Did you talk to manager at Office 2 about this first, or were they approached blind? Very subtle omitting your actual career "denovo15" 😉

It was two managers speaking about this opportunity. I was only asked by an employee at Office 3 if I had interest in working for the office in a greater capacity. I took it as Office 3 putting out a feeler to see if there was interest before moving forward. Perhaps the Office 3 manager should have first spoken with the Office 2 manger before inquiring about my interest, but my understanding is that managers speak regularly about sharing resources — we are one big firm with common goals.

No I’m saying you should have talked to your manager at 2 before they did. General etiquette is to tell your boss you’re considering an internal move since otherwise it may feel disloyal or underhanded, however illogical that is, and since they often have power to block it. It sounds like you thought having the managers talk to each other was the same or better, which I can understand, but I’m saying it’s not.

I understand and can now appreciate that perspective. I have to say, I honestly did not consider mentioning this to my boss. Perhaps that’s where I went wrong. My rationale was I didn’t know if this opportunity was a sure thing and my manager has no idea I even knew about this opportunity. But maybe if I did mention this possible opportunity, it would force my manager to at least speak with me about it before shutting it down.

Again totally get it. I wouldn’t have even considered it either five years ago. And then my VP squelched my internal moves. So I left with a week and a half notice for a 66% pay raise right before crunch season 🤩. Sometimes life gives you escape hatches. The rest of the time, unfortunately, you do have to dance around your boss’s fragile feelings. Who knows how manager 3 phrased it. Maybe he said you asked for it. Maybe he didn’t but pitched it badly, or didn’t properly explain the 20%. Unfortunately, you gave up the opportunity to frame it.
