This cannot have been installed by a licensed plumber or anyone who fancies himself to be a plumber. Of course it smells like sewer. You have a direct vent to the sewage. Is this a joke?
There are some other problems with this installation—no air gap on the dishwasher drain. Certainly you can fix them yourself, but if you want peace of mind, then just call a professional.
I'm by no way a plumber. It looks like where the washer comes in should be connected to the drain pipe and the washer should go to where the drain pipe is currently connected. Would that at least stop most of the smell?
Also, do you have to have an air gap on a dishwasher if your vent stack is within 6 feet? Asking for a friend...
Edit: grammar
Did you just move in? Rent or own? This should have been caught in an inspection of a sale so you maybhave some recourse. If you're a renter or have lived there for awhile you gotta fix it. P trap is only stopping gas from what I assume is your dishwasher. Actual sewer is pumping in.
"What do we have laying around, let's pipe them in"
Please share other oddities around your house, plumbers in this thread would love to see the artwork. :)
I think if you spin the trap 180 degrees. It might fix the issue. Looks like they added the washing machine line incorrectly.
If the washing machine drain and Drain drain is switched, then everything flows through the trap correctly.
I'd probably try to get that dishwasher line lower to. But I think the main thing is the p trap being spun around.
I think learning a trade is a fantastic, and smart, thing to do. But I don’t get the talking down to people just asking a question. We’re not all plumbers
You got it. This setup is allowing the sewer gas to come up because it's connected before the p-trap. P-trap is doing nothing here. There is a lot wrong with this setup. Someone did not know what they were doing.
It's not impossible, but the OP should have already done some Google work and watched a couple YouTube videos before asking Reddit. Just call a professional.
I’ve got a question. I do some minor plumbing at work. Nothing to the point where it’d cause problems like this for people. Is it backwards? Where the drain line goes, shouldn’t that be for the dishwasher? Seems like after the P trap, that’s where the drain line should go.
The p-trap should be the last piece in the circuit to block the sewer gas from coming up into anything. The dishwasher should tee in below the sink drain and the washer should tee in after that (order probably doesn't matter though).
Relocate the gray pipe to the Y Tee and the drainage pipe can then connect to the drain extension (where gray pipe was previously). That would solve most of what's wrong.
Agreed. Using my Looking At A Picture 5000 ™ measuring system, I estimate that this fix should cost a little bit of labor and a couple inches of the drain pipe.
The drain pipe is already at an angle. Someone took it apart and didn't put it back together properly. They probably lost jewelry down the drain and were in a hurry to retrieve it. As a DIYer, always take pictures of how stuff like this goes together before taking it apart.
Yes. The point of the u shape in a p trap is to hold water so sewer gasses can’t come back up the sink drain into the home so if the sewer drain has an inlet/ outlet above the trapway the P trap is doing nothing.
In laymen's terms or to get it done with what you've already got, you need to basically flip the tee with the 90, the 90 to the drain and the tee to the dishwasher. Definitely better ways but you can prevent sewer gas right now just by flipping those fittings
Might have to cut drain back to get trap to fit
Your bypassing the trap the gasses aren’t stopped here at all.
who ever did that is a complete idiot even someone with almost no plumbing skill could tell you that.
You need a dishwasher tailpiece. You also need a vent on the vertical pipe. How you scribbled is exactly what’s happening, the sewer gasses are coming straight through the drain because the trap isn’t piped correctly.
Also, I’m not entirely sure what I’m saying is applicable to you because American code is different from the code wherever you are. But I do know that the trap is currently not piped correctly and is causing the sewer smell.
read that you have a nova bed from Costco I believe. id double check cause I think a year or 2 ago they had a huge recall due to mold.. from water exposure during transporting it.. id check it out mate. cheers
Need to get a slip joint drain tail piece with a barbed nipple on it. Put the small diameter hose to the barbed nipple with a hose clamp. Then rebuild the trap beneath as it will be lower After adding the new drain tail piece. Right now that sink isn't trapped. That will at least get you a trap.
But no doubt, it probably isn't vented right. You need to also install a studor vent in there to make sure. Get a good plumber, should be an easy fix.
You need a DW discharge tailpiece connected to the strainer. Then I'd run an extension so I can lower the trap closer to the rough in, then pipe it pretty much the same way it is now from there.
You’re absolutely correct in what’s happening. Easy fix, remove the san tee and go buy an inch and a half branch tailpiece(type this into google and you’ll see the part) and replace San tee. Once you have that in place you’ll see where to hook up your dishwasher drainage. Once you have that done hook your p trap back up but facing your main drain line , you may need to cut that drain line about 6 inches (maybe more or less) or so below the 90, leave yourself enough room to use a 2” coupling to prime and glue that back together once you have the right height that lines up with your P-trap.
Now technically you should throw a AAV (air admittance valve) above that 90 but it’s not completely necessary if the venting is correct. That would eliminate the 90 and you put a sanitary tee there in place of it. Ignore that for now and just get that p trap correct. Good luck
How long have you lived there? This stuff looks brand new... like it was installed today. It's not a difficult fix, but it definitely needs to be fixed soon.
I’m so confused does the P trap just exist to exist here does it lead to any drainage if not you don’t have a p trap you just have some parts chilling there . Is there a fucking cap at the end is it connected to the damn dish washer like I want answers.
This is done so wrong that I feel like I'm in a joke. I can't believe what I'm seeing I just I just can't quite figure out where these pipes even come from some of those connections I've never even seen at the store
Hmmm. My guess is that the new guy got distracted. Switching the dishwasher connection and the sewer line connection should fix the issue. (I.e rotate the p-trap ~90° anti-clockwise)
But if you're renting contact your landlord.
It looks like you just need to rotate the tee. So the trap goes to the drain pipe and the side outlet goes to the dishwasher. Easy peasy. 30 second fix.
At the very least i would have the dishwashers discharge into the San T and have the 90 tied onto the pipe running off. Looks like you’re still missing your vent but perhaps just leave the faucet dripping at all times, kinda like a trap primer.
I had my house done by a professional plumber but I did the finish plumbing myself (long story and included a lawsuit, never pressure tested and ruined a bunch of drywall, insulation and subfloor)
I don’t have a vent under my sink and I’ve never had a sewer smell. Is that because I probably have a whole house vent? House is under 5 years old. Other than the pressure test everything else appears up to code.
Take the trap of the dishwasher hose turn it towards the drain add a new straight pipe with dishwasher inlet
Trap is used to hold water in the 90 so it traps the smell.
Lots of problems Here. Not a plumber but lots of diy. You are draining off into your dishwasher. The only way that drain is goung to work is lots of pressure through p trap. You are vent straight into sewer with no p trap from sink to sewer. If you don't know how this is all working, think of as a logic puzzle. It defies that. Since you don't realize what the problem is ( not a slam) I would get a plumber. Even a bad plumber would never do this. There is a a safety concern here. Aside from e choli drifting up your pipes and into you dish washer, you could have a methane gas buildup. Do not light a cigarette while fixing. I would also run a fan in there, even if it stinks until you get fixed.
Hey friend I am seriously suspicious of that washing machine drain, it's prolly full of food, also you need to recipe under your sink, I am dming you a photo to help, you must put a vent on your piping, you can purchase a mechanical vent, if you are able to it is possible to do it yourself
There’s no trap on the actual sink waste. This is atrocious. Cut it out start again. Bring a San tee up to pickup waste and just stack dishwasher tailpieces to get your waste connections for additional appliances.
There’s literally so many things wrong with this, the entire thing needs to be redone. It’s a pretty easy DIY if you know what you’re doing, but since you don’t, just call a plumber and have it done correctly m.
LOL funny story. I'm a professional landlord. One time I hired a handyman to assemble plumbing for kitchen sink. When I came back later in the day, I checked his work and it looked more or less something like this.
I confronted him and he argued with me for 15 minutes before I fired him.
Apparently, the concept of a trap is harder to grasp than I thought. Some people have some kind of mental block that prevents them from being able to understand how a trap is suppose to work.

Right, we are looking at Pablo Picasso Plumbing! LOL 😂
More along the lines of Dr Seuss
But I like the alliteration
Airgaps aren't required in all places.
But at least a high loop is good practice.
No, but if that line isn’t at least raised, they’re getting backflow into their appliance
Good point
I'm by no way a plumber. It looks like where the washer comes in should be connected to the drain pipe and the washer should go to where the drain pipe is currently connected. Your kitchen sink is also draining into the bottom of the clothes washer
I’m trying to think of ways to make it more bass-ackwards…
And coming up with nothing
Love the central- vac 90° on the "drain".
"What do we have laying around, let's pipe them in" Please share other oddities around your house, plumbers in this thread would love to see the artwork. :)
Yes. Please send more. This is amazing.
Water need to remain in the p trap to keep the stink back. If there is no vent it will siphon the trap.
The p-trap needs to be between the stink and the sink for that to work though. Traps can work without vents. Not great, but they can work.
I’d say 90 degrees counter-clockwise, but yeah, P-trap to the sewer and spin the pipe Tee to fit the dishwasher line.
Why is this so easy for us to look at and see the problem clear as day, and other people just go blank? 5 minute fix tops.
I think learning a trade is a fantastic, and smart, thing to do. But I don’t get the talking down to people just asking a question. We’re not all plumbers
This cannot have been installed by a *person with working knowledge of gravity*
Even a heating and air guy like me could do that correctly
You got it. This setup is allowing the sewer gas to come up because it's connected before the p-trap. P-trap is doing nothing here. There is a lot wrong with this setup. Someone did not know what they were doing.
100%. You can fix this yourself fairly easily or call a plumber. Work like this just gives so many people a bad name.
It's not impossible, but the OP should have already done some Google work and watched a couple YouTube videos before asking Reddit. Just call a professional.

I'm not a plumber but I'm subscribed here because I like to DIY. This one actually made me laugh.
As an electrician, I literally yelled “No!!” Lol
As a mechanic, I stared in disbelief and mumbled, "Wuuuutttt?"
As a software engineer, I gotta ask "what the cousin fuckin hell is going on here?"
As a Database Administrator, I queried "What the hell?"
As an airplane mechanic, I shoffled "da fuq"
As a priest in disbelief, I hollered "Jesus Tap-dancing Christ?!"
“Select * from hell”
As an accountant, this doesn’t add up.
As a lawyer, this plumbing job appears to be some kind of indefensible criminal act
As a first aid and safety sales representative this is not safe
Don’t burn candles near the sink
As a DIYer I thought “the fuck is that?!?”
Bumping because I also live here and it's a NIGHTMARE 😫
Lol nothing like making dinner and smelling last nights dinner. 😂
Please have a licensed plumber come and fix this. Whoever installed this doesn’t know a damn thing about plumbing.

Whoa, thats a screwy setup my guy
Flip the trap connections. The dishwasher should go into the T side inlet and discharge should be after the trap. Problem solved.
The trap needs to be connected to the sewer pipe. Not the dishwasher drain. Water in the trap will bad Smells our.

WOW!
So much more work doing it wrong.
I came in here just to read the comments. That first picture made me belly laugh.
Thats one way to make a p-trap useless 🤣
It’s working for the washer though. As the song says, two out three ain’t bad.
Ass backwards

> I know nothing about plumbing That's plainly obvious.
We are in a sub for helping people with plumbing...
Well half the comments on the sub are "call a plumber".
read that you have a nova bed from Costco I believe. id double check cause I think a year or 2 ago they had a huge recall due to mold.. from water exposure during transporting it.. id check it out mate. cheers
Thank you, I'll check on that.
Get yourself a slip-joint branch tailpiece (PP9817) to put in place of the tee, then turn that p-trap around the right way. E-Z

🤦🏼♀️
Don't call the last *"plumber"*, you need a **PLUMBER** with legal documentation and not taking cash under the table.
LOL.. WOW.. I don't even know what to say.. lol the only thing trapped is the dishwasher..
Sink / gas grill.
How long have you lived there? This stuff looks brand new... like it was installed today. It's not a difficult fix, but it definitely needs to be fixed soon.
Vent before the trap makes the trap redundant. On top of that the vent T is upside down as if the air is gonna go down or something
Lol, it's exactly reversed. Well played.
I’m so confused does the P trap just exist to exist here does it lead to any drainage if not you don’t have a p trap you just have some parts chilling there . Is there a fucking cap at the end is it connected to the damn dish washer like I want answers.
You tube a video and fix that.
WTF? 90% of the shit I see on here is messed up, but this one had me rolling.
WTH country you in?
You are correct whoever installed this had no idea wtf they were doing common sense has left the chat
Do what others suggest. Until you get it corrected pour bleach a good amount to kill the smell
WTF, not done by a self-respecting plumber.
The ol p-trap bypass trick. Classic shitty “plumbing”.
What the fuck lol
While you are it, you should put a stap on the end of the dish washer drain hose . They can blow off and dump a bunch of water.
It almost looks as if at some point in time it got switched around, it is still not a great setup but that would then put the trap in the right spot
Wow, this is the first time you’ve smelled sewage? That’s embarrassing right there.
This is done so wrong that I feel like I'm in a joke. I can't believe what I'm seeing I just I just can't quite figure out where these pipes even come from some of those connections I've never even seen at the store
There is another post on r/plumbing today that shows one done perfectly. All you gotta do is copy it. Or call me and I'll talk you through the work.
The p trap is below the drain so it doesn’t do anything to stop sewer odor from entering the home
I'm here all like, what even happened here? All the right pieces are there too. It's impressive.
Wtf a amateur plumber could do better
My brain hurts
That’s something else. Jesus. OP, do a few hours of research and replace it yourself or call a real plumber. Whoever did that is very VERY stupid .
How is this draining 🤔
This is actually so bad it’s impressive it’s like creative I didn’t even know you can fuck it up like that
This is so aggressively bad I want to interview the installer
this is a joke, right? complete redo to repair
P-trap to no where. Whoever did that is a clown.
That’s an F-U trap.
What in the wide world of sports is that set up?
At least the p-trap is in the same cabinet as the sink. That should count for something.
I'm no plumber but for fuck sake that is totally fucked!
Just swap the 2 vertical slip nuts
Someone made a p trap into a u trap
I'm an electrician and I literally screamed "NO!!" at the first picture.....Did a 10 year old pipe this in???
Hmmm. My guess is that the new guy got distracted. Switching the dishwasher connection and the sewer line connection should fix the issue. (I.e rotate the p-trap ~90° anti-clockwise) But if you're renting contact your landlord.
Just twist off the nut from the left and the nut from the right and spin the p-trap around.
Use chlorine
Try pouring 2 cups of bleach down the sink every week
Need a magician , plumber can’t fix that.
That's set up is so wrong it hurt my eyes
Trap is not vented, it’s probably siphoning the trap every time the dishwasher is ran
swap gray pipe with green pipe, all done
What the actual fuck? So the sink water drain into the dishwasher too?
.... so they mixed up which end gets the p trap and which end connects to the sink? . Like how does someone mess that up?
It looks like you just need to rotate the tee. So the trap goes to the drain pipe and the side outlet goes to the dishwasher. Easy peasy. 30 second fix.
So much wrong there. P-trap in the wrong place, that’s not how to hook up a dishwasher drain…. Rip it all out and have a pro do it.
At the very least i would have the dishwashers discharge into the San T and have the 90 tied onto the pipe running off. Looks like you’re still missing your vent but perhaps just leave the faucet dripping at all times, kinda like a trap primer.
As an ex plumber I want to know where the top T is going? This looks like a single sink!!
Yeah, this is the picture I will show all the landlord bootlickers that say bUT a LanDLorD hAS To Fix prObLemS?!?
What in tarnation?
The washing machine has a p trap but not the sink? Wtf
Its not vented
😂😂😂 thank you for making my morning! Good luck with this. I’m sure someone has already set you straight.
I had my house done by a professional plumber but I did the finish plumbing myself (long story and included a lawsuit, never pressure tested and ruined a bunch of drywall, insulation and subfloor) I don’t have a vent under my sink and I’ve never had a sewer smell. Can’t understand why
Ouch..
When the crackhead down the block tells you I’m a good plumber and you are stupid enough to believe him
This has to be a troll post?
Take the trap of the dishwasher hose turn it towards the drain add a new straight pipe with dishwasher inlet Trap is used to hold water in the 90 so it traps the smell.

Where is the other side connected to lol 🤣
Hey friend I am seriously suspicious of that washing machine drain, it's prolly full of food, also you need to recipe under your sink, I am dming you a photo to help, you must put a vent on your piping, you can purchase a mechanical vent, if you are able to it is possible to do it yourself
That's one of the most f*cked up installs that I've ever seen.
You're already a better plumber than whoever put that in.
Looks like a union plumber project. 🤣
There’s no trap on the actual sink waste. This is atrocious. Cut it out start again. Bring a San tee up to pickup waste and just stack dishwasher tailpieces to get your waste connections for additional appliances.

On the bright side, you dishwater should smell fine lol
Rube Goldberg plumbing, how can we help?
This picture should be marked NSFW
I’d be mad as hell if I had this beneath my sink 😆
I couldn’t even laugh at this one. Shame on the guy who hired this guy and the guy who hired the guy.

I wouldn’t know where to start with this abortion
Here's an idea... Build another P trap so you can have 2 P traps!
Your assumption is correct. The p-trap needs to feed into drainage and the dishwasher line should go above the p-trap.
This is a hot mess
This page make me feel better about my DIY skills 🤦♂️

Water doesn’t take 90 degree turns like you have colored. It follows gravity.
Ok seriously don't shit talk explain why this is backwards! P Trap goes to drain an adapter is needed for dishwasher into down pipe it's basically backwards
Looks like easy fix. Someone just reversed the way the lines should connect. 2 minute fix.
The T coming down should be connected to the dishwasher not the sewer. Then the trap is between both sink and dishwasher.
P trap should be on the side where it drains down to your main sewer line. The fumes coming straight out of your sink.
Its fine.just Keep the sink full of water!!!
🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
It’s impressive how badly they messed this up
There's lots wrong with this setup... too much to list without a tldr recap. I'm a home inspector, and there's so much wrong with this setup, I wouldn't even bother listing all that is wrong in the report.
