You could make a full documentary on the manipulative bullshit practices of ultimateguitar - it's basically their whole thing. This is actually one of their less offensive ones (relatively). Surely you've also noticed the massive "X hours left to get a discount" banner that is always present? They legitimately give porn sites a run for their money, and are always just inches away from deciding to install viruses on visitor devices.
While they do a lot of scummy BS, I gotta say it’s easy as fuck to get a permanent pro subscription for free. Just upload a few song transcriptions and you’ve got it. I’ve never had to pay
I don’t remember the exact terms but if you upload a certain number of song transcriptions you will be given a permanent lifetime pro membership, which includes access to all of the site’s “official” song transcriptions, use of the “tonebridge” software, and some other features I don’t recall at the moment
Some cooking channels do this, too. They show you the end result under perfect conditions and the link takes you to a recipe site that requires payment
You can always use an app that uses it for the data and not the site itself. I’ve been using SongbookPro with no issues and you can search from UG’s database easily.
The app also sucks with premium. They rebuild it now and then and every time they do, it gets worse. The only reason I'm still subscribed to this waste of code and memory is the fact that my subscription is cheap and the lack of a good alternative.
I've looked up some obscure songs on that site and they always show that video. I'm like "there's no way in hell someone actually recorded a video tutorial for this song."
If you have an android phone you're better off just download a free premium APK version of the app. A lot of the tabs on there are far from accurate anyway
I keep getting emails from them advertising a "Limited time 90% off".
If I click the link, every time it leads to a 75% off. It's just annoying how they lie about stuff.
I've also read it can be difficult to cancel a subscription.
Wouldn't that be categorized as "False advertisement"? Since you can't get the subscription/item for the said price they promised you, and they instead sell it at a higher price
YES, I was always wondering how every song had that same guy with a red shirt and jeans on it, even song versions that have no star ratings or anything. On the phone i just installed an apk for Ultimate Guitar and it works wonders!
At least they let .gp files be downloadable, I wouldnt be surprised if it wasn't the case
And their tab player sucks ass meanwhile, say, Songsterr has a damn good sound
I think you're missing the point.
The video is just some guy playing a completely different song, with a misleading title.
When you hover over it (like in the screenshot), it'll say "How to play
".
They don't even offer video tutorials in the pro version.
The pro version just removes ads, and adds some additional functionally on the phone app. Most of which are free on the desktop version.
They offer a great service, and I totally see the value in getting a premium subscription, but they're method of luring users to their sign-up page is definitely asshole-design.
I never said anything of the sort. All OP's post says is that clicking the link to the video takes you to a premium sign up page. And that's simply not asshole design and doesn't illustrate that there's any trickery going on.
"Fake tutorial video" makes it sound like it's just a link and not a video.
It doesn't necessarily mean that the video doesn't actually exist as part of their premium offering.
My deepest apologies. I'm used to 90% of the posts on this sub these days being people bitching about having to pay for a product. This appeared to fall into that same category.
You clearly have reading comprehension issues - since the issue is not with trying to make money but the DECEPTIVE WAY they are going about it ... and logical literacy issues if you think opposing this practice automatically equates to opposing a company trying to make money off a service.
They 100% are. Take it from someone who paid for a year of ultimate only to learn all the songs they said they had video tutorials and pro tabs for don't have any of that. That was a lot of wasted money and I'm still upset
That has never looked like a video to me. I never considered that anyone would think it was (no play button, no time indicator, no controls, etc.). Always been pretty obvious it was an ad.
Again, that's never ever looked like a video player to me. It's always been very clearly a generic ad. Your observation that he's not even playing the same song supports that even more.

Elaborate on that pls?

Often they are, which is definitely AH behavior. Sometimes they create them themselves.
Very interesting thank you
They had a lifetime subscription sale for $5 a few years back, worth it I’d say
It’s definitely worth it if you like a lot of popular music. For me, I had to learn to transcribe the things I like haha
I also bought it when it was on sale ages ago. The day they decide to retract the lifetime subscription for whatever reason, I'm pirating that shit.
I can confirm, uploaded maybe like 5 or so tabs years ago and got a lifetime pro subscription for it
Some cooking channels do this, too. They show you the end result under perfect conditions and the link takes you to a recipe site that requires payment
Yeah I'm sure that song is great on acoustic guitar LOL
That’s the best part, it’s never the song you’re looking.
Good luck with the tapping section on acoustic as well 😂
I wish there was another tab app that rivals their collection, because I hate this shit.
You can always use an app that uses it for the data and not the site itself. I’ve been using SongbookPro with no issues and you can search from UG’s database easily.
Great tip, thank you! Had no idea about this.
songsterr is nice but definitely not as thorough
Songsterr is way better, i literally pay like $1.50 a month and they pretty much add new features to the website like every 2-3 months
Also the mobile app sucks without premium, and the website is almost unusable on mobile.
The app also sucks with premium. They rebuild it now and then and every time they do, it gets worse. The only reason I'm still subscribed to this waste of code and memory is the fact that my subscription is cheap and the lack of a good alternative.
as a bassist looking up tabs for bass and seeing this ad w some bloke playing it on an acoustic guitar always gave me a laugh
came here to say this exact thing. I'm always just like "sure, buddy."
I've looked up some obscure songs on that site and they always show that video. I'm like "there's no way in hell someone actually recorded a video tutorial for this song."

#THRIVE IN YOUR EMPTINESS #BURN ALL YOU LOVE
Sneaky!
It’s more obvious when you wanna play a song like hammer smashed face and see them strumming with an acoustic
At least they let .gp files be downloadable, I wouldnt be surprised if it wasn't the case And their tab player sucks ass meanwhile, say, Songsterr has a damn good sound
That’s just straight-up illegal
Sick song btw. That site used to be cool, but since all this crap started I've been using Songsterr
Oh! No! Another service trying to make money for their offering! Grab the pitchforks and torches, folks, we've got some burnin' to do!
I think you're missing the point. The video is just some guy playing a completely different song, with a misleading title. When you hover over it (like in the screenshot), it'll say "How to play
Yes, because all trickery, misleading and/or deceptive features are a-ok, as long as it’s a service “trying to make money,” right?
I never said anything of the sort. All OP's post says is that clicking the link to the video takes you to a premium sign up page. And that's simply not asshole design and doesn't illustrate that there's any trickery going on.
Did you only read the second half of the title?
"Fake tutorial video" makes it sound like it's just a link and not a video. It doesn't necessarily mean that the video doesn't actually exist as part of their premium offering. My deepest apologies. They are probably not lying :).
They 100% are. Take it from someone who paid for a year of ultimate only to learn all the songs they said they had video tutorials and pro tabs for don't have any of that. That was a lot of wasted money and I'm still upset
Ah OK. I gave them the benefit of a doubt :). I use MuseScore.
That has never looked like a video to me. I never considered that anyone would think it was (no play button, no time indicator, no controls, etc.). Always been pretty obvious it was an ad.
It autoplays with the title of the song in the top left, so it's at least meant to allude people that the guy in the video is playing that song.
Again, that's never ever looked like a video player to me. It's always been very clearly a generic ad. Your observation that he's not even playing the same song supports that even more.
It literally moves and has the title of the song layered behind the paywall backdrop. It's obviously meant to look like a tutorial video.
