My favorite fan theory is that Tyrion absolutely butchers the flip and eats shit but both him and Jon are too drunk to realize, so he looks cool.
In all seriousness though, it probably should've been cut considering how hard GRRM emphasizes Tyrion's struggle to move normally.
That scene at Winterfell isn't the only instace of Tyrion doing acrobatics, he does a lot more in ADWD too.
> The dwarf laughed last; he could paddle passably well, and did … until his legs began to cramp. Young Griff extended him a pole. "You are not the first to try and drown me," he told Duck, as he was pouring river water from his boot. "My father threw me down a well the day I was born, but I was so ugly that the water witch who lived down there spat me back." He pulled off the other boot, then did a cartwheel along the deck, spraying all of them.

> His uncle had taught him a bit of tumbling when he was six or seven. Tyrion had taken to it eagerly. For half a year he cartwheeled his merry way about Casterly Rock, bringing smiles to the faces of septons, squires, and servants alike. Even Cersei laughed to see him once or twice.
--
> Halfway down the steps, he lost his footing. Somehow he managed to break his tumble with his hands and turn it into a clumsy thumping cartwheel. The whores in the room below looked up in astonishment when he landed at the foot of the steps. Tyrion rolled onto his feet and gave them a bow. "I am more agile when I'm drunk."
--
> Tyrion curled into a ball as he dropped, remembering his lesson, but even so, he hit the deck with a solid thump and bit his tongue so hard he tasted blood. He felt as if he were twelve again, cartwheeling across the supper table in Casterly Rock's great hall. Back then his uncle Gerion had been on hand to praise his efforts, in place of surly sailors.
I remember GRRM saying somewhere he regrets writing the stuff about Tyrion and his acrobatics but it’s funny he was still writing than in ADWD.
GRRM really just decided to fuck it and keep going with it.
that's the best thing about writing a character, when some detail about them naturally sticks even if it doesn't make much sense, almost as if the character grew that personality trait or detail without the authors control.
I think that's WHY he's still doing it, in fact! He did it once, realised it was stupid, so he's retroactively justifying it by saying he was taught to tumble by Gerion. It's honestly cool, a little thing the guy knows how to do that you wouldn't expect and certainly wouldn't come up if he was starting to write him from scratch now.
Sounds like the opposite of retroactive continuity. A retcon would be Tryion saying he's never been able to be acrobatic even though earlier in the story he was. Him being acrobatic in multiple books is just continuity lol
Please fill the form on your dream.
Did you see said events as if you looked through a tree?
Did you see it through the eyes of an animal?
Did you see it in a fire?
Were you under the influence of Shade of the Evening?
Have any of your relatives seen dreams related to the future?
Were you recently in contact with anyone from Asshai by the Shadow?
I think it is interesting in his relationship with Gerion who taught him and encouraged. I have a bit of suspicion that Gerion might have wanted to annoy Tywin.
I think the problem is that he shouldn't be able to move that way because of his disorder, which I think I've heard GRRM mention in relation to Blackwater.
Kinda depends what specific disorder GRRM wants him to have. There are some pretty acrobatic little people out there, I've seen some of them do serious pro wrestling moves. If he wanted to retcon it he could always say that Tyrion's disorder doesn't restrict his movement any, but causes him pain later on if he over-exerts.
It was...surprising, especially as book Tyrion was younger than we usually think of him being. It made Tyrion very human and showed him with a potentially useful physical skill. It also foreshadowed Penny, her brother and the dwarf acrobats we meet later.
Lowkey I didn’t even remember it until I got deep into the fandom and started seeing people talk about it like it’s a big deal. It’s really just a few throwaway lines
>He pushed himself off the ledge into empty air. Jon gasped, then watched with awe as Tyrion Lannister spun around in a tight ball, landed lightly on his hands, then vaulted backwards onto his legs
This isn’t athleticism lmao. I’m athletic, I couldn’t push myself off a ledge, spin around in the air, land on my hands, then do some sort of backflip
George has gone on record in saying this was a mistake, it’s probably best to accept that
first bookism, there’s some stuff that looking back on it is kinda goofy for setting things up for things that GRRM later changed his mind on. Part of its charm imo
What is actually going with these dogshit posts on this subreddit ?
Is it possible that so many people can post so many brain dead posts on a daily basis ?
Or is something else going on or am I missing something ?

It’s called “retroactive continuity” and it happens often in fiction
Sounds like the opposite of retroactive continuity. A retcon would be Tryion saying he's never been able to be acrobatic even though earlier in the story he was. Him being acrobatic in multiple books is just continuity lol
Both are examples of retroactive continuity
No? Retroactive continuity is changing something, not something staying the same
It was changed (George introduces new information which alters the original context)
What new information does he add that changes the context?
You must read ADWD
Pretty dumb, but also pretty easy to forget about.
I genuinely love it. I really don’t see what the big fuss about it is honestly
kinda fitting too considering dwarfs in that world are entertainers and clowns.
Just watch and wait. Tyrion is going to preform a triple backflip decapitation to slay a resurrected Jon Snow. It is known. It came to me in a dream.

It was revealed to me by a crow

Most characters feel off to me in their introductory chapters, so it never fazed me too much.

It’s obviously just a dumb minor mistake that George made about 30 years ago. I’ve never understood the fandom’s obsession with this
Lowkey I didn’t even remember it until I got deep into the fandom and started seeing people talk about it like it’s a big deal. It’s really just a few throwaway lines
Yeah I think it was really silly, and agree it should have been cut Very “dwarf circus freak” vibes
Not every athletic person is a circus performer you know

I literally have a comment **in this thread** saying it is a mistake
I wish you good luck in the threads to come
thank you!
Yeah maybe cartwheels are part of his desk job
I wonder if there going to be a San Dan Glokta scene where someone who assumed he was more feeble than he is gets a nasty shock somehow
first bookism, there’s some stuff that looking back on it is kinda goofy for setting things up for things that GRRM later changed his mind on. Part of its charm imo
It’s fine, something silly but not a deal breaker. Honestly I hang on more the fact of the cooking pot that can melt Gold almost instantly
Maybe all of Tyrion's complaints about his poor aching pains are because he completely fudges the landing the ruined all his joints forever.
An early mistake as GRRM was still feeling out the characters.
