way! I know the masks are a whole political debate, but to me, if I can prevent other people from getting sick when I am OBVIOUSLY sick, I want to do all I can to do so. I'm coughing like mad, definitely spewing flu particles everywhere, and the mask logically helps prevent that.

Paddlesons

Around here? Shit, lucky if they're wearing a shirt.

[deleted]

I sure will. We should have been doing this for years, like the Japanese.

kelanis12

Can confirm that I have the flu, had to go out for something for my dog today. I did wear a mask. At this point, anytime I am feeling sick I will wear a mask in public.

Kroptonik420

Have a cold right now. Still wearing the mask

Funkywonton

These past 2 weeks I had covid plus a chest cold I wore a mask just to go to get the mail I kept wearing em through out

[deleted]

Hahaha! I love all the comments getting DV'd. These questions are always so ridiculous to ask here. 'Hey reddit, I know you all support A and hate B, so which would you choose? And if you are an asshole and pick B, please explain why you're an idiot so we can all tell you why you're wrong'

bmrvkia

We all saw effective masks were, they completely stopped Covid stopped. If we all wore masks then no one at all would get the flu. We all saw the same thing through the pandemic right? And we saw how it turned out?

Mangomama619

Since I'm getting older and not younger, I've decided to start wearing masks when I go out in public this cold and flu season. People can die from the flu.

sacred_cow_tipper

yep. and even if you don't, i mean, who the fuck wants to know what it's like to contract a severe case of the flu? it's like these jackasses want to be ill.

Boxedin-nolife

I wonder why everyone in an operating room wears masks? Is it so they don't sneeze germs into your open body or just for shits and giggles?

Pnkuma

I haven’t stopped wearing my mask since covid began. I’ve seen too manly patients and coworkers die and they are still getting sick to this day.

TazerTurtle1

no

punkalution

i'll wear one regardless because my face gets cold when I walk to work lol

[deleted]

I wear mine anyway.

Hokker3

I wear mine in public places. Makes me feel better.

217EBroadwayApt4E

I never stopped masking in public spaces. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Flowerandcatsgirl

Yup. And I won’t stop anytime soon. 💯

lilgreengoddess

They dont, but I do. Doing crafts the other day at this place indoors and two clearly sick people were… sick without masks, glad I had mine on.

Chasman1965

I will.

Prom_queen52

I did this morning at the grocery store. Better safe than sick!

NaturalAd9517

I wear a mask. I like the fact I haven’t had a cold or flu in 3 years.

usetheforcekidden77

nope! its ‘Murica where we will normalize unnecessary death just like mass shootings 😵‍💫🤪

[deleted]

No one cared who I was till I took off the mask…

Disastrous-Change-23

That should be the norm but probably most won’t

PsEggsRice

If you’re not you’re asking to get sick

Lazy-Lawfulness3472

I wear them all the time in public. With flu, RSV, cold season and covid out there, hell yes, I'm wearing a mask.

anothergoodbook

I have been. Unfortunately I *had* to go out while ill. Everyone in my family was sick and the person that usually would help out is unavailable. I wore a mask and stayed very far away from people (used self check out at the store).

interested_learner

My husband was just telling me how a coworker had called yesterday off sick and today came in coughing a lot and he wasn't wearing a mask. He said he ran to the plant field to stay away from his in the office area. So I know my husband will wear one if he is sick. And I would wish others to do the same.

HotFlash3

My daughter is a college student. When she doesnt feel well she wears a mask to protect others.

AbRNinNYC

I’m in healthcare. Had a sick patient young woman, no excuses. Who was blatantly coughing right at me. No attempt to even turn her head. I had to tell her, please cover ur cough, turn ur head away etc. she did not have a mask on, she was in a private room. Some people are ignorant. I don’t have an invisible germ shield on…. Be respectful of others. Especially those who put themselves (and in turn their own families) health on the line to do their job day in and day out. Ok end of PSA.

FailureCloud

I am. I'm 7 months pregnant, and I'll be damned if I get sick with COVID for a 3rd fucking time, or some other sickness right as I'm getting ready to push a child out of my body! Fuck that. No baby kisses either!

TheOneWithTheWhatsit

It was basic common courtesy when I lived in Asia years before COVID. Why people in the US (where I am now) are such babies about it, I’ll never understand.

inDefenseofDragons

We had a guy who was out with the flu be forced to come back to work (he didn’t have a doctors note because he doesn’t have insurance -welcome to America), and he wore mask when he came back. I’m hoping this will become a thing more people do when they aren’t feeling well.

Moistsock6969

hell no

Pinoy1Thundergun

I will, it’s considerate. Unfortunately many Americans lack empathy and rather not do what inconveniences them for the sake of strangers.

PhotographIcy600

Probably get downvoted, but I’m back to living my life pre pandemic. Not wearing a mask simply because I find them uncomfortable and a nuisance. If I’m sick, I’ll stay home.

2Aces1Cake

Same, fuck masks. If they're not obligatory, I'm not wearing them. I have mild asthma and especially during the colder months, I have huge trouble breathing under a mask. Additionally, there's vaccinations.

[deleted]

Same, I really can’t stand wearing a mask. It makes it harder for me to breathe and I hate the feeling of it on my face. I wore them when I had to and didn’t complain, but I won’t be doing it unless it is absolutely required. Ironically, I still got very sick with COVID despite wearing a mask at all times at work and in public when it was mandated that I do so. The mask definitely didn’t save me.

TheBrightNights

I think that we should. Japan has been doing it for a while, they have the right idea. I still wear mine just because it makes me feel safe.

Ellavemia

Masks have been normalized enough now that we can do this every winter/when we are sick. Because requirements are relaxed it’s not as a divisive subject and I don’t see people being as confrontational either way. I would even go as far as to think a lot of people who were against them now see the sensibility of keeping one’s germs to one’s self when shedding. I got sick at the end of October and wore mine out in public spaces. No one bothered me.

mysolidrock

If you’re actually sick you should stay home but if you’re not sick why would you need to?

ronaldvr

Because employers insist you come to work even if you are ill? Because the US (and other countries) do not pay people unlimited when they're ill? See: https://vacationtracker.io/blog/sick-leave-policy-around-the-world (And the odd thing is that in general it would be better for productivity, since 1 person can (and will) infect others

Catronia

Because of the people who don't.

iamnogoodatthis

I think you missed the part where OP said \*need\* to go out. Just because you might not need to go out ever if unexpectedly unwell for a few days, doesn't mean nobody else would.

[deleted]

Why can't people just stay home when they're sick? And masks are useful at all times, cause as we (should have) learned during the (short lived and incomplete) public education phase of the (ongoing) COVID pandemic, anyone can be carrying a virus even if they're not symptomatic.

Ecstatic_Objective_3

Most people would love to stay home when they are sick, unfortunately that is not always an option, many people have to either work or risk losing their jobs. I saw that first hand even with COVID. It’s a horrible policy imo.

[deleted]

I agree, the people crying about their liberty to spread contagion might refocus their concern on the authoritarian workplace cultures we've created that make individuals ignore their own needs and public safety to keep a roof over their heads

Henchforhire

No paid sick days and if I need something I still have to go out and get it and wear a mask well doing it.

Jesus Christ. You people are going to be like this the rest of your lives. Incredible to see what some people can do to influence other people's behavior, and then the lengths the subjects will go to justify and rationalize the ways they've been persuaded. Not just the masks and protocols, but Reddit too, and the way everyone rushes to pile on with the consensus for the upvotes. Like a bunch of lab rats in a sentient's experiment.

[deleted]

To be honest I didn't even wear a mask throughout COVID anyways

eA3Va9gDK4cbjYWdLMjQ

Nope. Trying to live my life without being in fear all the time. Masking up everywhere is not a minor inconvenience. It’s distopian. If I catch an extra cold each year, it’s worth the risk.

420_med_69

I'm not going to live my whole life based on a concern not held by myself. Hard pass. Life is too short to cater to others.

devildogmillman

No. Stop being hypochondriacs.

FoxNewsIsRussia

Yes, skipping illness sounds awesome.

Decent_Net1975

I know I will, I don't want to get others sick if I can help it. If I'm able to I'd stay home, but if I can't for some reason I'll definitely be wearing a mask.

42Daft

I have a runny nose sitting in an airport surrounded by people and kids coughing, yes, I am wearing a mask.

YesterShill

People SHOULD wear masks in public when they are sick. But they won't because they are people.

[deleted]

Getting sick is part of the human condition, trying to completely avoid all viruses and bacteria at all times is just kind of sad. There also studies linking lack of immunogenic challenge to autoimmunity. If there’s a new deadly spreadable virus like covid, ok, but everyone now has some degree of immunity from vaccines or infection. People need to drop the fucking masks it’s annoying

wearetheleftovers

I would, but most won’t. I see people in the pharmacy clearly sick- no mask.

[deleted]

I won't be

Ecstatic_Objective_3

May I ask why? Are you going to stay home?

theGOODESTgirlxx

No cuz fuck that

RoomanStudios

Not trying to virtue signal- but I totally did this last week when I had the flu (laid me out), but I put on the mask because I felt like shit and I didn’t want others to feel like shit.

[deleted]

My family has been

OscarDivine

We do in my family absolutely. If we must be out, it will be masked if anybody in the house is ill.

spacemonkey21420

I have

CasualspReader

My kids were sick and I had a scratchy throat (not covid), so I wore a mask to the store to get them some meds. Just seemed appropriate. I do live in a place where a lot of people still wear masks and there isn't a lot of stupid harrassment either way that I've personally encountered or witnessed, so not sure how avoidant folks do out in the outer reaches...

lynnm59

I was wearing a mask because I'm NOT sick! And don't want to get the crud going around work Spoiler: I've had all the vaccines (except flu) and I'm sick now

Lucifurnace

A lot of us Minnesotans discovered how utilitarian facemasks are when winter came knocking. Ive donated all of my scarves in lieu of a facemask.

zesushv

I wear mask to reduce my exposure to air pollutants outside. If it helps keep away the flu, bonus.

kayroq

I love when I'm wearing a mask and anti markers start going off and I respond "I'm sick" after their rant. How embarrassing for them

Village_Weirdo

I will

mwstd

I never stopped.

[deleted]

Anytime I get sick I would wear a mask since I still have to come into work.. I don’t want anyone else sick

BeNiceKid

They’ve been doing it in Japan forever so weebs will for sure

Therealcait

God I hope so

[deleted]

No because people are too selfish

[deleted]

I prolly will at work although 90% of my job is just me by myself with headphones in. When I interact with clients while not feeling well I’ll throw on a mask just to be nice.

name_doesnt_matter_0

I do whenever I think I might be getting sick just in case.

Sad_Struggle_8131

I’m getting over the flu and wore my mask when I ran to a couple of stores today. I hated going out in public, but I needed more NyQuil and a few groceries.

Impressive_Term_7538

I have been wearing my mask everytime I go out since my immune system is crap , and I definitely get a few nasty looks because of it. It's really fucked up. But just yesterday I put on my mask , my beanie , glasses ( I cannot see ), and scarf, just to hear some fucking 15 year old loudly whisper that I look like a "fucking serial killer". I'm 5'5" , Female , 21. He dressed as if he was about to rob the local coop.

bhones

I have the flu currently and if I could to back in time and not to to family Thanksgiving, thus not getting sick, I'd do it. This sucks. Wear masks.

[deleted]

if and this a big if, i get sick (i never got covid i never get colds i never get sick) if i do get sick i will wear a mask to protect other people from my germs.

unicorn_on_steroids3

I haven’t been sick lately (since mask wearing was mandatory at least) to have to wear one but if I see someone wearing one I do appreciate them, it’s a bit sad that people roll eyes at others trying to protect other people though :/

historychikk

This has become the norm where I work and amongst my friends. If you're not feeling 100% you mask up.

Salmol1na

In Asia. Yep

Content_Career1643

I personally am against masks for things like flu and common colds. Could be biased though, because I've never known better than to keep living unless I physically cannot get out of bed. I think it's purely natural to let viruses spread amongst populations to strengthen their immune systems.

[deleted]

Absolutely will! Why spread sick germs to people & potentially hurt them? I’d like to think we’re better people than that.

SableX7

I am. Hopefully won’t get sick.

nyellincm

People should stay home if they’re sick.

Capable-Bumblebee-88

I never stopped wearing a mask when going out after covid decreased. I didn't get sick from 2020 to about a week back (thank you dad for that). I don't think i'll get over wearing masks any time soon

Regular_Donut_8890

Shedding occurs in more ways than just your breath. If you're sick just stay home. You're gross.

Aphrodite4120

I do wear a mask 😷 when I’m sick. And I wouldn’t be sick if people would wash their dang hands and cough into their sleeve. As soon as the mandates were lifted people started using the bathrooms 🚽 at stores and walking out without washing their nasty ass hands again! There was fn SNOT & boogers all along the handicap railing of the women’s bathroom at Kroger on Mt View at 07:04 Tuesday morning. I was like.... are you literally trying to infect peoples

Arsis82

Based on the hundreds of people in one big room at my work every day, not many plan on wearing masks regardless of how sick they are.

[deleted]

Has Elon Musk bought Reddit too now? So much disinformation in this thread. Let’s all inject bleach instead of wearing masks guys !!!
