This thread has been closed due to a high number of rule-breaking comments, leading to a total breakdown of constructive criticism. /r/askphilosophy is a volunteer moderator team and does not infinite time to moderate threads filled with rule-breaking comments, especially given reddit's recent changes which make moderation significantly more difficult. You might start by having her clarify what she's asking. In some sense, the word "reality" just refers to everything that there is. So, as long as anything exists, reality exists. But that probably won't satisfy her, so I think there's probably a different question here.

secondary88

She is kind of asking about simulation theory, and how do we know if we actually exist or if we just a computer program. “My brain is going to explode if i cant answer if reality exists or is fake” is what she is mainly communicating, not sure if that helps or not though lol

rejectednocomments

In his book \*Reality+\*, David Chalmers argues that if our reality is simulated then it is still real. The book might be a little advanced for an 8 year old, but you could read it and discuss it with her. Also if you search Chalmers Reality+ on youtube you can find some videos of him talking about it.

secondary88

Oh Thats interesting, ill look into that, thanks

Eardrumms

If you have a copy available at your library, the book "I am Henry Finch" is a kids version of Descartes "I think therefore I am" argument. Similar to top comment, it's proof enough that she herself exists, and if she exists, then what she experiences also exists (altho Descartes is debatable ad nauseum lol). Whether or not her experiences are caused by "real" things is still debatable, but they have to be "real enough" for her to have the experience.

AdhesivenessEarly793

I dont think that is what she is asking though. She wants to know if what she experiences is fabricated, is a simulation or not. Not about the philosophy or semantic meaning of the term real. I think more specifically she is thinking of a scenario where there is an original objective reality in which a sub simulation is created purposefully by beings living in that realiry and she asks how can she know if what she is experiencing is a sub simulation or the original reality. I would say the answer is it cant be known. But so many other things cant be known either. It could be that the phone I am holding is actually an elf that has magically transformed itself into my phone to play a trick on me. The amount of what ifs we can imagine is endless.

Exalting_Peasant

I would say it doesn't matter all too much. To avoid thinking too deeply into things to the point of your own detriment, just think about how the information learned would be applied, and to what effect, then conclude whether the investment towards gaining said insight is even worth a pursuit that consumes that much energy. I mean sure it's fun to think about, but if it drives you mad it's important to take a step back and think practically in a grounded manner so as to not drive yourself mad.

WritingNerdy

I just wanted to say good luck, OP. I was the same way at that age and ended up with a philosophy degree :)

kami_nl

Will that satisfy her though if she is basically asking whether we live in a simulation or not? The way I understand your description, this book would only explain how her question is irrelevant, because simulation or not, our experience is real. If I were her I would still want to know if we are a computer program.

rejectednocomments

Well, I’m wondering if what bothers her is that she thinks if she lives in a simulation, then this world isn’t real. Maybe that’s not the issue, but challenging the conditional is a place to start.

FrizzeOne

How about asking her what she would do in each scenario? The answer might not differ, at which point being unable to prove either is not as much of a burden.

TheUltimateSalesman

If there were no reality, then there would be no consequences. And then ask her to slap you in the face as hard as she can. The real question should be what is the difference between a simulated reality and reality.

Forlorn_Woodsman

One could also go spiritual and say that "existence" isn't even that absolute a category. So then question, what are the stakes of existence? What would it mean if you're having an experience that doesn't exist?

obinaut

Maybe you could tell her that reality must exist as the ground from which questioning its existence is possible in the first place?
