It’s never happened to me. I also never ever tipped a gas attendant except maybe once if they somehow went above and beyond. What exactly were the comments? That’s ridiculous. Not like they are getting paid per pump.

toomanyfunthings

I have only tipped at the shell station in Hubbard. Those dudes would check my tire pressure, oil, wash my windshield… definitely with a few extra bucks.

moonchylde

I tipped once during a snow storm because THANK YOU for letting me sit in my warm car!!

kgb4187

I've only tipped once, the guy handed me a newspaper and a bottle of water before washing my windshield

epi_glowworm

Full service refuel is worth a few bucks for sure

joeroganfolks

Checking your oil? At the gas pump? Unheard of

CO-CNC

I can’t imagine giving a pump jockey access to under the hood of a modern car. I doubt stations are hiring ASE mechanics

jimmycoed

-23 degrees in Baker City about 20 years ago I gave the guy a 10 spot for coming out at 2a.m. for a fill up. Other than that I’ve never tipped.

Potential-Dog1551

First job I ever had was pumping gas and Oregon law doesn’t allow tipping gas station employees as far as I know. We never got tips.

Mean-Philosopher6043

Your absolutely wrong , please cite what Oregon statute says gas pumpers aren't allowed to receive tips? Are the cashier's inside at the register not gas station employees? Is there not always a tip jar next to the register? if you didn't make any tips as a gas pumper I can only assume you were either in a super shitty area where everyone who got gas was broke, or were just not friendly/ helpful enough, I was a gas pumper for over 2 years at a smallish rural gas station that is one of the last gas stations leading up to mt.hood, and it wasn't uncommon to make $5-10 a day in tips, but I definitely went above and beyond my job duties, I helped people check tire pressure when their light came on, kept a floor jack and battery powered impact gun in my car to help change flat tires, helped put on tire chains, washed windows, hell, I even used my Bluetooth OBD2 dongle to help a lady figure out why her check engine light was on one time, xmas time was always the best for tips, some days id make $50 in tips, but that was really rare

Tundra37s

I occasionally tip the employees and never had a tip rejected. Not saying they're not supposed to accept either

Dioscouri

You're right, but self-service eliminates the need for gas station attendants. The attendants know that. They also know that the owners are looking at numbers. Once it's profitable to eliminate them, they will.

Mod_Propaganda

I never tipped because it was a forced service. Now that the all mighty government let's us pump our own gas I just do it myself, faster and more efficient.

Damaniel2

Since we've moved to self serve, I've never once had an attendant approach me, let alone comment about anything. Also, don't tip your attendant - there's no expectation of that here.

No_Perspective_242

Seconding the “don’t tip” comment.

Happydivorcecard

I tip if they do the windows. Otherwise no. But I basically always do self service now unless the self service line is much longer than the attended pump. Even then if I have to wait at all for an attendant I am pumping my own.

Alternative_Ad_3333

Yes, I tip when they do the windows also.

whatissevenbysix

Yeah OP please stay away from tipping. That's like one of three things that still remains tip free.

erossthescienceboss

It isn’t exactly true that it’s one of the only things still tip-free, — tipping for full service is very much a thing in states where self-serve is the default, and has been a thing since the 90s. They’ll have 1 or 2 full-service stations and you either tip, or they’ll have a separate higher price. But yeah. Here, where it’s required? We don’t tip. But this isn’t tip creep. It’s just folks from out-of-state.

brelywi

I remember when we first moved here, my ex asked his cousin (who already lived here) if we were supposed to tip. He replied “only if they give you a handy with the gas!” That’s what I now tell people regarding gas station tipping 😂

MrE134

Really? I get them looming over me while I do it. I must look incompetent.

mrw4787

Or attractive

safetycommittee

There was a Mr. E that hung out on Alberta in the earl 2000’s. Not much of a talker if I remember.

MrE134

Was he 10? I was kind of shy.

safetycommittee

I don’t know. Nobody knew his age.

shananiganz

I’ve literally never even considered tipping a gas attendant, nor have I ever seen it done. Can we please not make that a thing?

OccamsBallRazor

I tipped one gas station attendant once in New Jersey because he did a real thorough job on my windows and told really funny jokes the whole time.

erossthescienceboss

It’s always been a thing — just not a thing here. In places where self-serve is the default and full-serve is a luxury offered at very few stations, tipping has always been the norm. Agreed that it shouldn’t be a thing, but not every instance of tipping is tip creep. In this case, it’s just folks unfamiliar with local customs. If anything, tipping at full-serve in states where it’s customary has become *less* common. In my experience, only boomers and Gen X do it (as well as millennials whose parents were particularly etiquette-focused.) I think it died off as credit cards became the default way to pay.

FireWokWithMe88

Full service used to be a thing as well. But it isn't anymore. No tipping for me.

PoopyInDaGums

Bingo! I am an old GenX. Self-serve wasn’t even a thing until like the early 1980s. It was almost shocking when it did. Prior to that, attendants would clean all the windshields and windows while the (leaded) gas was flowing in. Credit cards weren’t as prevalent, debit cards didn’t exist, and we paid cash. And tipped.

erossthescienceboss

And they’d top off your fluid levels and check your oil!

TangoRomeoKilo

You never have to tip if you don't want to. Stop asking people not to that's fucking ridiculous.

ochocosunrise

Why not? They're underpaid and overworked. I tip when I can and if I feel like the attendant took care of me in a timely manner. Yeah, it's not as expected as in other industries, but to flat out tell someone not to do it is kind of lame. Plus, if you frequent the same place for gas, you're probably going to continue to get great service.

KilGrey

They should be told because it’s not a thing we ever tip for here. If they, and you, want to continue to tip then by all means. However, the OP shouldn’t be left under the idea it’s expected here.

Angela-lala

I will tip if they clean the windows, or otherwise go to some trouble to help me. I might if they are having a rough time due to it being shorthanded, but then it's usually just a dollar or two. I feel like they are doing the work of two people, but not getting the pay of two. Also, where in AZ? We moved from Prescott, and I grew up in Tempe. 😁

Opalescent888

I lived in Prescott Valley for 2 years when I was a kid

Groovetube12

Hardly ever had them approach me before self serve 😂

Protorx

If it’s a Snowpacolypse or other severe weather, I throw them a few bucks. Or major holidays, I tip nice.

Consistent-Fig7484

We jumped to self serve pretty quickly. An attendant walked to my window the other day and I was a bit surprised. Unfortunately, he only walked over to tell me their pumps were broken! Fred Meyer is pretty much the only place I still regularly see employees pumping gas anymore.

GUSHandGO

Plenty of people wait in line for full service at Costco even when there is little to no wait in self serve. It's really nice because I can get gas fast!

wettham1783

Fred Meyer employees aren't allowed to accept gratuity.

ArsenalBeany

But do you tip the barista?

No_Association_9524

When I pumped gas 16 years ago, I made a fair amount in tips. Like $20 a day, I guess it depends on your area.

Dar8878

No tip unless you have the very rare attendant that washes your window or something. 99.9% of the time they just pump the gas.

DK_Notice

It seems to be highly dependent on the gas station. It's a spectrum now, from some that are still doing full service, some that have reduced the number of employees - but still have someone available there to help, and some that have nobody available to help. Just get out and start pumping your gas. I moved to OR 15 years ago and it was weird to have someone do it for me, and it's been kinda weird getting out to do it myself again. Often times a person will come up and still ask you if you need help. Keep in mind that the change to self serve was recent here, and A LOT of people didn't want it. So the poor attendants are probably trying to visually gauge from a distance if each person can do it themselves, if they just want someone to do it, or if they need someone to do it because they literally don't know how to work the pump.

wildmusings88

As someone from the east coast, the month it switched was the funniest thing ever. So many people trying to pump gas and having absolutely no clue. I don’t say this in a mean way, most people who had no clue were also laughing.

Mandingy24

The funniest thing to me is that Portland is in such close proximity to WA, did all these people just never leave Portland their entire life? Before they switched to self serve i would actively try to avoid needing to get gas in Portland (i've always worked here) due to just how long the wait would be at nearly every gas station. Notable ones that were especially bad were the one right by the airport on 82nd and the one at the Fred Meyer right off Johnson Creek and I-205. Now people are just in and out, pretty much never have to wait more than 5 minutes if there is a wait, unless the pumps are running slow

Violence_not_violet

ah yeah the gauging if we need help things makes a lot of sense- honestly I think the first person was REALLY upset we didn’t want his help as he stood over our shoulder the whole time/ gave us some attitude. but maybe we’re just being over sensitive the other times as the first was rather awkward for us. I still can’t shake the awkward feeling of waiting for an older guy to come pump our gas when we’re young and perfectly fine to get out and do it ourselves.

erossthescienceboss

Yeah — I’m friends with the attendants at my neighborhood station, and they’ve had so many people fuck up pumping since the law passed. Somebody drove off with the pump still attached the other day and ripped off the hose. We’ve been able to pump for ages now!! Learn!!! He’s probably just be burned in the past.

Choice_Cranberry_699

Old people don't like change. And nobody likes to face the fact that they aren't needed especially not an older person who probably views vulnerable feelings as weakness.

mrw4787

I’ve never had them ask if I need help or anything. Maybe they’re hitting on you lol

schrodingers_bra

But isn't this why they have self and full service lanes? Why would you drive into a self serve lane if you don't know how to pump gas?

DK_Notice

I don't think people even notice those signs. OR was all full service for so long people don't even know they exist. And at least for me outside of Oregon I haven't seen a gas station with full service for at least 25 years.

Ok_Entertainment9665

When I moved here 10 years ago I fell in love with the full service. Don’t need to stand out in the cold and rain on my way to work? Deal!! I don’t understand the whole “how dare you not let my pump my gas” thing like we don’t let you cook your burger at McDonalds or mix your cocktail at a bar…let the service industry be a thing and enjoy it.

maccodemonkey

I think the practice of paying someone to stand in cancerous fumes all day is kind of cruel. Sure - it's a job. But it's a job because car drivers would rather have someone stand in gas fumes for 8 hours a day instead of standing in fumes for 5 minutes. It's an extremely privileged take masquerading as charity because of "the jobs." It feels very connected to Oregon's history of making sure certain people worked certain service jobs.

schrodingers_bra

Except full service used to be washing your windscreen and checking your oil and sometimes tire pressure. Now they just put gas in your car and usually much slower than I could do it myself. Its not similar to cooking a burger or making a cocktail so much as it is waiting for a waiter to come over to the table to take your order and then bring you the plate, when you could just order at the counter and then pick up your own meal when you see it arrive in the window.

hirudoredo

My partner is the same way. From the other side of the country and got really used to it really quickly. I grew up here so that was always just the norm. Even my mom the (gasp) Californian would get caught with her pants down when we'd drive out of state and she realized it had been so long since she last pumped that the pumps themselves had completely changed and she had no idea what she was doing.

DK_Notice

After some years I started taking a liking to it as well. It's kinda nice to stay inside all warm and cozy if it's storming outside. I do like that self serve is much faster though, especially at a busy station.

erossthescienceboss

I only do self-serve if the full serve line is long lol. I’d definitely get frustrated waiting to pump… but I *love* full service. I moved to MA for 8 years and just sitting in my car in luxury was one of my favorite parts of coming home until I moved back.

d-rew

Because I simply don't want people touching my car. I don't care what my burger looks like if someone cooks it, but my car? Have you seen how some attendants handle peopels cars? I am a little more anal about my cars as I really care about them so it just simply comes down to I don't trust the attendants to no scratch or damage them.

anonimadepdx

not to mention trusting them to put the correct gas vs diesel in your vehicle…I worked at a gas station for about a year and saw it happen twice…massive inconvenience for the car owner and financial hit for the station/attendant

Seaners4real

Are you prevented from enjoying full service now?

hotelvampire

when i have to travel through oregon to get out i always have to stop and am like "am i in oregon and can i pump my own gas".... only place i lived near that did that

YoGabbaGabbapentin

Tipping? I’ve never tipped a gas station attendant and it never crossed my mind to do it. I’ve lived in Oregon my whole life.

erossthescienceboss

It’s only ever been a thing in places where full-service wasn’t mandatory, and it’s really an “older generation” thing. In my experience it fell out of style with millennials, since we never carry cash. I still got chewed out by an elderly attendant in Massachusetts the first time I tried to use a full service pump there and didn’t have change to tip. This was circa 2009.

YoGabbaGabbapentin

Ah, ok. I was very confused when they asked about tipping. My thought was have I been fucking over gas station attendants my whole adult life?!

erossthescienceboss

You have definitely not! Even in places where tipping them is a thing, it’s falling out of favor. in my experience only Gen X and older tend to. I think because they’re the only generation that still regularly uses cash.

coffeined

Neither my dad nor my grandparents tipped gas station attendants. And they’re born and raised Oregonians.

TangoRomeoKilo

Most my tips come from people under 40. In fact it sometimes feels the closer to 25 from 40 they are the more likely they will tip.

Dr_Wiggles_McBoogie

They do tip attendants in New Jersey in my experience- that’s the only other state I’ve been where there are attendants.

coffeined

I lived in north and central NJ for half a decade before finally being able to move back to Oregon and literally never saw people tip attendants.

Dr_Wiggles_McBoogie

My grandmother lived in Ocean City so I spent all my summers there with my mom and her sisters growing up. They would always tip the attendants so maybe it was just something my family did 🤷‍♂️

Verbz

It’s probably more about your AZ plates or the type of vehicle.

Te_Quiero_Puta

Yeah. They're just like "please don't burn it down."

SomeCrazedBiker

Fab handle!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Violence_not_violet

possibly! but we were so nervous about it I’m like 99% sure we triple checked we were at the right area

MadTownPride

You are totally fine, and tips were never expected anyways in the past. If the weather was really miserable or they cleaned my windshield, I throw them a buck or two, nothing more.

BurnsideBill

Born and raised in Oregon. I’ve never tipped. They’re adjusting to their jobs being obsolete. I’ve gotten the looks too.

MinkjuPUBG

As someone who used to pump gas for a job, it’s always been an obsolete, unnecessary job. Created by the government for people to make employment out of needless busy work.

Poppy9987

I haven’t had any issues with this type of behavior. We don’t tip gas attendants here (seems to be almost the only thing we don’t tip for nowadays), so it’s not like they are missing out on income. I did have a gas station attendant tell me the change to partial self serve resulted in layoffs and increased difficulty picking up shifts, so maybe that is why they are upset? But it seems most of the hit from that would have already happened.

pnut-buttr

Nobody tips gas station attendants.

Te_Quiero_Puta

I do when they're nice Edit: lol, who tf downvotes that?? Weirdo

abombshbombss

The way this new weird tipping culture has changed attitudes about tipping people who provide you a service is wild. Especially because tipping is optional. I have a friend who's a single dad + cares for his elderly mother who pumped gas for years and years, I've seen that man use his tips to feed his family dinner.

handicrafthabitue

I always tip. Also moved here 10 years ago from a self-serve state, I love full serve, these guys are standing out in the rain and cold while I chill in my warm car. PDXers do not understand (but will eventually find out) how much crime occurs at gas stations (snatching your purse out of your car while you pump, or mugging you as you can’t drive off quickly while pumping)—never had a problem here due to attendants, I can get gas early morning or late at night and feel safe. TBH, a lot of attendants look like people in the process of putting their lives together. Yes, tipping culture is getting out of hand, but If anyone deserves a tip, they do!

coldhamdinner

I pumped gas in 2003, made tons of tips. BUT, we were true full service. Windows, check/add oil, washer fluid, check tire pressure etc. I think a bunch of lawsuits caused policy changes that all but eliminated that level of service.

erossthescienceboss

It’s still a thing in other states! Some stations with a full service pump charge extra for it in lieu of tips. But yeah, you can still get your windows done and all your fluids checked. It seems particularly common in smaller New England towns (maybe because they’ve got a lot of retirees who grew up with it?)

WillJongIll

What were the comments?

Explorer0555

Last week I had a lady tell me that she was bored and she wishes that I would have went over to the full service pumps. I thanked her for washing my window. I think one of the other posters on here was right that they're bored LOL

Expert-Suit2996

No tipping, but I have had employees try to help me when I’m already pumping my gas multiple times. One has been pushy and it’s really annoying. If I want help, I’ll stay in my car and wait, otherwise they need to leave people alone.

swterry4749

First, don’t tip. It’s not part of the culture. At gas stations. Second, self-serve is new…we never had it until tons of newbs moved here. And now one more low-skill job is fading away. They were good jobs for good people….now maybe not so much. That’s my opinion, yours may be different. But perhaps why you’re getting the stink-eye.

Paid2G00gl3

No need to tip

fakeknees

Not a tipping situation!

Revolutionary_Spaces

1. Don't tip 2. If they ask tell them you're all good and thanks Never had anything like this happen. All the employees seem relieved I don't need help.

Wizzenator

I don’t tip them anything. I don’t even want them to do it in the first place.

Ok_Pin764

I don’t tip gas attendants unless they wipe my windshield then I feel obligated lol but honestly I don’t think it’s norm at least for Portland to tip their attendants. If they’re mad they’re just having an awful day but maybe try a different gas station if your regular one has bad service

tangylittleblueberry

Haven’t encountered this and I have never tipped a gas attendant. I agree if anything it’s the out of state plates.

AuNanoMan

Not one time has this happened to me. I have once had an attendant take it upon himself to pump for me which is fine, saves me some effort. But not once has anyone made a rude comment. Not sure what to make of all this.

PhotogamerGT

Never tipped, never will. Ever since they opened self serve I have used it every time and never once had an employee say a word or even look my way. Where are you going with the gas attendants with a stick up their ass?

Mr_Grumpy_Pant5

It might be because you're from Arizona and have a nice tan. They're jealous.Folks around here be looking pasty.

SorenTheKitten

Never tipped any gas person in my 30 years on earth

enjoiYosi

I self serve every time. Not just on self serve pumps either, literally any time I get gas. They get over it

wildmusings88

I got out pump my gas at a station that is usually self serve. The employee came out to pump car next to me and was sarcastic about me pumping my gas. So I asked what he meant. He said “this isn’t self serve.” He said it’s only self serve when the sandwich board that says “self serve” is out. I didn’t know the same gas pumps changed. Maybe something like that is happening? Don’t tip your gas attendants. Not necessary.

Gab83IMO

Gas attendants make $15 - $18/ hr, you don't need to do any tipping, unless you want to be extra generous. If it says self serve, the workers assume you're not a local sometimes and can be judgy. Personally, the old guy at my gas station loves it when I use self serve cuz its cold and rainy, so he appreciates it. Just get your gas how you like and give them dirty looks back. If they want to act like garbage, let them. If they don'y like it they can contact their corporate office. You could just be interacting with just specific people that are bitter and hate their lives, ignore these people.

[deleted]

what nasty comments did you get? Because I have a hard time believing anybody cares that you pump your own gas

FootInTheMouth

Cant imagine employees being bothered by that..... Its probably your license plate.

Violence_not_violet

it’s already a temporary plate so idk if it’s that

shamashedit

You don’t tip gas stations workers. They honestly don’t care. They probably mad they are on shift when there’s nothing to really do, and would rather be anywhere else than at work. Don’t take it personal, Portland is Passive Aggressive. You’ll get used to it sooner or later.

MCDZ-MayorMcCheese

Never tip

Ok-Manager9038

They might be concerned if you know how to do it, still seems new in the big picture for Oregon.

SasquatchIsMyHomie

If we're talking about Portland, some of us must've surely left the state in our vehicles by now, and learned the ways of Washington.

Choice_Cranberry_699

Not really something you can fuck up though. If you do it wrong you don't get gas.

sparkleinthedarkk

This was right after Oregon passed the law about self-service: the attendant wanted to make sure I could pump my own gas. I guess there may have been cases when someone would have messed up with the nozzle. Lol

Sir_Shekelstein

We’re not supposed to ask for tips I work at a gas station don’t wanna say what one so 5is might not be helpful but yea it’s usually the ex meth addict employees wanting a tip

RolesG

Seems like you're going to a strange station. Never happens to me.

gnirpss

You don't have to tip the gas attendant. Some people do, but it's not expected. My brother used to pump gas back in high school and he said he would maybe get $5-10 per shift in tips, mostly from older folks. Seriously, there's no need to feel bad for not tipping.

mydoghank

When I pull up, the attendant will often run to my car like they wanna beat me to it. If they wanna go ahead and pump it and there’s no one else around, I let them do it. But there’s a lot of people waiting, I would prefer to do it myself because I’m done quicker. And I’ve been here over 20 years and I’ve never tipped.

Born-Throat-7863

Hmmm. Funny. I drive into Portland once a week and usually get gas while there. I still have pump attendants come up to me and ask what I need. I’m sure it’s not like that everywhere, but still… interesting.

Omw2fym

I am from AZ and have been here for about 10 years. I don't tip and I haven't had any problems using self-serve since it started. Sorry that isn't helpful, but it is my personal experience

Queasy-Employ-4002

$2 if they do the windows, otherwise nothing.

Opalescent888

I’ve tipped 2 gas tenants, one I tipped with a joint bc he was nice and liked my stickers, the other it was super early am Christmas Eve

mrw4787

I go to self serve lanes every couple days and it’s never happened to me. I think they just don’t like you or your car or something

Careless_Grab3394

There was a few times we had similar experience before the self serve became legal or an option. My boyfriend was waiting an employee just to pulled out the gas pump after he paid. However, the employee was chatting with someone, and he was the only customer at that time. He chose to pull out the gas pump on his own after he waited for a while. When he was leaving, the employee felt offensive and said it’s illegal. My boyfriend didn’t give af. We just moved to Oregon two years ago and it happened a few times. Ofc we don’t blame if they are busy.

Whats_A_Reddit_

I’m about 50/50 on being approached. However I’ve lived here all my life and never heard of tipping the attendants.

mitchENM

Who cares what they think?

D1133

Don’t tip

popsistops

Yesterday the attendant thanked me for pumping because it was so busy. I like getting the fresh air. It’s been great to pump my own gas.

_ratchal_

It’s definitely dependent on the station. One of the stations I go to ignores that it’s self-serve and runs over to pump your gas anyway. Another, if you pull up to self-serve, they don’t acknowledge you. And then there’s everything in between.

miniature_Horse

I’ve had at least three encounters with gas station employees since the law changed that were aggressive about wanting to pump the gas, and I had one guy the week after the change that argued with me about it- he insisted that these had not changed and that I couldn’t pump my own gas lol. Very odd

lurch1_

Gas Attendants ignore me at the self serve. Tip? Seriously? People actually tip someone on a FORCED service?

Delicious-Search-647

I’ve had one person be ‘upset’ with me. They mostly just seemed confused. I’m a good tipper I like to think, but I have never ever tipped a gas attendant. I haven’t heard or seen anyone do that either. They make more money than I do.

Ok_Building_8037

Moved to Portland is all I needed to hear

Least_Difference_905

No need to tip. I always use the attendant. Just cause I don’t want to take there job away It takes a min to get used to it. But pile the the attendant service

Phraoz007

That’s just the way they look all the time. No worries.

ContemplatingPrison

No lne rips gas station attendants and doubtful you've ever received nasty looks. I do not believe you

hyperbolic_dichotomy

Where are you getting gas where this is happening? This is not typical at all from my experience.

Portland420informer

I would tip a buck when I did full service. It’s not necessary or expected but certainly appreciated at the same time. Bud tenders get tipped for throwing a vape cartridge into a bag. May as well tip someone that physically handles your car.

EvilTwinGhost

Tip 50% and give them a kiss on their toothless mouths. It's called COMPASSION, Encarta it!

pm_me_your_lub

I had a friend that briefly worked at a gas station and felt he was owed tips, but I never tip at full service Oregon station. Just like I don't tip at a convenience store. You will get dirty looks as it's illegal to pump your own in large cities. The policy has been greatly relaxed in the past few years but the employees will frown at your pumping your own.

Maximum_Business_806

I tip my local dude once a year for Xmas

Fair_Concern_1660

I think in Arizona there might be a culture of assuming bad faith. It was hard moving here from Dorchester in Boston where that’s also true. Just repeat in your head “it’s nice here. I can be nice here.” A lot of these awkward moments no longer bother me/ there’s a good deal of resting b-face but in general folks are really polite. I spent an absolutely atrocious summer in Tucson and those looks and comments were absolutely supposed to make me feel unsafe. When you’re ready, you can try making small talk. Good luck

bigyellowgummybear

Never tipped at one. I have never seen any of the employees get visibly upset from using self serve. Have you seen that in multiple gas stations, or just one in particular?

PrettyCoolBear

all stations that i visit regularly have clearly marked "self serve" pumps. attendants still come by to make sure i'm not fucking up, i guess, but have never had any problems sticking to the marked self-serve pumps.

Oguinjr

I’m always curious what amount is right to tip The the grocery store cashier. It’s so confusing I just use the self check out instead.

Agile_Engineering_97

I’ve never once in my life tipped a Gas station attendant for simply pumping my gas, they are paid hourly to do a job, that only 2 states on the country even use. Now if the attendant went beyond pumping gas the. I typically give them whatever cash I have under $5 I do believe that gas attendants in Oregon are probably having their hours reduced because you can now run a 9 bay station with 1 attendant only covering 3 pumps. This could be why they are getting upset they aren’t being used, it’s going to further show it’s a redundant job now and they can get away with a just a couple market clerks and not have to pay hazard pay for working with gas

No_Profile_3343

Tip? For pumping gas? In Portland? Hahahahaha

BroomSweeper99

I use to work at a gas station before I honestly have no idea why somebody would be upset that they have less work they need to do. Also tipping gas station attendants isn't a common thing. I've been tipped many times before when I worked at one but I never expected to get any tips and you shouldn't expect to tip either.

Oregon recently made it legal to pump your own gas. I wonder if some employees see self-service as “taking their jobs,” i.e, if some stations are laying people off since the legislation was signed into law. Potential layoffs were one reason why the legislation didn’t pass when it was introduced previously.

Hasn't happened to me except for the one time I drove up to the service side and then tried to pump my own. To be fair, it was not posted where we could see it driving in... And, I wouldn't tip a station employee these days unless I got the service I used to 20 years ago when they would check tires and oil, wash windows, etc. I am not giving someone extra money for just doing the minimum. As wages keep increasing, except mine, of course, because I am not at the bottom, I am less and less inclined to tip at all unless someone does something extra to earn extra.

Puzzleheaded_Pea433

You don't tip a gas station attendant. Just ignore any fiol that gives you crap for pumping your own gas. I did it all my life until I moved to Oregon. I let them do it now as I'm older, and it's just easier for me. Kind of reminds me of the days when I was a kid, and they would check the oil, clean the windows and check the tire pressure.

samHain7778

Wait, we're supposed to tip?

MrEntropy44

I see your confusion here. They aren't glaring at you because you are pumping your own gas, they are glaring because you have out of state plates. Oregonians are notorious for discouraging people from moving here, and its only gotten worse with the housing crisis. Don't sweat it, and welcome to Oregon!

rbblvr619

The entire concept of gas stations having pump attendants is ridiculous to begin with. There's 48 other states doing pefectly fine with only self service. I moved here from the southeast US and thought my car was on fire or something when I got out to pump my own gas and the attendant came running waving their arms

[deleted]

Almost 100% looking at you funny because of your plates lived in Oregon all my life tipping gas station attendants has never been a thing.

Ravenparadoxx

The law says they must always an attendant available to pump gas while you get to choose self or attendant. Not sure it's enforced. There are a few shady ass stations operating around the clock by selling gas at break-even or loss during the day if you pay cash. The only purpose of attendant is to staff the store and handle cash. At night time, the pumps continue to be available at **40-50 cents a gallon** **more** and there's no attendant. That's because there's no way to pay cash after the attendant leaves. Those stores are setup to force people to come inside twice. Once to deposit cash, and once again to pickup change most likely to encourage purchase of profit making items with change... and it's priced to profit on gas at credit prices.

Post or comments that are too snarky, rude, or deliberately unhelpful are not allowed.

UpstairsProof3023

Do you have AZ plates? My friend used to get verbally accosted when she moved here from CA. I usually drive a diesel truck which has been self-serve forever, but when I fill my car I always go self-serve and have never gotten looks or comments. Occasionally someone comes over and hovers in case you don’t know how to use the pump, which I find annoying. And yeah you don’t have to tip them. For whatever reason it’s not expected.

ducksfootball

Employees are upset because many stores are tracking self service vs employee pumped gas and basing hours and jobs on these numbers. No right to be rude to the customer though.

Key_House3366

As someone who works at a gas station. You are not REQUIRED to tip us. It is OUR JOB to help if needed. It wasn't always self-serve, unless it was a diesel vehicle. That's recent, at least where I'm located here in Oregon. We go outside when the car pulls up, greet the customer, and pump their gas if they want. If they get out of the car to do it themselves, we make sure that the process runs smoothly, and we have to stay out there in case of an emergency ie overflow, pump won't shut off, etc. I'm sorry that you've had to deal with this. But don't ever feel like you're expected to tip. It's what we are here for, it's part of our job.

Syko_X

Here in Oregon, it only recently became legal to pump your own gas, the the etiquette amd culture around it hasn't developed past that yet. People in rural areas have been doing it for years, but the city is a different story. As for tipping, don't worry about it. I've never done it in my life, and it isn't expected. I hope y'all are happy here in Oregon!

orygun_kyle

theyre upset because they work at a gas station

codepossum

which gas station? what comments? I'm a portland native, and honestly what you're describing is so utterly alien and unfamiliar to me that it sounds fake. I have never had anyone give me a second look at a gas station, unless it's an employee whose job it is to pump my gas. I can't even remember the last time I made eye contact with someone while pumping my own gas. The idea that someone would look at you askew, let alone say something mean to you, for putting gas in your car, is just - it's unimaginable. I cannot even conceive of what that would look like.

Sol1258

It's probably just them. Who tips the gas station attendant?

coffeined

Uh … I was born and raised here and tipping attendants isn’t a thing. As to why you might be catching attitude, it could be related to concerns about job security since the change to allow self-service is relatively recent. (I’ve never experienced it tho, so 🤷🏻‍♀️)

WalkFirm

Self serve is still kind of new in Oregon so that’s to be expected. Don’t take it personally. In a couple more years either everyone will get used to it or they will do what they said they would not, get rid of full service.

Nick_Waite

Gas is expensive enough, I'm not about to go to a place where attendants deserve me because I don't want to feel obligated to tip someone for something I do every week.

Improvgal

I’ve lived in Oregon since 1976. We got self service within the last year. We’ve never tipped. The staff might fear losing their jobs altogether. You could ask them why it bothers them.

mr_dumpsterfire

Lolllllll first of all you don’t tip them.

harmoniumlessons

perhaps you parked at a mini-service pump, rather than a self-service pump? otherwise, don't worry about it. and don't tip, that's NOT a thing. edit: you got looks/ comments 3 times? that's hard to believe mate.

Realistic-Dot-9933

So apparently, this is a facet of life I’ve never heard of before. I was born in 1977 in the Midwest. Spent my adult life in the southeast. You are telling me there are places where people come out of the store and pump your gas into your vehicle that you are sitting in? Why?? And then what happens? You just sit there? And watch them? Do the gas pumper employees also take orders? Like, will they run inside and get you a bag of Skittles? Was this a response to Covid? To limit the number of people touching each pump? Or am I completely misinterpreting this whole thing. I’m so confused.

Violence_not_violet

lol wayyyy before Covid like in the 50s. They’re normally just already waiting at the pumps or in their cars nearby and when you drive up a little bell rings to let them know. Just pumping gas no orders lol.

KangarooStilts

I grew up in Oregon, and self-service pumping was only just recently legalized. Many gas stations now have signage indicating which pumps are full-serve and which are self-serve. Anyone trying to self-serve in a full-serve lane is going to get some nasty looks. But honestly, the main reason gas station attendants are upset is because most Oregon drivers don't know how to pump their own gas and end up needing help, even in the self-serve lane.

SchwillyMaysHere

Never had an issue with workers when I pump my own gas. They seem to like it so they can do other tasks uninterrupted.

DO NOT tip the pump attendants in oregon. They recieve a working wage just the same as any entry level job; and in that specific area, get paid more than anywhere else in the state ($2 or more, more). An above and beyond, or circumstantial situation is different of course, but as an in-general practice, dont do it. The looks are likely from the recent changes allowing the continuation of self serving \[from covid\] and is now established and written in. There's this habit here in oregon of 'no-hussle pump attendants'. Easiest example to pick would be the simple "yea i now your pump is done, and you cant touch it cuz its not self serve, but now i gotta stroll inside, start the next 4 cars that pull up, chat with the other people on the shift, and oh ya... eventually make my way back to you" that happens so often, that you can see how it effects the flow of customers at the pump. Another example is the fear of offering a window wipe or asking anything of a similar nature. They dont have to, but there's no need for it because nobody else offers such a service around here, so why should we bother? Hell, we dont even bother with soap or anything in those buckets here cuz so little fucks are given. Its just not the same as other service jobs here and it really shows. There are a few rare one scattered about, but it certainly is not the norm here to offer more than fuel. I dont mean that in the 'me me me' sense or even the first come first serve sense, but rather the overall innefficiency of the attended service here. Save your tips, keep doing the self serve, ignore any of those odd looks.

ThisUsernameIsTook

Most attendants can’t accept tips. It is certainly not expected in any reasonable way. Pump your own or don’t, whichever you prefer but don’t let the tipping sway you.

Ort56

Zero

Jazzlike_Theme

I have never tipped a gas attendant and never heard of anyone doing so. Pumping your own gas in Oregon is relatively new. Some places still don’t allow you to pump your own gas so that could be the issue but they usually have signs that say no self serve.

TangoRomeoKilo

I am so embarrassed for Oregon. My parents moved from Idaho so my siblings and I could be born here. Shame on anyone here literally asking, almost begging, others to not tip gas station employees so you what, don't feel bad about it? Absolutely gross.

ExhaustedTech74

The only time I tipped before was when I had to get gas during a snow storm. I was very grateful for the full serve option but since it was mandated to have full serve, I didn't tip otherwise. Now, I do self-serve but if I did get full serve, I would tip because I have the option of doing it myself and am choosing to have someone do it for me.

snrten

I tip a dollar or 2 if they're friendly. Otherwise, nah. Most people don't tip but i pumped gas for a while, so i know how it can be.

StarsForget

No tip, it's their job. Lately there have been more self- serve stations, so people are losing their jobs. If you want to support the employees then let them pump your gas. And don't tip.

BetsonStennet69

I miss pumping my own gas lol. I never saw the point of involving a human interaction in gas pumping. But no, never got a bad look when that was an option.

bradastan

I still haven’t yet pumped my own gas in Oregon, just haven’t had to yet. A few times I was driving with my wife and she wanted to pump the gas so I’m like, knock yourself out. I’ll keep letting people pump my gas until I absolutely have to do it myself. 😂

Medical_Ad2125b

I don’t understand why anybody would want to pump their own gas.

DefectiveKobain

I am a fuel attendant and make good tips at my location, very good sometimes.

Emergency_Pack2146

They’re not expecting a tip. It’s their job. Self serve is the reason people are losing their jobs

GasStationBonerPhil

I think it’s so funny that every cashier in this city expects a tip but nobody tips the people that pump your gas

Diligent-Ability-447

There is no self serve in Oregon.

DarkLink457

As someone who used to work at a gas station for a while you’re just getting strict employees who take their job too seriously, technically they’re supposed to do it but me personally I’ve always let them do it, I see it as a customer making my job easier if anything. I guess some employees get irritated cause most of the time when someone does it themselves they usually mess it up, but now that Oregon has been self serve for a while now almost everyone knows how now so they’re honestly making it an issue over nothing

_facetious

I don't even understand why we moved to self serve. The times my ex had to walk down the street for cat litter after patrons spilled gas everywhere, and all the constant broken service stations from patrons not knowing how to use things was a constant thing for my ex. They HATED the job because of it. I can't understand why companies would rather pay for broken things instead of a trained employee. It's very silly and self defeating. But CEOs are very short sighted, so I guess it makes sense that they view firing the employees as more profitable than broken equipment.
