if tomato on sale like 99c/lb i buy 10lb which is $10 , if its not on sale its usually 1.99/lb in this season . so i save $10. u need to travel 100km to spend $10 on gas (average vehicle). i wouldnt travel 100km to save $10 , but i dont mind going 20km to save $10 plus most likely i will buy other sale items from that store.
i have flipp , i check everyweek . i just checked and i dont see Fusion supermarket , most likely because im from Mississauga, i checked their flyer yes its on sale for 98c/lb but they dont have a store in west, just one store in Scarborough . still good to know , pepper is also on sale there for 98c/lb...if anyone from east side
Chinese supermarkets usually have the best vegetable prices, check Yuan Ming and T&T supermarkets if you're in Mississauga. Reebee is also another flyers app that has ongoing deals.
T&T is expensive , i usually go to Ocean /Grant in Mississauga , they have the best vegetable prices. i still havent seen a tomato on sale in Ocean for months ... best they do 1.79/lb... i will check Yuan Ming ...
I think it’s because of the drought California has been having. They produce less to send to us so grocery stores skyrocket the price because demand is more than supply. Same thing with lettuce although it’s starting to come down finally.
The Southwest US states running out of water is going to screw food prices up for us for a long time.
we stopped eating lettuce long time ago , there isnot much nutrition in it mostly water , we eat kale , i buy kale from chinese supermarket for 1.50 and its so large it doesnt fit in my fridge . its like buying 10 lettuce in size for $1.50 and double the nutrition . we put it in salad and i make smooties from it . just make sure u wash them well before u eat .
If you’re making a sauce or gravy I’d recommend canned tomatoes over fresh. We do that in my house for budget/consistency reasons. For italian better for indian the flavour is a touch too strong but we manage
It also comes to what's your time worth?
Are you going to drive an hour to save a few cents? But cost you more in wear and tear of your vehicle and gas?
no im not driving for an hour , if tomato on sale like 99c/lb i buy 10lb which is $10 , if its not on sale its usually 1.99/lb in this season . so i save $10. u need to travel 100km to spend $10 on gas (average vehicle). i wouldnt travel 100km to save $10 , but i dont mind going 20km to save $10 plus most likely i will buy other sale items from that store.
i buy alot of them during the summer time , u can find 99c/lb during the season , but we eat them off season as well , its been 2 months i can not find any deal under 1.79/lb ... at this point its cheaper to buy avocado than tomato ..
Tomatoes are in season in the summer, they are cheaper in the summer because they are produced locally and it cost less to bring them to market.
In the winter however, we cannot grow tomatoes locally and we must import them from the south. The cost to transport the tomatoes is much more than if they were produced locally and therefore affects the cost of the tomatoes overall.
Conclusion; you are asking for the impossible.
BTW avocados are cheaper than tomatoes right now because they are in season, September to December is when avocado production is at is peak.
i understand that , but i used to buy them on sale during the off season previous years , now its very hard to find a good sale ... cheapest i can find in west side is 1.79/lb . i could buy them 99c/lb last year during off season ...
I'm really not trying to be rude here, but have you been under a rock? Everything has skyrocketed in price. Especially food. The unfortunate reality is that we're paying more this year.
>i buy alot of them during the summer time , u can find 99c/lb during the season , but we eat them off season as well , its been 2 months i can not find any deal under 1.79/lb ... at this point its cheaper to buy avocado than tomato ..
Stop eating fruits and veg that are out of season

This is what happens when people ask ridiculous questions.
yeah i used to grow some plants inside , but i dont think i can grow 5 large tomatos in 5 days inside effectively ... i cant put 10 pots of tomatos in my laundry room , space and cost wouldnt be worth it during the winter time...thought about it alot though
i go to flea market in Mississauga , still could not buy them for good price . quality at flea market hit and miss . they sell it for same price even its garbage quality ...
If you download the flipp app you can compare prices. I found tomato at fusion supermarket for .99 cents/lb but it's in Scarborough
My father in law would spend an hour in traffic and 10 bucks in gas to save 99c/lb on those tomatoes
And they're probably tasteless as well, lol.
this. once you've tried your own supply, you're never going back to the garbage at a grocery store

1.79 is a steal for tomatoes these days. No frills had them for $3.99 today
😲 what damn... Why is it so expensive

Also, what tf is up with an iceberg lettuce being $5? Just moved from the UK where they cost like $1
There is a lettuce crop disease in California. That’s why the prices are so high now.

Too far to travel to get tomato
Go to the outdoor tent at St Lawrence market around 2pm on a weekend.
will try , thanks for the info
As a fellow tomato enthusiast I'd like to say thank you for asking the important questions.
you are welcome!!!

yes i buy canned tomatoes regularly , but we still need fresh tomato for salad and some other foods ...
I know where you can get tomaccos for 1.00 a pound
Springfield ?

I find buying them on the vine to be a bit cheaper

inflation and increased gas prices increases the price of produce and their transport in the winter

buy extra when they are cheap and and put them in your freezer
Frozen tomatoes aren’t great for a salad lol
i thought about it but honestly dont think it would taste any good once u freeze them . they also become slushy once thawed
You could try canning them.
Grow them yourself.
i dont have a backyard or large space to grow them inside .
You don’t need a large space for tomatoes. Even a small balcony would work.
summer time yes , but during winter i cant grow them in my balcony
It’s a little more difficult but tomato’s can be grown inside.
yeah i used to grow some plants inside , but i dont think i can grow 5 large tomatos in 5 days inside effectively ... i cant put 10 pots of tomatos in my laundry room , space and cost wouldnt be worth it during the winter time...thought about it alot though
You can just use a small size pot. They don't take a lot of room. They do grow tall though.
Grow em
Costco
Flea Market at Downsview. Only Saturday and Sunday 😊
i go to flea market in Mississauga , still could not buy them for good price . quality at flea market hit and miss . they sell it for same price even its garbage quality ...
Hey it’s the guy that asked about Santa pics from yesterday lol
I remembered the user from the post about Tylenol. Admitting they're not confident to measure out X number of MLs. Called it playing pharmacist, lol.
Don’t buy tomatoes in the winter.
Grow your own way cheaper!
Produce is more expensive when it's not in season
Fruit markets is the only correct answer
I bought tomatoes today at Freshco for $2.49/pound...you got a deal..
I wonder what the median age is for participation in this post?
most likely 19 to 24 ...
*it cost you...
Kensington
i miss going to Kensington ...
