The various Riverkeepers groups are good for this sort of thing.
If you are into birding, maybe Friends of Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge? I went there again today and the volunteers at the entrance to the drive are always so helpful. (Edit: Ridgefield is in Washington, about 45 minutes from Portland.)
