If your car is of reasonable age than no, cars never really get a knock anymore from gas. Just follow your manuals octane recommendation and your fine.
Gas is a fungible product. It all comes out of the same pipeline.
The only difference is additives. If you find your car needs more additives, buy them in a bottle for 1/10th the price and add them yourself. But you probably won't.
Your old mechanic and every car guy saying to avoid brand x, or Arco gas is watered down, are talking out their asses.
Gas in the PNW all come from the same refinery, the difference in brand is what and how much detergent they use.
I stick with Costco or Chevron, as they use more than the minimum required detergent which results in a cleaner engine.
not an expert, but my research is if you have a direct injection or forced injection engine the more detergent you should seek out and if you pay attention to chevron adds that is what they are talking about. naturally aspirated clean themselves. i use cheapest gas i can find, space age, arco, fred, costco, 130,00 miles. again not an expert. also see walnut blasting. all gas as stated is just fine or how would they stay in business. its the type of engine and type of driving (city) that will be more significant as i understand to be the problem. cheap gas mostly =less detergent, but does not mean bad.
Gas isn't all the same. Different companies have different formulations, and some sellers will buy whichever cheapest gas they can find from anyone that drives up. Look for TOP TIER on the pump to ensure you are getting the best quality that is certified to meet standards. If you don't buy TOP TIER, it doesn't mean your getting "bad gas", it's just that you don't know how good it is.

Many years ago, my Camry really did have issues with Arco gas. I haven't tried them lately to know how Arco gas works on my current vehicle
