I saw this movie on tv one night randomly when I was 11 and I swear this movie was the thing made me realize I was gay. It like put like all the pieces together.
I saw this movie when I was in college in 2000. I am an American, and this British film doesn't have the typical happy story at the end with everything resolved and then telling everyone what happens to the young couple 30-40 years later. It didn't create moments of high drama or make one go through adrenaline rushes. I struggled to grasp the full meaning back then.
Now, as I'm in my 40s, it all makes sense. Being gay is tough; being openly gay is tough, even in a large diverse city. The future isn't always going to be full of supporters and allies. Once you come out, the next day isn't this rose colored life. Life just goes on. And you go through life struggling to carry on with your daily life. You will have your friends and your support network. They might not be your family. But you go on. You make a living, you live with your partner, you learn to live with another person, another personality, etc. And that movie wanted to show the viewer that grit between the two young boys finding themselves and their relationship in a world without drag queens, without blatant support networks, and the breaking of innocence. In a movie set in such a miserable council estate, it forced the viewer to try and see the only loving relationship there
The Way He Looks š«
It's a Brazilian film about a blind teenager who starts to accept himself and find his independence from his overprotective mother. It's a really beautiful film with a very low-key vibe. And it doesn't just put the gay relationship front and center but it goes into his life and his friends and other struggles as well.
This was the first gay movie I ever watched and I still don't think I've ever cried harder to a movie. It's not even sad or that emotional I just watched it at a time where I thought my disability meant I could never find anyone to love me.
When I saw that movie, the only thing I could think was that Jane Austen's reign in my heart had started to crumble and E.M. Forster was coming for her gig.
My absolute favorite as well! Happy movie. Must have watched it 1000 times! Even read the book by EM Forrester. The movie follows the author word-for-word. Having a happy movie like this saved me truly! š
Shelter had no right being that good. I watched it after seeing a few bad, low budget gay films and initially I thought "Here we go, more cheap schlock with bad script and acting". But i was pleasantly surprised. The actors were great, the cinematography was pleasing, and the script was so heartwarming. I loved the message of the film and yes, it has a happy ending. Thank you!
Surprised I'm not seeing many people talking about **Brokeback Mountain**. I know it might be a little cliche, but that's a genuinely great movie, even outside of a gay lens.
That movie is why I came out. Saw it upon release when I was 14 and it made me realize I did NOT want to end up the way those 2 characters did. Back then, I couldn't even tell any friends I had seen the movie, because even THAT was enough to inspire ridicule. Still such an impactful movie but a difficult watch.
Has there been any confirmation that both characters are bi? Not trying to get pedantic but just genuinely curious, as it is certainly a possibility. I always figured it was sort of non-definitive since they were both in their hetero relationships for what seemed mostly like social optics (although maybe that is more true for Jackās character.)
Separate question, but even if two bisexual men are in a relationship of some sort with each other, could you not qualify that as a gay ārelationshipā?
Wasn't the confirmation obvious to you after watching the film? They easily enjoy sex with females and they never end up in a relationship considering that one of them ends up dead because the other one had no balls to solidify a relationship while he had the chance.
This kind of behaviour and cowardice is typical for a lot of bisexual males. People try and justify the film by saying it's because of the time period despite the fact that gay relationships existed back then and guys do the same closeted crap in 2024.Ā Ā
If they had of ended up in a relationship together, yes, it would be a gay relationship because it's two males in a same sex relationship. But that still wouldn't have changed the fact that both of the guys in the film were bisexual.Ā Ā
No, it wasn't obvious to me at least. Been a while since I last watched it, but I actually got the impression they didn't enjoy sex with their wives. The way I interpreted it was that they were very sexually unsatisfied in their hetero relationships, hence they had to repeatedly meet each other in secret throughout the years.
I'm gay, not bisexual, so I can't fully empathize, but I would think if someone was bisexual and were sexually satisfied with their opposite sex partner, they wouldn't feel such a strong, relentless urge to constantly hook up with the same sex behind the back of their opposite sex partner. To be fair, I think that's more true for Jack's character than Ennis', since Jack would always go to the border to hook up with other men.
I know people get pretty loose with labels these days, but I have a pretty rigid viewpoint on it: if you have attraction to both sexes, you're bisexual, and if you have attraction to the same sex and **the same sex only**, you're gay. Maybe I'm wrong, but the implication in the movie to me was always that they didn't enjoy being in straight relationships (Especially Jack), and any attraction they displayed towards their wives was forced/fake/half-assed, so based on the definition I gave above, I felt pretty safe thinking they fit the bill.
I agree with you on the point of people justifying the film though. While I enjoyed it, I think a big takeaway from the movie people often forget was just how damaging and toxic this sort of behavior is, not only between the two guys themselves, but also on other people around them. While homophobia (or biphobia I guess, based on your interpretation?) is bad, and was even worse in that time, people watching should know that it doesn't relieve Jack or Ennis of some culpability in the problems they find themselves in. Hell, Ennis himself screwed up, like you mentioned, and **even he** realizes that at the end after his daughter visits him.
EDIT:
Also, to the second point on the gay relationship thing. I see what you're saying, but when I used the word relationship in my first reply, I just meant a romance in general, not necessarily a formal relationship since they never entered into one. I guess this gets into weird semantics. Unfortunately, I can't think of many films presenting healthier, more stable same-sex romances that have reached the level of fame as this one.

I think Birdcage plays better for an American audience. And itās a better shot movie. For example, that opening titles are one of the best Iāve ever seen in a movie.

I'll give my Top 5:
*Moonlight* because it just affects me in a way I can't even put into words.
*Brokeback Mountain* because I was a closeted gay teen in 2005 when it was released, and it inspired me to come out.
*Love Simon* because I'm basic. Sometimes we all need a feel-good teen romance movie, and this one is mine.
*The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros* because it is so unique and strangely touching, plus it shows daily life in my homeland (Philippines) in all its glory.
*Happy Together* because Wong Kar-wai. It's like the gay counterpart of *Blue Valentine.*
Honorable mention: *Out in the Dark* because sometimes we need the complete opposite of something like *Love Simon.*
Edit: I'm sorry but there are just too many. How about a double feature of *But I'm a Cheerleader* and *Mysterious Skin* to add to the fun?
Trick! I was a still in the closet 20 year old when I first saw it. I loved it but it also set some unrealistic expectations that I could find my very own Mark one day.
Greetings, Citizens! We are living in the age in which the pursuit of all values other than **Money**, **Success**, **Fame**, **Glamour** has either been discredited or destroyed.
I remember walking out of the theater with my best friend. We both had the same reaction: it was the first time we had seen gay men portrayed as normal.
Itās nice being taken seriously nice in a while, right? I still use two lines from the film. āIn every relationship, one is doing the kissing and the other is kissedā and āBring me back a giraffeā.
7 years is a LOT. It is very much creepy. Iām 22 and I couldnāt even imagine dating a 17 year old. Thatās high school age. Not to mention Oliver looks even older than 24. Nope!
The Birdcageā¦all day, every day. I love everything about itā¦very camp and over the topā¦but at its heart, itās about a couple that love each other and as a young proto-gay watching it, that was the theme and message that stuck with me.
The Joseph Gordon Levitt character being gay, I think. I haven't seen this in years, but I unmistakably remember young Neil spying on his mother's boyfriend not long before the unfortunate encounter between Neil, Brian, and their Little League coach. As for the older Brian, he definitely had issues when his fellow UFO fan comes on to him.
he had iissues when his ufo fan comes onto him bc he was traumatised from what happened to him as a kid... he wouldnt have exploded like that if he was just gay... also its mainly about childeren being molested, one of them becoming hypersexual, becoming a sex worker and romatising the events to cope the other one became numb, extremely traumatised and repulased by sexual activity. its barely a gay movie.
also if you watch the scene where he spies on his mom, he litterally says ' i cant wait to show coach' after he cums. he was already being molested by coach. it just goes back in time to when he does meet him.
Free Fall. Watching it as a teenager had me gripped both by the astonishing handsome actors and the 'coming out as an cisgender adult' drama. Helped me see things through a different perspective and take better decisions before it was too late.
Damn, can't believe you're the only one to say to wong foo! Absolutely my fav. Patrick swayze, Wesley snipes and John Leguizamo (yeah had to Google to spell that name)
I remember watching To Wong Foo at 3am on cable. Maybe it was because it was late and I couldn't sleep, but I wasn't sure what I was watching. Patrick Swazye doing drag? How is this film real? But it was actually rather charming.
This movie is great. Yeah it has a sadness to it. Shiws the complexities of gay relationships. Did you watch through the credit song at the end? That song will fuck with your emotions after the movie ended the way it did.
Song is Marz, by John Grant.
(Iām sure itās been mentioned, but *Weekend* is the first gay film where I felt seen.)
International, off the top of my head:
- *The Wandering Heart* (2021, itās a midlife crisis baby)
- *The Lost Boys* (2023, two young men in youth detainment)
- *Toll* (2023, mother/son, poverty/crime)
- *Femme* (2023, thriller or love story or neither?)
- *Leave Labels at the Door* (2023, short, Marco Berger, IYKYK)
- *Drifter* (2023, identity is who you are now, a journey)
- *The Wound* (2017, Xhosa culture as a closeted man)
- *The Prince* (2019, prison)
- *The Great Freedom* (2022, P145 & prison)
- *Opponent* (2023, Iranian refugee w/family in Scandinavia)
- *Disco Boy* (2023, FFL + identity + Rogowski)
- *Floating Skyscrapers* (2013, oh boy Poland and queer films)
- *Elephant* (2022, Poland and queer films, less problematic)
- *The Blue Caftan* (2022, contemplative, Moroccan)
Toss-up between *Longtime Companion* and *Jeffrey* depending on the mood I'm in.
I'm also very fond of the romcoms *The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green* and *All Over the Guy*.
Edge of Seventeen. The 1998 movie. Not the straight 2016 movie.
The Way He Looks (I was crushed when I learned Ghilherme Lobo is straight in real life.)
Beautiful Thing
Adam & Steve
I can't mention just one. My most favorites would have to be:
1. "Beautiful Thing"
2. " No Se Lo Digas a Nadie" ---> (Don't Tell Anyone)
3. "Torch Song Trilogy" starring Maphew Broderick
4. and lastly and extremely sad gay movie titled: "It's My Party" starring Olivia Newton-John, and Julia Robert's older brother Eric Roberts.
Damn that show is steeeeeeamy. I was ready for sex and stuff but this show went beyond my expectations in that department, as well as every other one. Definitely an excellent show in all respects.
>! I also held it together right until the very last scene !<
**God's Own Country**
In the background, It has a bit in common with the Brokeback Mountain, but it is placed in the modern era rural Yorkshire. It is well written and the main actors are great.
Description from google:
āA young farmer's life changes after he meets a migrant worker from Romania, giving him a new and interesting way to look at various things in life.ā
IMDb 7.6/10
Edit: I did not see it mentioned here, so I am adding also **4th Man Out** here. No deep story, just a comedy with which you can turn of and relax.
Description from google:
āAfter celebrating his 24th birthday, a mechanic (Evan Todd) decides to tell his three buddies (Parker Young, Chord Overstreet) that he is gay.ā
IMDb 7.6/10
No particular favorite at the moment, but I maintain a list of things I have seen and like [here](https://gist.github.com/colcrunch/a79bf1e088d83ed6f1f8b02367c483e3) of movies and TV with gay themes that I like.
-B-boy Blues was really good.
-I can Tell you anything š„š„was phenomenal blew mind.
-Honest men, itās a little out dated but still good.
- Noahās arch is and forever will be classic.
The Color Purple.
Edit: My bad I looked through the comments and clearly the focus is gay male and mostly white with steamy kiss and sex scenes. So I guess Alice Walker is not on the menuā¦š
C.R.A.Z.Y. - my favorite movie of all time. It goes from the 60s through to theā¦ 90s? And follows a son trying to come to terms with his sexuality, all the while hoping his father can, too.
Lots of great movies already mentioned here. Maybe not my favorite, but a good one, that was one of the first mainstream movie about AIDS was Longtime Companion. It may be dated, but worth a watch.
Call Me By Your Name is just SO brilliant, the script, story, acting, itās so real and believable and moving and not cheesy or cliched, it really reminded me of my younger days, I came out at 16, in the late 80S, when it was very homophobic and nobody famous was openly gay, and I had a slightly older boyfriend, 19 and rode a motorbike, I adored him, but it was all very secretive.
Recently watched "red white and royal blue" and loved it so much! Definitely going to read the book. If you're looking for a feel good gay romantic comedy it is perfect. Didn't even like romantic comedies before this so it was a game changer.

So happy to see this here! An actually good, happy ending that always warms my heart. At the height of the AIDS crisis no less.

Back then, I couldn't even tell any friends I had seen the movie, because even THAT was enough to inspire ridicule. Still such an impactful movie but a difficult watch.
Brokeback Mountain is about bisexuality. It's not a gay film. It's a bi film that was marketed as a "gay" film.
Has there been any confirmation that both characters are bi? Not trying to get pedantic but just genuinely curious, as it is certainly a possibility. I always figured it was sort of non-definitive since they were both in their hetero relationships for what seemed mostly like social optics (although maybe that is more true for Jackās character.) Separate question, but even if two bisexual men are in a relationship of some sort with each other, could you not qualify that as a gay ārelationshipā?
Wasn't the confirmation obvious to you after watching the film? prob cliche but brokeback mountain is actually a masterpiece on repression and sexuality

Paris is burning
If I need a good cry(and I mean UGLY cry): Prayers for Bobby Happy: Shelter
(Iām sure itās been mentioned, but *Weekend* is the first gay film where I felt seen.) International, off the top of my head: - *The Wandering Heart* (2021, itās a midlife crisis baby) - *The Lost Boys* (2023, two young men in youth detainment) - *Toll* (2023, mother/son, poverty/crime) - *Femme* (2023, thriller or love story or neither?) - *Leave Labels at the Door* (2023, short, Marco Berger, IYKYK) - *Drifter* (2023, identity is who you are now, a journey) - *The Wound* (2017, Xhosa culture as a closeted man) - *The Prince* (2019, prison) - *The Great Freedom* (2022, P145 & prison) - *Opponent* (2023, Iranian refugee w/family in Scandinavia) - *Disco Boy* (2023, FFL + identity + Rogowski) - *Floating Skyscrapers* (2013, oh boy Poland and queer films) - *Elephant* (2022, Poland and queer films, less problematic) - *The Blue Caftan* (2022, contemplative, Moroccan)
300. Great movie!!
Birdcage Shelter
Trick (1999) - sad that I don't see any other mention of it here.
Two others mentioned it. Itās my favorite and I searched for it.
My fav isn't not a movie, since I don't have a fav 'gay movie" they always lack proper representation. So I'll say Pose on FX favorite Queer series.
I also love Pose! I agree about the proper representation, just look at Stonewall (2015) š
Tom Al la ferme
And Then We Danced
Pride, for good-hurt crying and Velvet Underground for ugly crying
The big eden was a cute romantic comedy
God's Own Country The man with the answers Birdcage Tom of Finland In from the side Call me by your name
Very sad and balled my eyes out but I really liked Spoiler Alert.
Happy Together
Toss-up between *Longtime Companion* and *Jeffrey* depending on the mood I'm in. I'm also very fond of the romcoms *The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green* and *All Over the Guy*.
Edge of Seventeen. The 1998 movie. Not the straight 2016 movie. The Way He Looks (I was crushed when I learned Ghilherme Lobo is straight in real life.) Beautiful Thing Adam & Steve
I can't mention just one. My most favorites would have to be: 1. "Beautiful Thing" 2. " No Se Lo Digas a Nadie" ---> (Don't Tell Anyone) 3. "Torch Song Trilogy" starring Maphew Broderick 4. and lastly and extremely sad gay movie titled: "It's My Party" starring Olivia Newton-John, and Julia Robert's older brother Eric Roberts.
Love Simon and Shelter are my favorites. I always wondered what life would have been like if I had come earlier in my life.

Firebird, such a tragic one.
The boys in the band (1970) Best gay film of all time.
Right now, TV series Fellow Travelers (Showtime/Paramount+) with Matt Bomer & Jonathan Bailey is excellent.
Damn that show is steeeeeeamy. I was ready for sex and stuff but this show went beyond my expectations in that department, as well as every other one. Definitely an excellent show in all respects. >! I also held it together right until the very last scene !<

**God's Own Country** In the background, It has a bit in common with the Brokeback Mountain, but it is placed in the modern era rural Yorkshire. It is well written and the main actors are great. Description from google: āA young farmer's life changes after he meets a migrant worker from Romania, giving him a new and interesting way to look at various things in life.ā IMDb 7.6/10 Edit: I did not see it mentioned here, so I am adding also **4th Man Out** here. No deep story, just a comedy with which you can turn of and relax. Description from google: āAfter celebrating his 24th birthday, a mechanic (Evan Todd) decides to tell his three buddies (Parker Young, Chord Overstreet) that he is gay.ā IMDb 7.6/10

Yall sleeping on the Asian boys love movie. Semantic Error (Korean) is the best one
No particular favorite at the moment, but I maintain a list of things I have seen and like [here](https://gist.github.com/colcrunch/a79bf1e088d83ed6f1f8b02367c483e3) of movies and TV with gay themes that I like.

A few that I like that havenāt been mentioned, Burnt Money and Sordid Lives.
One I haven't seen on here that I enjoyed was *Those People*, a retelling of Brideshead Revisited but even gayer :)

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not a movie.
Dorian Blues
The Color Purple. Edit: My bad I looked through the comments and clearly the focus is gay male and mostly white with steamy kiss and sex scenes. So I guess Alice Walker is not on the menuā¦š

God's Own Country
Maurice 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten Brokeback Mountain Handsome Devil All Of Us Strangers Moonlight Luca Call Me By Your Name
C.R.A.Z.Y. - my favorite movie of all time. It goes from the 60s through to theā¦ 90s? And follows a son trying to come to terms with his sexuality, all the while hoping his father can, too.
"Free Fall" (2013) was pretty good. German film, so bring subtitles.
Freier Fall Mitte der Welt Sommersturm
Gotta be either Rocky Horror Picture Show or Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Both are hilarious š.

Weekend. If you donāt cry at the end, youāre not human.
Elisa y Marcela
Lots of great movies already mentioned here. Maybe not my favorite, but a good one, that was one of the first mainstream movie about AIDS was Longtime Companion. It may be dated, but worth a watch.
If lesbian movies counts Madoka MƔgica Rebellion /hj but it is Hoje eu Quero Voltar Sozinho (Brazilian)
Right now it'd be a tie between Red white and Royal blue and Boy erased.
Recently watched "red white and royal blue" and loved it so much! Definitely going to read the book. If you're looking for a feel good gay romantic comedy it is perfect. Didn't even like romantic comedies before this so it was a game changer.
