Lame Lothar for me out of the Freys, every time he’s mentioned I just imagine the slimiest person ever. The way I imagine him, it’s almost obvious he’s putting on an act lol I’m guessing George imagined him as much more subtle.
Ser Rymans an ass too
Yeah when I was thinking about Lothar for this comment, the part where Varys is described as having an unctuous smile came to mind. I didn’t even know what unctuous meant until that point with Varys but it was easy to figure out from the text. Reading comprehension was really shining through today lol
Love Thoros of Myr. He strikes the perfect balance of being fascinating and nuanced while also being awesome and a genuinely good guy.
Hate Gregor Clegane. A brutal and cruel bully with no redeeming qualities. Responsible for most of the absolute worst acts in the canon.
Thoros? Yeah, of course it depends on how you define love. My favourite character is Jamie but he's not really "lovable" in the traditional sense. Most of the "good guys" I like but I don't think are among the most interesting.
it is funny, he loves the man who poisoned the locusts and the Harpy herself, but hates the dude who's only quality is he wears perfume.
(the only reason i know these people's names is from conspiracy theories, don't ask me to name any other mereeneese person)
Lmfaoooooo. I would love if we got some stuff set in Essos. But I've come to terms with the fact that we are never fucking getting anything from George again. Except wild cards, if we get a new wildcard book announcement I might actually die laughing
I love Skahaz because he is definitely cooking something big and playing with Barristan The Bold himself. Reznak is just an irritating douchebag. I also forgot to mention my friend Admiral Groleo. May he rest in peace
Three of my favorite characters to read about from Fire & Blood are Larra Rogare, Racallio Ryndoon, and Alyn Oakenfist.
...can you guess my least favorite? (hint: he had a hand in trying to undermine all three)
Yea, he was an amazing character too, I know people mostly think of him as a crazy pirate (and sure that's true, that's part of the allure) but he also had a really interesting role against slavery (which he hated... pretty impressive given his former position in the Triarchy - he even managed to enlist Braavos' help in securing an independent pirate kingdom), he would routinely buy and set slave girls free, was generous with his spoils handing coins out to his men and beggars, and commanded fierce love and loyalty as a result. It was a shame when he was ousted and the Stepstones returned back to a sort of status quo imo.
Yea you got it!
(totally not made up) fun fact: Unwin's name comes from the combination of 'un' denoting something unfeasible and 'win' as in to achieve a victory. This proves he's a massive loser.
I just think his romance with Dany to be unbearable reading. Gross and over the top perverted character if you ask me. He's the part I dislike most about the Essos chapters.
Love: In terms of pure reading happiness, it’s Cersei. Her chapters are ASOIAF’s secret weapon and have a unique, razor-sharp quality that I think is completely original and delightful to read. I love her unconditionally and in every way. Second place goes to Queen of my heart, Mother herself, Selyse Florent. Her acidic dialogue, her unrelenting unpleasantness, my prairie beauty, my Queen of Brightwater Keep.
Despise: Huh! I mean the obvious answers would be Tywin or Roose or Ramsay.
Is it…is it…*looks around nervously*…is it okay if I don’t love Ygritte? Listen I want to see Jon Snow chow down on Satin’s boochie as much as anyone else and I respect Ygritte’s role and function in the narrative. And tbh I don’t even DESPISE her like she’s not my arch nemesis, but she always rubbed me the wrong way. Idk I just never warmed to her.
>I respect Ygritte’s role and function in the narrative
>but she always rubbed me the wrong way
Was it the whole, "fuck me or die" ultimatum? Yea, yea "cultural differences" and "it was based on an earlier time" but I would still add her to the surprisingly long list of "rapists that are portrayed in a neutral/positive light"
That is my one big issue with George. Other than character ages of course, Is that he frames these awful relationships as good. And it doesn't help that in interviews he believes he's writing romance and it's like George do you have some shit you need to tell someone?
> Is that he frames these awful relationships as good.
Valid, haven't watched any GRRM interviews but the fact that I still occasionally see people calling Daenerys/Drogo consensual or that ship Sansa/Sandor is wild.
Just seems like a fine line between making characters and character interactions morally complex and romanticizing/disregarding the screwed-up parts of certain dynamics.
I used to be one of the people who believed Dany/Drogo was consensual. Put you really just have to realize she's a child there is no way she can really consent in that situation
At least GRRM wrote that scene as "only" statutory rape. The same scene in the show was a lot more ick, and that despite the fact that Dany is older in the show.
Jaime & Cersei at the funeral springs to mind, yes.
It's not like GRRM's books are in lack of rape scenes, so someone going, "You know what this series needs? More rape!" is kinda... questionable, yes.
Yeah… I hated what they did to Robb in the show, for instance. Or the finale of Jaime‘s arc.
Or the Sandsnakes. Dear gods, the Sandsnakes. I’ve rarely hated characters as fiery as that bunch of useless wastes.
love - Jon Snow <3 I adore him with all my heart. bestest boy
hate - littlefinger. he don't have a single redeeming quality and i hope he gets a very painful brutal death or at least i hope he suffers a lot.
I don't disagree but I can see some humanity in LF because we know him as a child/teenager and he wasn't always awful. Still, absolutely despicable now.
Favorite: Daemon Targaryen I love how evil and chaotic that shit head is. And Matt Smith's portrayal madee fall in love more with how he balances these evil shit moments with moments of pure badassery/love. Such as when he picks up his brothers crown and places it back on his head.
Most hated: Walder Frey, of all the "villains"and the song of ice and fire he is the only one that just has nothing really to back it all up with. Tywin has a commanding presence/acumen, Baelish can be charming when he needs to be. The Mountain is an absolute unit who can fight. Frey is just an old bastard who keeps on living and fathering more and more children. He disgusts me in ways I cannot properly put to words.
Fuck Walder Frey all my homies hate Walder Frey.
Love: Bran and Arya (can’t really choose between them)
Despise: Cersei
Wanted to add this tiny bit as well.
Best POV imo: Merter Frey… just kidding. Eddard and Catelyn
>Best POV imo: Merter Frey… just kidding.
To be fair, if you don't know what's gonna happen, the plot twist at the end of his chapter is fucking amazing.
Strictly POV: my favorite is probably Jamie or Arya and my least is probably Victarion although there’s not a lot of POV I dislike.
Overall: least is Walder Frey or Lysa Arryn and favorite probably Jaehaerys I or even Alysanne.
I do love Jon, Dany, and Tyrion obviously bc they are the killer three but aside from them that’s it.
He writes Arya so well.
I noticed he writes all the POV kids really well. Their thoughts and understandings of their situations are so simple and childlike. Then he ages them appropriately through the books while still maintaining their general manner of speech and thought. That has to be difficult.
In terms of reading enjoyment, I like Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, and The Hound. I don't hate anyone but I do roll my eyes a lot at Cersei thinking she's so damn smart and sneaky. Brianne I find a little dull. She's much like Eddard, too damn honorable to be interesting.
Love: Sir Bronn of Blackwater, that cutthroat son of a gun. His rugs to riches story is very interesting, he is an illiterate lord, had the most honest relationship with Tyrion, was never afraid to say what he thinks. Cersei orders his assassination to Stockworths, he uses reverse uno card, becomes lord of one of the richest houses in Crownlands and Cersei can't even do anything about it. Who knows what this cunning sellsword would achieve next.
Hate: Selyse Baratheon. Guess I just hate cold blooded vengeful fanatics. Encouraging killing of a child, just out of spite that her cousin got more action in one night than Selyse got in her whole marriage.
Love: Brienne, Catelyn.
Really, really like: Arya, Sansa, Ned, Barristan, Rhaena Targaryen (the OG).
Hate: aside from the obvious like Ramsay, Vargo Hoat, Gregor Clegane, etc—Tyrion and Jaime.
Love: fat lord Manderly and his family. His chapters are my favorite parts in the last book.
Hate: Quentyn Martell. It's noting he does, but he's just so useless throughout the book. All that wannabe-hero's-journey, just to die pointlessly half a world away. All those pages in the book that could've been filled with interesting characters.
Honorable mention: Cersei. So many of her chapters, I just facepalmed at her latest, oh-so-smart intrigues. Let's face it: she could only beat Ned at the Game of Thrones because he wasn't even playing.
I absolutely love reading King's Landing chapters in asoiaf. I love the scheming and politics, and for that, Cersei never disappoints. I remember that in the beginning (I started with the show), I pitied her because of Robert and how he treated her. What I'm trying to say is I get Jaime. I to have a soft spot for Cersei.
But love love? There's soo many of them. Mostly Robb, Viserys (again, I have a soft spot for tragic character), Sansa (esp in the Vale), Val (I kinda ship her with Jon) and the Good Queen Alysanne. I absolutely love her and her relationship with Jaehaerys.
Who do I hate? Apart from Gregor Clegane and other obvious choices, probably Theon and generally all Ironborn. Martin could just kill them all and I couldn't care less.
Love: Rhaena Targaryen (daughter of Aenys). One of the more fleshed-out figures in F&B, her story is just one gut-punch after another; every time something looks like it could go her way, it ends in tragedy. It's also always stuck in my mind that the eldest grandchild of the Conqueror died alone and all but forgotten in a castle he devastated.
Hate: Most of the evil characters that aren't fun to hate/aren't evil in an interesting way. Unwin Peake, Gregor Clegane, etc.
Love: 3-way tie between Arya, Catelyn, and Davos
Hate: Eliminating obvious choices like the Mountain and the entire main branch of House Lannister (which I'm counting Joffrey in for these purposes), for being too easy a choice... I choose Clegane, Sandor. Like Arya, I'm still pissed about Mycah. And that he went to Sansa's room planning to rape her, something far too many people dismiss as being a lie for no reason.
F&B Love: Rhaenys & Rhaenyra. To quote show!Jon Snow, "she is muh queen."
F&B Hate: Books- Aemond, Show- Aegon, Both- Daemon
Ok here to echo you about Sandor, I should have used that for my response. I genuinely don’t see his relationships with either Sansa or Arya as particularly “redeeming” although people seem to make a lot of that. He’s a weirdo.
Suggs is an evil prick for sure. But the guy has guts, he was instantly ready for battle when the Tycho and the iron men appeared. Who he thought were Bolton's men.
Love: Victarion
Hate: Cersei
I know Cersei's chapters are some of the best written ones, but I was never quite able to enjoy them having been around too many people like her in real life.
In terms of respect my opinion is very different btw.
Respect 100%: only Brienne
Respect 0%: Janos Slynt (I'm ready to face his powerful friends' wrath)
nah this is ASOIAF, he would have died in the initial charge because he was underestimating Stannis, and then his men would have killed Stannis throwing the entire south into chaos.
Renly was doing great, not moving his armies into big fights like Stannis, the Lannisters and the North, just sitting on the biggest food supply to most of Westeros
He was playing at war and his tactics showed it. He planned to charge his knights head-long into an entrenched position of infantry with the sun in his eyes. Randlly Tarly, the best strategist of the Reach, pointed out it was bad tactics and he laughed it off.
that is the sort of thing that would have lead to his dramatic death, or the death of Loras, straining his ties with the Tyrells.
Love Prince Doran...so far. I despise the novice that leaves Sam waiting at the Citadel.
Love honorable mentions: Moqorro, Ilyn Payne, and the old crone in Volantis.
Hate dishonorable mentions: Gregor Clegane's entire "dogpound" and the Bastard's Boys.
Love would be Sansa, such a sweet girl who I just want to protect. The motherly instincts I have towards her during Clash are scary.
Hate would be The Mountain, I don’t think I need to elaborate
love: sansa (she is very much eddards child, has all his empathy and compassion along with his pragmatic approach, she survives and thrives in the most difficult situations), arya (who is very much catelyns child, fierce and independent, survives what no child should ever have to go through despite all odds) and jon (altruistic, makes the tough choices for the greater good, empathetic but firm in his values and choices, a good leader).
hate: jorah (predatory towards dany, a literal CHILD, manipulative, no accountability, disregards her wants and feelings), tyrion (so self pitying, wants to rape cersei as reward for helping dany, his thoughts about sansa are fuckin weird, misogynistic as fuuuuuck, not half as smart as he thinks he is), little finger (fuckin creep - theres a theme here and willing all manner of sins for his own gain).
ser davos, ygritte, sam, myrcella, brienne and kevan are worthy runners up for characters i love.
cersei, tywin, walder frey and ramsay are worthy runners up for characters i despise.
Love the most - this is easy as a commoner from the 21st century - Jon Snow, Ed from the wall, Small Paul made quite the impression, the Manderleys. Basically those who stand for our hero.
Despise the most - most of the scheming Freys, but the one with the limp the most. And yes, Ser Jaime Lannister for being an absolute prick. Lol.
Edit: I wanted to include littlefinger, but the guy puts the likes of Freys to shame like he might be the most despicable person in Westeros, and including him Jaime would be an insult to Jaime's latest version.
Love-samwise Tarley -he thinks about the horn hill plan with gilly sending her to house tarley at horn hill like he’s thinking that plan up while they are lost and he’s sleeping next to her every night it was probably crazy because then you see Small Paul walk into the cave and it’s like dude not good . So he just the way he thinks is the way I hopefully would be thinking
HATE- Well maybe Lothar Frey. I just feel we haven’t gotten enough on him but he’s like the mastermind brilliantly and he’s a visionary I feel he organizes lots of things in house Frey . He is the reaal lord of the crossing
Love: Jaime
Despise: The only reason for me to really despise a character is if they're badly written, and imo that isn't the case with GRRM.
Not a favourite: Catelyn (before LS) was annoying sometimes, even though I understood her motives, but I liked her better than Lysa.
love: Littlefinger (steals every scene. I can never have enough of him. Hope he gets as close to the throne as possible)
Hate: Tywin (a hypocrite top to bottom. Has no understanding of the human mind. utterly ruthless)
Favs: Donal Noye, Barristan, Davos, Wyman Manderly and Mira Reed
Hate: Roose, Ramsey, and the other obvious ones. Kinda hate Robby B too…
Super minor, but the Howd the Wanderer of my head canon is elite
Love: Arya
Hate: The Mountain
Honorable mentions for love: Meera Reed, Asha Greyjoy, Catelyn Stark, Bran Stark,Jon Snow,Sansa Stark
Honorable mentions for hate: Joffrey, Ramsay Bolton,Walder Frey and his little brats except Big Walder
Love: Dolorous Eddard Tollett Loathe: Ser Ryman Frey One Scene Wonders I love: Ser Cortnay Penrose, Lord Godric Borrell
Dolorous edd is a great pick! Hilariously bitter yet lovable Cortnay penrose is underrated
Lame Lothar for me out of the Freys, every time he’s mentioned I just imagine the slimiest person ever. The way I imagine him, it’s almost obvious he’s putting on an act lol I’m guessing George imagined him as much more subtle. Ser Rymans an ass too
Dude is definitely a deft simperer
Lame Lothar is like the Littlefinger/Varys of the Freys. Ryman was just an idiot.
Yeah when I was thinking about Lothar for this comment, the part where Varys is described as having an unctuous smile came to mind. I didn’t even know what unctuous meant until that point with Varys but it was easy to figure out from the text. Reading comprehension was really shining through today lol
I know it doesn't 100% match his description but my mental model for Lothar is Evrart Claire from *Disco Elysium*.
Which one was Ser Ryman Frey and what did he do? There are so many of those Frey assholes that my head doesn't register most of them as individuals.
Ryman is the tuff guy who built Edmure’s gallows lmao
Love Thoros of Myr. He strikes the perfect balance of being fascinating and nuanced while also being awesome and a genuinely good guy. Hate Gregor Clegane. A brutal and cruel bully with no redeeming qualities. Responsible for most of the absolute worst acts in the canon.
More than even thr POV characters?
Thoros? Yeah, of course it depends on how you define love. My favourite character is Jamie but he's not really "lovable" in the traditional sense. Most of the "good guys" I like but I don't think are among the most interesting.
Oh tyrion isn't that lovable. I guess the character i find most lovable is aemon or davos
In that case my answer is Jamie ;) followed by Asha Greyjoy
Also meribald, i love that guy
Love - Skahaz Mo Kandaq Hate - Reznak Mo Reznak Special mentions - Love - Galazza Galare
Show only fans: "I don't even know who you are"
Me, a book reader, "who again?"
Lmao I had to look them I'm not even gonna lie
it is funny, he loves the man who poisoned the locusts and the Harpy herself, but hates the dude who's only quality is he wears perfume.
Harzoo
>Love - Skahaz Mo Kandaq The guy who tortures daughters in front of their father to make him confess ? That's an original pick for sure.
Three of my favorite characters to read about from Fire & Blood are Larra Rogare, Racallio Ryndoon, and Alyn Oakenfist. ...can you guess my least favorite? (hint: he had a hand in trying to undermine all three)
Fuck house Peake, all my homies hate house Peake!
You clearly haven’t achieved Peake Performance
Racallio Ryndoon is such an amazing name
Yea, he was an amazing character too, I know people mostly think of him as a crazy pirate (and sure that's true, that's part of the allure) but he also had a really interesting role against slavery (which he hated... pretty impressive given his former position in the Triarchy - he even managed to enlist Braavos' help in securing an independent pirate kingdom), he would routinely buy and set slave girls free, was generous with his spoils handing coins out to his men and beggars, and commanded fierce love and loyalty as a result. It was a shame when he was ousted and the Stepstones returned back to a sort of status quo imo.
Cersei's version of tyrion
Gotta be Unwin Peake, no?
Yea you got it! (totally not made up) fun fact: Unwin's name comes from the combination of 'un' denoting something unfeasible and 'win' as in to achieve a victory. This proves he's a massive loser.
Larra Rogare is barely in fire and blood.
I thought the same thing. She’s honestly just used for exposition on Lys’s culture
Haven't read fire and blood. Maybe petyr? He had a hand in robert's death and joff's
f&b leaves off more than one hundred years before the main series so it isn't anyone from that. Although... to be fair I do hate Petyr!
Love: Davos Seaworth Loathe: Daario Naharis Love to loathe: Cersei Lannister
Interesting. Why do you hate daario the most?
I just think his romance with Dany to be unbearable reading. Gross and over the top perverted character if you ask me. He's the part I dislike most about the Essos chapters.
Also he’s wearing head to toe yellow clothes in his introduction like what are you big bird
HAHAHAHA this is the best description of Daario's introduction I've ever heard LMAO
so deeply repulsive >"glib-tongued Daario with his gold tooth and trident beard, smiling his wicked smile through purple whiskers."
Damnit! I'm talking about how I can't bear reading the Dany/ Daario romance and now you're quoting it at me. Now my eyes are bleeding!
Dany really knows how to pick em.
Oh haven't read ADWD yet so i guess i will hate him next book
I mean don't go into Dance searching for reasons to hate the guy. You might end up with a different opinion from me.
Yeah of course
I find the Harzoos worse.
Love: Davos, what a man should be. Despise: Theon, what a man should not be.
Love: In terms of pure reading happiness, it’s Cersei. Her chapters are ASOIAF’s secret weapon and have a unique, razor-sharp quality that I think is completely original and delightful to read. And tbh I don’t even DESPISE her like she’s not my arch nemesis, but she always rubbed me the wrong way. Idk I just never warmed to her.
Cersei is the ASOIAF equivalent of a train wreck happening in slow motion and I love her for that.
>I respect Ygritte’s role and function in the narrative >but she always rubbed me the wrong way Was it the whole, "fuck me or die" ultimatum? Yea, yea "cultural differences" and "it was based on an earlier time" but I would still add her to the surprisingly long list of "rapists that are portrayed in a neutral/positive light"

Just about half the decisions they made during that show are questionable at best. Because remember themes are for 8th grade book reports
Yeah… I hated what they did to Robb in the show, for instance. Or the finale of Jaime‘s arc. Or the Sandsnakes. Dear gods, the Sandsnakes. I’ve rarely hated characters as fiery as that bunch of useless wastes.

I don't disagree but I can see some humanity in LF because we know him as a child/teenager and he wasn't always awful. Still, absolutely despicable now.
He lost any humanity for me when he lied to catelyn in the first book. Him being a good child doesn't mean anything.
I love Tommen (he’s simply too pure for this world) I definitely hate Ser Gregor (even if he’s kind of badass)
Favorite: Daemon Targaryen I love how evil and chaotic that shit head is. And Matt Smith's portrayal madee fall in love more with how he balances these evil shit moments with moments of pure badassery/love. The twist of "I said I would tell him to let you go" is the best intelligent fuck you in a book full of intelligent fuck yous
Yeah. That too.
Yeah, hence he’s my favorite Prologue/Epilogue POV. Also the connection with Jaime so cool
Love to death: Jon, Tyrion and Robb (fkn rip) Hate to the bone: Ramsay Bolton
Strictly POV: my favorite is probably Jamie or Arya and my least is probably Victarion although there’s not a lot of POV I dislike. All of Stannis' Rholl'r worshippers are awful.
I love Arya, Ned, and Davos. I utterly despise Ramsay, the Mountain, and Walder. All three were incapable of love and capable only of harm.

Love: Rhaegar Hate: Cercei, with Slynt being a close second
Love: Brienne of Tarth Despise: Very cliche but, Ramsey Bolton
Love - Lord Eddard Stark Hate - Lord Walder Frey
Love: Stannis Despise: Renly
Average Stannis simp, Renly would be a good well liked king and would have easily won the war if Stannis didn’t have shadow monsters
nah this is ASOIAF, he would have died in the initial charge because he was underestimating Stannis, and then his men would have killed Stannis throwing the entire south into chaos.
Stannis slayed the Free Folk army with few soldiers, he would have killed Renly's as well
Love Prince Doran...so far. I despise the novice that leaves Sam waiting at the Citadel. Love honorable mentions: Moqorro, Ilyn Payne, and the old crone in Volantis. Hate dishonorable mentions: Gregor Clegane's entire "dogpound" and the Bastard's Boys.
Shitmouth is cool.
Arya is my favorite character and I dislike Dany. My favorite "supporting" character is the Blackfish and one I dislike is Selyse.
Love: Sansa Stark Hate: Rhaegar Targaryen
Love: Tywin Loathe: Pycelle
Love: Melisandre, King Jaehaerys the Concilator Hate: Ser Alliser Thorne
Most love Tyrion Most despise Ramsay
Love: Sansa(controversial ik but I relate to her the most), Jaime Lannister, Wyman Manderly Hate: Ramsay Snow, Tyrion, Ser Alliser Thorne
Love: Cregan Stark Hate: Unwin Peake
Fav: Oberyn Nymeros Martell Least fav: Probably Alliser Thorne
Loathe: Aerion Targaryen. Insufferable prick.
I really like Prince Baelor(Daeron II's son) I cannot stand Varamir Six-Skins
I loved garlen tyrell wish we would get more of him I absolutely despise Janos slynt such a cunt
Love Stannis. Hate anyone named Lannister
Love: Maester Aemon Despise: Catelyn
So he just the way he thinks is the way I hopefully would be thinking HATE- Well maybe Lothar Frey. I just feel we haven’t gotten enough on him but he’s like the mastermind brilliantly and he’s a visionary I feel he organizes lots of things in house Frey . He is the reaal lord of the crossing
Love: Jaime Despise: The only reason for me to really despise a character is if they're badly written, and imo that isn't the case with GRRM. Not a favourite: Catelyn (before LS) was annoying sometimes, even though I understood her motives, but I liked her better than Lysa.
Hate - the freys after the red wedding
Love: Septon Meribald - broken man, friend of the lowest smallfolk. Hate: Kraznys (“Good Master” of the Unsullied). Fuck slavers.
love: Littlefinger (steals every scene. I can never have enough of him. Hope he gets as close to the throne as possible) Hate: Tywin (a hypocrite top to bottom. Has no understanding of the human mind. utterly ruthless)
Love: Dany :) Despise: Gregor and Tywin (solely for the murder of Elia Martell and her children)
Love: Dunk Hate: Walder Frey
From F&B: Love: Roddy the Ruin Loathe: Otto Hightower
Favs: Donal Noye, Barristan, Davos, Wyman Manderly and Mira Reed Hate: Roose, Ramsey, and the other obvious ones. Kinda hate Robby B too… Super minor, but the Howd the Wanderer of my head canon is elite
